Getting a Side Shave for Girls

I finally did it! After contemplating and browsing through pictures for months and months I finally decided to get a side shave. Now I know it’s a pretty dramatic look and for some people it can seem daunting and worrisome to work with this hair style, but I’m hoping this video will shed some light on those concerns. I didn’t just want to do a “look! it’s a time lapse of my haircut” video, but also a practical “how to work with the hair” after the whole haircut is done.

As I mentioned in this video, I did a lot of research about side shaves and read all the pros and cons because choosing on a particular look. From the big points I saw most people are concerned with the growing out aspect of the side shave, but as you will see in this video, if you shave off the correct amount of hair from the right location, growing out won’t be an issue!

When it comes to getting funky hair cuts or even getting your hair dyed in Korea, it can be a very scary experience, especially if you can’t express exactly what you want. I always recommend bringing a collection of YES and also NO pictures with you, rather than just “YES this is what I want.” If you have a bunch of clear “NO don’t freakin do this” then the whole circle of hairdressing life is complete. If you just assume they get it that’s you mistake. Hahaha! I seriously bring so many pictures with me…it’s like a diagram…hahahha!

Since moving from Bucheon I stopped going to Juno Hair (I miss you Cheri the awesomest hair stylist ever) and started going to Hair and Joy where I go to Johnny. He lived in England, speaks English, and knows how to deal with different types of hair. He’s great and I’m pretty sure he owns the salon. if it’s your first time going I recommend going to him first. So that’s where I go to get my hair bleached white before I dye it pink at home. That was something Juno was actually unable to do for me so I found Hair and Joy while living in Bucheon. It was just a pain to travel out to Seoul but now that I live closer, it’s easier to get a hair cut and a dye.

Also, note: did you notice the poster behind me? The girl with blond hair and pink under lights? Uh huh. That was there WAY after I started going to Hair and Joy with pink hair. I asked Johnny if they’re doing pink hair dye now and he said that particular dye washes out and fades super fast so told me to stick to what I’m using now (which is Manic Panic). Okay, note over.

So that’s it for my little blurb on hair! I’m going to attach a pic of Johnny’s card/Hair and Joy’s info incase you want to visit. And keep in the mind this is a November 2014 blog post, so goggle Hair and Joy Hongdae Seoul just incase the location changes over time. I’m happy to share my hair adventures with you all and hopefully it gives you guise a little burst of courage to change up your hair. After all, it’s usually grows back and if all else fails, wear a fantastic elastic hat. So has anyone gotten a hairstyle that they really loved or really really regretted? Let me know in the comment section below!

  1. you look totally amazing wow! :D

I’m working up the gorgeous to dye parts of my hair a fun color XD

  2. I had an undercut same size, same part about a year ago! It’s growing out (slowly) now, but it’s easy to hide.

  3. That is amazing Martina. I remember in high school … Nope Middle school when getting the underside of your head shaved was really popular. i wanted to do it, but never did. I’ve been growing my hair out for 8 years now. It’s the longest it’s ever been in my entire life… Hair is just hair but cutting it is so scary lol.
I’ve done some super crazy things with my hair /with color/…. never with a cut. My hair has been every single color of the rainbow both intentionally and unintentionally.

As for Salons in Seoul… I’ve been going to Mix Hair in Nowon… Not a lot of English, but they do an all right job.
Someone else mentioned Lucy’s in Sinchon. They’re good, but…. I’m very picky with my hair… I had the same stylist for 3 years before I moved to Korea (and she was my cousin too and good friend) so she just….. understood what i liked and wanted.
I haven’t been able to find that here in Korea. :\ Lucy does a great job and speaks very good English, but… the results haven’t been quiet what I want.
As for Mix hair… it’s kind of the same. They do a great job, but… The stylist I went to seems to be the type to be like, “No. I know what’s best.” Instead of what I truly wanted.
Price wise: Lucy’s cost me 125,00 won for 3 color partial highlight and haircut. And 137,000 won for 2 color partial highlight, scalp treatment and hair cut.
Mix hair cost me 15,000 won for cut and style, 80,000 won for 1 color partial highlight and cut (highway robbery!). I went to another salon in Nowon once and got a shampoo and style for 21,000 won (worth it when your hair is long, thick and curly to have someone else wash it and straighten it).

