1) Shinhwa “Venus”Vote for them here!

I’m kinda worried about what we said here for Shinhwa. See, back when we started Kpop Music Mondays, we talked about a lot of bands that we weren’t really familiar with. As time passed we got to know them more, understand them better, and kind of get to appreciate the inside culture of their fandoms. We’re more comfortable now with our Music Mondays than we were back when we started. Talking about Shinhwa today kinda brings us back to those first few reviews, when we still felt new. Shinhwa doesn’t really mean anything to us. We know they’re legendary, and that they mean a lot to other people, but they are before our time, and so they don’t really resonate with us. Sure, they resonate with lots of other people, but they don’t really seem to resonate with our KpopCharts audience, either. No servers are crashing for them. No votes are getting flooded. And so, they’re not having as big an impact as we thought they might, but we’re not surprised.

Long story short, we can only talk about Shinhwa based on the song we heard today…which is alright. Nothing really that takes us by storm. And the video is of confident men rather than of growing boys…so…yeah. Decent song, we guess!

2) CNBlue “Hey You”Vote for them here!

Last week we talked about CNBlue and couldn’t really say much about their video, which was cool for being artistically shot, but not something to really talk about. This video is much more up our alley! So many white people! Wow! Seriously: how did they get on set for that? What company do they work for? I’m hoping that one of you reads our blog and can answer this question for us. Come on! Don’t be shy! And – you potential trolls – don’t use this as an opportunity to pretend you were there just to lead us on. PICS OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!

3) BtoB “Insane”- Vote for them here!

BATOOBA

BATOOBA

BAOOTBA

BATOOBA

Kpop: stop making ridiculous names. Seriously. This is such a bizarre WTF name that I can’t even concentrate on anything else apart from my sheer confusion for stupid names. It’s like you eat alphabet soup and poop out band names. Stop it already.

Well, from the three songs in this update I still remember and listen regularly only to SHINHWA’s Venus, it’s just so addictive! Even if I was like ” I like this song too” when it came to the other two, it just didn’t stuck. Plus, no youngster can beat the sexiness of these men!

  2. This video kind of made me sad :/ And I’m so glad I’ve seen it now because I would cry if I saw it during their comeback last year. I’m 18. I’m not a noona with kids. But I still love this band so so so much. And I’m sure other Changjos would agree with me when I say that I have no interest in voting for them anywhere, especially not on eatyourkimchi site. Both Shinhwa and SHCJ have matured to the point where this little things don’t really mean much to us. If the members aren’t concerned with it, why should I, as their fan, be? And they’re so relevant today. You wouldn’t believe how people react (even here in Croatia) when you tell them it’s Shinhwa. Everyone has so much respect for them and it should stay that way. And Andy (Shinhwa’s maknae) could be watching your show… :/ Don’t make them mad…. Please xD I hope to see more positive opinions from you about their comeback in March~ ^^
    Pozdrav iz Hrvatske :D

  3. Animefilledsoul

BTOB is not a stupid naaaammmmeeeee!!!!!! its cool cause it stands for “born to beat”!!!!!! have your own thoughts Simon but I think its awesome!!!!1

  4. actually if you look really close at this video there is hidden Illuminati pictures. I know lots of people night not believe that it’s in kpop and i have a hard time believing it’s in all kpop but if you look and focus on the music video. in the centre of the video know and then you will see lyrics being spelt and then you will see a picture flash in. you have to really watch the video closey. you see lots of symbols that pop up. if you don’t believe me go watch the mv. don’t get me wrong i love there music and bought there cd i just think its weird that they would do that and you don’t notice it until you really look

  5. LMAO yeah, completely agree on the names thing

  6. Amy Kim

I know this is much later than all of the other posts, but I just felt like I needed to say this: Shinhwa fans can be REALLY scary; I would never want to say something relatively negative about Shinhwa in front of anyone now. (Peer pressure, anyone?) :(

  7. otakusj

I like Venus really. and I’m happy for them and they are so hilarious. They are even funnier than sj,.and to think i’m a cassie..^_^
    Shinhwa jjang!

  8. haha i totally relate to the whole poop-like group’s names espicially this year it looks like the year of who can have the worst name and the competition is heating up from BAP to NE’ST nd now BTOP who i found the meaning of it recently “born to beat”!!! could this get any worse!!

  9. Sei Satou

BATOOBA…i dont like the sound of that…i find their name weird too…

  10. Whoa, whoa. What’s with all the mean comments, all of a sudden? Like, the first ten are (respectfully and not) telling M&S that they don’t know what they’re talking about. Shinhwa are awesome and talented, yes. But they’re right. They’re older. It makes sense for them to have an older fanbase. That doesn’t mean you can’t like them as a younger viewer. Hell, look at Bi/Rain and Leeteuk. They’re both ten years older than I am, but I’d come running in a heartbeat. They’re also promoted more overseas (my country), and more currently.

Today’s popular image is that of the Flower Boy. SHINee and SuJu both have that image and they are the more currently popular. I’m not saying Shinhwa doesn’t have a large fanbase, but here’s the three types of people I run into most who like them:

Old fans, who were fans back when they were mid-career.

K-Pop obsessives, who know most bands since 1980.

K-Pop hipsters. “Oh, you listen to SHINee? They’re cool, I guess. My favorite’s Shinhwa. They’re kind of the original, you know? But, I mean, SHINee’s ok too.”

It’s like the Rolling Stones. Sure, they have younger fans. But the majority (not whole of, but majority) of people at all their comeback concerts will be the three groups I stated above.

TL; DR -  In a foreign audience, what’s current is what’s most  popular. Current is not Shinhwa, even though they have talent.

  11. miss111

I don’t really agree with the whole venus/penis thing. I know that they rhyme but as the song is called “Venus” I’m going to take it for granted that they are saying that. Plus, although some Koreans may have a problem pronouncing that word, Shinhwa clearly have the whole “not accidentally saying penis” thing in the bag.

  12. Farah Afiza

BATOB! That’s what I call them XD

    I like the song though.

  13. Venus really is quite catchy, thank you for the update!
Hope they will win for next Monday.

I have a QUESTION im very curious about, seeing the last update with lollipop from big bang made me wonder: is it possible to submit songs which don’t have a music video??? Maybe people could provide a youtube live performance when submitting these songs, would this be a possible way to open up for exceptional good songs without mv?
Hope im not one of numerous people asking the same question. If am I feel very sorry.

Just to name a few songs which I consider as really creative and catchy, without having a real MV:
    Shinee – Lollipop  ~1,2,3 Naked!
Big Bang – What is right, what is wrong
Super Junior – Solo (only a drama intro/video)

Ahh, hope it is ok posting this. You guys are great, Happy Easter!! =)

  14. yongseo_lover

Hi I’m not a shinhwa fan but I respect them as artists. They seem really dedicated to their fans since from what I heard they did not comeback to win awards or things like that but to keep the promises they made to their fans.As much as I disagree with Simon and Martina’s opinion, I’ve come to terms that we have to agree to disagree. It is true, you guys are just two  foreign kpop lovers living in korea making videos on youtube and your opinion is just that …an opinion. I do think however that it would really be useful for you guys to do a quick research for the kgroups you review/talk about just to know them in general (you might learn to love a new group perhaps :)?) and also for this kind of thing to  not happen again, you know, misunderstandings and all.
To be honest,  I do find your videos enjoyable, this was the only video I’ve ever disliked of you guys but I’m still a fan of EYK. People do mistakes in wording their opinions and people do mistakes in understanding those said opinions .In the end, we are only human  that have many similarity but just as much differences. We like what we like and dislike what we don’t,it’s as easy as that. I can see why people were offended and I know why you got defensive in regards of some comments. In my opinion, you guys (s&m and everyone else) should learn to admit your faults and just well, get over it.

S & M , you should read this article. It’s very interesting and It’s about Shinhwa’ s career and comeback.
I read in one of your reply’s that you don’t want to know anything about Shinhwa because of this but even if you ”dislike” them, you should at least understand their whole career process to understand the hearts of these fans. In the end,There is a bit of true and reason on both sides :)
My opinion on this is mainly neutral but I think S & M should at
least explain in a video or in a post their opinion on the whole
‘controversy’. I’d  love to have some insight and at the same time it
might give closure to those who have been hurt by this (I’m sure it
wasn’t made in purpose) but if you don’t I guess it’s understandable.
You all (s& m  and everyone else)need to learn to forgive  and put
down your pride a little. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean forgetting
their actions but at least it shows how mature you can be towards a
    situation :) .

  15. S&M i agree with all that u said about SHINHWA
    it was so true !!
and I can’t look at BTOB anymore without saying BATOOBA BATOOBA!!!!!!
i love you guize i am huge fan of your site and watch all of your videos
    and agree 97% with u
i wait every monday for ur videos
    and the kcrunch too
you are like the friends i never had in my kpop fangirling world
you are the sound of reason that brings me back to reality and voice my doubts and critic about all kpop groups and songs and mvs
that voice that i sometimes ignore for my bias
you rock and i beleive in you
like your ideas and critics ..always on point !!!!
    eatyourkimchi figting

  16. cnblue is the best kpop band
without the dancing routines and robotic moves
they are the freestyle of what kpop would be if it decided to freestyle! lol
    cnblue so cool so charming
should listen to in my head solely composed by yonghwa and the japanese single where you are also composed by yonghwa
that is the true sound of cnblue and the future sound hopefully

  17. there is a lot of white people in hey you cnblue mv cuz it is shooted abroad
and cnblue has future plans to conquer the american billboard as number 1 !!! ^^
also bigbang’s bad boy had white girls in it so what ?!
in this mv they are dancing cheerfuly to the cheerful song
not intended to make them look dorky …
or saying that is how cnblue/fnc/asians view white people

  18. RandomSardines

The white people in CN Blue’s recent MV ‘Hey You’ are actually random exchange? students who didn’t even know who they were xD

  19. SWalkerTTU

“Eat alphabet soup and poop out band names” — would sticking random letters on the wall and tossing darts at them be any better?

  20. lol the commentary for the cnblue video entertained me, a lot of those people in their video were exchange students and apparently a lot of them didn’t know who cnblue was and thought that they were just more models(how did they not notice that cnblue seemed to be the only koreans on set though??), cnblue and ft island are both part of FNC entertainment(i think they changed their ending from music to entertainment…they had an article somewhere about that)
the info should be correct….but i read this a while back…aka closer to when the video came out over a week ago so i could have messed up in my reciting of info personally i’m leaving the shinwha thing for other people to talk about, since i haven’t listened to most groups and i don’t feel like getting into more groups, i’d have issues keeping up with variety shows and go insane

  21. nelicia low

oh man, simon and martina i feel so dam horrible for you guys! all the hate is just so terrible!!! cheer up and keep your chins up!

i can see where these fans are coming from and i can see where you guys are coming from too. i guess the problem here is that you guys are kinda celebrities now (with all the responsibilities of idols!!! :O RUN) so your fans may think you guys need be to these role models and give role-model-esque answers, not unlike the idols we know and love lol. double-edged sword innit :(

personally i think everyone needs to calm down… the only thing i know about shinhwa is that their group has the most brotherhood amongst all the groups out there, and if there was one thing i’d love it would be for simon and martina to talk about them staying together for so effing long, major respect for that. i mean look at all the recent groups trying or succeeding in spiltting up?

but we can’t forget that simon and martina are people with their own opinions. they are not supposed to please anyone (unlike these idols we wrongly try to fit into our fantasy worlds) and can say whatever the hell they want!

looking forward to more videos guise, again, keep your heads up (not down!)… xoxo

  22. ……ummm i honestly dont get what the big deal is. Its just two peoples opinion. That is it, That is all. How people see this as offensive is beyond me. They have nothing to say, they dont know them or their music.

