Kpop Music Mondays: SHINee “Lucifer”

Last week we started our first episode of Kpop Music Mondays with Miss A’s “Bad Girl, Good Girl.” This week we review SHINee’s “Lucifer.” This song is pretty huge in Korea now; we’re pretty much guaranteed to hear it at least once every 20 minutes if you’re walking down a busy street. No joke. It’s quite a change from their last song, Ring Ding Dong, in which they were angels. Now Lucifer? Devils? Angels? Anyone else see a theme here? Anyhow, the dance to Lucifer is insane. INSANE. Ring Ding Dong was a lot easier to mimic, while Lucifer is incredibly difficult. We’ve noticed that a lot of Korean Pop songs have easily imitable dance moves, which helps with marketing. But this?! The dance to Lucifer looks really, really good, but it’s hella hard to do. Hopefully you’ll learn a bit of it from this video (though we can’t promise we’re much good at the dance ourselves).

Also, the winner of last week’s Showdown between Miss A’s “Bad Girl, Good Girl” and T-ara’s “I Go Crazy Because of You” was Miss A. Final count was 152-114. Huzzah! This week we pit SHINee’s “Lucifer” against Girls’ Generation’s “Run Devil Run” and asks you which one is more devilish. Leave your votes in the comments below!

  3. i think you were close about the “her whisper is the lucifer” part. i don’t know Korean, so i’m forced to utilize english translations online, but to me it sounds like they’re basically talking about this woman that they (collectively, speaking as 1 dude) are in love with, but for some reason that’s a bad thing. therefore, her whisper is evil—the lucifer. and they may be choosing to use the word “Lucifer” partly because there’s the reference to Lucifer being the Angel of Light before he fell, so they’re saying she seems like an angel but she’s actually bad. if that doesn’t fit with the meaning of the Korean part, feel free to shoot that down. the translations i’ve looked at aren’t exactly the most clear.

soooo, yeah. i know this is late, but i just found this site and i thought i had a decent explanation for that line. as for the loverholic robotronic part……..yeah, i got nothing. i think that line is more about how it sounds than what it means.

  4. Arriane,

That would be great! Thanks for considering us :D Please send us a link once it's up! We'd love to see it.

  5. As for the English 'Loverholic Robotronic–' This miiiight be a stretch, but there are Korean condoms called Love Holic–maybe SHINee's advocating safe robotic sex?

    Funny video, as usual.

  6. While I won't agree that these songs don't have musical merit, I will agree with you that much of the reason why these songs are so popular is because of marketing. I won't say that the songs are masterpieces to be forever praised: they're catchy even if you only hear them on the radio, but they don't have much longevity. People get sick of them easily. Pop music follows trends and doesn't do much to create original sounds; once the trend is old the music can't be stomached. But, for the time being, they're relevant just like the news is relevant.

And I don't think that explaining the marketing behind the songs is going to be useful to middle school students, though. I mean, I remember when I was a kid, our taste in music defined our image and the groups we hung out with. It gave us an identity when we were still trying to figure ourselves out. It brought us together with likeminded people. When we grew up, though, we started to see through it all, and started to look for other kinds of music instead. So, sure, I don't agree with the images or the marketing techniques, but telling this to young kids isn't really that useful yet, though it will be one day.

  7. Hey guys, it's good that you are trying to relate to students. But seriously, how is that song useful in an English class?

Besides, I have yet to hear a KPop song match even the most mediocre dance song from the 80s. For an example of such a mediocre song check out:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3KrL7BQBpc

The suspended note in that song I guess could be comparable to the single note repeated over and over again in eighth notes that you hear in Super Junior's "Sorry Sorry". But still…

    • Students talk about this song all of the time. If you know about the song, you can relate to them. See them doing the dance? Sing a bit of the song, and they'll be amazed. TEACHER! YOU KNOW SHINEE?! Tell them you do, tell them you like the song, but that the English is so bad! Tell them why and, voila, great teachable moment right there.

The more your students think you can relate to them, the more they'll want to talk to you in English, the more they'll initiate conversations. When another new song comes out, they might run to your class between periods and ask if you know it. At least, that's what happens to us.

  11. my vote = lucifer.
but i have a suggestion for music mondays: why not play the song that you're reviewing the background of the vid? OR…at least play a clip of it.

so far, i know all the of the 2 songs that you've reviewed, but it's still hard to get a grasp of what you're talking about when i can't hear the song. just a suggestion.

    • We post links to the songs at the end of the video. We can't actually post the music in our videos because that's copyrighted content, and we can get in trouble for doing that. Sorry!