One last comment: I have found, since my friend does the wax dyes they have here in Korea, that manic panic–punky colour–color jamz–special effects–raw color. They all work waaayyy better than the dyes here. At least for intense crazy colors like that. (Of the brands listed above I have tried them all with great success. Of them only color jamz really uses a lot of chemicals so it’s not as safe on your hair as the colors. Manic panic and punky colour both are vegan products and therefore not damaging to your hair at all. They act like a conditioner instead. I would leave the color in over night while wearing a shower cap to achieve intense colors that lasted for months. I also would only wash my hair ever 4-5 days. I can go up to 10 days without washing my hair now, but settle for once a week. ^^ )

  4. Holy smackers that looks awesome, Martina, seriously! I’ve thought about doing something like that before but my hair is so short now, I’m not sure I want to try the tomboy rocker girl look :P I already have a version of it anyway, albeit not so extreme. For about a year now I’ve had my hair asymmetrical – on one side it comes just down to my chin and on the other and down the back of my neck it’s cut as close to my head as you can without actually shaving it (or it’s supposed to be – I’m too lazy and broke to get it cut as often as I should and my hair grows crazy fast). I absolutely LOVE my haircut, and my hairdresser (shoutout to Hector!!!). Actually you were the one who inspired me to try it out, back in the tl;dr about being fashionable in Korea, to just try a style that you might not think you can pull off. Awesome advice!

  5. I’m usually -very- brave when it comes to haircuts. I once had my entire head buzzed so i had 3mm of hair left on my head. It was after trying a sideshave, which did not look good on me. I’ve also had some serious undercut/mohawk action going on. Like a fauxhawk, but with the sides buzzed. I’ve had purple hair, bright red hair, and now I have pink hair.
I’ve had a pixie cut before as well.
First time i cut my hair short was in the 10th grade.
Now i’ve been growing out my hair after i buzzed for a year and a half, after spending 3 years trying to grow it out, and then cutting it off. My hair has grown from 3 mm to nearly shoulder length. I might be less brave in the future!
I might include some pictures if people are curious as to what it looked like!:)

  6. You look absolutely fab Martina! And I really love how Simon is so supportive and encouraging – the two of you are a beautiful couple~
I’ve been thinking about getting a side-shave for ages but I’ve always had long hair so I’ve been too afraid to risk it. As a result, I settle for braiding a section of my hair tightly to my scalp to mimic the aesthetic!

  7. When I lived in Seoul I loved Lucy’s salon in Sinchon. They always did an AMAZING job cutting my hair. It was pretty cheap too. About $25USD.

  8. Yay Martina!I totes used to have a side shave, but my hair is curly and was shorter at the time so it was more edgy rockery like you mentioned in the video. You Look gorgeous! Pulling it off!

  9. The Model in the Background of Martinas-hair-getting-cut clip, is styling the martina-pink dyed hair xD Martina= New Korea Sensation ;P kkk

    Looks great though ^_^

  10. Martina you look amazing!!! You should do more videos like this by yourself!!!!

  11. I actually thought about getting a side shave about a year ago, after having grown out my hair like you, but then for some reason decided not to. I think my main concern was whether it would look good on me or not, and not really the two things you mentioned in this video. This was very helpful video though, especially concerning what size and type of a side shave to get if you want to hide it. Right now I’m on a mission to grow out my natural hair color back again after like six years of dying it brown, red, copper and brown again etc etc. So maybe when that is done, I might get a side cut similar to yours, if I still really want one. I’ve actually seen a lot of girls with side cuts in Finland, especially last year. I wonder why. I really wanted a side cut after seeing Dara rocking it in I Love You.

    • Oh and forgot to say that:

The side shave looks so good on you Martina!

  12. Martina, that side shave is really well done and you totally rock it.

I’m not fan of the side shave look but yours is truly beautiful. And it’s fun that you thought about it long enough and ended up with your ear limit with all those hairstyle you can still do with it.

    Well thought process is successful.

  13. woooo, looks so cool

  14. I had my side saved. (as you might see from the picture). I loved it, but my hair was to short to cover the side when I wanted to grow it back…. so I got my hair cut short. Now I regret cutting my hair short ’cause it was a pain in the a** to grow it long again. My hair is now a little bit below the shoulders and it took me two years! But I must admit that my hair was in really bad condition as I bleached the live out of it! Nowadays I miss my sidecut :D

But it really (!) looks awesome on you! It was smart, that you thought this all throw (I didn’t). I’m super hyped about this look!

