Final Fantasy Cup Noodles

Hey does this count as a WTF or a FAPFAP? I’m not sure. It’s not really too focused on the food. It’s more focused on the novelty of the item and my having fun with it. And we’ve done WTF videos on food we found bizarre, like the Army Rations, for example. So I think this might be a Wonderful Treasure Find video, no? In that case, let’s all welcome the return of Wonderful Treasure Finds! When the next episode will air, I’m not sure, because we didn’t really plan on this being a WTF, but it is it seems.

Doing a video on Final Fantasy Cup Noodles is pretty late as well, as these came out a few months ago. We just got them today because Martina was on Amazon looking for a new blender since our old blender broke, and then she stumbled into the sale section because as soon as you get her on Amazon she’ll wander there for a couple of hours looking for things that we might need for the house but don’t necessarily need pressingly, and she found the noodle set ON SALE. The whole thing was roughly 20 bucks or so, and so HELL YEAH we bought it. It’s Final Fantasy! I love Final Fantasy! And I don’t get a chance to nerd out over stuff as much as Martina does here in Japan, with the Sailor Moon cafe and all the cute stuff she loves, this was my chance to be thrilled. I wanted to say “enthrilled,” but I thought people might think I meant to say enthralled, and that’s not the case. I have been made thrilled: enthrilled. It’s a new word and I like it.

As for the Noodles themselves, a couple of things impressed me: one, they look just like the Cup Noodles in Final Fantasy XV. It’s quite impressive how they look the same. I felt a lot happier eating them because I loved Final Fantasy XV so much. Second thing: the Cup Noodles actually tasted a lot better than expected. I remember having Cup Noodles as a kid and not really loving them, but they’ve scienced some new flavours into them now and they’re really quite impressive. I have no idea what those beef cubes are but they’re tasty. The shrimp still tastes like shrimp I remember from other instant ramen, and the yellow puff thing is just confusing and doesn’t add a lot to the table, but the noodles themselves are actually quite yummy, too. That is, when you cook them right. They’re not too great when they’re undercooked. When they’re cooked, they have just the right sensation for maximum slurpability, and it makes me wonder if Nissen has different noodle prototypes that they test out in the lab and make people rate according to slurpability. Because the noodles are light it’s easier to pull them up. If your noodles are too heavy it’s a lot more work. But if they’re too thin in an attempt to be light then they can lose flavour and become mushy very quickly. But not these. They got just the right combination for slurpability.

From a Final Fantasy fan perspective, this was really enjoyable to open. Seeing all the bosses at once brought back a lot of memories. Except for Final Fantasy 12 which I played and loved the mechanics of but for the life of me I couldn’t remember the storyline at all. It was weird at the time, and this was before I cared terribly about narrative, and so I’m sure now it’ll be even worse. But for the rest of the Final Fantasy games, I really enjoyed this. Except for Final Fantasy 13 which is the worst ever ever EVER I HATED IT SO MUCH.

Ok, I don’t want this to devolve back into a Final Fantasy talk for me. If you’re a fan of the franchise, let me know which one was your favourite and why, and I’ll pick one and mail out one of these Cup Noodles to you, because I want to share the joy that I felt with this. We’ve actually washed out the cups and kept them. They look really cool. I hope they don’t deteriorate anytime soon. I hope you like them as well if we send you one!

Otherwise, we’ve got some extra scenes if you’re in the mood for more nerdy talk and uncomfortable amounts of excitement. Yay!

  1. Final Fantasy is my life. I even have a growing collection which I will soon share on instagram. I’ve played all of the main titles except for XI because I was too young to pay for the sub at the time (still plan to play it though). I’m a bit bias since it was my first but FF IX is my favorite. I love the characters, the story, the music. I had so much fun with the mini games and flying the airship around. Garnet will always be my favorite FF character. She has always been my idea of how a princess would be. I feel there is more to her than people realize and sometimes over look her, along with other characters in the game. After IX in no particular order, I also love FF IV, V, X, and XIV. I wish more people would play FF V, I feel it is the comic relief of the series (although it still has it’s dark moments).

