Getting a Side Shave for Girls

I finally did it! After contemplating and browsing through pictures for months and months I finally decided to get a side shave. Now I know it’s a pretty dramatic look and for some people it can seem daunting and worrisome to work with this hair style, but I’m hoping this video will shed some light on those concerns. I didn’t just want to do a “look! it’s a time lapse of my haircut” video, but also a practical “how to work with the hair” after the whole haircut is done.

As I mentioned in this video, I did a lot of research about side shaves and read all the pros and cons because choosing on a particular look. From the big points I saw most people are concerned with the growing out aspect of the side shave, but as you will see in this video, if you shave off the correct amount of hair from the right location, growing out won’t be an issue!

When it comes to getting funky hair cuts or even getting your hair dyed in Korea, it can be a very scary experience, especially if you can’t express exactly what you want. I always recommend bringing a collection of YES and also NO pictures with you, rather than just “YES this is what I want.” If you have a bunch of clear “NO don’t freakin do this” then the whole circle of hairdressing life is complete. If you just assume they get it that’s you mistake. Hahaha! I seriously bring so many pictures with me…it’s like a diagram…hahahha!

Since moving from Bucheon I stopped going to Juno Hair (I miss you Cheri the awesomest hair stylist ever) and started going to Hair and Joy where I go to Johnny. He lived in England, speaks English, and knows how to deal with different types of hair. He’s great and I’m pretty sure he owns the salon. if it’s your first time going I recommend going to him first. So that’s where I go to get my hair bleached white before I dye it pink at home. That was something Juno was actually unable to do for me so I found Hair and Joy while living in Bucheon. It was just a pain to travel out to Seoul but now that I live closer, it’s easier to get a hair cut and a dye.

Also, note: did you notice the poster behind me? The girl with blond hair and pink under lights? Uh huh. That was there WAY after I started going to Hair and Joy with pink hair. I asked Johnny if they’re doing pink hair dye now and he said that particular dye washes out and fades super fast so told me to stick to what I’m using now (which is Manic Panic). Okay, note over.

So that’s it for my little blurb on hair! I’m going to attach a pic of Johnny’s card/Hair and Joy’s info incase you want to visit. And keep in the mind this is a November 2014 blog post, so goggle Hair and Joy Hongdae Seoul just incase the location changes over time. I’m happy to share my hair adventures with you all and hopefully it gives you guise a little burst of courage to change up your hair. After all, it’s usually grows back and if all else fails, wear a fantastic elastic hat. So has anyone gotten a hairstyle that they really loved or really really regretted? Let me know in the comment section below!

  1. Ahhhh! I did it! I had been wanting to do it for a long time, and your video helped me find the courage. The thoroughness of it, showing all the different styles was the thing that did it for me. Thank you!

  4. So I just went to the salon Martina went to in this video (Hair & Joy). I just wanted to say they’re awesome!!! If you want a haircut in Seoul then I also recommend there! My stylist was Jason, just in case you’re wondering.

  5. I just started watching EYK after a watching a video on MKH!!! I saw the side shave and was like, “WHOAH, SIDE SHAVE!” I have a side shave too! Seriously the most liberating thing I have ever done in my life! Also the happiest thing I have ever done with my hair! Also took video of the entire process. :) I love it because you can see the tat on my neck a little better ( I have super long brown to violet/hot pink ombre hair)! Try french braiding from the front to the back along the part where the shave meets the longer hair! :D ROCK ON WITH THE SIDE SHAVE!

