Battle of the Donuts

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while since we shot a playful video like this. We actually have some other videos filmed, but they’re mostly at night, and when we looked at the footage it was just so…dark. And lately Tokyo has been absolutely gorgeous. It’s regularly hitting 20 degrees, it’s sunny and magical and pretty and hell, we wanted to play outside a bit. So we went to Daikanyama, which is starting to be our second favourite part of Japan. Kichijoji is #1 for sure IT’S THE BEST I LOVE IT, but Daikanyama has some really pretty looking streets and cool shops. Camden’s Blue Star Donuts is one of them.

Did you ever see that Jim Gaffigan skit on him going to a gourmet donut shop, and he picked a donut and told him the price and he says “oh, I just wanted one, not a dozen”? Well, this is one of those places. Each donuts is roughly $3-5, and though that’s steep for a donut these are HECKA GOOD donuts. I know you might also think that we can’t be trusted, because we didn’t eat the whole day and so these donuts taste a lot better than they actually would, but that’s not true either. We came there before and had their donuts on a regular, non-fasting day and still lost our minds over them. Each donut is really pricy, but each donut is blissfully delicious.

I would say that eating more than one donut at a time would be a bit too much. Each donut is pretty freaking big. Have one and you’ll be satisfied. If you’d like to check out Camden’s Blue Star Donuts in Daikanyama, you can check out their website, or you can just head over to 東京都渋谷区代官山町13-1. It’s in the big Freg Segal building, at the back. If you see the big pub there, the huge one, walk a little past it on that pretty looking street. You’ll see donuts to your left.

Also, we wound up cutting out the footage from the last donut, which was a special edition Sakura donut, but it wasn’t as great as the others, so that’s what you see me eating at the end of the video when we’re signing off. You can see that donut, and some more outtakes, in our bloopers, though! Check em out below:

  2. All of them look so delicious. Too bad I don’t live anywhere near these donut locations :(
I don’t really drink alcohol all that much; however, I will eat food that has alcohol in them because they taste so delicious…like the brandy peach syrup I got from British Columbia 2 years ago. It’s very tasty on my waffles or pancakes.
And a funny thing or it could be a gross thing, when the video showed Simon’s donut filling, the first thing I thought was “mustard” :)

  4. Wow, this video was really nostalgic. I almost felt like I was seeing KMM editing style again <3 Of course it always seems less mean somehow, if Simon loses (instead of Martina) but it was still sad. Hang in there Simon! I'm not sure why eating has to be such a game, but at least there were no bad eats to be forced down this time – LOL! Those donuts look delish but I still question their $3-$5 value. Maybe in a market that isn't so donut-centric as Ontario you can get away with it. I'm definitely going to try some kind of blueberry-basil combo next time I cook with blueberries (definitely FRESH basil, dried would be icky). And, as my Grandma who catered many a large party would say, "booze makes everything better, but especially desserts" ;)