*sigh* Apparently, Simon and Martina, you’re opinions can alter the course of reality, torment fans and destroy kpop groups. -.-

  23. Sara Eden

I once read somewhere that you should never read the “comments” section of the media you watch on internet because that is where people go to forget their manners and just say whatever they want, unfiltered.

I made the grave mistake of looking through the comment section on this post. Oh my! Who knew people get so worked up over a difference of opinion on MUSIC? Seriously.. it’s a band, people, not reproductive rights.

Simon and Martina, you guys still rock. Haters gonna hate. Your true fans love you – and respect your opinions even if they are different from our own.

  24. Its ok Simon and Martina!!! you say whatever you want! i think everyone is entitled to their own opinions:) i love your glasses Martina:)

  25. Funny that you mentioned Sunday Morning… I’m not into Maroon 5 or American music at all, but I actually first heard this song when I heard it played and sang by CN Blue’s Jonghyun on some music program……….. it really hit me and I started to mumble it during dishwashing, lol. Funny, I don’t get if that’s the coincidence or not, but it’s funny :)

  26. im not being bias but everything they do reminds me of b2st, they all look like bad version of b2st members, theyre dressed like b2st and this song sounds like it was written for b2st which it most likely was

  27. Kate Vonnegut

    PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE
can you do “a boy” by gd?! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!

  28. can anyone tell me what the random images that are showing up in 2:55-3 something? (in Venus)
sometimes it’s obviously letters and at other times i see a face ?
    why? :/

    • The first word is Venus, the title of the MV. I guess the random image pop up is the face of venus. The rest of them means: “Shinhwa Changjo forever”. It’s the name of their fanclub, also it means in Korean as “To create a legend”. They put in that hidden message as a thank you message to their loyal fans.

  29. Simon and Martina, I know kpop fans can be pretty protective of their groups. You guys have made fun of suju several times and I and other ELFs were totally fine about it. Even so, I would feel a bit offended if they made a comeback after years of not being together and they received those comments. Same with HOT.

I think most fans are upset bc it didnt seem you guys did any research prior to this. Saying their irrelevant is a bit much, especially with the big positive feedback they had in Korea. Im not a big fan of Shinhwa, Im more into HOT and Click B, but Shinhwa is absolutely relevant. All the idol groups are looking to them and their learning that going into the military does not necessarily mean the end of their group. Leeteuk from suju even said that he hopes his group will do the same.

Some of these comments were way overboard, but generally, pll are voicing their opinion to tell u their not relevant and that they do have fans. Plus, why people are so angry is because Shinhwa are seniors and they have been in the industry for a long time, therefore there is a level of respect towards them. It’s like if I was to say Elton John in irrelevant. Expect to get bashed.

    • …There was nothing wrong with what they said. Elton John, to the general audience now, just like Shinhwa is not relevant. If he does come out with anything now its for a target audience, the fact that hes a legend doesnt guarantee success when times are changing and music is evolving. Its the same with Shinhwa. Their target audience is the audience that has grown with them and loved them but to the youth of today no they are not relevant.

  30. Lizzylilly101

And while everybody is going on some kind of full-on debate on Shinhwa, all I can think of is

    BATOOBA
    BATOOBA
    BATOOBA
    XD

  31. It’s funny how a lot of people say that S and M are being disrespectful to Shinhwa but they themselves make comments that are super disrespectful to S and M as well. BE STRONG GUISE!

  32. Why do I have the feeling that all the “fight back” comments are wrote by Simon and the cute comments are by Martina? Am I right? lol

  33. I think people are mostly upset with the “it’s just not right” comment. It just gives a wrong vibe. It was like you were saying that they shouldn’t have came back cause they’re too old, and just should have stayed in the past. That was the comment that unsettled me the most too, by the way. I was perfectly fine with everything else. :)

    My sister and I’ve been Shinhwa’s fans since 2003, and we’re only 19 ^o^
I’ve been patiently waiting for their comback since 2008, and I’m so glad that they’ve kept their promise to us! They are one special group that always stay true to each other and never goes back on their promises to their fans!! I just love the strong connection Shinhwa and Shinhwa Changjos share and am proud to be a part of that!

Once you get to learn more about them, you’ll get to love them too eventually! They’re the most craziest group of boys(men if you want!) that I’ve ever seen!! The members are so dorky, and they haven’t lost their charm still! :p

  34. Woah. People need to calm themselves. This is the internet. Writing your dissertations on why Simon and Martina are offensive to you because you cannot accept how they talk about your favorite group is silly. Getting upset about what people say on the internet is the silliest thing. Personally I agree/disagree with S&M. I don’t really know Shinhwa’s history, but I understand they helped shape the kpop landscape. It’s like the BSB comeback for those familiar. When I was 10 I was obsessed, but when they came back on the radar a few years ago I wasn’t really interested, in fact it felt kind of weird to see them and hear them together because that image of the BSB when I was young is what is imprinted in my mind, not them 10 years later and 10 years older. By no means are they unattractive or too old for the business, it’s just a weird experience. Watching the Shinhwa video it was weird at first because they are older than the average kpop idol, and that by no means diminishes their talent or appeal, but it was strange to see mature kpop idols portrayed in a manner that is similar (by no means the same) in comparison to current idol groups. Personally I happen to LOVE the song and plan on following Shinhwa casually as their promotions continue, but they didn’t blow S&M away. If they didn’t blow me away I’d acknowledge who they are, but not really spend time sucking up to Shinhwa fans.

Regardless, welcome to the internet where not everybody likes the same things you do!

    • I feel that the internet is very much like real life, just an amplified version. Behind the screen there are still real people with real feelings.

      • The internet is much, much worse as far as irrational reactions to differing opinions goes. It’s the anonymity.

        • I don’t want to butt in and I don’t really care about the different opinions about Shinwha. Nevertheless, I just wanted to say that the Internet forgets NOTHING and anonymity – I would not bet on that. =/
Real life often seems to get forgotten faster.

  35. Sonia Singh

I wasn’t around when Shinhwa was relevant, and I didn’t learn about them until couple of months ago, but I love them boys. I am not a die-heart fan (A proud JAYWALKER!), but they are my favorite band after 2ne1 and Big Bang. In fact, I think I like them just as much as I like Big Bang.

I do not condone some of the harsh comments people have left for you guys, but I do think some of the hate was born out of how you guys expressed yourself in the video. I understand that you do not know about Shinhwa and it’s unfair for us to expect you to like them, but you could have been a little more sensitive with your words. Then again, it’s your blog and it’s your choice how your express yourself, so I guess we don’t have the right you tell you what you should and should not say. I just wanted to say that as much as the die-hard fans are over-reacting, the video itself is also a little harsh.

Besides, as many have already pointed out, Shihwa’s fan base is different from other fan bases so I would not count just votes and youtube views as indication of their popularity.

  36. OreoBites

It’s not worth my time to vote for ShinHwa in this blog. ShinHwa doesn’t need crappy reviews from these ignorant bloggers. ShinHwa Changjo are a bunch of nice people. We help new ShinHwa fans with songs recommendations, variety shows etc…

S&M aren’t getting this fandom because 1st ShinHwa was not around when they got into KPOP. It’s understandable. It’s ok even if they dissed ShinHwa saying they’re irrelevant to the current music scene because S&M know nothing about the rise of KPOP, the corruptions, the hurtful journey of KPOP idols. ShinHwa is Legendary because they’ve went through all that and survive the curse, the backstabbing, the awards corruption and more.

They’re sending message to all idols groups out there to never give up hope and stand for your rights. There’s nothing wrong in making fun of idol groups and it’s fine if you want to make fun of ShinHwa but what makes this review hurt is that no matter how hard we Changjos tried to explain and recommend S&M ShinHwa’s material, they just brush it off and playing the dumb foreigners mindset saying, “We didn’t know.” (look at the way they reply to their so-called “butt-hurt” fans comments)

We’re not saying you have to bow down to ShinHwa like OMG! they’re gods! No. It’s ok to not like their songs either. Different people different mindsets & opinions and that’s OK! It’s just that in KPOP you should respect the ones who pave the way for these current/future idols. Your idols are standing on stage today because of their dreams of becoming like ShinHwa. I don’t have to list names.

The word reunite has been wrongly associated with ShinHwa. They didn’t disband. ShinHwa simply making their comeback as any other singers or idols. They stand as one and leave as one. They don’t simply promote ShinHwa with 2 or 3 members just to maintain their popularity. They promote as ShinHwa because of their fans. They always fulfill their promise no matter if it’s a promise to have a full concert in Singapore or promise to comeback after serving their country. They’ve always fulfilled these promises.

This comeback is not based on popularity and money but simply to return to their fans.

  37. shbeckles

I just don’t understand… many of you Changjos are claiming, “Oh, our fanbase as a whole is older and more mature, we don’t have time to do all the ridiculous things fans of younger groups do”… but how mature is it exactly to pounce on  and rant away to people for sharing their opinions and liking different music than you and not knowing your fanclub name and …God forbid, making a penis joke?! I don’t know about the rest of you, but those who aren’t amused by a well-placed penis joke are just a bit too srs business (I’m so serious, yeah!) for me.

    • Sweta Khanal

I personally think that the things you have pointed out are things that the fans are least concerned about. It’s this part that was upsetting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMpj4Dgbaco&t=1m24s. They sound very dismissive of Shinhwa’s comeback and that’s what angered the fans. Again, I am neither a die-hard Shinhwa fan, nor do I condone the many harsh comments people have left, but I do think people had the right to be upset over this video.

  38. I really wasn’t that interested in Shinhwa’s comeback to tell the truth, but after watching their mv and live performance i was like MIND BLOWN! I was like WHOA! These 30 year old guys are GOOD! And now I have Venus on replay! Now I’m not saying that I’m a Changjo, but I can see why they are kpop legends!!! As a VIP, i hope that BigBang lasts as long as they did, and i hope that Shinhwa can set an example to all the other groups, to not break up!!! (I’m currently watching Shut Up Flower Boy Band so I’m a bit emotional on the topic of boy bands breaking up :P)

  39. Sorry to go off topic like this, but…

    popdust(.)com/pop-off/
Haters are hating on Kpop again!! Show them our strenght!! Vote for Wonder Girls here, and let the world know the power of the Kpop Family!!!
    WG FIGHTIIING!!

