First off, we want to take the time to thank you for all of your awesome support. This is our 52nd Music Monday, our one year anniversary of doing this show, and we didn’t expect it to be where it is today. We first started the show, because many people were asking us to do more How to Dance Kpop videos, and we thought that we’d do it for a couple of months. But everyone’s responses were phenomenally supportive and encouraging, from your fan pics, to emails, to comments, to relentlessly spamming us lovingly on Twitter and Facebook to get us to review your favourite artists. Really, thanks everyone for liking this show and giving us the inspiration to keep on scripting and filming! To show our thanks, we’re having our biggest giveaway ever, which we’ll explain at the end of the post.

But first, our One Year Anniversary Special! We usually just talk about one video for Music Mondays, and we usually count your requests to decide who we review, but today we’re doing the videos we want to do, the videos that didn’t get enough votes to win for the week. We’re doing, finally, UV’s “Itaewon Freedom” and Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication.” We were going to dedicate our entire anniversary special to just one, but – hell – we feel so strongly about both videos that we had to do both.

Itaewon Freedom:

This is the greatest video ever made. That is all.

If we ever got the money and crew and equipment to direct a Kpop music video, we’d make this video. If we had money to make a second video, we’d make this video again.

What makes this video so awesome is its context. Really. Kpop videos have been over-saturated with sexy boys and girls looking sexy on camera, doing sexy things and making sexy face. They train for countless hours to perfect the crispiest choreography. And we get that with just about every Kpop video that comes out, and – really – we get something like two to three kpop videos being released per week.

This video comes as a breath of fresh air. For those of you that don’t know, UV are actually well known comedians in Korea, and they’ve been around for a while, but this is 100% our favourite song by them. You got three older guise that aren’t necessarily the sexiest Korean guise out there and who aren’t necessarily the best dancers (although JYP’s guest appearance is prettttty awesome), all creating a rockingly entertaining video with crap sets and bad effects.

So for those of you that also don’t know about Itaewon, it’s a district in Seoul near a USA army base, so it has developed into a very foreigner friendly neighbourhood. It has import grocery stores, real foreign food (like authentic Indian food and the Irish Wolfhound Pub), and a foreign crowd. So, Korean people that go there can really let loose and act “foreign” which means, dress however you want and enjoy the non-judgemental atmosphere. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it can sometimes be preeeettttyyy sketchy on the weekends after everyones been out drinking and dancing and *coughpickingfightscough* so we don’t really like that neighbourhood as much as we love Hondgae. But still, if you live in Korea, you learn to appreciate how Itaewon can comfort you when you feel homesick. That’s why Itaewon Freedom has ranked as a favourite amongst many foreigners in Korea that aren’t into kpop music. *Martina wipes away a tear and sucks it up to buy a super overpriced can of root beer*

One of the things that’s difficult for us when talking about this video is in saying anything funny about it. UV are comedic geniuses, and they’ve pre-emptively took all of our jokes from us. What can we say about it? Their outfits are bad? They wanted them to be bad. That their dancing sucks? They know that it sucks, and make it awesome in the process. That their special effects are silly? You don’t get that bad by accident. Being this bad, is an artform.

The video’s outdated, looks like the worst that the 80s has to offer. And the guys are too old to compete with the likes of young kpop boyz. But they take their weakness and make it their strength. It’s so…inspiring. Sure, they’re not taking themselves seriously. They’ve got the blanket of irony protecting them from criticism, but – hell – that doesn’t make this song less awesome.

Furthermore, they’ve got JYP, Overlord of one of the top Kpop labels in Korea, singing and dancing with them. That’s what really makes this song and video special for us. JYP, who knows the kpop scene very well, takes part in a kind of anti-kpop video. It’s just so…poetic. Too awesome for words.

Intoxication:

–Note–This is the shorter version. Why it’s shorter, we don’t know. Probably because it’s too sexy to air in its entirety.

Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication” holds just as special a place in our hearts as Itaewon Freedom. We can’t begin to tell you how much we love the song. It’s epic. They lyrics are epic. The video is epic. The dancing is epic. But we don’t love it because it’s good (< ---speak for yourself Simon). We love it because it's sooooooo bad, but - unlike Itaewon Freedom - it doesn't mean to be so bad. And because of that, we love it even more.