  6. I was watching this video yesterday and there was a pop-up ad for the company I was waiting to hear from about a job. Today I found out I got the job! Thanks for the mojo Martina! :)

  9. Lookin’ gooood Martina! Be reeeally careful when you trim. It’s to easy to slip a little and take off some more hair, leaving yourself with a jagged, un-neat hair line. Speaking from experience! hahaha. I must say shaving off your own hair has a certain satisfaction to it

  10. I did the exact same shave about… two years ago now. Totally researched and debated for three months before going ahead with it. Because I was in China, I definitely had to bring pictures and a Chinese friend because no one had side shaves there and I was nervous but I wanted it so bad and I knew exactly how to grow it out. The side doesn’t look too bad in the first month or so growing out, you can show it off (maybe even dye it a cool color to show distinction). After that, I completely flipped my part so it was totally covered (I have curly hair, which doesn’t cover as well when its a thin, straight layer like yours). It was annoying sometimes because I had to do side ponytails/braids, but it was totally worth it and it only took a year to completely grow out. A pic of it slightly grown out: https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash2/v/t1.0-9/228150_4576311046204_213057386_n.jpg?oh=dd17446087cf04e1f18d2f516e135d9e&oe=551FB4C1

  12. You look gorgeous Martina *-*
I like that kind of haircut, but I’m loving my hair too much to cut it (2 centimeters and I’m crying). So what I do is an african braid style on one side of my head. The kind of braid which stays stick to your head, and stops behind my hear. (That kind if you what ;) -> http://globedia.com/imagenes/noticias/2012/8/27/trenzas-pegadas-raiz_1_1351893.jpg)

  13. You’re hair looks so awesome! I LOVE it!! I wish I could get it done and look so good! I would be way too scared, though, and I don’t think it would work well at all with my face shape. But I’ve always wanted to do something edgier with my hair.

  14. You look amazing!!!

  15. You look so beautiful!!! *o* I love it!
I don’t mind getting funky hairstyles because what the hell, but my friends and family end up asking so many questions about it that I don’t do it as much as I would. I’ve been thinking about getting red tips, maybe.

  16. I’ve been waiting for my pixie to grow out long enough for a side shave. I should be getting my cut in a week or two.

  17. OMG martina so PWEDYYYYYY <3 I have been thinking about getting various coloured hair and hair cuts done including the side shave thingy but yea… I am too much of a coward to try it out T^T Might get inspired from this and try it out soon thoughhhhh… If I woman-up enough xD

  18. Martina, your new haircut is fabulous. You’re so brave to do such a bold style~
I’m coming to Seoul in December and I have bleached blonde hair. I can predict the stares already. I am also coming to the You Are Here cafe bearing Christmas gifts (*cough* Australian wine *cough*) so hopefully I get to meet you guys.

  19. True story: So I actually bleached and dyed the underlights of my hair pink because I really liked your hairstyle. And then over the summer I cut my bangs after not having them since I was 5, because I really like your bangs. But I actually don’t really like the look of the side shave. Maybe since you have it my opinion will change though~

  20. i’ve seen this alot lately and everyone’s acting like it’s a new things for chicks to do. back in the mid 90’s to early 00’s it was very normal in certain circles. all the chicks i hung out with had at least some part of their head shaved. my sisters both kept the backs of their neck shaved and i kept my long hair shaved underneath all the way around.

  21. So I’ve been rocking the sidecut for a little over a year now, but recently decided to start growing it out because I’m 25 and want to look like an adult.

Nope. BRB, going to reshave it. You look great Martina!

I live in Bucheon now and have been to Juno Hair! That place is really nice and although I have only been their once, I need to go again soon, they did a great job. I am still scared to do a drastic change but reading this has helped a lot!

  24. I’ve wanted a side cut for years but haven’t had the guts to do it! I have long, poofy curly hair, but I’m all the time pulling my hair back and parting it to the side to see what it would look like. I really like how it, but I’m looking for graphic design jobs at the moment, and so I’m afraid in the interviewing process having a side-cut wouldn’t work out (since I would need to pull my hair back). :c

One of these days though, one of these days… Martina gave me the extra courage.

  25. I am hopefully doing this while i’m still young ^^. I don’t think once I get a full time job that it will be allowed but that’s a really good idea to be able to still do the middle part and cover it up. I’m super nervous. I wanna do it!

  26. OMG it’s looks GREAT!! you totally rock it Martina! :D

  27. The shortest I’ve gone with a hairstyle was right below the ear in a bob cause im scared of getting it any shorter in case i look really bad with it. Plus all the cheap/medium priced hair dressers are really bad here (in Madrid… as far as i know), so i try avoiding them as much as i can, THEY NEVER CUT IT THE WAY I WANT THEM TO! It’s so frustrating which is why i haven really mixed my up hair much..