  40. S&M, I’m reading through your replies, and I think you’re taking this whole thing the wrong way…  Many disappointed people are normal fans of EYK and not part of Shinhwa fanbase (including myself, I never knew them before, but I felt disappointed anyway)…
For sure, many comments were rude (as in many other videos), but I found the majority of them to be well written. I also understand why you’re getting defensive and bitter, …. I just want to suggest that you try to separate hateful comments from the honest ones (there are many of them) and see why this happened.
This kind of massive reaction doesn’t come from one fandom alone.
I think there were problems in your review and also in your reaction to critics. I don’t want you to brush off this issue just like another fandom rage. I feel like you are closing off yourselves from any fault right now.
It seems like every disagreeing comment you get, gets flagged as a “butthurt fan” now. It is not the case. Don’t forget the many positive and lovely comments you get usually on your video from your fans. Those are maybe the same ones voicing their disappointment this time. I don’t want you to be happy with your fans just when they are praising you. I do think there are many valid points that were raised by people in this issue and I feel like you are completely shutting down to them and you refuse to hear them.

I hope my comment won’t upset you, because I really love you, I always watch your videos and they always cheer me up. I feel like you are my friends. I’m writing this because I’m feeling a little upset myself about this.
Be strong and continue to make nice videos. I’m looking forward to them.

    • Hiya!

Thanks for the nice comment.  Really.  We’re thankful for all of the positive comments, and do take the time to respond to them and to thank people for them as well, as you will see many times in this thread, no?  But we’re also taking the time to respond to negative comments strongly, which is something we don’t usually do.  This doesn’t mean that we’ve stopped valuing the positive comments, though!

      • Thanks, I’m glad I did not upset you. ^_^
It’s ok to respond strongly, but don’t get too agressive in your replies, ok? ^_^
I’m looking forward to your next videos, especially WANK, my favourite segment. Bye~♪

  41. Just to add my two cents ^^:

I was also disappointed with the opinion of Simon and Martina, I hoped they’d as excited as I was for this return but no…. and it’s alright ! You guys have your own opinion (I almost always agree with you^^) so I wasn’t offended or anything.

The first time I heard Venus I was a bit surprised, the chorus I thought was a little weird (my loooooove ….Venus), that the Venus bit was a bit off but it grew on me and I can’t stop listening to it and mimicking (or trying to) the choregraphy (and looking ridiculous while doing it).

I do believe that Shinhwa is more than just music. While I do love their music, I discovered the boys with Xman and their amazing personalities. They are incredibly funny. I suggest you watch Win Win with Shinhwa or the Shinhwa Broadcast, it may help understand a bit the history of Shinhwa (debut, success, though times…).

While Shinhwa was popular (and still is), it was honestly never as big as g.o.d or h.o.t (they debuted before and were a revolution for SK) but unlike all the other groups, Shinhwa stuck together even after they “separated” with the army or solo activities, they always promised they would come back as a group. And after 14 years, they are still together.

They are all signed under different companies (some even have their own!) so in order to do their group activities, they created a company (Shinhwa Company) and each brought in an equal amount of money, all that just to keep their promise to their fans and come back as a group. They are not nearly as young as the new groups out there, they don’t have the same stamina (Hyesung and Andy got injured during this come-back) and their dance can’t be as impressive as it used to be but it’s still awesome.

Instead of fighting with them over something so trivial (they weren’t even that harsh!), let’s vote for Shinhwa and try to make them win the kpop charts :)

    —–

If you don’t want to read all of this, a little recap: song is great, the guys are awesome and Simon and Martina are entitled to their own opinions. Let’s vote for Shinhwa – Venus !

  42. I actually like this piece.  SHINWA may be a legend but for those of us new to KPOP, we can only base our opinion of SHINWA on what they have shown us recently.  As for myself, since there have been news that the legend SHINWA was making a comeback, I was quite open to see what they have in store.  I was also not pleased because the material is pretty much what I see everyday in the kpop sphere.  Not to say it’s bad.  It’s just that it did not stand out (not with me and not with the general present-day kpop community) which explains why it did not create a buzz the way SHINEE and EXO are getting. I think that is the same opinion held by Simon and Martina so why should it be wrong and all of you who have known SHINWA forever be right?

If you think differently, speak out but don’t be disrespectful… and don’t attack the people who gave opinions.  Not everyone thinks the same.

  43. Yes ZackEager is young.  He’s an opinionated little fuck and so am I.  We agree to disagree.  Every band listed in this argument, I am probably old enough to be everyone’s mom.  But I digress,  I love Kpop and I love to perv on Kpop,  Jailbait, 20′s, 30′s.. it’s all good.   Never heard Shinhwa sing til this video and yes I did like it.  Then again, Ren from NU’EST gets my motor running too…. :P
BTW, I am 47  Old enough to know better and old enough not to give a shit….
    /keeponperving

  44. ZackEager

I love how all these people defending Shinhwa have enough time to leave big elaborate comments, but don’t have time to click a button to vote…GUESS WHAT… OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES, WE ALL HAVE ONE! btw Venus was good for the *man*band. lol…

    • ZackEager

One of them even threw out their knee at their showcase, if that isn’t a sign of being old I don’t know what is…

      • ehhh… it was old contusion that was back.
hm. one of super junior’s boys threw out his knee during some kind of tv programme, is he old then too? :]

        • ZackEager

Do you know how old the oldest member is in Super Junior? Yes they are getting old too. It happens. Also, I was pointing out something I thought was just ironic and would normally show a sign of oldness IE. throwing out your back, hip, knee, etc… God catch on >_>

        • you must be really young then if you think that people in their early 30s are old.
most of SHINHWA members are my age… should I go shopping for coffin then :p

      • Grace Hong

not denying that they’re slowly getting old, but for the record, hyesung has always had a bad knee. a similar accident happened in 2001, when he was 22. and he was formally exempt from the army due to his knee.

      •  Do you see Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones stopping?  NOW THAT’S OLD.
heh…. Keep on rocking with your bad selves there Shinhwa…

  45. Some people really need to grow up. What the hell is with all this bashing and bad comments? It’s just a video about THEIR opinion on this song. If you disagree with them, this is it. Everyone has different opinions, you can’t kill people for what they think. From what I see they didn’t bash Shinhwa, neither did they say harmful things about them…They just said what they thought while being funny as always. This is why I think they are awesome, because they say what they think about songs and stuff even  if it’s a positive or negative thing. They are honest and this is the most important thing.
If you think their opinion is wrong, if you hate them or whatever why do you even spend your time commenting? This doesn’t make sense.Oh and I almost forgot, they made fun of Big Bang, they made fun of Shinee, SJ (And by the way I’m an ELF and I won’t get angry if they said sth. negative about them because, as I said it’s just their opinion and it won’t change my love for the group)  and so many other groups so your comment is invalid :P Simon, Martina, Spudgy, thanks for making awesome videos all the time. I respect you and I love your videos! You always make me laugh even if I’m not in a good mood. Don’t let these comments affect you and your work, because some people are just stupid. Go on and make honest videos like this! Love you, guys!

  46. Even I do not agree with some words spoken by Simon and Martina, I still respect their opinion. We all have different point of view and the diversity makes life become more interesting. I do not expect everybody has the same feeling as me, for what I feel when Shinhwa makes their comeback. They are coming back, for me, it made my day. So we should put all the drama aside and just enjoy their music, don’t take everything to heart.

I think all the 6 members of Shinhwa are aware of how their fans are feeling, because before they went in hiatus in 2008 due to military service, they gave their fan a goodbye concert, and the CF of their concert reflected their thoughts. You can check out the CF here. Personally, I love that CF, it showed even if their fans grew older, have other interest, Shinhwa was, be, and will take  a special place in their heart. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qasA7yByU4A). The background music for the CF is “Throw my fist”, one of their hits.

Instead of blaming Simon and Martina, I think it will be better if we can show this wonderful couple about Shinhwa rather than just throw words to fly all over the place. Dear Simon and Martina, if you are new with Shinhwa, one of the song I can recommend to listen to is “Once in a lifetime” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-OhegVtbaQ). If you see the MV, you can actually spot UEE of After School before her debut ^____^~. Or, you can check out “Brand new”, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR46mwxCanY), another hit of them, which the MV and the dance has some similarity to their new song “Venus”.

I wish both of you all the best. Love

  47. Emma Johnson

All they said was they didn’t know if Shinhwa was still popular enough to comeback, and they even admitted they might be wrong.

It’s like Madonna, a legend in her own time, but her new album flopped because she is not that popular with the younger generation. Simon and Martina just said that the same thing MIGHT happen to Shinhwa.

Anyway, about the Cn Blue thing, I think it is possible that they filmed it in L.A. while they were there for their concert.

  48. Panisa Mahadej

I’m not sure what to say but… I love you Guise. I wait for Tuesday every week to see you k-pop music Monday. (and WANKing, of course) and I’m feel awful to see many discourage comments about this week video. But I gotta say We all can make mistake. You done yourselves this time. I agree with some comment below such as you video is not fun as it used to be. (which i ask myself why too. In some older video, I laughed my side-sore) and Please do some research next time (which i know you do and just tried to be funny). For the sexual related jokes, I don’t know since i’m Asian and not Korean. Sometime is funny and sometime is just plain dead. Maybe reconsider your script more.

The reason I started to follow your blog is you dare to make fun of K-pop Band. That’s right. In my country, we love K-pop in younger generation. it expand their fan base more and more, which I find disturbing at that time I just new to K-pop and saw many Thai artist follow K-pop footstep. Enough story about me. One day I tried to find some M/V to watch and I found you Guise. and Boy, I love it ! How you make fun of K-pop M/V that is what I’m looking for to see other side of it that fan girl won’t approve. (So keep making fun of them even it have to be BigBang or VIP)

Thanks for being part of my life that introduce me to Korean culture, music and many more.

Please Don’t feel bad about other comment so much, refresh yourselves and  keep on making good quality video. ^U^

P.S. Sorry for my Simon-Won’t-Approve English. I haven’t use it properly for long time….

  49. Hi Simon & Martina,
yeah, i don’t know anything about Shinhwa either, other than that they sounded very familiar and were suppose to be a very big group when I was younger. And yeah, i agree, they are really the “man-band” now, compared to the innumerous boybands that sprouting up like crazy with their flower boys (and wedding bouquet what nots!). But that generation gap aside, i must say their comeback with Venus is still cool. Given that they have been away (for more than a couple of years?), I really dun expect them to return crashing servers like before. But their performance of Venus is still unmistakably that of the pros on stage to me. Welcome back, Shinhwa! Storm up Kpop again!

  50. Firstly, you guys are the fans and this is Simon and Martina’s blog. You don’t have the right to say anything about their opinion, you can only disagree. They were totally respectful while giving their opinion. And really, their opinion wasn’t even harsh. They said they don’t know them so they are just like any other band to them. Since they don’t know them, they have to judge them based on their talent and not their legendary status. Venus didn’t leave an impression on them which is fine. I like Venus a lot personally, regardless of the fact that the group is a legend or not. This is how you should judge a song/video.You need to put aside fandoms and judge songs and videos objectively. Simon and Martina are very good about putting aside the fandoms and being object, judging songs/videos by how good they are rather then how popular groups are even when it comes to bands they love. And honestly that’s what you all should do. I frowned a little when Simon and Martina called them old, but it’s all in good fun it’s not like they were being malicious and saying “your too old, go away”. It’s a fact that they are older compared to other boy bands but I like this about them. If you don’t like what they have to say, just leave.