Don't get angry at us, Junsu fans. This song is ridiculous...ridiculously sexy, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable. Junsu has written the Korean equivalent to 90's R&B...which Simon grew up listening to:"DO YOU MIND IF I STROKE YOU UP? I don't mind...*punch*---OKAY! SIMON IS CUT OFF!!!! We were amused rather than aroused (<---speak for yourself Martina), but our amusement is endless. And, in turn, our amusement turned into love, pure, pure love for this song.

Some people might be confused about the bananas joke. Nowhere does Junsu ever mention that he wants to rub bananas in the song, but the story behind it is this: when Martina was playing it on loop within the first couple of weeks of being introduced to the song, I - Simon here - heard the song in passing, when in another room. From the muffled sound of it, the part where Junsu says "let me feel your naughtiness" sounded like "let me feel bananas." As well, the part where he says "Momomoto, momomoto" in Japanese, I heard "Not a homo, not a homo." And so, my mishearing of the song led to our laughter, which led to an endless inside joke between us, which has since been translated to our videos. So, no, Junsu does not love bananas, nor does he want to rub them (<---speak for yourself Simon and Martina). But in our hearts, Junsu's passion for rubbing bananas is limitless.

And funny side note...a few of my students (Martina) had begged me to play this song at the end of class. Without knowing how utterly raunchy this song was, I agreed. As the video played, my students covered their eyes, screamed and yelled things like, "AH TEACHER!!! DIRTY!!" and "OH NO! TEACHER NO!" and other awesome phrases while I stared on in shock. I'm pretty sure I corrupted about 80% of that class. My bad. Or should I say, JUNSU'S BAD!!! (ps-> got the same reaction from Rain’s “Hip Song”…oh innocent Korea…)

I laughed so hard at the part where Martina’s pretending to be GD and Simon’s TOP and he’s like dude, did you read to your date again? lol but all your videos are awesome!

  14. You guys made so many rawrsome videos, it’s really hard to choose my favourite moment from this year. ^^ So, because I really can’t leave just one, I’ll show you my Top 3. <3
    1. JYJ Ayyy Girl – Why? Because it was the beginning of a new era! Simon, you said "Maybe it's the beginning of a new trend?" Oh my, you were so right :D Every time my friend and I hear the song we have to roll down our sexy windows! And I especially loved the "punch a harmless eagle in the eye"-scene. i'm laughing while writing this because i have to think of it. Going to watch it later again… over… and over again. xD
    2. Jay Park Abandoned – Loved Martina's yeahs :D especially the "uhm… yeah" at the end~ And, of course, the "fantastic elastic supersonic hypertonic give it to my Y make a love baby if you wanna pretty"-line? EPIC! <3
    3. GD&TOP High High – "Ghetto Electro – Originating from Korea, it was first heard in the mythological pairing of a dragon and a white haired extremely good looking man" hilarious x'DD Yeah, I guess that man really is extremely good looking!
Yeah, that's it. I loved all the scenes with Mordney, too. And you should know that each one of your videos makes me laugh so hard. <3 Hugs and Greetings from Austria to the Spudgy because he really is pretty. Eatyourkimchi Fighting!
(sry for bad english and for the supersonic long comment ^^')

  15. One of my Favorite moments was in the review of T-ara’s YAYAYA (i think).  Simon chews out the pilot for not enjoying being tied up and flirted with. Priceless. Also Martina’s TOP obsession. (…and there’s TOP in cup!) Generally, you guys just make me laugh til I can’t breathe at least once a week :) Congrats on 52 music mondays!!!

  16. My favorite moments are tied. First, is the one for “Hello” by Shinee, where Simon gives Moredy Present to his dad. Then there’s Martina’s holy moment when GD&TOP’s High High came out. And then there’s the Spudgy. He’s an adorable, abominable snow man in disguise! I wonder what would happen if he came to america… would he have a fit over stuffies (stuffed animals) there too? Oooooh, boy. He likes them foreign.