But my question is, in Seoul, are the cheap/medium priced hair salons good at cutting hair? like will they screw it up or do it wrong? What is the quality?

  28. Your hair looks amazeballs! I think you should cosplay as Cressida from the Hunger Games!! You and Natalie Dormer are practically twins now!

  31. I have wanted to get a side shave too because it looks so thrilling but I have really curly hair and have been wearing it the same since I was 15 (I’m 21) and I’m just worried about how it would look!

  32. Wow, Martina, you’re so pretty! A side shave is probably something I would never do but I like how you described it in such detail. ^^

  33. Vy

    I love it!

I thought it was awesome how the rest of your hair can cover it up when you want it to be and that it doesn’t limit your hair styles at all. It just adds a little funk to it. :D

  34. omg this reminds me how last year I actually did a short undercut and bleached my hair and all and yes it’s a pain to grow, but really there’re some tricks to help your hair grow out faster (Which I didn’t do….) and now I am in the process of growing out my hair so I can do your exact idea, Martina! Since I’m in Korea, I’m happy I can refer to what you’ve done and look out for good hair salons!

  35. I just did a side shave recently myself, and I absolutely love it. It has given be such a confidence booster and so many people have complimented me on it, I think my ego is getting bigger, haha.

  36. I have been contemplating that hairstyle for a few years. When I became a tattoo artist, I really wanted to get it done — my long hair always wanted to be on the side that I lean on for tattooing. However, I still worked in an office at the time and couldn’t even dye my hair anything other than “natural” colors (some people definitely had some unnatural red…). Anyway, now that I’m a teacher in Korea, I highly doubt that my job would allow that. Off to find an editing job! *flies away*

I had long curly hair for most of my life. About 2 years ago I cut it into a sort of diagonal bob that I LOVED. I felt so sexy and got a lot of compliments. I then decided I wanted to be more dramatic and I got a pixie cut. I liked it. For a bit I looked like Halle Berry actually but then it started growing out and it was SUCH a pain! I finally have it at an acceptable length. A but past my shoulders. I go through phases where I just want to do something dramatic with my hair and I’ve thought of that shave. I just don’t think I can pull it off. I’m also super lazy sometimes so I don’t trust myself to keep it up.

You look AMAZING though Martina. I love the mix of punk and feminine your hairs got going on. I’m so excited for you and I can’t wait to see what you do with it in upcoming videos!! :)

  38. So so so cute!!

I have curly-ish hair, and honestly I don’t think I’d want to do it. I have it very very short in the back (I have an extreme A-line bob), and when the short hairs start growing out they get all cray cray. I can’t imagine it on the side. I love the idea of shaving all around and having a sick ass mo-hawk, but I’ll stick with my bob, haha.

I think it’s a great style for girls though!

  39. I really like the look Martina! I always said if I was edgier I would get a side shave. I would like to do it but I want to wait after I get my shorter layers to a desirable length so it won’t look so bulky. Right now they’re resting just at my chin and the right side has always been curlier than the left side. So thanks for the inspiration and good luck with the new style!

I never saw anybody was able to make the hair style work as much you do !! You look sooooo perfect and fabulous! The style really fit with your bleach! I love it!

  44. A-dorable! For hair dye, have you ever tried Special Effects? That (and Pravana) are my go-to dyes for ma’ crazy colors. Special Effects in particular lasts incredibly long (my roots end up showing before my color fades)!

I need something new haircut-wise, but I don’t think I could do the side shave. My hair is really fine and wouldn’t cover the ‘growing out’ side. :(

  45. Oh, you so sexaaaaaaaay, Martina!!!!! WAY TO GO ON FOLLOWING THROUGH WITH THE SIDE SHAVE!!!!! You look gorgeous!!!!!

  46. Awwww yeaaaaaahhh. Veeerrryy sexxyy :D

Martina if you keep doing these awesome hairstyles one day I might turn up to work with half-shaved rainbow hair ! …hahaha plus my mom would probably cry. But that’s ok.

