First off, we want to take the time to thank you for all of your awesome support. This is our 52nd Music Monday, our one year anniversary of doing this show, and we didn’t expect it to be where it is today. We first started the show, because many people were asking us to do more How to Dance Kpop videos, and we thought that we’d do it for a couple of months. But everyone’s responses were phenomenally supportive and encouraging, from your fan pics, to emails, to comments, to relentlessly spamming us lovingly on Twitter and Facebook to get us to review your favourite artists. Really, thanks everyone for liking this show and giving us the inspiration to keep on scripting and filming! To show our thanks, we’re having our biggest giveaway ever, which we’ll explain at the end of the post.

But first, our One Year Anniversary Special! We usually just talk about one video for Music Mondays, and we usually count your requests to decide who we review, but today we’re doing the videos we want to do, the videos that didn’t get enough votes to win for the week. We’re doing, finally, UV’s “Itaewon Freedom” and Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication.” We were going to dedicate our entire anniversary special to just one, but – hell – we feel so strongly about both videos that we had to do both.

Itaewon Freedom:

This is the greatest video ever made. That is all.

If we ever got the money and crew and equipment to direct a Kpop music video, we’d make this video. If we had money to make a second video, we’d make this video again.

What makes this video so awesome is its context. Really. Kpop videos have been over-saturated with sexy boys and girls looking sexy on camera, doing sexy things and making sexy face. They train for countless hours to perfect the crispiest choreography. And we get that with just about every Kpop video that comes out, and – really – we get something like two to three kpop videos being released per week.

This video comes as a breath of fresh air. For those of you that don’t know, UV are actually well known comedians in Korea, and they’ve been around for a while, but this is 100% our favourite song by them. You got three older guise that aren’t necessarily the sexiest Korean guise out there and who aren’t necessarily the best dancers (although JYP’s guest appearance is prettttty awesome), all creating a rockingly entertaining video with crap sets and bad effects.

So for those of you that also don’t know about Itaewon, it’s a district in Seoul near a USA army base, so it has developed into a very foreigner friendly neighbourhood. It has import grocery stores, real foreign food (like authentic Indian food and the Irish Wolfhound Pub), and a foreign crowd. So, Korean people that go there can really let loose and act “foreign” which means, dress however you want and enjoy the non-judgemental atmosphere. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it can sometimes be preeeettttyyy sketchy on the weekends after everyones been out drinking and dancing and *coughpickingfightscough* so we don’t really like that neighbourhood as much as we love Hondgae. But still, if you live in Korea, you learn to appreciate how Itaewon can comfort you when you feel homesick. That’s why Itaewon Freedom has ranked as a favourite amongst many foreigners in Korea that aren’t into kpop music. *Martina wipes away a tear and sucks it up to buy a super overpriced can of root beer*

One of the things that’s difficult for us when talking about this video is in saying anything funny about it. UV are comedic geniuses, and they’ve pre-emptively took all of our jokes from us. What can we say about it? Their outfits are bad? They wanted them to be bad. That their dancing sucks? They know that it sucks, and make it awesome in the process. That their special effects are silly? You don’t get that bad by accident. Being this bad, is an artform.

The video’s outdated, looks like the worst that the 80s has to offer. And the guys are too old to compete with the likes of young kpop boyz. But they take their weakness and make it their strength. It’s so…inspiring. Sure, they’re not taking themselves seriously. They’ve got the blanket of irony protecting them from criticism, but – hell – that doesn’t make this song less awesome.

Furthermore, they’ve got JYP, Overlord of one of the top Kpop labels in Korea, singing and dancing with them. That’s what really makes this song and video special for us. JYP, who knows the kpop scene very well, takes part in a kind of anti-kpop video. It’s just so…poetic. Too awesome for words.

Intoxication:

–Note–This is the shorter version. Why it’s shorter, we don’t know. Probably because it’s too sexy to air in its entirety.

Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication” holds just as special a place in our hearts as Itaewon Freedom. We can’t begin to tell you how much we love the song. It’s epic. They lyrics are epic. The video is epic. The dancing is epic. But we don’t love it because it’s good (< ---speak for yourself Simon). We love it because it's sooooooo bad, but - unlike Itaewon Freedom - it doesn't mean to be so bad. And because of that, we love it even more.

Don't get angry at us, Junsu fans. This song is ridiculous...ridiculously sexy, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable. Junsu has written the Korean equivalent to 90's R&B...which Simon grew up listening to:"DO YOU MIND IF I STROKE YOU UP? I don't mind...*punch*---OKAY! SIMON IS CUT OFF!!!! We were amused rather than aroused (<---speak for yourself Martina), but our amusement is endless. And, in turn, our amusement turned into love, pure, pure love for this song.

