How to Grow a Beard

A few months ago, I woke up and said to myself, “damn son, I think I should grow a beard.” And so I did. Here’s how!

Well, this isn’t really an accurate representation. I just thought the video would be fun to shoot. We gave up on it after a while because our schedule became insane. I think I stopped filming this right before we moved out of our old apartment, so you might recognize that wall. You’ll also see some scene changes from when we were in California at a few different locations.

Fun things to know about the beard: I get lots of food trapped in it. I now have to walk around with a handkerchief so I can wipe my mouth when I eat. I should look into getting some dapper handkerchiefs. I have only one at the moment, which I bought in Amsterdam. What’s the policy with handkerchiefs? How often do people wash them? I’d imagine people should use a new one every day, right?

Also, big thing I noticed about the beard: it definitely needs to be trimmed and lined up. I let it grow wild before, and didn’t trim the neckline, and it looked really bad as a result. Now that it’s shaped a bit more I think it looks significantly better.

Another thing: anyone know a good barbershop in Korea? I went to an awesome one, again in Amsterdam, where my beard trim took something close to an hour. They used hot towels, lots of lotions, did a close shave, put on aftershave (at which point I screamed and swore like a sailor), and really took care of me. I tried finding one in Korea, and I got a lukewarm towel and cold blade and was done in 15 minutes. If any beard growers here in Korea know of another place, I’d love to hear it!

  4. There is a salon here in Chicago that specializes in upkeep of long beards (you know like the over the zztop kind?) Not at all a helpful comment, but just felt like sharing because I wanted to write “over the zztop”.

  7. This is a really cool video and that was a massive effort to make it – well done!

I don’t believe that the barbers in Korea would have much experience with facial hair, be lucky you didn’t get a surprise clean shave! ;) I think you’re doing well with your beard, it’s very Dothraki et al but I don’t think I will be sold on this look for you, your mix of cool, somewhat-pretty-boy fashion is kind of Boratz-ed by your beard.

A hankerchief at minimum, but it may have trouble with cooking oils and soups; I would say travel wipes and a mini-comb and maybe a repellent lotion on the beard to start off with. Getting food stuck in your beard is like having a booger hanging from your nose – you can wipe it away but nothing can remove the residue from others’ minds. Beards also retain smells really well.

  8. Food in a beard is a deal breaker for me, but if you want a line of handkerchiefs then Fine and Dandy will have what you need.

Last time I was in New York I got the red striped denim one.

  10. I’m not a dude but I do watch barber videos sometimes for relaxation (it totally works if you get a good video, puts me right to sleep) and I think youtube would be a good way to search. If they have video up they’re probably confident in their work and they will show you their process so you know what you’re getting before you go in.

  13. Nice! I am always envious of those who can grow beards! Any advice on how to get a beard growing? Continuous shaving of invisible face hair? XD

  14. That was over waayyy too fast!! I wanted to sit back and enjoy the beard. Mmm yess.

My dad has never had his beard trimmed at a barber – it’s always been my mom, me, or my sis doing it. So I didn’t know that was a commercially offered service :/

….considering how many Koreans have beards (what….like 2?) Good Luck!!! Hah!! I saw a photo of Mithra (from Epik High) trimming his beard, but not in a salon…..How about asking Tiger JK?