Secondly, I’m 20. I’m young. I think it’s a fact that us EYKs are of the younger generation and therefore we don’t know much about Shinhwa. They didn’t crash the site, but they did make it to the number 3 spot even when their not well known to some of us, so I think that shows talent. (Which Simon and Martina NEVER implied that they don’t have talent.)

And to all of you telling Simon and Martina they’re harsh in their video, it’s called humor. You have to find things to make fun of and it’s all in good fun. Simon and Martina are not malicious people, unlike some of you guys trying to make them feel shitty over nothing. I thought the “Venus” “penis” thing was hilarious and if you didn’t find it funny that’s fine, but if your gonna be malicious no one ever said you had to watch these videos. We don’t want you here.

Simon and Martina, you guys are great. I think what you do is awesome. It’s thanks to you guys that I discovered my love for k-pop. You guys have introduced me to so much awesome music, you keep me updated, make me laugh hysterically, and give me an outlet for k-pop loving all the way here in America where I have basically no k-pop loving friends. Being famous has it’s up and downs but don’t ever let it get you too down, because you’ll always have people who support you not matter what. Stay strong <3 hwaiting! Your my luv uh! uh! uh! uh! uh! uh! Venus (or penis, you're preference)

Ps. I totally want to see this video get reviewed after all this drama.

    • Just…just come here…come on. GROUP HUG!!!! Get in here Spudgy… *SQUISH*

    • I agree!

And, thank you for explaining Bilasa in another post.  I’m a new person for knowing now. LOL.

    • legendary6

“Since they don’t know them, they have to judge them based on their talent and not their legendary status [...]
I understand that and it would have been great if they did. I would be happy to read/watch a constructive criticism of the music itself, but nowhere in the video did I hear them judge based upon the substance of the song. I hear topping charts, crashing site, a lot of popularity references, failed english pronunciation (as a SHCJ, I have to say some of their english makes me embarrass but I digress) and the age factor. So, I think it’s pretty contradictory. But like you said, it’s their opinion and I have no right to personally throw insult their way, except I still firmly disagree. And it’s my opinion that I find the part about renaming Shinhwa’s fanclub a bit of an ignorant remark, especially toward one that established itself 14 years as a senior. But if it’s all in supposedly “good” joke…then, I guess it was a pretty bad move for Simon and Martina. SHCJ are kind of known for their huge ego as a member of SHCJ and sometimes more than being a Shinhwa fan itself, so it’s not a surprise for me if certain fans get upset over that.

    • legendary6

By the way, I’m a year younger than you :P I guess I’m young too, but that doesn’t give me an excuse to be oblivious (in general, not only toward Kpop). I hear a lot of the “I’m young” excuse from the next/my generation and it kind of disappoints me just because you’re “young” doesn’t give you an excuse for getting out of things. Oops, that was sort of off-topic :P

  51. sangsoon park

Hey Simon and Martina. From the first video of yours on ‘soondooboo’ restaurant, I have enjoyed every bits and pieces you experienced through your cameras in Korea. You guys were nice and respectful and showed love to Korean society and culture, that I could feel it. But nowadays, as you started this blogging as a full time job, I don’t feel that you guys are doing this blogging purely from your heart. I even feel you guy’s hard feelings on general Koreans. I don’t care whatever you guys are making videos about, but when you feel it’s not funny anymore, then it’s time to move on. It’s a shame that you wasted 3 years here in Korea not trying to learn Korean..You could have mentioned much more about Korean lyrics than stupid Venus or Penis joke.

    • Whoa. This comment has really really upset me WAY more then the Shinhwa fans.

First off, we know how to speak and read Korean, we just don’t announce everything we do and learn to the world, and I wouldn’t say learning Korean is the GOAL of living in Korea. We love Korea, Korean food, and Korean culture and we have plenty of Korean friends that we love too, so I think that’s not a WASTE of 3 years. Oh yeah, I (Martina) spent 3 of those years “WASTING” my time pouring my heart and soul into teaching my awesome Korean students.  And many years pouring my heart and soul into blogging AND PROMOTING Korea when we weren’t even making money from it.
There are a MILLION blogs online saying nothing but horrible and nasty stuff about life in Korea and we have NEVER EVER lowered ourselves to once share any bad experience we’ve had because we considered those bad experiences from that specific person and not Korea as a whole.  I’m going to take your comment as the same.

We still blog from our heart and if you don’t like our style, then here’s an English saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

  52. I think people wouldn’t respond like that to your video, if you used other words or said it in a different way.

  53. Lizzylilly101

    ROFL BATOOBA XDDD

  54. CoolStrawberry

You guise know when watching a simonandmartina video you will hear their opinion on a subject! Their own personal opinion if you don’t like to hear and respect their opinions then don’t watch ^-^ I wuv you Spudgy , Martina and Simon <3

    • SeoshiLove

But… before I can either choose to agree or disagree, I need to have seen the video right? I’m not mad at S&M for expressing their honest opinion, it’s just Simon’s attitude and way of expressing that honest opinion that bugs me.

    • I’m tired of this “don’t like don’t watch” attitude …. Simon and Martina express their opinions, post videos for people to see. Viewers are as much entitled to their opinion as Simon and Martina, and their way of expressing themselves is through comments and like or dislike button. Blogs are made for exchange of opinions.
I find most of the responses here and on YT respectful and articulated in their thoughts. Simon asked for viewers opinions in the video as well.
I watch and appreciate S&M for a long time now, and it is because I care about them that I bother to post my thoughts. Otherwise I would not waste time typing and thinking.
On this particular video I disagree with them, but that doesn’t meen I don’t respect their opinions. Exchange of opinions makes people grow.

      •  I guess it’s more appropriate to say “don’t be hatin’”. Because your allowed to disagree and express opinions, but that doesn’t mean people have to be rude. As in “if you hate them so much why are you wasting your time commenting”. Most people who comment are not simply disagreeing, but are being malicious and rude.

      • CoolStrawberry

Okay ^-^ hehe I agree with your point, but I think some people went to extreme with their opinions …..it just made me sad that they were attacking S&M TT A TT

  55. Shoolishja

This is the first Shinhwa’s song i’ve ever heard, not expecting anything at first. But then, i love it so much! It grews on me surprisingly quick. After watching the video (like,.. ten times :p), i just dive in to their past and current variety shows. They are funny as hell!! I guess they are born to be entertainers and that doesn’t age. Comparing them to NKOTB is kinda unfair, bcs when NKOTB occured their comeback single “Summertime”, they are too old for that single. It doesn’t really fit their age and leave the pedobear impression to me. kkkk sorry, just my opinion. But Shinhwa members are still on their early 30s, so if you compare them to BSB or NSYNC or Westlife, that is fair. Bcs i consider Mark from Westlife is still hot (though his gay, but its ok :’) ). IMO, Venus fits the man-band concept and Shinhwa still manage to have their charisma among kpop fans, not only fan in their time. And, i guess Venus is climbing up to number 3 on your chart, right? :))

  56. yes, the playlist mode is broken.
the latest Kcrunch coctail also was like this…

talking about SHINHWA once again. I do not think that Simon and Martina were mean because they said about Shinhwa’s impact on nowadays kpop charts as irrelevant. I think they were a bit mean because they seemed to talk too ironicly –> it looked like they were forced to say something nice but they didn’t want to.
I love sarcasm but it is passive aggressive behaviour. and people who are Shinhwa’s Changjo took it into themselves.

on the other hand, I do not think that flame-war here would help. stop fighting with mean words. it is for nothing and only show your frustration. it won’t help – but instead will show you as immature people.

btw, I also do not understand BILASA :(
    :D

  57. I dun know why i felt ‘offended’ by S&M views on SHINHWA. I personally barely knew them. I just knew eric becoz he is an actor for Que sera sera and Muyng Wol the Spy and Andy for the Season 1 We Got Married… I never knew their past song and what I feel when reading on ur post is like u guys just dont give any space for them… U guys also barely knew them but SERIOUSLY guys i hope U guys can be more open minded… TQ… I love VENUS aka PENIS…. hahaha

  58. hmmm the playlist doesn’t work too great this time. It plays your videos in playlist mode, but omitts the musicvideos.

  59. wow, you just dissed Shinhwa.  If this words gets out you’ll never get another interview with KPOP anything in the future.  You guys are really, really clueless about the almost mythical status of Shinhwa has not just with all current KPOP idols but the entire nation of Korea.  You best hope this video doesn’t get viewed by a real Korean in the industry.   You’ll be shunned everywhere… hope you can keep this going w/o actually going anywhere close to actual KPOP stars or insiders. Let’s see if the U-Kiss boys will even look at you after seeing this travesty.

  60. I understand Batooba and Batoost… but I don’t get Bilasa.  I feel like I’m so slow on picking up the joke.  I hope someone explains. Thanks. :D

  61. Way to get Butt Hurt you guise. Stop calling them ignorant or rude. Nothing they said was as such. I’m sure Shinhwa is an amazing group. They are not basing their review off of the older people who were actually around during the Shinhwa era, they are basing it off of the Era of SHINee, Super Junior, Big Bang etc etc, which as you all so “KINDLY” pointed out, aren’t the same thing. Since Simon and Martina weren’t apart of the Shinhwa revolution and don’t fully understand what the big deal is about them, they can only tell you their opinions based on that one song. Even if they did go back and listen to Shinhwa’s older songs they still wouldn’t understand the big deal about Shinhwa because they, like I said before, weren’t there. So cool your jets and just enjoy your fandoms.

  62. I think Simon and Martina were just doing their review base on their opinion and they do have their point when stated that Shinhwa were not having a big impact on Kpop Music Monday chart. A review can be positive or negative, it doesn’t mean they hate them or they disrespect the band, just because they don’t know them that much, like: they don’t even know about the name of their fanclub.

No server was crashed and no sign of flood of vote simply because we have to judge the situation base on Kpop Music Monday audience. The majority of them are foreign fans, they came to Kpop with the Hallyu wave. They know about new boyband, girlband due to the large exposure of these bands to the media, since the reach out of Kpop industry to the world from 2008. Old idol bands, even they were legend, because of the lack of media attention, will
be classed as “out of reach” somehow. Pick a simple example, maybe Simon and Martina are all excited over YG but maybe, they do not know much about 1TYM – another legendary band of YG.

It is true that most of Shinhwa’s fans are now at least in their late twenty or older, like me and I have to admit I’m not that all over crazy about voting and chart and etc, maybe because I’m lack of the fierce esprit of competition I used to have when I was teenagers. I don’t really care if “my oppas are not winning, I must do something”.  I’m just very glad I can see them perform on stage again, to hear their song and see them being together, enjoy the
wonderful time being a fangirl again. Once is a Shinhwa Changjo, forever will
    stay as Shinhwa Changjo.