Some people might be confused about the bananas joke. Nowhere does Junsu ever mention that he wants to rub bananas in the song, but the story behind it is this: when Martina was playing it on loop within the first couple of weeks of being introduced to the song, I - Simon here - heard the song in passing, when in another room. From the muffled sound of it, the part where Junsu says "let me feel your naughtiness" sounded like "let me feel bananas." As well, the part where he says "Momomoto, momomoto" in Japanese, I heard "Not a homo, not a homo." And so, my mishearing of the song led to our laughter, which led to an endless inside joke between us, which has since been translated to our videos. So, no, Junsu does not love bananas, nor does he want to rub them (<---speak for yourself Simon and Martina). But in our hearts, Junsu's passion for rubbing bananas is limitless.

And funny side note...a few of my students (Martina) had begged me to play this song at the end of class. Without knowing how utterly raunchy this song was, I agreed. As the video played, my students covered their eyes, screamed and yelled things like, "AH TEACHER!!! DIRTY!!" and "OH NO! TEACHER NO!" and other awesome phrases while I stared on in shock. I'm pretty sure I corrupted about 80% of that class. My bad. Or should I say, JUNSU'S BAD!!! (ps-> got the same reaction from Rain’s “Hip Song”…oh innocent Korea…)

ToFebruary
Gmarket
  1. Watched rain bi’s hip dance my fing god ndufendnhddnddhn my overies

  2. I totally love the elevator scene in you Psy Gamnam Style parody

  3. That is very hard question as I enjoyed all Music Mondays – every episode is unique and very very funny! Thank you guys, for such an enjoyable way to spend time every Monday!Well… my most-favorite and most-rewatchable was SHINee Sherlock KMM. As a shawol it seemed very funny for me to see you laughing at my favorite idols! This was so hillarious! I liked just every moment of that KMM. From the full of sexiness Simon-Taemin to the awesome “I’m so curious” dance. I will never forget Taemin’s Doritos (every time I sing this song in the lyrics I sing exactly Doritos, nothing else, thanks to you :D). But the moment when I practically died from laughing was the scene from the “supermarket” when Martina “brought” Porn-Sherlock CDs. I mean they DO really look like child’s porn, it is so awkward to have such porn-magazined on my shelf.

Anyway, congratulations with anniversary, guys, you are the best! I hope you will celebrate you 2nd, 5th, 10th and whatever else! (and create a fan club with its name already! :DDDDDDD)

  4. my favorite kpop music mondays video was “EXO’s what is love.” I loved the way simon irritated martina with singing the song and dancing to it…..”

Well I really LOVED when you guys did the “how to dance” section for Super Junior’s Sorry Sorry. When I saw that I busted out laughing for about 5 minutes because I would NEVER have thought of “starting the fire, dropping the fire and catching on fire” as a way to look at the dance, and it actually helped me learn the dance :P In fact my brother (who doesn’t care for kpop) walked in and saw me laughing and watched the video himself… next thing i know he is on the ground laughing and wanted to try the dance too. Anyways you guys rock!!

  11. jericho98

i know this doesnt help but cant choose both have awsome hip thrusting, but junsu made me drool, and uv made me laugh . man its hard

  12. I live in a country where NOBODY KNOWS K-pop and nobody knows you guys! Each and every day I have to see your videos to get my daily rush of Korea with an awesome sense of humour on top.

K-pop Mondays are my favourite theme-day-videos, so it’s sooo difficult to pick one!!!!
But if I really had to I’ll pick the one about 2NE1 ‘I am the best’, not only because I think 2NE1 is an awesome group of kick ass girls, but also because I loved when Simon was dressed up so he looked like a pimp and Martina had to play the innocent girl who wanted a gun, I laughed so hard when it went from ‘bang bang bang’ to ‘Baaaaang Baaanng diiieee, those are my shoeeees’ :P

Thank you for being you guys!
It sounds cheesy but It just have to be said cause you’re the most awesome couple on this planet!

  13. My favorite is kind of a 3 way tie.
I was a big fan of the Itaewon Freedom/Intoxiaction mashup video. I love both of those and it was a lovely surprise to see them both in the same video.
The other would be Bubble Pop. Absolutely hularious….specially Simon’s crazy swag dance moves.
And the other which makes me laugh to this day was F(x) Pinnochio. Loved that one so much. “Washin ma sexy windows” Ah never gets old.

my favorite music monday has to be hyuna’s bubble pop. Simon made me laugh on the groung for 10 minutes. everytime i hear the song in the car i hear myself say “this song is 90% thrusting and 10% bubbles i want more bubbles.” everytime i see a bubble i think of kpop music mondays.BTW simon that “guy” is sexy…
“Martina is Martina is UNREASONABLY JEALOUS! OOOHHH OHHHH”simon “OH GOD! AGEYOZILLA! NOT AGAIN! AHH!”
you guys are so obsesive i just cant get enough of your videos…
    lololololololololol.