  2. Can you buy this in Korea?

  3. My husband and I are going to cosplay Locke and Celes from Final Fantasy VI! That is his favorite and I can’t wait to cosplay it. We’re going to base it off of Amano’s style for the characters!

  4. Out of all the Final Fantasy’s, my favorites (that’s right, plural!) were 7 & 8. FFVII for the fantastic story and VIII for the fantastic graphics. Although, to be honest, the story in 8 was cool, but I liked 7’s better. Plus, chocobo races… Hello?! Who doesn’t love a good chocobo race?
    So there’s my tale.
Now, may I please have a Cup Noodles? *bats eyes innocently*

  5. Hey Simon!
I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan too! Admittedly, I haven’t played too many of the Final Fantasy games. Right now, I’ve played FFVII Crisis Core, FFXIII, FFXIV, and FFXV (I don’t know if FF Record Keeper or Brave Exvius count). I hope to play more though!! I actually got into Final Fantasy by playing Kingdom Hearts. It’s sort of the entry franchise for people unfamiliar with the Final Fantasy series. My favorite Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy XIV! I know that some people are not a fan of the MMO genre, but I absolutely love it. The fact that you get to create a protagonist in a Final Fantasy universe is really cool! You get to create the backstory and life of your character before they get to Eorzea. FFXIV is full of references and cameos from other Final Fantasy games! There are so many cool little easter eggs, and nods to characters and bits of lore. I play as a Miqo’te White Mage. Being a healer is both fun and frustrating XD Anyways, I’m glad you’re a huge fan of Final Fantasy! Chocobros for life!

P.S. Have you been to the Eorzea Cafe in Akihabara? I want to go one day!

  6. My favourite will always be FFX, because it was the first one I ever played. I feel like a lot of people are that way though with the Final Fantasy series since a majority of the games are so good the only way to pick a favourite is for it to be for nostalgia purposes! But seriously, FFX was actually the first more serious video game I played, since being the youngest and a girl, my family always gave me Barbie games and whatnot. I was never allowed to play any more cool, fantasy stuff until my older brother let me play FFX. It was such a life changing experience, after that I practically begged my brother to play all the other final fantasy games, and ended up getting into more big kid games because of it. And now I’m a video game addict, but we don’t talk about that lol.

  7. If anything, you can cut the cup and just have the middle part where the paper of final fantasy chara is. You can put that in some type of album, but you can wipe down the inside part where the noodles were. Just for extra cleansing or maybe put some clear tape or something. That way it would not make the cup rot. Idk if that makes any sense. It would be something I would do if I had something like that.
I would love to learn more about final fantasy, but the battles scare me and I don’t like to fight/hurt people. Even if they are not real people. Maybe final fantasy creators should make a version just for girls lol. Something not so fightie. Just a suggestion~ lol

  8. 11 was my favorite. I guess I liked the difficulty to get to 75 that took a year in the beginning. I would probably never eat these and keep them on display for my lifetime lol

  10. I can’t eat cup noodles so I pass on a chance to win them (though they do look pretty cool) but I just can’t pass up a chance to talk about final fantasy. Final Fantasy IX is my super favorite. I love the colors the characters and the story line. For me, from beginning to end it was just super fun. It was the one that I replayed the most and I still have my old ps1 console just so I can play it when I get a hankerin. Final Fantasy VIII is my second favorite. That was the very first one that I played and I got so drawn into the story that I used to dream about it. The biggest drawback on that one that made me super crazy and almost hate it was the ‘draw’ system where you had to draw all of your spells for all of your characters and you needed to have it cause that determined your HP and other stats. That got sooooooo boring. My brother found me fallen over asleep with the controller in my hands a couple of times when I had to do a bunch of draws. He told me that a game that put me to sleep probably wasn’t worth playing. But, the story kept me interested enough that I played it several times. Final Fantasy X I loved that you could customize your weapon. The story I think was good. The graphics were good (especially when it first came out) but I super loved making a bunch of cool weapons for my characters….I should probably stop talking now. Happy Gaming!!!