As for a place to get funky patterns in your side shave….ask Jay Park? Hahaha he’s the first Korean I think of when it comes to that. Or Kim Jong Un XD XD XD
If it’s just renewing your buzz cut, can’t you do it at the JUNO near the studio? Whatsisname….Lee Ssang at the Hongdae JUNO could speak English and obviously does a fantastic job *flicks hair*, plus there were quite a few foreigners when I went. It probably doesn’t matter anyway since your Korean is waaaay better than mine, and it’s not like they’re doing a dye job? Just bring a photo of Sandara Park’s side shave, draw a pattern on it, HUZZAH!!

  47. You look fabulousss! The side shave with pink hair is the perfect balance of fierce and kawaii, like wolverine meets Hello Kitty. Hats off to you for going for it!

My thoughts when I first saw your haircut:

  48. OMG! Martina, I think you’ve given me the courage to do this now. I’ve gone between long and short hair for years and was initially attracted to this style, since it’s a little of both, but kept getting nervous about taking the plunge! I also think you’re right to not have it with the undercut, its much more manageable and versatile. I guess the only other thing I would need to do in prep for this cut is practice shaving LOL! Don’t want to get it done every two weeks xP

  49. I want to this sometimes but with an undercut because I really have thick hair. Also, Martina, did you know there are some alternative to Manic Panic that last longer? Here’s a link that list some alternatives if you’re interested: http://fashionista.com/2014/10/rainbow-hair-dye

  50. that haircut is popular in Florida. <3

Usually I don’t like this hairstyle, but I think yours looks pretty good! Some people I’ve seen cut really short (almost shaved clean) and that one doesn’t look good at all. I think it’s good that if you want to you can cover it up if some day you change your mind.
Personally I wouldn’t do it for several reasons.I have thin hair so if I cut a portion of it, I would lose a lot of volume and I don’t have a lot to begin with. Then, my hair is wavy, so when it started growing it would be a pain.
I recently cut my hair and although I like it long, I had to cut shoulder lenght to eliminate the layers I had before, which give volume but are awful for hairstyles. And even if it looks fine, that’s as short as my hair goes!

  52. I would so love to do something very radical and change up my hair, but I’m absolutely terrified of the results. Plus I’m uber low maintenance so I’d never give the upkeep that that hair needs, I feel for the hairstylists every time my mother makes them straighten/style my hair because it’s too much work. So reason why I stick to my natural, probably kinda damaged, long wavy hair. Martina, you look great and it really fits you.

  53. Oh my gosh you look so pretty!!! Even my brother agrees ^^

  55. I really loved it!! you look sooo pretty!! a couple of years ago I did something similar, I wanted to get the bottom half of my head shaved because I liked the style and also so I wouldn’t sweat so much in summer XD but I went to different hair salons over here and no one would really shave it completely like yours, they always cut it really short with scissors and I would say, no I want it shaved! but they still wouldn’t do it, It was frustrating, in the end I was only able to get really short hair and decided to get some blue dye in it X’D I will use your advise and next time I will bring some pictures~ ^^

  56. MLE

Ah that looks amazing!! It would be so cool to get that done but I don’t know if it’s in my character to do that and pull it off ^^; Also I don’t know if that would affect work opportunities with companies? Maybe if I covered it up all the time at work and for interviews… I also don’t know if I would trust myself to re-shave it properly D:

Also how do your bangs stay so nice?? Is it just your hair type? I have somewhat greasy hair so I can only get short bangs to stay nice for the first half of the day, after I’ve washed my hair. After that it clumps together and is floppy :(

  57. I love your hair it looks great!

  58. The cut look awesome on you Martina!! Personally, I would not do it b/c I don’t think it would look good on me, plus I think its an extreme cut for me :P My best friend has this cut though and when she first did it a few years ago, she also loved it and still rocks it today!

