Eat Your Sushi: Ep 7

Welcome back! This week’s Eat Your Sushi episode is up! So much has happened since our last Eat Your Sushi episode.

For starters, WE GOT OUR FURNITURE! It took quite a long time to get here, but it finally arrived. We have a couch! We have a TV! We have our tripods and lights! And we have Kogi, Martina’s travel pig, who did not get VIP treatment in his move to Japan, which I thought was pretty hilarious. More hilarious than that is Kogi’s introduction to his new brother, Duck Duck McQuackerson (also known as Quack Quack McDuckerson), who filled the void while Kogi was sniffing shoes for a month. Martina needs a stuffed toy (or something stuffed, like bigger pillows) to sleep with to keep her shoulders in place throughout the night. With Kogi gone for an unforeseeable time, Martina had to get something to help her sleep. Now that Kogi’s back, though, we had to break the news to him: Martina’s been sleeping with another animal. Kogi didn’t take the news too well. Duck Duck McQuackerson on the other hand is quite slow, so he’s not sure what the fuss is about.

Ok I realized I shouldn’t write these blog posts this early in the morning, so soon after waking up, because then I start talking about things that I probably shouldn’t post, like stories from the imaginary personas of our lifeless stuffed animals. I can hear, crystal clear, in a few years, a potential manager saying to me “says here that your *flips clipboard page* Duck Duck McQuackerson is slow and doesn’t understand the commotion. Did you just write about your wife’s stuffed toys?”

Anyhow, we also showed you Martina’s nails up close. She finally got them done! She’s going to go a couple more times before she feels comfortable enough to recommend the place, like we did with her previous Nail Salon in Korea. Things are really different between both places, but we’ll talk about that another time.

Also, if you’re wondering what happened to last week’s episode, well, it was a bit confusing, but totally our faults. We filmed a special edition of Eat Your Sushi in the YouTube Studio space. We played games and told stories and it was great fun! However, when it comes to using footage from the studio space, we couldn’t use it with our regular vlog footage, the clips we use as interstitials, because we didn’t get location clearance for each place. One of the places was at NTT Docomo. We did a video about how long it takes to get a phone in NTT Docomo. And then we talked about it afterwards with the people that attended the YouTube event. Sounds confusing? It is. Long story short: if we had just used the footage from our event, we’d not have a problem. Because Eat Your Sushi is both an inside-outside footage kind of thing, it didn’t work. We still had an absolutely great time at the event, though, and met lots of lovely people, one of whom we spoke with outside of Harajuku a few days later (what are the odds!). I’m sorry we couldn’t get a video up for you last week, though. We should be smooth sailing from here on out!

So that’s it for this week’s episode. We’re back to another crazy week of filming, editing, and planning. We’re filming our first travel outside of Tokyo video next week, and we gotta get ready for that as well. Woohoo!

  1. Martina uses manic panic hair dye

  2. Martina uses Manic Panic’s ‘Cotton Candy Pink’ with some ‘Red Passion’ and ‘Hot Hot Pink’ added to it. Hey, back when Simon used to have red hair, did you guys share the hair dye and have hair dying days?

I’m just imagining Simon yelling RREEEEDD PAAASSSIIOONNN every time he dyes his hair.

  3. Hi guys!! I really would love to see a video of the new nails place!! I loved the last one in Korea and your nails today are so freaking AWESOMEEEE!! :D

  4. The hair dye is manic panic, which describes the hair dying experience rather well (for me anyways) The sailor moon nails are amazing!!!!! I almost died of the cuteness overload. Are there any plans to do any anime related videos like visiting the giant pokemon centre or finding anime themed food/cafe or interviewing people related to the industry?

  5. Manic Panic! You mix two or three different colors to get the shade you want.
Pink gerbera’s are my favorite flowers too!
I love the end shot of Martina walking backwards played in reverse!

  8. It’s Manic Panic! I don’t know how you pick the winners…is it whoever answers first? Or do you take all the right answers and pick a name out of fatfat taco-head? :C I’ve known all the skill-testing questions so far but haven’t answered any because I was sure I didn’t have any chance to win.

  9. I think her hair dye is Manic Panic. I also would like to ask the name of the Noodle place at the end of the video? I’m taking notes for my trip!

  10. I was mostly wondering what was wrong with Martina’s ear. I know ear infections are kinda running rampant here so is everyone getting sick in Japan too?

Hope she feels better soon <3

    • Martina’s actually deaf in her right ear, and I think the reason (pls someone correct me if I’m wrong) is because her EDS dislodged the tiny bones in her ear.

      • She would have a conductive hearing loss as a result of EDS interfering with the tympanic membrane and the articulation (holding together) of the ossicles (the tiny bones in the ear), but a conductive hearing loss alone is incapable of creating deafness.

We don’t know if the ear is entirely deaf (fun fact: Even deaf people have some hearing.),and have no audiometric testing results so it’s hard to say anything.

  11. Manic Panic!! Cotton Candy as the main base and either Hot Hot Pink or Red Passion to give it a stronger tint one way or the other. Knew this one instantaneously cuz me and Cotton Candy and Red Passion blended go waaaaaaaaaaay back (not really) go to ol’ 2006 when dark purple and bright pink stripey hair, paired with eyebrow piercings and studded belts made me WAY to cool for art school. Except not. …Delete those pictures……….. MySpace never forgets ……. ㅠㅠ.