  15. Martina you are so cute! :D

  16. Martina I did the same shaved side haircut three/four months ago and you shouldn’t worry about it growing out. I haven’t done anything to the shaved part since I went to the hairdresser the first time and now my long hair is covering it while it grows back. And I totally agree on being careful on how much and exactly where you choose to shave.

The shaved side hairstyle look really good on you. You kinda got the fluffy rocker chic look^^ and I love it.

  17. Not faaaaair! It looks so good on you! If I tried anything like that (which I really want to!) It’d look so bad :( It really is a feminine look while still being edgy and I love it <3

  18. Umm… Is Martina sitting in a room labeled as the “Get Naked Room”?

    (Super love the haircut btw!)

  19. Looking great! It is really edgy, but in a feminine way. Thumbs up from Denmark! :3

  20. You look so beautifull, Martina <3! Absolutely lovely! I'm really thinking about a size shave too, but I don't dare, because my hair is so long already..

  21. That hair looks AMAZING Martina!!
I knew you could rock this style and be feminine at the same time, but I was scared you would be limited on your cute hair styles more now, but I loved how you explained about the different styles you can still do and also about the growing hair part. This video is super informative!! It shows how much research you have been doing :)

  22. I’ve never wanted a side shave or even thought it looked that good. But after watching your video, it makes me want to go out and get it done! Great job on all the research. You answered all my questions I would have for someone with a side shave but I couldn’t have the nerve to ask. Your hair looks super cute and I look forward to seeing how you’ll style it.

  23. Martina it looks great! :D I’ve wanted to do a side shave for some time too (actually the same size as you, not to go far from the ear) but my hair is really thin… So covering the shaved side when I want to grow it back would bring problems. ;^; But maybe someday I will, when I decide that I can cut my hair short after that. haha
Also if you want some changes, instead of the shaving the designs, you can dye some! Like dye a heart or a star on the shaved area! :D Not sure if I explain well so here’s a pic of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu https://33.media.tumblr.com/e5244a75bf89a85c83356e9ec62a35e2/tumblr_mschlck6WN1qagxv6o1_500.jpg

  25. You look awesome Martina! I don’t want a side shave but everytime I see your hair (which is a lot because I watch almost every video you make) I want parts of my hair coloured in a bright colour… :( I’m just so scared it would ruin my hair. My hair isn’t as smooth as yours…

  26. OMG Martina you look so pretty~! *.* I have always wanted to do that to my hair, but I don’t have that much hair in my head to do it ;; my hair is waaaay to thin for this -.-

  27. Wow! It looks really good!
2 years ago, I got my head shaved in a wide mohawk! I’ve been growing out the middle and keeping the sides shaved. I was really nervous when I got it done the first time. My hairdresser didn’t ponytail the sides and cut them off, she sectioned off the mohawk and went to buzzing! She got one side done and I almost panicked, but then she got the other side done and I loved it! I’m currently growing it out for my wedding but I’m getting the sides shaved again right after!

  28. I have to admit that clients like Martina while making a huge change make me more nervous to actually cut their hair. the oh wait I’m not ready makes me so nervous to cut their hair. once had a lady come to where I was working, her hair was almost down to her butt. she hands me a picture of Riana with her asymmetrical pixie cut and said I want my hair like this. I was more nervous the then her! any way I finished the cut showed her how to style it and was cashiering her and she lays the bomb on me. She said OMG my husband is going to kill me. all I could think of to say was um if he loves it you got it cut here if he doesn’t You didn’t come here got it? All that mattered is that she absolutely loved it.

    • Thanks for sharing that story! It hadn’t crossed my mind that the hairdresser could get nervous as well. ^.^

  29. That looks amazing!!

The only extreme haircut I ever got was when I started cutting my own hair end of 7th/beginning of 8th grade and eventually gave myself the whole so-called ‘scene/emo’ haircut with no part, really thick bangs and a ton of layers. I loved it personally but I started growing it out after not even having it for a year.