My favorite hair-cut I got was when my bottom hair of my hair long and top half short. So I had a 2-layer hair-cut, which I loved b/c it gave two different styles to my hair. Some people thought my hair was just short and I would wear extensions and I would say “Nope, its all realllll!!” Haha. I think the reason I liked it so much was because the part I cut short I also got layers on it. Idk if my description is even making sense, but I was able to be very versatile with my hair styles :D

  60. YOU SO PRETTY MARTINA !
No, seriously, that suits you so much !

I really like that kind of hairsyle, but I wouldn’t have it for myself becquse I have very curly puffy hair. And I think that if I shave all my hair on one side, I will have one side super flat and the other side SUPER MEGA PUFFY with all the hairs and the curls. So yes, it would be too much asymmetric I think.

But maybe a little little one, from the front and stopping at the start of my ear would be nice…. (Still thinking about it uh…)

  65. I can’t even… I can’t handle this. Martina, you look absolutely AMAZING! Stunning! You pull this look off perfectly! You’re so right about it having a tomboy-rocker feel. You look so stylish and just badass. You’ve always looked great, but I am in love with this look! Gosh, I wish I could be as gorgeous and stylish as you. *(^o^)* So many feels~ (Side note: can you make posters? Official EYK posters? I would so buy, I love you guys that much. You always make my day a good one~)

  66. The firt time I decided to half-shave my hair, my sister did it for me..I was so nervous and exited at the same time. Leter, i decided to radically cut my hair, also because I really dislike them,I didn’t have time to make them look normal..and for this reasor i always wear a sloppy ponytail (oh boy..). Now i’m free! my hair are now short and with a double shave of both side of my head! That air cut is soooo confortable, and my air are always perfect for avery situation and very easy to style (i can curl it too! ) I advise it for every girl who wants to look cute and strong at the same time..and, yeah, also to who -as me- are lazy. lol

Martina looks super cool! I always imagined her with that hairstyle!
    Kisses from Italy! Ciao!

  67. It looks gorgeous!!

I reaaaally want to get one, but I probably won’t be doing it in the near future since I’m hoping to get a job soon and I think I’d have less opportunities to get one if I had a side shave. I could cover it like Martina did, but in that case I would have less options for hairstyles. Also, I have wavy, thick and sort of frizzy hair so I’d be also worried about that.

  68. you look totally amazing wow! :D

I’m working up the gorgeous to dye parts of my hair a fun color XD

  69. I had an undercut same size, same part about a year ago! It’s growing out (slowly) now, but it’s easy to hide.

  70. That is amazing Martina. I remember in high school … Nope Middle school when getting the underside of your head shaved was really popular. i wanted to do it, but never did. I’ve been growing my hair out for 8 years now. It’s the longest it’s ever been in my entire life… Hair is just hair but cutting it is so scary lol.
I’ve done some super crazy things with my hair /with color/…. never with a cut. My hair has been every single color of the rainbow both intentionally and unintentionally.

As for Salons in Seoul… I’ve been going to Mix Hair in Nowon… Not a lot of English, but they do an all right job.
Someone else mentioned Lucy’s in Sinchon. They’re good, but…. I’m very picky with my hair… I had the same stylist for 3 years before I moved to Korea (and she was my cousin too and good friend) so she just….. understood what i liked and wanted.
I haven’t been able to find that here in Korea. :\ Lucy does a great job and speaks very good English, but… the results haven’t been quiet what I want.
As for Mix hair… it’s kind of the same. They do a great job, but… The stylist I went to seems to be the type to be like, “No. I know what’s best.” Instead of what I truly wanted.
Price wise: Lucy’s cost me 125,00 won for 3 color partial highlight and haircut. And 137,000 won for 2 color partial highlight, scalp treatment and hair cut.
Mix hair cost me 15,000 won for cut and style, 80,000 won for 1 color partial highlight and cut (highway robbery!). I went to another salon in Nowon once and got a shampoo and style for 21,000 won (worth it when your hair is long, thick and curly to have someone else wash it and straighten it).

