Hobbies Game

Students ask each other about their hobbies through this fun guessing game. Take a few minutes at the beginning the class to explain the rules, and then they’ll be speaking in English, listening to English, and responding in English for the rest of the class.

I've been teaching middle schoolers in Suwon for a month and your website is so helpful. This was a great idea! Thanks! (Donation may come later.) ;-)

I just want to share a comment for the benefit of other teachers who might use this idea…

I tried it just like this for my first class, but with almost 40 students it just went too slow. So… with other classes I gave 1 card per round desk (6 students). We did a round or two like that (they used the powerpoint to guess), with me taping the cards on the board to keep score. Then I gave one card per student, and put a piece of paper on each desk that had the options to guess from, and they played individually at their own tables. I monitored their language use and switched up the cards sets between the tables to keep things fresh.

We were doing a review day using "Are you interested in…" questions. So students asked "Are you interested in…?" and if a student had that card, she would answer, "Yes, I am." I added a bunch of ideas using verbs (Are you interested in writing a novel?) and nouns (Are you interested in fashion?).

Kids really liked playing both ways, but I think they followed the rules more in the group game. When they play among themselves, but they can get carried away. Laminating the cards is a good idea.
