Time for this week’s Kpop Chart Update with Spica, M.I.B, and BuskerBusker!

1) Spica “Painkiller”

Spica! You’re back! And I like this song “Painkiller” more than your last song, even though I liked your last song too, I just like this one more. Great vocal range, beautiful chorus, but I just didn’t get the video. This is one of those moments in Kpop where I feel like the producer of a band or director of a music video is shining through much more then the actual band. We had the same complaint for Hyuna’s role in “Troublemaker” where we felt like the director was intentionally making her to be a mere sex icon over an actual dancer or singer (although, it seems some viewers of that review felt that we were talking about Kim Hyuna as the actual person, which was not the case since we always judge the final stage product of every kpop band, not the actual individual). For Spica’s case, I felt like from the set to the costumes were being pushed to have a “cool” and “trendy” image but it just had NO connection to the sound or meaning of the song. The gangster look + mismatched sparkle pants and tops + cornrows + chunky jewellery + sunglasses at night + random leather gloves + spray paint + dangerous alley + security cam + police tape = WTF is this trying to say? Normally those kind of images match well with either a hip hop song or concepts such as social rebellion (check out B.A.P “Warrior”, 2NE1 “Ugly”, Taeyang “Where U At”…) but a really pretty R&B style ballad with a haunting piano hook about missing your ex-lover desperately deserves a much better music video than this.

2) M.I.B. “Celebrate”

Here comes the Men In Black, they won’t let you remember, CLAP CLAP! Alright so it’s not Men In Black but I will never be able to tear that association away from my mind. M.I.B is back with their newest single “Celebrate” which has us feeling kinda torn. It’s not like it’s a terrible song, we just feel like the rap parts were great and then the singing is totally mismatched and way too gentle. I know Simon specifically really hates when a song has either a random rap that doesn’t fit or a random R&B “OOOOoooooOOOoooHHHhhhhhh” section that doesn’t match the song’s aggressiveness. A mixed bag of sound is happening in this song. Besides the song, the video is a bit…odd…but I guess some people just celebrate differently. Some people celebrate by having a party with great food and drinks, and some people celebrate by hiring a girl they can toss colourful powder and glitter at and then have a glow-in-the-dark paint fight in a pitch black room. Each to their own.

3) Busker Busker “Cherry Blossom Ending”

OOoooOOoOOh foreigner! Had to let that out. Yes, Brad is the foreigner who plays drums in BuskerBusker and although I’ve seen people of every nationality play drums, it’s somehow exciting to see Brad frolic on the screen with his Korean bandmates. After reading over what I just wrote, I realize I’ve been in Korea for too long. 0______o Anyhoo, BuskerBusker is doing great since their appearance on Superstar K3 and that’s so great to see! It’s nice to see an Indie band be recognized by the general public and have the chance to gain sponsors and actually make a decent living off their musical talent. Even though we don’t have time (or cable) to watch TV shows like Superstar K3 or American Idol (and the list goes on) I really like the concept of giving incredibly talented singers or bands the chance to make it big. Yes I know, corporations make lots of money off these shows, blah blah blah, but it doesn’t take away from the chance of a lifetime these people are getting, so who cares! BuskerBusker has a lovely attitude and a lighthearted happy feel that you can feel from their songs and their music videos. This song is just so sway inducing and it’ll have you bobbing in your chair. I love the lead singers deep voice and then slow swooping high notes. The band looks genuinely cute and happy in this video, and while at first, I thought I was going to hate the videos plot from the beginning, the ending had a nice surprise that made me like them even more. YAY! Check our Cherry Blossom Ending with it’s cute animations and peppy lighthearted song.

  1. It’s averaged out over time as well as the number of votes. For example, Band A gets 5 thousand votes and has been out for 10 days. Band A averages 500 votes per day. Band B gets 3 thousand votes but their song has been out for only 5 days. Band B averages 600 votes per day. Therefore, Band B is higher on the KpopChart than Band A.

    Makes sense?

  2. I must say that “celebrate” really manages to rock the fetish style (while not crossing any obvious boundries) with the “cleavage and Gas mask” look that girl has.

  4. so I was just wondering, I know its exo time and all, but since i’ve seen no one ask about it, I’ll ask anyway. what happened to MissA’s Touch? becoz of bigbang they couldn’t reach first for some weeks, but then the vid totally disappeared from the kpop chart. Not that I think it stands a chance right now, but just wanted to know why it isn’t there anymore..