  14. Totally voting for Shinee's Lucifer

  15. I dont really think of either of them being "devilish" but I think I will vote for SHINee's Lucifer to win !! I kept wanting to compare them to DBSG in which case they would have lost by like a million !! hah :o)

  16. Thanks! The Keroro shirt was bought in Korea, while Simon's shirts are bought online, either at Threadless or Busted Tees.

  18. SNSD!!!! Dance and the song are soo catchy

  19. robotronic and all that jibberish = "Konglish" … maybe?!?!?!?!?! Anyway my little boy likes to dance to SNSD stuff so I'll vote with SNSD. Although I have not heard of Shinee until I recently. By the way your site has provided my wife and I some good chuckles. Also thanks for the transit and cultural info since we'll be visiting seoul in a few weeks, i'm sure it'll come handy.

  20. Well, you know what Shinee's Lucifer is good as well…

  21. I prefer Girls' Generation(소녀시대)_RunDevilRun(런데빌런), they're sassy and that makes it more devilish. Also, the beat is good.

  22. I would say shinee is more devilish, because, i don't know if anyone else noticed….but i'm pretty sure the MV is also a car commercial. they were seriously whoring those cars.

    • HA! I noticed, too. Didn't have room to put it in the video, but I thought the whole thing was a Kia commercial

  23. Kay

Going to have to go with Shinee's Lucifer. SNSD Run Devil Run I feel is more like a "girl-power" anthem, like that they aren't going to take any more crap. Lucifer seems much more "devilish"?

  24. Run devil Run I thinks its because i have an SNSd app on my iphone and just so addicting watch and listen to their videos

  25. SHINEE ALL THE WAAAY~~ Lucifer was like the angel that was sent down from heaven and became satan so…much more devillish…
i think loverholic means a person who is addicted to his lover, cuz when you add the holic suffix, it means addiction right? haha
for robotronic i think it has the same meaning as fantastic elastic

  26. Shinee's Lucifer is a way better song then Run Devil Run!! I think the Lucifer dance is way cooler too!

  27. Lucifer, Snsd 's run devil run is a good song, but Lucifer is deff more sinister >:D

  28. MSA

Oh, Martina, I feel your pain. I loved the MV and I was ready to love the live performances, too… until I saw those AGH! THEY BURN MY EYESSSS outfits. Fans seem to love the rainbow outfits – I can't even begin to fathom WHY, though.
My vote goes to Lucifer <3 SNSD are pretty, and the song is catchy, but I wouldn't call it Devilish.

  29. Jay

Lucifer is waaaaay better then Run Devil Run!

  30. Great idea and cool video! Keep up the good work, guys!

btw, my vote is for RUN DEVIL RUN!

  31. Shinee! :D I like SNSD but tend to prefer other groups since anyone going up against them is the underdog :p

  32. I totally had no clue that RDR was a cover! Thanks for sharing.

    • MSA

Interesting, I heard the opposite – Ke$ha's version being the cover. Oh well, I don't really care either way xD

      • Oi~ it's a confusing one. I did a little deeper investigating (Google = trusty research aid) and found this:

        1. Ke$ha sung it first (Aug '08).
        2. However, she sung it as a "demo" song that was never officially released on any of her albums. It was leaked online as is the trend.
        3. SNSD's people very legally bought the rights to the song, adding a little Korean pizazz [피자스?] (March '09)
        4. And the rest is SNSD/Girl's Generation history.

Hence, RDR isn't a "cover," though our lovely American trainwreck, Ke$ha, did technically sing-talk it first. Let me know if anyone finds otherwise! ;)

BTW, is anyone else EXCITED about the new K-drama Haru/One Day/하루 coming out (tentatively) at the end of this month?? BIG BANG! Woop, woop!

  33. Shinee doesn't compare to Run devil run!!!
BTW K-pop Monday's makes the rest of the week run super duper smooth!
    Thanks guys!

  34. Lucifer by a mile. No comparison.

    • I love how everyone's voting for different people by a landslide, mile, and a million. Ha!

  35. ps.. just watched the vid from 21-28secs and ive never noticed the kung fu sounds till now hahahah!

  36. hahahaha! Spudgy at the end.. i cant do the dance but now i learnt the samurai moves ;)
Also that mouth move thingy the guys are doing now in kpop i dont understand either.. i still think its a little weird lol! Hope it doesnt catch on in the UK (guys outside malls doin that move to girls will only get disgusted looks LOL)

Lovaholic robotronic – i thought it was about the evil woman (lucifer) way of loving? She loves robotically? =/

Now for the song, i say Shinee all the way.. much better then SNSD

Great work.. look foward to seeing more (im guessin next week will be 2ne1?)

  37. Run Devil Run. By about a million.

  38. The level of cuteness in both groups is comparable, so it's rally hard to say whather any of them is devilish xD but still, I choose Shinee! :)