One last comment: I have found, since my friend does the wax dyes they have here in Korea, that manic panic–punky colour–color jamz–special effects–raw color. They all work waaayyy better than the dyes here. At least for intense crazy colors like that. (Of the brands listed above I have tried them all with great success. Of them only color jamz really uses a lot of chemicals so it’s not as safe on your hair as the colors. Manic panic and punky colour both are vegan products and therefore not damaging to your hair at all. They act like a conditioner instead. I would leave the color in over night while wearing a shower cap to achieve intense colors that lasted for months. I also would only wash my hair ever 4-5 days. I can go up to 10 days without washing my hair now, but settle for once a week. ^^ )

  71. Holy smackers that looks awesome, Martina, seriously! I’ve thought about doing something like that before but my hair is so short now, I’m not sure I want to try the tomboy rocker girl look :P I already have a version of it anyway, albeit not so extreme. For about a year now I’ve had my hair asymmetrical – on one side it comes just down to my chin and on the other and down the back of my neck it’s cut as close to my head as you can without actually shaving it (or it’s supposed to be – I’m too lazy and broke to get it cut as often as I should and my hair grows crazy fast). I absolutely LOVE my haircut, and my hairdresser (shoutout to Hector!!!). Actually you were the one who inspired me to try it out, back in the tl;dr about being fashionable in Korea, to just try a style that you might not think you can pull off. Awesome advice!

  72. I’m usually -very- brave when it comes to haircuts. I once had my entire head buzzed so i had 3mm of hair left on my head. It was after trying a sideshave, which did not look good on me. I’ve also had some serious undercut/mohawk action going on. Like a fauxhawk, but with the sides buzzed. I’ve had purple hair, bright red hair, and now I have pink hair.
I’ve had a pixie cut before as well.
First time i cut my hair short was in the 10th grade.
Now i’ve been growing out my hair after i buzzed for a year and a half, after spending 3 years trying to grow it out, and then cutting it off. My hair has grown from 3 mm to nearly shoulder length. I might be less brave in the future!
I might include some pictures if people are curious as to what it looked like!:)

  73. You look absolutely fab Martina! And I really love how Simon is so supportive and encouraging – the two of you are a beautiful couple~
I’ve been thinking about getting a side-shave for ages but I’ve always had long hair so I’ve been too afraid to risk it. As a result, I settle for braiding a section of my hair tightly to my scalp to mimic the aesthetic!

  74. When I lived in Seoul I loved Lucy’s salon in Sinchon. They always did an AMAZING job cutting my hair. It was pretty cheap too. About $25USD.

  75. Yay Martina!I totes used to have a side shave, but my hair is curly and was shorter at the time so it was more edgy rockery like you mentioned in the video. You Look gorgeous! Pulling it off!

  78. I actually thought about getting a side shave about a year ago, after having grown out my hair like you, but then for some reason decided not to. I think my main concern was whether it would look good on me or not, and not really the two things you mentioned in this video. This was very helpful video though, especially concerning what size and type of a side shave to get if you want to hide it. Right now I’m on a mission to grow out my natural hair color back again after like six years of dying it brown, red, copper and brown again etc etc. So maybe when that is done, I might get a side cut similar to yours, if I still really want one. I’ve actually seen a lot of girls with side cuts in Finland, especially last year. I wonder why. I really wanted a side cut after seeing Dara rocking it in I Love You.

    • Oh and forgot to say that:

The side shave looks so good on you Martina!

  79. Martina, that side shave is really well done and you totally rock it.

I’m not fan of the side shave look but yours is truly beautiful. And it’s fun that you thought about it long enough and ended up with your ear limit with all those hairstyle you can still do with it.

    Well thought process is successful.

  81. I had my side saved. (as you might see from the picture). I loved it, but my hair was to short to cover the side when I wanted to grow it back…. so I got my hair cut short. Now I regret cutting my hair short ’cause it was a pain in the a** to grow it long again. My hair is now a little bit below the shoulders and it took me two years! But I must admit that my hair was in really bad condition as I bleached the live out of it! Nowadays I miss my sidecut :D

But it really (!) looks awesome on you! It was smart, that you thought this all throw (I didn’t). I’m super hyped about this look!