You guys are great!!! <3 Love from Sweden

“MAX TIME!” is the most epic & wonderful thing I’ve heard ^_^
now whenever I turn of a lamp I need to say “max time”

  22. what..u guise have been here for only ONE year? it seems like it has been forever!!

i cant remember the first Kpop Music Monday video that i watched but i do remember, after watching the first one, i watched the previous Kpop Music Monday vids one after another, up to 5 hours straight. Simon&Martina’s vids are that addictive! i enjoyed every one of them

My fav one would be ….(man its hard to choose!)…2pm’s Hands Up
i loved it cause u guys stay true to ur guts in saying what was totally wrong with the MV despite knowing that there are thousands 2pm fans out there saying that it was all cool etc. its good to see someone pointing out the truth about all this MVs, as we only get to read about the praises online..

i always make my Monday nights free to catch ur videos (it airs around 11pm here in my country), u totally made Monday worth waiting for. Thank You and Congratulations on ur One Yr Anniversary. May this be a sign of more years to come!

p/s i’ll vote for Itaewon freedom!!

  23. It was really hard to choose one thing that I liked about Kpop Music Mondays…there are so many memorable moments. So here are just a few of the ones that make my list: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5d2pUfU_1k .
The way you guys have “flourished” throughout the year is
noticeable as one watches video after video, each with its very own trademark
moments. From delving into the true names of kpop groups like Batoost,
Bilasa, GoNa…To naming the dances in a way the rest of us can understand, like “the
zombie dance,” or either “rolling down” or “washing sexy windows.” To
the hilarious skits that show us how to get second samples in Korean
supermarkets or how future robots will mock us. Martina’s obsession with
TOP and Simon’s sharp listening skills when it comes to
Engrish…seriously, what is there not to love? Watching you do this show is like living, if only for a few minutes, in another space where everything makes sense. Thank you, Simon and Martina, for a wonderful ride. Keep up the amazing work :)

  26. I have a trick to pronounce Xiah, I just hope I pronounce it right keke. I see You! => I see ya =>K~see ya. Makes any sense? XD As My favorite Kpop Music Mondays, it’s U-Kiss – 0330, crazy edition. Why? 1st: It was the first Kpop Music Mondays I ever saw, and it was hilarious and epic awesome! 2nd: When you guys met Ukiss, they reacted to that vid, saying you were making fun of them, And one guy even said: ‘I’m the one who wrote R squared PI!  HAHAHAHAH FUNNY. 3rd: What’s up with the room? I love it you can point back to their music Mondays and say: IT’S UKISS CALLING! 4th: I loved the plot you guyz came up with for their MV!  Grumpy stalker friends, girlfriend dial tone, HUGE DELUSIONAL DREAM!. 5th: THANK YOU for explaining, don’t deny our R squared PI! 6th: I really liked Martina’s earrings ^___^. Thank you Simon and Martina for making each Monday such an AWESOME KPOP MUSIC MONDAY DAY!

  27. oh god… its hard to choice but i really like the top’s turn it up.. i know its old and my bias is TOP like Martina.!! ahahah and simon getting taped in my mouth ahhah.:)) i really love that part.!! ahahah 100% TOP in everywhere.!! ahahah TOP TOP TOP..!!! :) MONKEY MAGIC i hope i win…XD

  28. Its so hard picking out one but if I had to choose I would choose the godly edition with JYJ’s Ayy Girl. I loved the rolling down my sexy windows part. I’ve done that dance so many times during parties after watching that video(my friends think I’m weird). I think this is one of the most iconic Music Mondays, because when I think of Music Mondays I instantly think “rolling down my sexy window”.

  29. My favorite music monday was this week’s Music Monday 1 year special. Uv & Jyp’s epicness mixed with Simon’s raunchy yet sexy dancing did it for me. This video made my day. It was perfect. Thrusting, face raping, nasty lyric writing, banana groping, epic Gandalf battle against Naughtyness. Everything was just perfect. XD You guys are awesome. Sex on legs. ;3

  30. For me, my favorite is 2NE1’s Ugly ~ i really like how Simon describe them with the “Like a Man” concept and the part where simon have 3 picture of himself with the “aegyo”/cutie girl !! xD !! And also the part where Martina spray Simon with the … spray thing [sorrie !!] and Simon is like :”whAAAt THE??!?!??” xD !! AND not least !! the SPUDGY song !! that is the one i like it the most !! <3 u guys ~
[Actually, i like the WHOLE 2NE1-Ugly Music Video you did and also sorry if i have any spelling error !!]