I kinda couldn’t do anything with it and I had to cut it like every 6 weeks or so which I found kinda annoying. I’m in 10th grade now and my hair looks pretty normal. I still have bangs, and my layers are a little awkward and still growing out but it doesn’t look bad.

I had such a hard time deciding if I wanted to grow it out or not xD
Now that I did start growing it out I can do a lot more things with it, though I recently just cut like 20cm off so it’s only around 10-15cm below my shoulders. I did this mostly so that my layers could grow out better and not look so awkward but I really miss my long hair lol.

Now I really have to start my French homework…

    • Also, I tend to not trust hair dressers at all. Even now when I got the length of my hair cut off the hair dresser cut one side a tad bit shorter than the other. That’s kinda why I stick to cutting my own hair. Especially when it comes to my bangs xD

Maybe I just haven’t found the right salon yet, who knows^^

  30. You look really great Martina!
I actually got that hairstyle in 2010 – and it was perhaps a year before it started becoming popular in Norway. I got SO many stares! I really liked it though, and if it hadn’t been for the hairdresser focusing too much on the long side as well I wouldn’t have been frustrated by it. She cut it shorter on one side and then kept the length in the back, because I would flick it in front of my shoulder where it was not shaved. She had never done it before, and I wish I had planned it a lot more, like you did. But other then that I was thinking just like you Martina, and I didn’t really have any issues hiding it when I started growing it back. Just last year it FINALLY became that long, nice length I have wanted for so long. But damn, it did really look good on you Martina… Argh, no! My shaven time is over! *Still uncertain* Curses.

  31. Di

I’ve wanted to get that done, buuuut REALLY hesitant to do so… After watching what you did it kinda makes me want to do it too, but I think I would have to go in the salon with some sort of drunken buzz. Overall it’s really awesome!

  32. Part of my comment got cut off when I posted it?! Weird. Anyway, it looks awesome on you Martina! Good choice!

  33. Martina your hair is so pretty! I want to play with it (and here is where I start hoping you don’t think I weird. I know playing with hair isn’t that weird but we’ve never meet and that makes it weird). I would definitely get that hair cut but after I get a job.

  34. This looks great on you Martina!

I do see this a lot lately. Even versions where people will shave off half of their hair to get a tattoo on their head and to then.. cover it up with hair? I actually don’t know if a tattoo on your scalp will limit hairgrowth.. Someone educate me?

I do see that in Japan (like Harajuku 2011) girls get a sideshave and then colour it with in a pattern with maybe a heart, and then the rest of the shaved part in a different fancy colour. Kyary did this too!
So if you don’t manage to shape it maybe you could experiment with dye?

  35. Wow Martina you’re rocking it!!! I’m thinking about dyeing my hair but hummmm, ermmm… idk… purple maybe? anyways, you look gorgeous as always, keep it up!

  36. I would love to have this hairstyle but I’m too scared that it won’t turn out alright or that I’ll regret it! And also the worry that it will be a pain to grow out again is ever present. I had a friend who did that some years ago and it looked so cool and I’ve wanted to do it for a while now! Too scared… And since I’m looking for a job now I should probably wait until after the interviews are done

  37. Emi

That looks awesome! I’d do it myself if I had thicker/fuller hair, but mine is so thin that I’d have no hair left even if I did my research as good as you did :D You’re super cute with that side shave!

  38. Wow! That’s a great haircut Martina! I am sooooo jealous! I had thought of cutting mine in a purple/grey fauxhawk but, well, your look is cooler. My hair long now too and I’m not sure with winter coming, that I want to take away my protection, perhaps for the spring. 3 years ago I did your original assymetrical cut (I even brought in a screencap of you) but then coloured it dark purple (originally hot pink) in the bangs and underneath. The hairdresser thought I was crazy (and I had to get another hairdresser to fix it) but it looked awesome and even grew out nice because I have wavy/curly hair. I would post a photo, if this format let me.

I really liked the timelapse, the angle was great.

Cyber_3 – overwhelmed by the sheer amount of videos last week, no time to watch all, nevermind comment

  39. I like it. It kind of reminds me of Dara’s.

  40. I had an undercut for a year. Started with one side then did the other so I basically had a long mohawk I kept in a ponytail. HAHA the worst part was when I decided I wanted to grow it out (started seeing too many undercut/side shaves around town). I had to cut so much hair off! XD