  82. Martina you are so cute! :D

  83. Martina I did the same shaved side haircut three/four months ago and you shouldn’t worry about it growing out. I haven’t done anything to the shaved part since I went to the hairdresser the first time and now my long hair is covering it while it grows back. And I totally agree on being careful on how much and exactly where you choose to shave.

The shaved side hairstyle look really good on you. You kinda got the fluffy rocker chic look^^ and I love it.

  84. Not faaaaair! It looks so good on you! If I tried anything like that (which I really want to!) It’d look so bad :( It really is a feminine look while still being edgy and I love it <3

  85. Umm… Is Martina sitting in a room labeled as the “Get Naked Room”?

    (Super love the haircut btw!)

  87. You look so beautifull, Martina <3! Absolutely lovely! I'm really thinking about a size shave too, but I don't dare, because my hair is so long already..

  88. That hair looks AMAZING Martina!!
I knew you could rock this style and be feminine at the same time, but I was scared you would be limited on your cute hair styles more now, but I loved how you explained about the different styles you can still do and also about the growing hair part. This video is super informative!! It shows how much research you have been doing :)

  89. I’ve never wanted a side shave or even thought it looked that good. But after watching your video, it makes me want to go out and get it done! Great job on all the research. You answered all my questions I would have for someone with a side shave but I couldn’t have the nerve to ask. Your hair looks super cute and I look forward to seeing how you’ll style it.

  90. Martina it looks great! :D I’ve wanted to do a side shave for some time too (actually the same size as you, not to go far from the ear) but my hair is really thin… So covering the shaved side when I want to grow it back would bring problems. ;^; But maybe someday I will, when I decide that I can cut my hair short after that. haha
Also if you want some changes, instead of the shaving the designs, you can dye some! Like dye a heart or a star on the shaved area! :D Not sure if I explain well so here’s a pic of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu https://33.media.tumblr.com/e5244a75bf89a85c83356e9ec62a35e2/tumblr_mschlck6WN1qagxv6o1_500.jpg

  92. You look awesome Martina! I don’t want a side shave but everytime I see your hair (which is a lot because I watch almost every video you make) I want parts of my hair coloured in a bright colour… :( I’m just so scared it would ruin my hair. My hair isn’t as smooth as yours…

  93. OMG Martina you look so pretty~! *.* I have always wanted to do that to my hair, but I don’t have that much hair in my head to do it ;; my hair is waaaay to thin for this -.-

  94. Wow! It looks really good!
2 years ago, I got my head shaved in a wide mohawk! I’ve been growing out the middle and keeping the sides shaved. I was really nervous when I got it done the first time. My hairdresser didn’t ponytail the sides and cut them off, she sectioned off the mohawk and went to buzzing! She got one side done and I almost panicked, but then she got the other side done and I loved it! I’m currently growing it out for my wedding but I’m getting the sides shaved again right after!

  95. I have to admit that clients like Martina while making a huge change make me more nervous to actually cut their hair. the oh wait I’m not ready makes me so nervous to cut their hair. once had a lady come to where I was working, her hair was almost down to her butt. she hands me a picture of Riana with her asymmetrical pixie cut and said I want my hair like this. I was more nervous the then her! any way I finished the cut showed her how to style it and was cashiering her and she lays the bomb on me. She said OMG my husband is going to kill me. all I could think of to say was um if he loves it you got it cut here if he doesn’t You didn’t come here got it? All that mattered is that she absolutely loved it.

    • Thanks for sharing that story! It hadn’t crossed my mind that the hairdresser could get nervous as well. ^.^

  96. That looks amazing!!

The only extreme haircut I ever got was when I started cutting my own hair end of 7th/beginning of 8th grade and eventually gave myself the whole so-called ‘scene/emo’ haircut with no part, really thick bangs and a ton of layers. I loved it personally but I started growing it out after not even having it for a year.

I kinda couldn’t do anything with it and I had to cut it like every 6 weeks or so which I found kinda annoying. I’m in 10th grade now and my hair looks pretty normal. I still have bangs, and my layers are a little awkward and still growing out but it doesn’t look bad.