  32. FAVORITE EPISODE:

    G.NA’s Black & White

    “The Showdown”

[Stating the results from previous question: What song represents your feelings for Valentine’s Day? The romantic ‘Baby Goodnight’ by GD&TOP or the sad but fierce ‘Bad Man’ by Joo]

MARTINA: “Last week, we asked you something that doesn’t really matter that puts someone against, doesn’t really matter because it was GD & TOP, and GD & TOP and blah, blah, blah, and GD & TOP won. YAY GD & TOP!”

“I’m pretty sure no matter what […] they’re always going to win because they’re going to the win the award for everything for the rest of their lives.”

SIMON: “What if it’s a Stupid award?”

    [Martina glares]

    MARTINA: “……… weieorheiwohitauewrioweiorhwioe SHUT UP!”

After this event, I have adapted Martina’s mannerisms.

    WIN.

  33. I am late!! QQ
Nevertheless, my favourite episode is the one where you reviewed “Heart To Heart!”, because that was the very first one I saw and I was hooked to your show after that.

A news flash for people living in Australia! There is a KPop concert in Sydney on Nov 12th. The promotions were not that widespread and I stumbled upon it by accident, but  .. KPOP CONCERT IN OZ LAND .. WAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
THe line up includes SNSD, Kara, Sista, 4Minute, Shinee, MBlaq and a few more. Tickets are going fast, at least the good ones are! The VIP Seating was already full by the time I logged in, so I had to get the VIP standing ones .. at least its close to the stage ….

Jihyun, my love, at last .. we will meet face to face .. ( .* faints with delight *)

  34. Ayy Girl. It revolutionized the world of kpop with its sexy windows. I never looked back. Thanks guise XD

  35. Fave music Monday was man man hani XD yes the man bra with the song and everything XDOh and definitely bilasa and of course BROHOHO BROHOHO~Martina you made me into a bigbang/gd and top fan ^_^

  36. I love Infinite’s Be Mine video. I love how you brought mordney into the video and talk about vampires. I love how both of you, Simon and Martina, can make me laugh on days I feel extremely down. And! Lastly, I love how awesome yet epic can Spudgy’s dance be. ILOVEYOUSIMONANDMARTINA!!

  37. I love TVXK’s Why (Keep your head down) video. Although I love all the brohoho’s and mordney’s, you guys introduced me to dbsk through that video. I’ve never heard of dbsk and when i heard keep your head down, i fell in love.
thanks for bringing new music to me. :D
    love y’all. :D

  38. Congrats on the one year anniversary!  My favorite kpop music monday moment is when Simon pronounces B1A4!  It makes me LOL everytime I hear it!  You guys are so creative!

  39. hmmm. My favorite was Ukiss- 0330. This was by far one of your most epic Music Mondays! Shall I list the reasons why? Of course I will. 1.Giving the love of your life underwear to dry herself off with.
2.fantastic elastic! 3. Dongho’s grumpy stalker friends in the cafe, and no wifi!! 4. His friends still be lurkin’ 5. Dongho uses his last quarter talking to dial tone. 6.The solo expresso  7.Damn! you’re so good at Mario Kart girl!  8.Get your hands off my girlfriend you filthily bastard!  9.Laughter is the best medicine for schizophrenia.. 9. MORDNEY!!! 10. Baby I’ll whip out the length of my hypotenuse.  Yep….I don’t think it gets any better than that….unless you add a man bra that matches you man man panties…
Thank you so much for a year of amazing music video reviews. <3

  40. agh, this is so hard to choose TT_____________TT
you guys have had so many awesome videos
umm… i think my favorite is big bang’s tonight
it was so funny when you guys switched bodies… martina’s… er, simon’s “oh my god, i have boobs! this is totally awesome! time to celebrate!” XD
plus, similarly with all the other videos, but more so with this one because big bang is one of your bias, criticism was still made when necessary and credit was still given when it should have been. basically you guys are fair no matter what and create your reviews based on the video and song only, not the band, which keeps me a loyal subscriber every week :)btw, did you realize simon is wearing the same shirt that he did in the very first kpop music mondays? XD