  63. is no one mentioning SM using the poorly lit room for shinwha and that the girl floating at the end was scary..lol.. good song though!

  64. CUBE needs to hire a new stylist… BtoB looks EXACTLY like B2ST

  65. omg S and M i made a comment how i thought your review of shinee’s vid was more enthusiastic than your big bang.. i was just joking and stuff and people started replying and freaking out that I thought bb was better than shinee. and i was like well i do like BB better but just an opinion. and people kept freaking out so i had to delete the comment. so now I understand what you go through because It was one comment and a couple of replies but these fans are crazy! you cant have your own opinion they stress out major.. I feel bad for you cause a ton of people were commenting about your shinhwa review.. im not knowledgable about them because they werent together when i got into kpop but the song is catchy and they are cute and probably closer to my age than daesung *my husband*, but yea so stay strong and to all the Changjo’s,,, i understand your upset but give them a break. they were just saying…there opinion.. everyone is entitled.. just like i think Daesung should marry me.. you may disagree,,,,lol

    • Haha sorry to hear about your bad experience! The worst part about this is that we don’t even dislike Shinhwa! We were literally talking about our personal kpop chart ranking and joking about their age! TOTALLY JOKING but now even if we got to know Shinhwa’s music, the crazy fans would be like, “YOU’RE FAKING IT!! AGHHHH!” if we don’t like them, “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW GREAT THEY ARE! ARGGHHHH!!” You really can’t win at this point. This is really the ugly side of kpop fandoms. Next time we meet Daesung, I’ll put in a good word for you! ^^

  66. I think what EYK means is; Shinhwa was popular back in the day, but that was, well… back in the day. For some of us newer fans this is less of a comeback and more of a debut. No disrespect meant.

  67. dear Simon let me clarify you regarding the names of kpop bands
they are called backronims (I think it’s spelled like that) check it on wikipedia and there is a hole article there
and b2st is not read batoost as you say since 2 in Korean is 이 you read it  비르트 (I think that is how you spell it in Korean)
so… hope this clarifies some misunderstandings :D

  68. PerpetualWanderer

Honestly people. Simon and Martina were in no way disrespectful for some of you to be so indignant.  They gave Shinhwa the same humor treatment they give every other group.  It is critique mixed with lighthearted fun that points out the idiosyncrasies and randomness that makes kpop so entertaining in addition to the idols’ antics and the addictive music.

Their point was that Shinhwa doesn’t have the same hold over the younger generation now as the present idol groups do while the older generation is probably loving their comeback to a greater extent.  How is this IGNORANT or OFFENSIVE? Isn’t it true? Shinhwa is doing fine in the world of kpop, but for the younger generation, many would pick other younger groups over Shinhwa.  Just like in many more years, some other younger group will capture the hearts of teens and 20-somethings when Shinee and Bigbang etc. become old.

  69. ok even though Shinhwa didnt get a lot of votes and I agree with Simon on his point,,, I actually liked the song a lot! .. i hadnt really listened to kpop when i was younger so i didnt know them too well but in reality they are probably at the age that I should be swooning over since the other band’s members (like shinee or exo) that I love are way to young for me lolol… im a noona ..lol

  70. 1. Vussy — i died haha 2. S Club 7 Reference… wow i havent heard about them in forever THROW back!  i love it!

  71. I wonder if you guys will do a TLDR one of these days about fandoms and the comments you guys get.

  72. llamila

SORRY I POSTED THIS TWICE BUT I FAIL SINCE I ORIGINALLY WROTE IT IN THE WRONG VIDEO. REALLY REALLY SORRY S&M! XD

    S&M,
I don’t know if you read all your comments but there are a few things
that you don’t seem to understand about Shinhwa. The reason they “came
back” now is because they had to do the military service. They are only
in their early thirties unlike Madonna. The only reason she is still
“relevant” is because she went nowhere, which isn’t Shinhwa’s fault as
they had to complete their military service. Also, they are close in age
to BEG, Bom and Dara from 2NE1 and a SUJU’s Leetuk.

The reason why you think they are irrelevant is because unlike the
other bands I mentioned, they “disappeared” for a while but if they
didn’t have to then it would be like those bands I mentioned where
nobody cares about their age and they are still popular. Also, the great
majority of Shinhwa fans are all over Asia which explains why you won’t
get many people voting as most don’t speak English. And, last but not
least, two Shinhwa members speak English as they were brought up in the
US so there is really no problem in the way they say Venus.

Also, unlike western artists, in kpop, Chinese po and Japanese pop,
the older bands are very much respected. I know it may seem that we want
everyone to worship them but that is not the case. Just look at Lee
Seung Chul who is in his forties, still popular and very much respected
in the industry and I don’t think many Koreans would call him irrelevant
    just because of his age.

Hope that helps and please do give Shinhwa a chance! It would be a
real shame if you disliked them simply because of the small English
speaking fanbase, as opposed to their really really big Asian fanbase.
    :)

  73. yes… we’re called BOICE ^w^….

  74. Why are people calling Simon and Martina ignorant? I see their point. Shinhwa’s a well respected band and they even acknowledged that fact. They weren’t being rude or disrespectful but they were trying to be playful. It’s the same attitude they have with all of their other videos. People don’t exactly get butthurt when they make fun of other idol groups, do they?
In my opinion, Simon does have a point. Although Shinhwa’s INCREDIBLY popular, their fans from several years ago have all grown up. However, I’m not saying that they’ve lost their fan base. The fans that have grown into their late twenties are thirties have MATURED (I need to caps lock for emphasis). They have jobs and families now and less time for stalking their idols, going to concerts, or dedicating shrines towards Shinhwa. People who are obsessed and stalk their idols are typically students who do not have to focus on work and stuff. Adults are generally more busy, I’m assuming? Yes, I agree there are a lot of fans still, but there won’t be a lot of super FANATICS, which is what we see normally from SHINee, Super Junior, 2PM, etc. It’s us fanatics who repeatedly vote for our favourite obsessions that allow them to win, whether it was on eatyourkimchi or any other site. And whether people like it or not, companies and businesses love promoting groups that have more obsessed fans, because that equals more $$$.

  75. Chris Chin

I’m 33 now started listening to Shinhwa when I was 19 and it was one of the first groups that I got into when I first started listening to Kpop.  For the most part I think EYK is gear towards the 30 and below group.  For the group that is around 30 and above, we tend to be lurking in the background and not constantly vote and so it won’t be the best indicators..  The Shinhwa fans have all grown up, have kids, in the workforce now and for the most part been most loyal to this group. I respect your opinion on this but I would have to disagree you will having judge an idol group by how much traffic you get for a particular group and to note who their target audience group Shinhwa is mainly focusing and it’s their loyal fans. But to each to their own opinion. I really do enjoy all your videos Simon and Martina and I really am glad you stick to your guns on your opinions because it is your opinions and that is what makes your site works. All opinions in one way or another going to offend someone. Sigh.

  76. simon and martina please never stop doing videos with “YOUR” opinion – even if this means making fun of BIGBANG. even if you destroy them to pieces i would much rather hear an honest opinion then some ass kissing.

    • Some people on YouTube were like, “how would you like it if someone made fun of Big Bang or if TOP had a comeback at 30 and someone called him old!!??” and I’m like…I wouldn’t care…and I’m pretty sure we’ve made fun of Big Bang several times….hahahahahah!  I’m shocked that people are so moved to anger by other people’s opinions! ^^

  77. It is because of groups like Shinhwa that idols such as SHINee and B1A4 exist! If there was no starter generation of idol groups then the flood of idols today would not exist. Shinhwa did more for the music industry than any of these idol groups will do in their lifetime. Just because the site didn’t crash doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be given the same amount of attention as ANY one of these idols today.

  78. I have to admit that you know more about K-pop than me, but you don’t know sh*t about ShinHwa. Over the past 14 years, they’ve been through a lot together and actually survived sabotage by South Korean powerhouse SM entertainment. They have something special that they can share with their fans and you will never understand. So can you please STFU

‘Shinhwa doesn’t really mean anything to us.’ > yeah, you really mean nothing to them, too.

    • But apparently, we mean a lot to the Shinhwa fan group. People are taking the time out of their busy lives to leave us so many lovely comments! Awww! ^^

      • llamila

Think about it, you guys are kind of well know and it’s the same thing that happens when someone well know says something that disappoints people or that people disagree with. You guys make fun of groups all the time but this is the first time I’ve seen you guys be so mean even in your replies. I get it’s because of what people are saying but you’ve gotten pretty mean opinions before and you’ve been the better person. You are making it seem as it’s a Shinhwa fanbase only type deal. I remember something like this happening with another of the videos you reviewed [can't remember who it was, maybe Girls Generations?] where people were going crazy too but you guys weren’t like this. Shinhwa is one of the groups I love [not my favorite but one of] and you have made fun of the other groups I like but this one felt different. I don’t know how else to explain it lol

        • We’ve been more forceful in our responses to people this time.  Why? Because we always back away.  People rant, people throw darts and hurl insults, and we always just tell ourselves not to worry about it, move on, and we usually just back away.  So now we feel like defending ourselves, and not even by hurling back insults, but by forcefully and thoughtfully stating our opinions.

No, we didn’t slink away this time, and I don’t think we’ll do so again.

  79. I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about Shinhwa since I started liking kpop around 2008… but I am in my late twenties and feel less like a pedophile when I watch this group :D They’re really good too… and I really like this song!

  80. Well that was incredibly ignorant. You make it sound as if crazed fangirls voting constantly is a good indicator of a band’s success. In case you don’t know, your servers are not the best indicators of popularity. Shinhwa is not only a legend, but a base the kpop you know and love now is built upon. If SHINee were to come back 10 years from now, I bet you wouldn’t appreciate people saying they were irrelevant and their comeback being “just not right”. Also, I don’t see how you’re respecting Shinhwa at all since you didn’t even bother to get the fanclub’s name right. Mind you, this fanclub has been around longer than some of your subscribers have been alive. In addition, Shinhwa pronounces “V” just fine, thank you very much.

    • First off: I wouldn’t care if anyone bashed any band I like. Why? Because it’s just their opinion! It doesn’t effect ANYTHING! I still like the band! The band is still successful! Yay all around!

Second: Shinhwa will always will be a legend to those people that know Shinhwa, but that will NEVER change the fact that we just personally don’t know them! It’s not an insult, it’s just a plain old fact.

Third: We make fun of TONS of fan club names and the names of actual kpop bands! It’s just for fun.

  81. frisbeyminah

hi simon and martina! i have a suggestion for your website. i was thinking, maybe you ould make links for your kpop indie, kpop charts updates, and other kpop related videos you do. why, you may ask, well, recently i was trying to download some of the kpop indie musics, but since theyre not online, i just listen to them on your site, but its hard to look for them all the time, so i was thinking if you just made a link to them, it would be so much easier!! i would be very grateful if you did that!

  82. Again I love CN Blue! “Hey you” was soo cute I loved it. Surprisingly though I really liked “Venus”, at least over “Insane”. It was really shexshy. ;3 btw BATOOBA!