  15. my favourite kpop music mondays was: GD&TOP Knock Out!!! first of all because I totally love BigBang especially GD and TOP .. and secondly because u made me laugh soo much in that kpop music monday by watching Martina jumping around in the snow because she was soo happy because of the MV! and when u danced to the coreography of the video… Simon couldnt impersonate TOP’s dance better (it was very funny) and Martina looked really cute dancing behing Simon! ^_^

Have you seen the London Boys “Harlem Desire” MV on youtube?  I’m sure it was the inspiration (remake?) for “Itaewon Freedom”.  No matter, both are fantastic!

  18. Lori Chan

my favorite was hyunA bubble pop. this is because it was funny/cute and i LOVE THE SONG! <3~

  19. I loved the video for B1A4!!! I mean… BILASA!

  20. My fave video is keep your head down by TVXQ. I really liked the parody of the rooftop scene it really made me laugh.

  21. My fave video is keep your head down by TVXQ. I really liked the parody of the rooftop scene it really made me laugh.

  22. I’m gonna go ahead and post this even though I want to bet all of my money (which isn’t much considering the fact I am a student) and say you won’t read this and that I entered to late.

I have been a fan of you guys since your first video of you guys in that cafe like 4 hours off of the plane. I loved your video How To Be The Coolest Teacher In Korea. It was so funny and then you did How To Dance K-Pop Style 2009. I still to this day love the shout from DBSK’s Mirotic. So funny. And the “okay” and BigBang’s Lies. When you guys said you students would say this every time they had to apologize I died from laughter. But then you introduced us to the BEST.MUSIC.REVIEW.SYSTEM.EVER also know as K-Pop Music Mondays.

If I absolutely MUST choose a favorite moment it would have to be the dance break down from SHINee’s Lucifer. That’s actually how I learned the dance no kidding. When I watched them do the dance on youtube I got distracted by Taemin’s awesome shirt.

HOWEVER there were some notable contenders. Martina’s Adorable cheer in the blooper real. My cousin taught that to her elementary cheerleading team. So cute. The Spudgy dance from Ugly. No words needed. ALL OF YOUR BIG BANG videos. Yes, even the solo ones from the individual members and the GD&TOP combo. I love how Martina always made sure they won. Its actually her fault that I developed a love for T.O.P. I used the think he was a bit odd but after these videos I find his deep voice and eye brows positively dreamy *swoons* *wakes up hours later wondering why she fainted thinks about TOP and faints again*

My my pardon me. Where was I? Yes contenders. MBLAQ’s Cry. Simon in the water doing those poses HILARIOUS!!!! FT Island’s Hello Hello. Simon and that Mr. Brohohoho. So funny but I almost thought they were in America until you guys pointed that out. They got a goo mix of foreigners. B2ST’s Fiction. BAATOOST. That’s how Simon says it and I actually catch my self saying that. Speaking of which whenever I hear Bonamana I think of Simon saying Boner-rama. Especially when you guys had that finger dance in your WTF video about the finer dye. You did Fiction and the manly sweeping dance. So funny. Park Bom’s Don’t Cry. The many faces of Park Bom. I cried. Seriously.

So there you go. You have my number one as well as my contenders. I feel obnoxious with my post but I probably won’t win anyway so it doesn’t really matter at this point I suppose. Here’s to hope. Hwaiting.

  24. I love all of your videos. They have become a daily reference at home for me. When I turn on or off the light I will say Max Time! Or when I lit the candles on my daughters birthday cake I said Yunho time as I clicked the lighter. When I watch Music mondays and Simon does his huuuuhhhhhhhhhh  (Ayy girl) I laugh so hard I wind up dubbled over. I look forward to every Monday now because of you guys. I will always roll down my sexy window for you! lol

  25. It is nearly impossible to choose a favourite because I love so many for
so many different reasons, but if I had to choose, it would have to be
MBLAQ’s Cry. Even though it wasn’t my first video, it’s the episode that
    got me officially hooked.

Your videos are so addictive and
influential that I can no longer around hearing ‘I’ll be back” without
saying  “I gotta get this makeup off my face” and now whenever I listen
to a B2ST song all I can think of is “Batoost batoost batoost” or “I
can’t take my breath breath breath. I should have brushed…”

    I
absolutely love how you guys transformed the sexy half-naked water
scenes into an ‘umbrella-less condition’ I thought it was so clever and
    funny.
Simon’s under water pictures were hilarious and priceless!

    Your
videos are so true and honest without watering down your opinions! Your
views and twists on things are so creative and wet socks really do
    suck!

