Rocket Diary – Yahwa

It could just be me, but doesn’t this kinda remind you a bit of GD&TOP’s “Oh Yeah?” When the guitar kicks in for the first few seconds, I just wanna sing “OH YEAH! OH OH OH YEAH!” Both songs have that kind of chill and have fun kind of feel to them. Not sure why. Anyhow, we’re really digging this song and we hope you like it as well. Kinda feel like we need to make a mega sized Korean Indie playlist including a whole bunch of indie songs, rather than just doing three vids a week. No?

BEATRONIQ “Gamjeon”

We’re not super crazy about this song, but it is something quite different that we don’t usually find in the indie scene. It has the feeling of Clazziquai, but with less bossa nova feel to it, and more rapping. I can’t remember the name of the track, but I heard another song by them that doesn’t have a music video, and I liked it a lot better than this song. It had a verrrry ethnic feel to it as well. Does anyone know what song I’m talking about? Anyhow, I haven’t really fallen in love with this band, but I’m gonna keep my eyes open for their other stuff.

We Got Underwear and Lots of Girls

I really hope that this song is up some people’s alleys. I know last week’s Turtle’s Swim Surprisingly Fast was a big hit with you all last week, because that song is so ridiculously cute and accessible. This song, though, is really long. It’s not even the full song. The video just abruptly cuts. And it’s not cute, or sing-a-long-y. It’s very moody music. But sometimes moody music is good, isn’t it? We love moody music. Kpop, we find, is upbeat and chipper, and good if you’re in the mood for it, but you can’t be in the mood for uppity pop music all the time, right? Some times you just want to zone out, stare out into the distance, or have some music in the background while you read. You know? Music like this, in our opinion, is perfect for it. We get it a lot in Western Indie music, but rarely in Korean Indie, so we’re really happy to hear this song. Yeah!

PLEASE REVIEW MAD SOUL CHILD for your K Crunch Indie playlist! :)

  2. Hey, Any chance you can do a Jisan Valley Rock Concert special edition. I don’t know any of the Korean bands so it would be cool to get some recommendations. Cheers. Love your stuff.

  3. I’m not totally sure if you have introduced us to the lovely two ladies of Oksang Dalbit, but here it goes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISG2OsTVXyg Real sweetheart feelgood music :) (backup version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBZHX_H6Lyk)

  4. HUGE fan of this week’s Indie Playlist. as always its my TOP #1 BESTEST FAVOURITIZED video of the week. keep em coming…. i’ll be here groovin out to quality tunes. wait… is groovin a word we are allowed to use anymore?

oh and PS as one of the fewer male members you have im SOOOOO happy with the fan-name you chose. not cutesy AT ALL!!!!

    your NASTY,

    Ryan (BrotherBadlips)

  5. The third song is super cool. Its the kind of music you listen to in the dark. Thanks for introducing it.

  6. I was wondering, Younha’s not really Indie but she’s not the typical kpop singer either, she’s kinda k-pop/k-rock (k-pop rock?) so I was wondering if you guys could review one of her songs? Her song “Run” just came out last month and I absolutely love it so I thought maybe you guys could do it for one of your Indie playlists?

    • it’s so sad that Younha has lost her international fans while she was gone for 1 year and half, but I think she can grab people who are in the fence regrading k.pop, she really does bring something different and I believe non-kpop people would real love her beside she was the original talent and beautiful singer before IU and Juniel. But I agree with you there.

  7. Paula Willis

I like the last track. Do you know of any other songs by them? I’d be quite keen to hear more but I’m scared of what will happen if I type ‘we go lots of underwear and girls’ into youtube…

  8.  i’m missin the K Crunch Cocktail, missing the old songs review. please continued the Cocktails please please

  9. NicHasTwoHands

Hey Simon or other erm…Nasties, could you please post where you can buy ‘We Got Underwear and Lots of Girls’ CD? I really liked it. Very awesome, thankyou for posting it in the K Crunch Indie playlist. :)

  10. Liked the first two, but not hot on the third. Sorry Simon. When I’m not in the mood for peppy pop music I listen to ballads or classical. Something with more structure.

