Welcome to this week’s special edition of the Indie Playlist, the viewer request edition! We’ve been getting a lot of requests lately (AWEEEESOME) so we decided to play catch up on some of them by making a special viewer request run edition. So make sure you stick around to the end of the playlist to check out the actual viewer request videos and to leave a thank you when you discover an amazing new band!
Our requesters this week come from the USA and Canada! Or at least we think so because we had to read their location off their youtube homepage so hopefully we didn’t screw that up…this is a pretty rock filled playlist which is really cool for us, but might not be cool for others. It’s actually kind of a fluke because we had some other requests for lighter sounding bands but we couldn’t fit everyone into one playlist. Anyhow, on to the list!
1. Mary from the USA requests Dear Cloud “Ice Fortress”
Starting with Dear Cloud (which we keep accidentally calling Deerhunter a totally different band that we love) who have a kind of Explosions In The Sky feel at first and then totally not at all. I guess that lingering raw guitar sound is linked with the sound of Explosions In The Sky to us, even though I’m sure tons of other bands did it before or at the same time as them. It’s hard to shake your original memory of a sound though, right? Just like when I played the The Strokes for my parents and they’re like, why is the quality so terrible? Is this a record or something? And I’m like…no it’s supposed to sound like that…and they’re like…why? BLANK STARES all around. Anyways, Dear Cloud! Make sure you check out some of their other stuff too, it’s really haunting and beautiful.
2. Peppered with Legacy from Brampton requests Rocktigers
The Rocktigers are a rockabilly band who we saw live and they were awesome. They have their own songs plus they cover lots of old classics including Elvis (if I can remember correctly) and they’re one of the largest Korean bands we’ve seen all squished up on a bar stage jumping and jiving. They also have incredible costumes which, now that I say that may not necessarily be costumes especially since rockabilly is very much a fashion trend now. I lovveeee the rockabilly look (Martina here) and I can’t wait for the summer to dig out all my huge fluffy vintage dresses and dance around to the Rock Tigers!
3. Beverly from the USA requests 10cm “Tonight I’m Afraid of the Dark”
10cm is a really popular band that I’m sure we’ll feature again on the Indie playlist, but I must confess, neither Simon nor I had actually listened to them. I guess sometimes you hear so much about one band that you just don’t get around to actually looking them up sometimes. Does that make sense? Anyways, they are a lovely band and now we see what all the fuss is about. They video is equally cute and matches the light feel of the song. If you’re feeling down, this song will lift you up. That was cheesy. I should just stop talking.
4. Fariah from Toronto, Canada requests Guys “New Stage”
Our last request is for a band called Guyz. I swear when I saw the lead singer, I thought he was Japanese because he has the typical thinly groomed eyebrows of a Japanese idol. I don’t know when this became trendy, but it just seems to be a Japanese thing to pluck or shave your eyebrows into really thin arches even if you’re a guy. Perhaps especially if you’re a guy. Guyz also release songs in Japanese since they’re big in Japan, so now I wonder if the lead singer is half Japanese or something. The really really sound like Jrock and that’s another thing that’s weird to say, but fans of jrock will know what we mean. It’s like there is a distinct sound that goes with a Jrock bands. Since we don’t know a lot about this band, someone please let us know if anything we just rambled about is true!