  83. legendary6

I’ve calmed down from the initial rage, so I’ll try to do
this civilly. As a Shinhwa ChangJo, I’ll try not to let Shinhwa down by using
expletives. I don’t hate on the guy, he’s pretty funny (on the second watch, I
actually giggle at the way he said “manband”), but you guys ask for opinions in
the comments so here is mine. First, are you guys nitpicking on the “V” and the “P” in Venus as a joke? It must be a joke to nitpick on that for a title song. Then you guys say “Shinhwa
is only relevant in the past” I can’t agree. Considering the fact they
are the only Kpop band to last 14 years and make a pretty darn successful
comeback (maybe not “successful” like “newer” group but that’s a
given with how kpop is run by teenage angst nowadays) They are paving the way
for current boy bands and telling them that it IS possible to break the 5 year
idol curse and, as long as your fans are there, you can continue to stand
on stage after military. How, then, are they “irrelevant”? Maybe it’s
my bias coming through, but I think these newer groups are lucky they have a
role model like Shinhwa, to do all these solo activities and still stay
together as one group and make good music under the group’s name, perhaps even their
own company. Of course, unless you guys are speaking in the context of “popularity”
relevance because that’s what I get a lot from this video – the huge amount of
emphasis on popularity and age. The implication I get is that “you’re old, you
don’t matter like the young kids, don’t make music” and that “music is only for the young”. Also your demographic is
mostly younger teens that have the time to sit at their desk and vote mindlessly
compared to Shinhwa’s audience who are mostly in the working force. Perhaps if
you’ve given a review on the substance of the song/album, and don’t like it, I
probably won’t get so worked up, but as you can see, ever since Shinhwa’s
announcement of a comeback, we’ve (Shinhwa ChangJo, the “butthurt Shinhwa fans” who have waited 4 years loyally for their return, as you ignorantly refer us to along with
some other made up fanclub name) had to deal with younger fans talking shit
about how our oppas are too old they need to get the fuck out of the kpop
scene, yeah…your video is like adding on to it. It’s sad you guys put an expiration date on your idols/bands/music. Btw, I’m 19 and am a SHCJ, so stop it with the generalization of all SHCJ being mothers with kids and talking as if they’re about to die from being “old”. And you should know (or probably already does) that when it comes to stats on sales and whatnot, there is only so much international fandom can do in comparison to the k-fandom…and these voting things, SHCJ has already come to terms that we won’t be able to beat the fans of younger idol groups, but we still do because we support our oppas. You shouldn’t base what Shinhwa is all about on how your chart rankings is and age as you do in this video. Anyway, it’s my two cents. Hope it’ll help
you understand some of the butthurt Shinhwa ChangJos’ sentiments and rage. SHCJ is a very peaceful fanbase, but when
it comes to Shinhwa or SHCJ themselves, SHCJ are fiercely loyal and sometimes aggressive in the way we behave and we’ve been this way for 14
years and some later than 14 years. So I apologize for whatever threats you’re receiving from other angry SHCJs, and though I respect your opinion, I don’t agree with it.

  84. SeoshiLove

    Simon, constructive criticismmmmmm….

  85. kyoungyun

you have under estimated the power of shinhwa changjo. I found your review on shinhwa disrespectful, distasteful, and just ignorant.

  86. SeoshiLove

Actually, I’m one of those who didn’t know much about Shinhwa before this comeback. I wasn’t expecting to go WUAAAH over them, but I did :P they’re so freakin’ awesome!!!

  87. Rawrrklove

I actually really like Venus :)

  88. i’m only 16 and not Korean i’m Arabian and the only song i know by shinwa is this but i really love it i know how much people love shinwa even if i only knew 2 members or maybe 3 but i see how much the other idols love and respect them even my oppa 2PM went to there concert and that really shows how much shinwa is a legendary group ><
way to go shinwa good job

  89. I’m 21 and a big Shinhwa fan. I got into kpop in 2006, and Shinhwa was one of first groups I knew.  Can you imagine what Shinhwa would have looked like to a 15 yr old?  Yes they were considerably older than me at the time, but they were good looking and talented!   Their songs were so good and even now they still sound good. Shinhwa is an extremely talented and experienced group. I hope new kpop fans give them a chance even though they are “old”.

  90. I don’t get it tbh…
And I hate it, that there are so many ppl who says that it would be pronounced with a ‘B’ or ‘P’ because I cannot hear that.. they say clearly ‘Venus’.. it’s a bad joke but okay, ppl are this way…
and why aren’t they relevant anymore now..?  all the younger boybands are honored to be able to perform on the same stage as them..
aaaand.. why isn’t it right to come back after some years? (this guy says that at around 1:47..) will that be the same thing, when Super Junior, SHINee or whoever come back after years? probably no, because all those little girls will get hyper again.. and when they all come back from the army, the fans would be much older too, so what’s with this argument?

anyway.. just because the servers didn’t crush down.. please, you can’t compare Shinhwa with SHINee.. both are totally different groups. and it’s nothing about server crashes.. I have many friends who are absolutely in love with SHINee and I can’t get it, but I guess that’s because I’m 25 and too old for this group XDD

it would have been so awesome if I knew Shinhwa more than just 3 years.. when they debuted I was 12, perfect age for a boygroup XDD but I don’t live in Korea, so I just heard of them after started to listen to dbsk.. but in this 3 years I really learned to love them, and SHCJ is an awesome fanbase and I’m happy to be a part of it. <3

it's okay to say that it's something different between Shinhwa and the newer groups, because it really is.. Shinhwa had gone through things, other groups would never dream of, and I'm oproud that they still are together with no changings for 14 years.

    • Hatsuharu Sohma

The thing about the V is that koreans in general have problems speaking the V and most times comes like a P or B… Trying seeing Infinite’s Nothing’s Over to see what I mean. S&M are not saying that Shinhwa speaks venus wrong, but that many will… it’s the same with the F sound. Ever heard in tv someone calling Fei from Miss A or Tiffany from SNSD? They speak the F like a P…

  91. idrinkT_0219

Being 16 and not Korean, I’ve heard of Shinwa but never listened to them.
    BUT VENUS. I LOVE IT.
ARGHH. I don’t know who to vote for now D:

  92. I’ve never heard of Shinhwa but i like the song. The “uh-uh-uh-uh” part sounds a bit off-beat though.

  93. Grace Hong

first, please be respectful and do your research before you rename a fanclub, especially one that is the longest running and most mature of all the fanclubs out there. Would you do that to another fanclub? Just because SHCJ is old, doesn’t mean you get to ignore and make fun of them.

second, just because they are not crashing YOUR servers doesn’t mean they aren’t making a huge impact. For your information, this album was not created to earn money or more popularity. Over the past 14 years, Shinhwa has proven themselves by winning all of the major awards from all kinds of genres. They’re not back to be greedy and steal opportunities from their younger colleagues.
Their comeback was entirely made to keep a promise that Shinhwa made for their fans four years ago. That’s why most SHCJ members could care less about what you say about their comeback or where Shinhwa is placed on the music charts.

    And lastly…
    Let’s be honest here.
How do you mistake a V/B sound for a P sound, in Korean and English. Only immature people would make fun of Venus as Penis. Yes, Simon, I am calling you immature. :]

    So yeah.
I’m not saying that you should LOVE the song and be EXCITED for Shinhwa’s comeback, but at least show some respect for what they’ve done and get to know them instead of making ignorant remarks. I really hope you’ll be able to review Shinhwa’s MV and learn a little bit about them.

Also, just because you are in your 30s doesn’t mean you give up on the things you love and the people you love. This is why so many other idol groups respect Shinhwa, because they’ve stuck it out through all good and bad of the entertainment world.

And what is wrong with confident men?

    •  this is their vlog so they are entitled to do whatever they want which includes making fun of kpop “legendary” bands.  sorry to break it to you but shinhwa is not as popular or legendary as all their fans say they are.  the song was average at best, and for a long awaited comeback, shinhwa should have chosen a more epik (yes i spell epik with a k) song. and as for thinking that koreans don’t mistake the V with a B/P sound are you ever mistaken.  i lived in korea for two years and heard the mispronounciation of the V for a B/P sound all the time.  and you’re right there is nothing wrong with confident men =)

      • Grace Hong

But now you are adding words to my mouth and that’s not fair. I never talked about how popular or legendary Shinhwa is or that the song is AMAZING, so your points are kinda invalid to my comment.

I have also lived in Korea for over two years and even teach children, and for the record I have never heard my students mistaken the word Venus as Penis before, especially when the word venus exists directly in Korean. Maybe I’m surrounded by students who have good pronunciations, but that has never been the case.

but I’m glad that we can at least agree that there is nothing wrong with confident men though.

        •  i never added any words to your mouth. i said shinhwa is not as popular or legendary as “their fans” (not grace hong) would like everyone else to believe.   perhaps i shouldn’t have used that comment as a reply to your comment but i was just making my point as to why simon and martina may think they are “irrevelant”.  i understand the impact they’ve had on kpop but artistically speaking they don’t much for me.  i admire the loyalty of the shinhwa fans but you shouldn’t expect everyone else to feel the same way – including simon and martina.  it’s great that you had students with excellent english pronounciation skills but if you lived in korea for that long you of all people should know that many koreans do mix up the V sound for a B/P. i’m not sure if you’ll be able to read this person’s note on facebook but read #4 if you can https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=2210324107.  in case you can’t see it, the note is called “top 10 quotes from korean students/teachers and it says “4. “You look like Penis” -Korean kid to my woman co teacher (he meant she looks like Venus)”.  if you’re still not convinced hear infinites “nothing’s over”

btw, your first paragraph in reply to my comment just proved my point and their point.

        • Grace Hong

I see how you can say that, but you read my comment wrong. When I emphasized AMAZING, i wasn’t STATING that it was amazing and that EVERYONE should think it was amazing.  you just kind of inferred that and maybe it was my mistake for writing it in that way. I was trying to sarcastic and be an enthusiastic fan girl, but that didn’t carry out very well. oh the world of the interwebs.

          anyways,
I honestly don’t want to keep arguing with you because I know that whatever I say is not going to change your mind since you are adamant about S&M being able to state their opinions, and I am completely fine with that. You’re right, this is S&M’s blog and they can say what they want.

i’m not trying to get S&M to change their opinions – I even said that in my original post. I’m not God or a dictator.
S&M said they know Shinhwa’s ‘legendary’, but don’t really know why – all I asked for S&M was get to know them, instead of spewing out and implying random things about them to the EYK fanbase. That’s why I want Shinhwa to win for music mondays, so S&M can learn about why Shinhwa is ‘legendary.’

As for the V/B/P sound, for a Korean, who knows the song’s name is a Venus and is speaking in Korean, they will never pronounce it as penis. 비너스, 피너스 – there is a huge difference. Now maybe if they were in a setting when they had to speak english, it’s might be different, like your example.
So maybe I was wrong, but I still stand by my comment about how only immature people would notice venus = penis.