  11. This week’s list was great! Love it :) something new in different genres that are not necessarily cute (although South Korea does cute like a boss). Good work kids! My favourite was probably Beatroniq.. I think the MV apart from being like Dexter, was maybe referencing like a S&M thing  gone wrong or like a death fantasy like what happened to the guy in Austria (he had a fantasy about being eaten). Can Spudgy host a whole video one time?

That girl is a true professional killer. She totally Dextered that man without even breaking a nail.

  13. The way the Rocket Diary lead singer holds his microphone makes him look like he is or is going to pick is nose. Anyone else notice that?

  14. I am not sure if this is the song by
BEATRONIQ that you were talking about in your blog post, but I thought this
song was interesting.  It is called 파렴치, which I think translates to Shameless, but not positive on that.
This is a link to a YouTube video that some one made with just the album art:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zt5a7Phq84.  Another great Indie Playlist; I love having
these to show people that Korean music is not all kpop, which most of the
people I know can’t really get into or understand.  Not to mention it can
sometimes be difficult to find good bands from other countries, seems like the
only ways I can find them is if I just stumble upon them.  So these
playlists are invaluable. :) Many thanks!

  17.  I liked all the songs. The start of the second song was like in action movie and I thought that she’s gonna touch him with that candle but she didn’t (ohh reading too much S&M mangas lol).
I was sure I’m gonna like the last because of the title and I totally agree with Simon about the mood in this song. Anyway you guys are awesome.

  18. Emilia Rychlik

Woooow! This week’s indie playlist was absolutely awesome! I really love all of the songs.
The last one, as you said, it’s not catchy nor cute, but it rocks still :)
Before I started to listen to k-pop I was a rock and metal fan, so I guess, there is still a significant part of me which needs this kind of music from time to time :)

  19. I loved We got underwear and lots of girls’ song. Its the type of music that wish I could find more of and I probably could if I looked harder =P Because of this I just stick with instrumentals from video games (Okami and Mother 3’s soundtrack are absolutely beautiful). I’m going to try seaching for more of their music. Thanks again for helping us keep up with k-indie <3

  20.  wow! Love these guys, and the rocket logo on the drums is super cool

  21. fuuko4869

Btw, I tried making a hashtag on Twitter for #WeGotUnderwearAndLotsOfGirls, but got 0 hits D:
Where are all their fans at???!!! Or are they asleep? :O

  22. AudreyKoopman

So I definitely enjoyed all three of the songs!

About the last one, all I could keep thinking about while listening to it was what scene would it go to in a movie. It is very movie-esque. Anyone else think so?

A couple scenes I imagined were like one were the main character is kind of in a slump, just kinda walking in the streets where everything but him is blurry and its gray tinted and all that good stuff. Or a scene could be one with a couple just kinda being lazy dazy, but more of like a remembrance scene after a breakup/death/whatever.
Or a scene used to show time passing quickly. Like, a skyline of a city, sun rising and falling, people and cars moving fast. Something like that.I don’t know, could just be me but its all I could think about.

  23. great picks, I know you post how to purchase the main songs on itunes or asia , how about the indie bands? Keep up the good work.
PS from colorado someone saw my EYK t-shirt and was screaming , lol it was fun.

  24. fuuko4869

I am in love with We Got Underwear and Lots of Girls. Googling it now. I think I’m really digging shoegaze and I owe it to you for introducing it to me – since that other shoegaze song, umm, Swimming Doll. Yea. I’ll make sure to put it on my usb next time I go for a late night drive outback. :)

  25. fuuko4869

Aaaaah I really liked this week, in fact I like all Indie playlists, but I have time now, so this is going to be a long post. lol. Brace yourselves.

    1. Simon and Martina, I love how you guys look this week :D
Simon looks really handsome in that hat, in fact my mom was saying something similar the other day too….that you look younger with a hat on…and so does my dad….anyway….yea.
Martina!! I love weird/interesting/relevant earrings too!!! ^o^ I have pencil&notebook earrings that I wear for exams, coathanger earrings when I do the laundry, car earrings when I go for a drive, sailboat&lifesaver earrings when I go to the beach…ahem. I digress. I also like the length of your fringe now, it felt strangely short before :/ My mother also appreciates the higher neckline of your top. Uh yea. She’s a conservative Asian mom and always comments on your deep necked tank tops, haha, and I tell her to get used to it, but she says you’re really pretty otherwise…..wait, not that it’s not pretty like that, it’s just she gets distracted from your face that way…..uh what am I saying….uh never mind. I like your top, especially the sleeves. Yeah! :p

    2. How do you manage to get me snorting every week with your playlist jokes? I was sure it was gonna get old, but you manage to catch me unawares every time. Even my sister who was eavesdropping started laughing randomly.

