Korean Robot Lockers

Filed as: Living in Korea // Responses: 2

Here’s another one of those videos of things that amaze us about Korea. The locker system they have for their malls are computerized! Why they are computerized, we can’t be too certain. The basic coin system we’ve known most of our lives seemed to have handled the job well enough, but, hey, computers make everything better! To use these lockers, you have to pump your cash into the computer, type in the number of the locker you want to lock with your stuff, and then turn the key. When you want to retrieve it, hit the retrieve button, type in your locker number, put in your key, and your stuff will still be there! For the life of us, we can’t figure out why we need the computer as a middle man. All we know for sure is that this locker system is definitely much more appreciated by us than the sad dog locking system we noticed a while ago. Anyhow, we made a video to explain the locking and unlocking process for you, so check it out!

What if you lose your key?

oh this computerized locker system is new in Korea too.
I know that you came 3 years ago, I think it started like 1 or 2 years before you came.
there were few reasons for this I forgotten most of it.
one I do remember is to charge you more! lol

if you use coin thing, then you put the coin in and get the key, and use the key to get your stuff back, and thats it!
but with this system, if you use it for more than certain time (I think its about 12 hours or 24), when you press the button to retrieve, the over-time fare will show up in the screen and you need to put more coin or bill to be able to access the locker. But 12, or was it 24 hours? anyway you get enough time to use it.

I heard that runaway teens and homeless people pack their luggages in those for like months, so when people try to use it, it was hard to find empty one, because out of 100 about 80 was like taken by homeless people. So by charging it by time, it will be too expensive to store stuff in there for long time, so other citizens can actually use these facilities.