        • SWalkerTTU

In the old (McCune-Reischauer) Romanization, 비 was Romanized as “pi” because the Korean /b/ sound at the outset of a word is a bit harder than /b/ in English, and so quite close to /p/ in English. This is why the surname 박 is commonly romanized as “Park”. In the old Romanization, 피 — now (officially) Romanized as “pi”, used to be “p’i” or “phi”, showing strong aspiration (notably stronger than in English). Thus, to the untrained English-hearing ear, 비너스 does sound like “penis” (especially since English does not have the unrounded front vowel).

        • Grace Hong

wow, thank you for that lesson. I actually learned something new today.

So…if a Korean does say 비너스, a non-Korean would hear 피너스?

  94. Tsk.. tsk.. didn’t even bother to know the name of SHCJ? if it was a joke, it was done in really poor taste.

  95. YAY for an Sclub7 reference–that takes me back to middle school or so!

  96. olivialoveskpop

I really like Shinhwa’s song, but I don’t think I could ever fangirl over a bunch of 30 year olds. :s But I’m sure these guys were hawt several years ago.

    •  So when your idols grow a little older you will stop being their fan?

      • olivialoveskpop

No that’s not it. I’ll still like them because when they’re older, I’ll be older as well continuing to like and listen to their music. Like Martina said, older fans of New Kids on the Block get excited over their comeback, so I think it will be the same for me just with BigBang and SHINee.

        • legendary6

And a few years from now when Big Bang turns 30 and a lot of the younger kids running around and saying they should stop making music, what will your reaction be? Will you sit back and watch as people tell your oppas are not fit to make music on the basis of age and not musicality? This is what SHCJ are having to deal with right now.

        • olivialoveskpop

My reaction would be “I don’t care what these kids say, I’ll always like BigBang.” It’ll really no different that what the Shinhwa fans are saying right now.
**Note how I never said anything to bash Shinhwa, I actually praised them for this song.

        • legendary6

And I never said anything to criticize you but to throw out another perspective to consider.

    • I think Shinhwa is not the “one” for you, but trust me sometimes you fangirl over ppl as old as ur parents…e.g. Cha Seung Won, he’s SO sexy! ;)

  97. I like Shinhwa alot ..The new CD is great better then the last…I have been listing to Kpop for 7yrs now. They r not one of my OMG groups but I like them just the same. My granddaughter not so much she is 2yrs old and love’s Big Bang. Fantastic Baby she can’t get enough of.

  98. haha glad i’m not the only person who noticed all the white people. i seriously think that cnblue were the only non white people on that set. that’s pretty much all i could focus on when watching this mv xD

  99. I never saw any of Shinhwa songs or mv, but since I watched Venus I’ve been attracted to them and I’m really liking them. I’m very happy that they came back, so that I can get to know them. I also love that they are a band of men, not boys, and I’m actually enjoying feeling attracted to them without guilt. I’ve actually been replying the MV many times.
I can feel the confidence that comes from success shining through Shinhwa’s MV.

About crashing servers, I don’t think that is a good indication of popularity. I’m 28 and I don’t sit the whole day voting for my favorite band (JYJ) and I don’t care too much about every poll and chart on the internet. But I love them dearly, I buy their album and DVDs and support them in concerts. Crashing servers is for a teenage audiance, older fans behave differently.

I read many comments on YT, and I really love you and appreciate you Simond and Martina, but I have to say that I agree with the sentiment of anger and disappointment towards your video.

  100. minty_chip

Let’s not hate on Simon and Martina. If Shinwha is not your bias or you just heard about them, you probably would not be as excited as the noonas or older fans. Shinhwa’s song Venus is catchy and good but their performance was not up to par. However, I appreciate that they still perform and are there for their dedicated fans.

  101. alicool442

i love Shinwa’s song i dont know much about them but it is good =) i LOVE the dance too!!!

  102. Eh, im 18, and i liked “Venus”. Not my favorite song, but it defined warrants listening to it again.

  103. Odice Blackjacker

I don’t care about any of them, I want a trully talented group to be reviewed, I mean SPICA with Painkiller !!!!!

  104. Simon and Martina, you underestimate the power of noonas. Were growing in number. Actuallly im 20, not really old but in kpop its considered old. I have to disagree with you guys on this. Shinwha are seasoned artists and it shows. Venus is not even their best song, and they did a good job mixing the sounds of new and old kpop.

Plus in Korea pll have been growing crazy for them and older kpop fans are rejoicing their return. i think u guys were way off on this one. Even though they wont be mega huge, I think they have a very decent following.

  105. YOU KNOW WHAT WILL BE AWESOME?
if CNBLUE had featured EYK in their vid!
I bet we would all go crazy saying WE KNOW THEM!!
next time Kpop producers, when you’re filming an MV you could consider featuring EYK in those MV so, ya know, WE WOULD SCREAM OUR HEARTS OUT!

  107. I’m kind of tired of the ‘perverted’ feeling I have when I see those young little boys acting all sexy, naked.. etc. So when I heard SHINHWA will be back my heart start beating very fast! I don’t know.. maybe 6 years ago I would have screamed of joy and excitement if EXO came out but now… I like more the manly feeling from SHINHWA than from EXO. And I’ve been waiting for their comeback. CNBlue’s song is great as well. I really love the way they’re doing music. But for now my vote goes to SHINHWA – VENUS.

  108. Shinhwa isn’t well-known outside Korea I think. and your audience consists of foreigners mostly :)
but you have to watch latest Music Bank on KBS… all those people shouting “Shinhwa” and singing along. I have never seen something like this on Music Mondays, even when TVXQ performed.
and, somehow, this is very refreshing that they are my age and still perform as an idol  group. all nowadays idol groups consist of boys and girls nearly a decade younger than me >.<

  109. I am just mindboggled by your logic about SHINHWA. I’m afraid I’ll have to call you out on this one and say it’s just pure ignorance. Instead of turning them down by saying their in the past, server isn’t crashing, doesn’t seem to resonate with your audience (in fact all i see in the comments are waves of support for Shinhwa) and that the votes aren’t there., why don’t you turn it around and try to do some research on these legendary guys and introduce to your so called younger-teenie-bopper audience a group like this? Also, I’m seeing a lot of people saying their fans are all mid 20s – 30s. In fact, they have a decent teen base as well. I know cause I went to their concert and am a SHCJ. But honestly, a general rule of thumb is basically think before you speak or write. You mentioned marketing, PLEASE SHINHWA is not back to make BIG BUCKS… their back for their FANS… yes their FANS… unlike current idol fans who flock like waves from one to the next…… SIMONANDMARTINA I really suggest you to do some research and look more into SHINHWA for maybe future videos but I don’t think I plan on coming back…

    • kyoungyun

you put my thoughts into words, thank you! im infuriated. i demand an apology video.

      • Way to get butt hurt really easily people….Simon and Martina are just stating this as a people who got into the Hallyu wave late. It doesn’t mean they disrespect them any less; they just honestly don’t know who Shinhwa is. I didn’t either when this song went up on their chart so I googled them….I love this song, but you are going way too far….who are you to “demand an apology” from them? Honestly you are having a negative effect on new listeners to Shinhwa like me. However, I not gonna be one of those people that because they don’t like the fan base say that they don’t like the group. Simon and Martina do this for fun, I’m pretty sure they don’t do this to purposely bash on k-pop idols, so please be respectful to them and act your age.

      • Laedo_Ledo

Child, please.  You demand an apology video because you don’t agree with their opinion and you’re offended? What about what Simon said was rude?  He was very polite when he was talking about Shinhwa.  It doesn’t matter if you agree with it or not they did/said nothing that requires an apology.

People need to know the difference between stating an opinion and being rude.  They’re only responsible for what they say and how they say it.  The rest is up to the viewers to be mature and understand that they’re simply stating what they think – which is why people watch their videos anyway.

It really bothers me how you spelt “they’re” wrong.

I should probably tell you that S Club 7 is getting back together for a summer tour and possibly a new record deal. Come on, you didn’t want to join the ‘S Club Party’?

As for Shinhwa not applying to a younger demographic, I am 21 years old. I haven’t quite gotten to the age where I think I should be calling myself  a ‘noona’ but if going by your standards, should I be?

One more thing- the name of Shinhwa’s fan club is ‘Shinhwa Changjo’. I am quite offended as a fan that you take the time to research other aspects of K-Pop whereas a simple google or wikipedia search could have told you the name.

  111. Batooba give me a very Batoost feel in terms of sound and look. Maybe cause they’re from the same company..but the song’s rather catchy~ XD I like it.

And I can’t say the same for Shinhwa. It’s great they’re back but somehow I feel like they’re worn out and tired…I don’t know..but that’s what I feel from that MV.

  112. punkyprincess92
    punkyprincess92

hahaha S Club 7!!!!!!!! i used to LOVE them so much!!!!!!! (i want Busted back!!)

  113. It’s like you eat alphabet soup and poop out band names. ”
    BAHAHAHA! But yeah, true.

I like CN BLUE- catchy song, fun set, straightforward video, shows them playing instruments – but LOL at all the white people. Was that one guy directing traffic in the hallway?

BATOOBA! Is it just me or does that guy singing on the roof  @ 0:38 look like he could be Junsu’s (JYJ) little brother?!? I think it’s partly the styling, but still.

  114. It is strange to see them performing, as they are considered old in the Kpop world, but I’m glad they are back. Its kinda creepy for me to watch SHINee and all the debuting rookies trying to act sexy when they aren’t even 18/19 yet. I feel like a creep since I’m years older than them.

  115. I ended up listening to S Club 7 because of you ;]

  116. Normally enjoy your videos but offended that Martina didn’t bother google the name of Shinhwa’s fan club. Making fun of one of the oldest kpop fandoms is disrespectful to say the least. Also, most Shinhwa fans are in their early/mid/late twenties. As someone in this age demographic I can say that we have better things to do and higher priorities than voting on random charts and what not. Although I am no longer a devoted Shinhwa Changjo, I am overjoyed that they have remained together after all this time and continue to release good music. Venus is very ‘Shinhwa’, and listening to it brings back past memories of listening to Shinhwa’s music and enjoying them on variety shows during the high school years. They were the first band that got me into Kpop and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart <3

  117. Tiago Godoi

sorry but… where is spica? *cries*

  118. Lindsay Smith

Boy you guys decided to really put your necks on the guillotine XD

I hadn’t listened to any of their stuff before and mostly knew about them through Eric and also am about 10 years younger than them, but when their album dropped, I was in love. I think the single is amazing, the rest of the album even more so, especially “It Hurts”. I did have some anticipation as the excitement from other fans and especially other idols for their comeback (one of those times when “comeback” actually makes sense) was really infectious, but still wasn’t sure what to expect. But I got quality music, interesting MV, and cool choreography. Also, actual grown men performing is a plus, not a minus (no awkward “oh, he’s hot” “oh…he’s a child” moments here). They have a sexiness and a confidence that only comes with age. One person mentioned they’re a “breath of fresh air”, and that’s exactly what I felt with Shinhwa’s comeback.

  119. For me, Shinhwa is a breath of fresh air actually. They’re mature, confident, they know what they’re doing, their talent is indisputable, their album is consistent and I can’t imagine their image bouncing from aegyo-balls to manly men from single to single (and there are no awkward moments of under-aged crotches in my face).