    3. Hey at the second video by Simon, wasn’t there a new background sound? Hold on let me just go back to it…yes, at the part when you said Martina is the coolest girl you know (that was really sweet by the way)

    4. Dexter reference!!! Woohoo!!! :D

    5. The first song was….nice….but probably the most normal out of the 3? As in, I’ve heard many similar songs before. I like it, though. But I lol’ed at the little boy on his tricycle who was staring at them. :p And perhaps the lead singer needs to stop picking his nose.

    6. When I heard the snippet of the second song, I really got a middle-eastern or bollywood vibe from it, so I was surprised when the song in its entirety sounded completely different. I loved it!! But I think Mrs. Banner McBannerson would not like it very much. And I can see why you said it was confusing – the scene where she killed the dude was unnaturally happy. Mmmmm. *furrows brow*

    7. Wow…..Simon when you started talking about going for a long drive with nothing in sight, I KNEW I was going to like the song. Reason being, I very frequently go for such drives, late at night (or early morning), by myself, along deserted rural highways where you can see nothing but the reflective bumps on the road and the occasional dead kangaroo….so romantic right….yes I’m emo like that. And YES I did love the song!! but why whyyyy did it cut off like so? >_<

    8. About mega-long indie playlists. That would be kinda nice too, perhaps? I've mentioned it before, but I've compiled all your indie suggestions into my own Youtube playlist, and listen to it on shuffle quite regularly. Like so: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL19839F260BD83162

    9. My mom REALLY liked Turtles Swim Surprisingly Fast from last week. It was so sweet hehe :D

    10. Another thought I had (although I don't think people would like it very much) – in order to give you more time to explore Korea and less sitting in front of the computer – is to work up a system similar to the alternating WANKs/FAPFAPs, but with music.
For example, make 2 charts, the k-POP charts, and the k-EVERYTHING ELSE charts. And alternate every week. That way you don't need the Indie charts, and perhaps even get rid of the Kpop chart updates? Since most people check the charts anyway? I feel many kpop fans would not like this, but if a potential Jpop Music Fridays is in the works, just….something needs to be cut down….
And then you'll have WANKs and FAPFAPs on Thursdays, alternating every week. And that would leave you with TL;DRs every other Wednesday, with perhaps another segment alternating with that? Or to cut it down even more, get rid of FAPFAPs altogether and alternate TL;DRs with WANKs?
After all, you also have all your live broadcasts too, which you seem to do every weekish~
Please don't get me wrong, I love, LOVE your videos, and I wouldn't mind watching them 24/7 (I practically already do). But, how shall I put it, as someone in the medical field, I am concerned for your health….and you're still so young….hahahaha I feel like a grandma now.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to dictate your life or anything. Just. I don't want you to be too overworked to actually have fun and enjoy what you're doing.
Plus, rarity makes it more special no? No?
If you think that was the worst idea anyone could have ever mentioned, tell me, and I will crawl into the wardrobe and reflect on my actions. :(

That is all. You were warned that it was going to be long. I love y’all.

    Sincerely, a NASTY :p

That Beatroniq video is going to give me nightmares.

  27. Wow liking the Rocket Diary. Thanks for all the new music. Have you ever thought of doing a “Jukebox Library” maybe your fans can fill out a “card file” where everyone can add Korean band and song. I try to read all the comments to get new bands/songs. However your fans are growing!! Good for you, bad for me WAY to many comments now. :) Then maybe you can flip through the “cards” and come up with your listening list. I know this sounds like a Pandora/Last.fm thingy, but this is based on your fans not on top 40 chart or a computer thinking it knows what I want to listen to. Okay I will stop chattering and back to the music!