I actually discovered you guys before Kpop after watching a
Cpop MV, but thanks to you guys I have something to look forward to 3
times a week and have found my love for Kpop!!

Thanks to you guys, my completely anti-kpop friends are slowly opening up because of your videos which shows them KPop in a fun and innovative way! I am proud to say, my ‘turn off your Kpop now’ sister is now a Big Bang fan after watching your videos!

BTW You guys need a fan club name~!

    Thanks from a fellow Torontonian!

  27. My favorite music monday you have done would have to be when you reviewed “Wanna Be Your Love” by F.CUZ.  This review inspired my friends and I to do a remake of it which you can see here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yOZx7Zhaag.  I also like this review because it is the first music monday I ever saw and I instantly became and eatyourkimchi fan.  It will hold a special place in my heart FOREVER!  Thank you for all the amazing music mondays!  Keep making more please :) Fighting!

  28. LIKE A MAN

my fav kpop music mondays was this one! UV- ITAEWON FREEDOM. i like it because of course it was hilarious, and because it was different from other kpop videos. like you guys said, they rubbed each others faces, thrusting became censored, their hairstyles were craazy. and it was set in the 80’s. they dont try to act cute like other bands too. THEY JUMPED THRU A FIRE HOOP and frog leaped each other. the background of the mv was different than other mv’s. (cardboard) it was like a comedy mv. they had epic dance moves which included freestyling. and they also had fans in their vids. i liked music mondays cuz i never knew these kinds of mv’s existed

  29. Itaewon Freedom is the BEST!!! I don’t know how I’ve survived this long without it…. oh wait, that’s right. TOP! Oh how I love you TOP-oppa…
Where was I? Oh yes, Itaewon Freedom is so much better than Intoxication! Did you see that epic hip thrust? The Michael Jackson crotch-grab? The HAIR?? That was epic.

  30. You guys are really…for lack of a better adjective…awesome. ^^ It’s really hard to decide which video is my favourite. All of them are so funny, and I totally agree with a lot of your reviews! All of your jokes are funny, original, and sometimes…awkward and/or dirrrty. THANK YOU! Mondays are so much better when there’s Kpop Music Mondays. :D

If I had to pick one video…ummmmmm…I’d have to say I loved your video on “Ayyy Girl”. It was hilarious and the music video really was such a fail. The entire video didn’t really have anything to do with the song! The CGI, Junsu’s apron, “Rolling down my sexy windows”, Kanye’s horrible grammar…–there were so many things to make fun of in the video, and you guys did a great job.

Also, you guys always find interesting ways to reinterpret Kpop artists’ dance moves, and my friends and I always find ourselves imitating them.

    Rolling down my sexy windows~~

    Max time!

  32. Haibara Christie

    Sorry for posting twice…

  33. Haibara Christie

Did you guys get some of your background music from Intoxication?

  34. Haibara Christie

    Hey Simon and Martina,
Did you guys get some of your background music from this song?

  35. I honestly loved all of them, because each and every week you post a new videos leads to new things. I watch them just for the enjoyment as well as the english of the video. I have watched other reviews from other people but you make your reviews exciting and ask the viewers to vote for which song they want. Not alot of people/youtubers ask what the viewers want. You guys make monday a wonderful instead of a boring one. You guys make monday worth waiting for :D

  36. Nicole Chavannes

My favorite Kpop Music Monday was probably (not including
your K-Crunch posts) in U-kiss’s Shut Up review when Mordney first
appeared and Simon’s dad was featured :D

If the K-Crunch posts are included, I’d have to say your last
K-Crunch where you displayed a perfect example of the emotionless kisses
    shown in K-Dramas :DDD

And when you talked about how horrible that chick in Heartstrings is, because she really had no redeeming qualities T-T

  37. Maria Baradzina

My favorite Kpop Music Monday was when you reviewed B1A4’s O.K. because inspired by your awesome pronunciation (BILASAAAA!!!) my friends and I went to an Asian style photo booth and did a “BILASAAA” inspired photo. Except we forgot how to actually write the group’s name and after about 15 minutes, we settled on “B1SA”….yeah. We had high hopes of putting it on your fb and making you proud. <.<

My favorite Kpop Music Monday is U-kiss 0330. ;D. This was one of my favorite because this was the one i showed all my friends, and they loved you guys just as much as me. I love this music monday because i actually laughed at simon’s joke about the dial tone. LOL and i have been using it since when my friends try to diss me. muahahahah. and “pie r square” has been me and my friends inside joke during math class. LOL, i hope you keep making more videos they always get me by the day!

  40. Sanjana Rahman

My favorite Kpop Music Monday moment was when you guys did Bubble Pop… I will never look at the mv the same way<3 Love YA!