  11. For any of my fellow American Nasties don’t even think of trying to look at ebay for this set. They run from $83 – $155.00.

  12. FF8 was my favorite. I know it got a lot of hate but I don’t care. I love it because it was the first one I got to play. When I was young I never had a console but my brother did because his biological father would always try to “buy” his love. He hated 8 and gave it to me to play on his console while he was at work. Which only averaged about an hour day because I was at school during most of his shifts. It was the one that got me into Final Fantasy and led me to get my own console once I was old enough to get a job.

  13. I’m so bummed that I can’t get the FF Cup Noodles in the US. There are people selling them on eBay for between $110 and $160, but they are nowhere to be found on Amazon here. I would love to win a cup. My favorite FF was 3. Yes FF3, back in the 90s. I played it on Super NES when I was 18, my High School boyfriend and I broke up (after 2.5yrs) while I was playing it- it was his Super NES. He let me borrow it anyway even though we broke up and I played it all day every day for a week in tears most of the time. I had to give it back when I beat the game, but the game is definitely burned into my memory. I think my second favorite was VII, because that’s the only other one I played all the way through.

  14. Since I’m not a fan of FF (nothing against it, I just don’t have a lot of time for video games), I was a little bored but that slap from Martina at the end made it totally worth it. Thank you Martina ;) The kawaii logo (homemade) still made me think that this video was sponsored though for some reason. WTF indeed.

    • Oh, btw, I really like the new photo on your twitter feed. See you for the livechat :^)

  15. You did your best, Simon! I’m sure after some leveling you’ll be able to beat them all next time :D

I think my favorite Final Fantasy is X! I thought the concept of the world was cool (if a bit confusing) and I really liked Yuna as a character. Her struggle with her mission was compelling and really interesting. FFX is a favorite of my husband’s as well, and so we actually incorporated the FFX theme into our wedding! I got to walk down the aisle while “To Zanarkand” played, and it was magical. I must admit I’m not terribly knowledgeable about most of the other Final Fantasy games, but someday when I have more free time I hope to be!

What Final Fantasy game would you (or anyone else in this lovely community!) recommend after having played FFX?

  16. You’re missing out if you’ve never played FFXI. Great characters, beautiful world and cool lore. I’m sure a lot of my love had to do with the community in the game but it also has a lot going for it.
Oh, and that was Shadow Lord on the FFXI cup.

  17. Those look really cool! :D My favourite Final Fantasy is definitely IX! It was the first FF I knew and I watched my brother play it before I did it myself. It’s a really nostalgic game for me but that’s not the only reason I like it. Vivi is also my favourite FF character and he is not only cute but also a very deep and complex character! Oh and the music of IX is so great! I actually had Loss of Me as my ringtone for my Nokia 3310 as a kid. :D Just talking about this is making me want to replay the game… I should set up the old PS again and play it the old school way with multiple cds. haha

  18. I totally agree with Simon: Ardyn was the best nemesis in the Final Fantasy franchise. I am a bit sad though that the story was so short :/. If I have to pick my favourite Final Fantasy is XIV because I met my best friend and partner there. I started playing with the launch and we still play it every day. I love it that the cup noodles feature Bahamuth on the packaging. Most fun fight in the entire game!

  19. I love love Final Fantasy but I have to say that my favorite is Final Fantasy 3! It is the very first FF I ever played. I remember watching my brothers play FF3 on snes and begging to play and getting rejected constantly( T_T JUST SOOO MUCH REJECTION!!!) It wasn’t till after my brothers were thoroughly over the game that I finally got the chance to play and I have been hooked since then.