I had such a hard time deciding if I wanted to grow it out or not xD
Now that I did start growing it out I can do a lot more things with it, though I recently just cut like 20cm off so it’s only around 10-15cm below my shoulders. I did this mostly so that my layers could grow out better and not look so awkward but I really miss my long hair lol.

Now I really have to start my French homework…

    • Also, I tend to not trust hair dressers at all. Even now when I got the length of my hair cut off the hair dresser cut one side a tad bit shorter than the other. That’s kinda why I stick to cutting my own hair. Especially when it comes to my bangs xD

Maybe I just haven’t found the right salon yet, who knows^^

  97. You look really great Martina!
I actually got that hairstyle in 2010 – and it was perhaps a year before it started becoming popular in Norway. I got SO many stares! I really liked it though, and if it hadn’t been for the hairdresser focusing too much on the long side as well I wouldn’t have been frustrated by it. She cut it shorter on one side and then kept the length in the back, because I would flick it in front of my shoulder where it was not shaved. She had never done it before, and I wish I had planned it a lot more, like you did. But other then that I was thinking just like you Martina, and I didn’t really have any issues hiding it when I started growing it back. Just last year it FINALLY became that long, nice length I have wanted for so long. But damn, it did really look good on you Martina… Argh, no! My shaven time is over! *Still uncertain* Curses.

I’ve wanted to get that done, buuuut REALLY hesitant to do so… After watching what you did it kinda makes me want to do it too, but I think I would have to go in the salon with some sort of drunken buzz. Overall it’s really awesome!

  99. Part of my comment got cut off when I posted it?! Weird. Anyway, it looks awesome on you Martina! Good choice!

  100. Martina your hair is so pretty! I want to play with it (and here is where I start hoping you don’t think I weird. I know playing with hair isn’t that weird but we’ve never meet and that makes it weird). I would definitely get that hair cut but after I get a job.

  101. This looks great on you Martina!

I do see this a lot lately. Even versions where people will shave off half of their hair to get a tattoo on their head and to then.. cover it up with hair? I actually don’t know if a tattoo on your scalp will limit hairgrowth.. Someone educate me?

I do see that in Japan (like Harajuku 2011) girls get a sideshave and then colour it with in a pattern with maybe a heart, and then the rest of the shaved part in a different fancy colour. Kyary did this too!
So if you don’t manage to shape it maybe you could experiment with dye?

  102. Wow Martina you’re rocking it!!! I’m thinking about dyeing my hair but hummmm, ermmm… idk… purple maybe? anyways, you look gorgeous as always, keep it up!

  103. I would love to have this hairstyle but I’m too scared that it won’t turn out alright or that I’ll regret it! And also the worry that it will be a pain to grow out again is ever present. I had a friend who did that some years ago and it looked so cool and I’ve wanted to do it for a while now! Too scared… And since I’m looking for a job now I should probably wait until after the interviews are done

  104. Emi

That looks awesome! I’d do it myself if I had thicker/fuller hair, but mine is so thin that I’d have no hair left even if I did my research as good as you did :D You’re super cute with that side shave!

  105. Wow! That’s a great haircut Martina! I am sooooo jealous! I had thought of cutting mine in a purple/grey fauxhawk but, well, your look is cooler. My hair long now too and I’m not sure with winter coming, that I want to take away my protection, perhaps for the spring. 3 years ago I did your original assymetrical cut (I even brought in a screencap of you) but then coloured it dark purple (originally hot pink) in the bangs and underneath. The hairdresser thought I was crazy (and I had to get another hairdresser to fix it) but it looked awesome and even grew out nice because I have wavy/curly hair. I would post a photo, if this format let me.

I really liked the timelapse, the angle was great.

Cyber_3 – overwhelmed by the sheer amount of videos last week, no time to watch all, nevermind comment

  107. I had an undercut for a year. Started with one side then did the other so I basically had a long mohawk I kept in a ponytail. HAHA the worst part was when I decided I wanted to grow it out (started seeing too many undercut/side shaves around town). I had to cut so much hair off! XD
