Welcome to this week’s special edition of the Indie Playlist, the viewer request edition! We’ve been getting a lot of requests lately (AWEEEESOME) so we decided to play catch up on some of them by making a special viewer request run edition. So make sure you stick around to the end of the playlist to check out the actual viewer request videos and to leave a thank you when you discover an amazing new band!

Our requesters this week come from the USA and Canada! Or at least we think so because we had to read their location off their youtube homepage so hopefully we didn’t screw that up…this is a pretty rock filled playlist which is really cool for us, but might not be cool for others. It’s actually kind of a fluke because we had some other requests for lighter sounding bands but we couldn’t fit everyone into one playlist. Anyhow, on to the list!

1. Mary from the USA requests Dear Cloud “Ice Fortress”

Starting with Dear Cloud (which we keep accidentally calling Deerhunter a totally different band that we love) who have a kind of Explosions In The Sky feel at first and then totally not at all. I guess that lingering raw guitar sound is linked with the sound of Explosions In The Sky to us, even though I’m sure tons of other bands did it before or at the same time as them. It’s hard to shake your original memory of a sound though, right? Just like when I played the The Strokes for my parents and they’re like, why is the quality so terrible? Is this a record or something? And I’m like…no it’s supposed to sound like that…and they’re like…why? BLANK STARES all around. Anyways, Dear Cloud! Make sure you check out some of their other stuff too, it’s really haunting and beautiful.

2. Peppered with Legacy from Brampton requests Rocktigers

The Rocktigers are a rockabilly band who we saw live and they were awesome. They have their own songs plus they cover lots of old classics including Elvis (if I can remember correctly) and they’re one of the largest Korean bands we’ve seen all squished up on a bar stage jumping and jiving. They also have incredible costumes which, now that I say that may not necessarily be costumes especially since rockabilly is very much a fashion trend now. I lovveeee the rockabilly look (Martina here) and I can’t wait for the summer to dig out all my huge fluffy vintage dresses and dance around to the Rock Tigers!

3. Beverly from the USA requests 10cm “Tonight I’m Afraid of the Dark”

10cm is a really popular band that I’m sure we’ll feature again on the Indie playlist, but I must confess, neither Simon nor I had actually listened to them. I guess sometimes you hear so much about one band that you just don’t get around to actually looking them up sometimes. Does that make sense? Anyways, they are a lovely band and now we see what all the fuss is about. They video is equally cute and matches the light feel of the song. If you’re feeling down, this song will lift you up. That was cheesy. I should just stop talking.

4. Fariah from Toronto, Canada requests Guys “New Stage”

Our last request is for a band called Guyz. I swear when I saw the lead singer, I thought he was Japanese because he has the typical thinly groomed eyebrows of a Japanese idol. I don’t know when this became trendy, but it just seems to be a Japanese thing to pluck or shave your eyebrows into really thin arches even if you’re a guy. Perhaps especially if you’re a guy. Guyz also release songs in Japanese since they’re big in Japan, so now I wonder if the lead singer is half Japanese or something. The really really sound like Jrock and that’s another thing that’s weird to say, but fans of jrock will know what we mean. It’s like there is a distinct sound that goes with a Jrock bands. Since we don’t know a lot about this band, someone please let us know if anything we just rambled about is true!

  1. It’s funny because in the 10 cm vid, you hear the drum in the background but you never see him actually play it even though it’s right in front of him

  3. OOOH. I seriously loved all these requests. I swooned over the waffle dude from the Coffee Prince drama (Has to be one of my favorite dramas. 0_0), was wowed with the energy from the Rocktigers, got swept off my feet by 10cm (most favorite song I’ve heard from them so far), and head banged like a boss to GUYZ. Seriously, I am in love with New Stage. And the lead singer DOES look Japanese! (tried to focus on what the other band members look like too, but I was enjoying the song way too much) At least, that’s what I thought. Gonna try to find all these songs somewhere…iTunes, Amazon, Yesasia…I don’t care. I need that music IN ME right nao! Thanks for featuring these, Simon and Martina. :D

  4. And this may just me, but does the lead singer in Guyz look similar-ish to Yamamoto Yusuke? At least the eyes plus that hairstyle…

  5. Dear Cloud’s song was really good and the actor was very good looking as well haha. I especially love at the end when the guitar comes in really loud. I tend to enjoy parts like that in songs. The lead singer, when she starts into the chorus, gains a deeper sound to her voice and it kinda reminded me of Annie Lennox..which is probably a really weird thing to say. Rock Tigers and the whole rockabilly thing…yeah, that really isn’t doing it for me. That was the only song that I could not listen to all the way through. 10cm was really good as well. The song sounds familiar but I know I’ve never heard it before (unless its been in some drama) The song reminds me of like a commercial with one of two things happening: a nice spring morning sitting on a porch drinking a cup of coffee while on a porch swing or a couple painting a room a bright color. Once again, that was probably weird to say. But I really enjoyed it.

As for Guyz…I loved it. I’m really into Jrock and when the video started I totally thought the lead singer looked Japanese. Then I went and read your review, and the eyebrow thing makes sense (its actually something I’ve never picked up on before). But yeah, I’m gonna have to look more into them. They were my favorite this week.

  6. Don’t tell me you’ve never heard the Americano song by 10cm!
It was so repetitive and overplayed. Sometimes I thought the song was following me around b/c I’d just hear “americano~ 좋아 좋아 좋아~” ALL day long as I walked around. X]fun times. fun timesPhantom also used it in the 19 song.

  11. There is another band in the Korean rockabilly scene that is much better (saying this as a member of the US rockabilly scene), and used to be more authentic, called the Moonshiners. An example of their earlier rockabilly is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlGHTvj7bxg&feature=related

They have since been converted into more of a bubblegum rock group by the Man, but the sound is still good if you’re looking for something off the typical Korean indie track:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al2cafWA1FI&feature=relmfu

another great atypical Korean indie group is the Black Skirts, hope you’ve checked them out already, some really fun stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHuSSJ4ggwA (this is one of their first songs, but it’s a sound I’d never heard either in Korean or here in the west)

    • Yeah! Moonshiners were cool. They kinda started after Cha Cha met the RockTigers in Japan. If it wasn’t for the RockTigers, I wouldn’t have seen the Moonshiner or Galaxy Express. They’re all buddies.

  12. I’ve noticed Martina going for the rockabilly look with her pink kerchief head wrap.  It’s a cute look on her. The only thing about the rockabilly look that I don’t like is when rockabilly girls go fully tatted up ala Kat Von D.  However that’s because I like the vintage way more than the tattoos, so I think full sleeves are a distraction to the rockabilly look.  I suppose it just depends on what look a person wants to emphasize more.  Vintage made subversive with a couple of tattoos, or edgy tattoos made slightly softer with vintage.  Anyhoo!  Moving on!

I like the 10cm song.  Should I convert that? 3.93700787 inches according to the internet.  I also like Guyz and their angry eyebrows.