  12. It’s Manic Panic. But you should try Special Effects! It’s my absolute, hands down favorite non-natural dye. It is amazingly bright and barely fades at all.

  13. The answer is…MANIC PANIC

  14. Now I’m not passing any judgement here, but I have it on good authority that Martina dyes her hair with Unicorn Blood.

  15. I’ve known the answer to everyone of your skill testing questions! I’m torn between being proud for remembering things and thinking its time to take a break from the internet…

  16. The answer to the question is Martina uses manic panic with cotton candy pink as a base and uses either hot hot pink or red passion colour to get a more vibrent pigmented result!! pink hearts for pink hair

  17. Martina, did you put stickers on the inside of the door leading out of the y’all’s house?!? If you did, ahahahaha that’s so great. #stickernation You’ve inspired me to use stickers. My whole life I’ve had a habit of hoarding stickers in a box and waiting for “that perfect, special moment” to use my stickers, but I just ended up never used them. I’m kind of changing my hoarding ways now (slowly).

  18. Other people got it before me, but I was also going to say Manic Panic. ^^;

But I see you received Berger cookies! They’re so good…

  19. Martina uses Manic Panic hair dye! She uses that pink Cotton Candy one and adds some of that Reddish one depending on what shade she wants.

Too bad that stuff wont work on… Whoops… almost gave away the secret project I’m planning to make for Martina. I can’t allow that. ;)

Anyhoo, those nails look kawaii. I wish I could get my nails like that, but my nails got really brittle last time.

  20. Martina uses the dye from Manic Panic!

  21. I’m pretty sure Martina mixes two colors together from Manic Panic

  22. MANIC PANIC …. I was using that stuff a decade ago lol
Love you both and thank you for all the smiles & laughter ; >

  23. Martina uses Manic panic – cotton candy pink
And adds a little bit of manic panic – red passion because the cotton can pink is too light and washes out too quick , and than make it into a strawberry pink color and she uses hot hot pink manic panic to turn it into a purplish red.if she wants it like that :D
    Love you guys ! ❤️❤️

  24. Martina uses Manic Panic dye. I’ve actually been wanting to do my hair similar to Martina’s! You should put up an open the happy video about the bleaching because I’m so scared to bleach!

  25. Martina uses Manic Panic hair dye! I remember because I’m planning on buying some myself :)

  26. Martina uses manic panic hair dye! I remember being surprised cause that brand never worked well for me

  27. Martina, I had samgyupsal for the very first time yesterday! Simon, I see your beard is regenerating.

  28. Martina you use manic panic, right? In your video, you used like 2 different shades of pink and red. Btw, when you guise talked about feeding the leftover sandwich crusts to birds, it reminded me of the Mary Poppins song, “Feed the Birds”(it’s beautiful everybody should look it up). I just finished working on spotlights for my school’s production and my heart was warmed with memories with cast and crew. Thank you.

  29. I remember Martina using Manic Panic because it inspired me to dye the underside of my hair blue with it, after which I promptly bought a matching blue “You so Nasty” hat and sent a picture. :)

  30. Martina used manic panic. And she is responsible for my collection of manic panic…so many colors.

  31. Simon’s house voice sounded like Fangurilla would, if she were a house.

  32. Hey Guys, how do you plan on celebrating Easter there? Do they celebrate Easter in Japan?

  33. Martina uses manic panic two different shades depending on how light or dark
she wants it. and I remember one of reasons she choose the brand was cause it was vegan. also she wishes she could go purple but it looks better with darker hair then what she has naturaly.

  34. Martina’s hair dye is “Manic Panic- Cotton Candy Pink” with a mix of “Manic Panic- Red Crimson”
P.s guys, is there any restrictions to food items sent to Japan?

  35. Simon and Martina, I love you guys!

Also, Martina, where did you get that fab red jacket!?

  36. What happened to the live YouTube studio episode?

  37. *Hot Hot Pink

Somehow I deleted the Hot Hot Pink. Oops. :)

  38. Martina uses Manic Panic Cotton Candy Pink as the base and adds either or Red Passion to it to achieve different variations of pink. Also, I love that video because Meemers climbs up Simon’s pants…so completely adorable. Those early Meemers videos just bring a smile to my face no matter what kind of day I’m having.

  39. You guys are super duper awesome, and I don’t have time to watch this right now but I have a TL;DR question: What is book culture like abroad? English speaking wise, there is a huge market for fantasy novels (Think HP and Tamora Pierce) and for action thrillers (James Patterson and Michael Crichton) and an emerging interest in comic books, but for the most part, this has died down and is really something that is subcultural and there isn’t a whole lot of people I see reading on the streets. So do people in Korea/Japan read books all the time? What genres/authors are popular? Is there one book that stands well above the rest (aka Harry Potter)? Do people like translated books or prefer those written in their native language? Are student’s forced to read novels in school? Are people influenced to read things by media (like the 50 Shades stories or comic books becoming movies and people then wanting the originals)? (WOW, this question is TL;DR in and of itself)