I haven’t listened to Shinhwa before their latest album and they blew me away at first listen which isn’t something I experience often. I’m so glad they’re back even though they’re basically new to me.
Rookie bands often seem lost and it takes a while for them to find their sound (which is rarely unique) and start looking comfortable in the spot light. Shinhwa’s experience takes away all the baby-illnesses and leaves us with amazing music and fun idols.

  120. I love Shinhwa, I think they are awesome and sexy.Yes, they are not boys any more, but I think that it’s great that they are back. Does it mean I am old? (18y.o.)

    • so if it means that you are old, than I’m too old XD I’m 25 and I’m thinking the same, they are awesome and sexy and I’m happy that they don’t look like boys, but men. Guess that’s because I’m over 20 and I feel awkward to like my bias in other groups who are just turned legal XD I mean, I can only say to half of Super Junior ‘Oppa’, and I won’t talk about B2ST, U-Kiss or all the others XD (Just thinking about NU’EST, four of them are nine years younger than me.. T__T)

  121. saanrio

“Long story short, we can only talk about Shinhwa based on the song we
heard today…which is alright. Nothing really that takes us by storm.
And the video is of confident men rather than of growing boys…so…yeah.
    Decent song, we guess!”

You make that sound like a BAD thing, there… o.0?

How is them being hot, amazing, confident, MEN a BAD THING?  How is having absolutely, 100% NO DOUBT that you are perving on someone completely legal and in no way jailbait a BAD thing?

I would personally love to see them be the role models for more groups.  I would love to see more group aspire to the Shinhwa brand of ‘I don’t have to show off my abs and use the tricks these younger kids do to show how sexy I am because I am and we ALL know it’ kind of sexy than what we get from a lot of groups right now.  I love the younger groups, don’t get me wrong, but Shinhwa is on a completely different level.

Confident, sexy MEN > Jailbait boys.

  122. Um Hey You was recorded in America, hence the white people.
    Shinhwa fans are Shinhwa Changjo.
Your playlist mode is also broken. It keeps putting the MVs together and your bits together. If they show the MVs at all.

  123. bellabonkers

Awwww i was hoping you would talk more on the BTOB song.

  124. Nah, no hate from me. I’m not a huge Shinhwa fan but they were the first kpop group that really got me into kpop and I heard of them late, like back in 2006. They’re one of the few groups (along with H.O.T and G.O.D) that I can truly call “oppa”s since I’m in my late 20′s. I was a bit worried about their comeback but I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t go all out to compete or sound like the many hoobae groups of now. While their sound has a new sound (such as dubstep), it still has a very Shinhwa-esque aura to it. It reminded me of “Brand New” from a few years ago. I still think they’re relevant, a bit nostalgic but a breath of fresh air among all these debuting groups this year. It’s nice to see an old familiar face again. Makes me want to rewatch their old MVs as ridiculous and cringeworthy some were lol But that old kpop really had a distinct sound.

  125. BtoB reminds me of the french boyband we had in the 90s called 2be3 (yeah, they were three)(and it was supposed to sound like “to be free”) (and only french people knew them anyway), we could start an awful boyband name contest.

  126. omg canadian listen to s club 7
i thought it was just a english thing
    I LOVED THEM
“dont stop booging to the boogy boogy beat, dont stop booging to the s club beat”

  127. silverkittenbd

is there a limit for voting and sharing bcz the numbers doesnt change when i do??

  128. Lol youtube play list wanted to warn me for the Shinhwa video he just skipped on and went to martina her part :P

  129. Shinhwas fanclub name is Shinhwa Changjos :)

  130. bobbiipin

I agreed to Simon that Shinwa comeback is not very healthy for marketing. Personally, I’ve only heard the name ‘Shinwa’ but never actually listened to their song. So there aren’t a lot of the possibility that I will sit in front of the computer for a whole day voting for them.

However, at the same time, this is an opportunity to introduce this group to younger audiences. Yes, they might not crashed your server, but at least it made some people (like me) aware of them, their ability, and their song.

So I’m not completely disagree with Simon and Martina, but I’m not agreeing with you all the way either

And I guess this comes down to the ‘Song’ itself. If the song is good, they got my vote. If not, then too bad….. :)

  131. Shinhwa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so glad because of comeback of shinhwa!! I can’t write in english well so I can’t write a lot of words for comeback of shinhwa but I want to recommend two music of shinhwa ‘wild eyes’ and ‘brand new’ to you. They are old but good songs.

  132. Oh Shinhwa…I actually love the song, I can totally see myself raving to a remix of it lol. But I think they need to stick to something a little more their age, maybe ballads, acting or…retirement jk jk ;)

  133. Since my Korean obssesion started with ShinHwa I was so waiting for they’re come back. I was so happy that they returned. I love the song but MV was… a bit.. awekward..? lol, But, personaly for me it was such an event since I knew them before. Their previous work, their X-man shows.. Seeing them again was like goin back in time. You dont have that experiance with them but just think of your very first k-pop band that you loved commin back on stage and thats how it was for many of us to see ShinHwa. (even if i still belive they could do better with the dance choreography, haha). And no matter what Im their fan for life. ^.^v  Oh, and Im 26 so i perfectly go into mid 20s fan range hehe.

  134. Caroline King

Just think how crazy excited you would be if DB5K got back together and had a comeback, or if SJ or Shinee went off to the army for several years and managed to stay together and come back and this was their comeback song…if you’re fans of them now, think about how happy or excited you would be…that’s my take on Shinhwa

    • Oh yeah, we get it. I’d be really excited, but I STILL wouldn’t give a crap what other people said or think about DBSK. Other people’s comments or opinions don’t affect my love for a band. :D

      • Caroline King

Totally kinda cool that you took the time to respond to me :), just really was passing through and dropping my 2-cent thoughts on the whole matter. But I do agree with you and I definitely respect your opinions and videos, too! I also see where the other commentors are coming from although some are um…more passionate about it?

Ultimately I’m glad you have this forum where people can have a (generally)good discussion about the trends in kpop. I find this topic especially relevant in the setting of what happens and what will happen to kpop bands when they get older (considering there are so many new bands coming out that I can’t even figure out who is what), and how they can stay relevant to both their hardcore fans and brand themselves to new fans as they come back to a setting that has also moved on. It is especially relevant, I feel, because since miltary enlistment is mandatory, all the kpop boy bands are going to have to face this facinating dilema (if they don’t disband before then >_<).

Otherwise, since it seems you are reading the comments in this section, just wanted to say hiiii! ^__^'n""""

  135. silverkittenbd

Don’t forget to vote for Nu’est’s Face as well!!! :p

  136. In my opinion, I’m a new kpop fan but I’m obsessed with their new song. I totally agree that they probably shouldn’t have named their song that considering I’m hearing something totally different and wrong. People question why I like Shinhwa though I’m super young [14], but that song is just awesome. I just hope that they’re song will be able to get just as famous as the new debut groups or SHINee.

CN Blue’s new song is really catchy but what’s up with the daridoo nonsense that went on in I’m A Loner and Intuition. It has to stop man. But, I still love the song.

  137. thisisjustforfunval

LOL NKOTB did try a comeback a few years ago and then last year I believe went on tour with Backstreet Boys. It was called NKOTBB. Think it only excited their fans from back in the day, didn’t make a huge impression on the music world. (FYI New Kids on the Block was my first concert).

    •  Their 2009 comeback album “The Block” was #1 on the Billboard Pop Album chart and #2 on the Billboard 200. The 2011 album with BSB made it to #7, and only had two new songs. I was at one of their 2009 concerts and there were more than just fans my age from back in the day. (FYI the first time I saw the New Kids on the Block was 1989.)

  138. “No servers are crashing for them. No votes are getting flooded. And
so, they’re not having as big an impact as we thought they might, but
we’re not surprised.” The average Shinhwa Changjo is in their mid to late twenties, to mid thirties. The majority of them are married and raising children. They’re priorities have changed, but that doesn’t mean they love Shinhwa any less, and Shinhwa knows this. So the fact that none of this is happening, even on the korean charts, honestly doesn’t bother the fanclub or Shinhwa. It doesn’t make them any less legendary, or popular. I don’t mean this disrespectfully, I really just wanted to tell you guys this because I didn’t know this until I spoke with a Shinhwa Changjo personally.

    • And it’s not like some men in their 30s are so concerned about having more teenage girls “in love” with them lol. So, no showing off abs, no lip(..what was that term again?…gosh), and other things. They came back for their devoted fandom, and they have for sure way more Korean fans that any other new group.

    • saanrio

       THIS, so much.

I have four kids, so I’m not constantly voting, however, all of my kids know who Shinhwa are by their music, they all LOVE the MV, and the youngest (four years old) sings along with the songs on a regular basis.  (Though, yesterday, he did come up and say “No, no Venus, I want Tick Tack!” — He is a UKiss addict. lol)

So, loving this song and video, loving this comeback, spent more money on the limited edition of this album than I have on anything since 2009 when I bought Tohoshinki’s The Secret Code, and I could not be happier with my purchase. :)

Just because the teens and early twenties on this site don’t get Shinhwa’s appeal, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.  They are legends for a reason.

    • I’m 26, and neither married nor with kids. But I’ve been a fan since 2001 when I was 14, I literally grew up in the fandom, wasting away my highschool years in the SHCJ forums… Shinhwa was the kpop group I taught myself Photoshop for so I can make wallpapers/icons/banners/graphics to show my support…

I have since gone to college and now a registered nurse. Dont have that luxury of time to sit & keep voting like a crazed young fan anymore, but that doesnt mean my live for my oppas have diminished. Venus is damn catchy and It Hurts is just fuckin amazing –

I’m so glad that Shinhwa’s doing this comeback for their loyal “orange princesses” Mad respect right there.

      •  Agreed. I don’t think Youtube counts or stats on this site can be an accurate indicator of Shinhwa’s popularity or the excitement that surrounds their comeback. The demographic of EYK fans is not necessarily reflective of all kpop fans. What about other statistics, like how quickly their comeback concert sold out? I think that definitely reflects how excited people were to see them back.

        • We’ve always been interested in the international community’s reaction to Kpop, and not in Korea’s reaction to Kpop, so we’ll continue to use YouTube stats and our site stats to form our opinions.

This site is for foreigners, with Korea representing only 10% of our audience.  We don’t write this blog in Korean, nor do we speak Korean in our videos.

Also, please note where the video is located: the KpopCharts Update, in which we talk about what new Kpop videos have been added to the charts, and give people a chance to vote for them for Music Mondays.

Maybe we didn’t make that clear enough?

        • k pamarii

i don’t care what you(S&M) think about shinhwa but the way you are ignorant of Korean language in that video is quite annoying, considering time you spent in Korea – that was just a very, very bad joke. well, no cure for stupidity i guess.

      • im 23, and me and my three friends are all shinhwa fan. =) youtube views or rather eatyourkimchi vote for shinhwa is not much because back then when shinhwa is popular, Hallyu wave has not really started, they start the trend, but left it to the younger generation as shinhwa members left for army.

  139. thisisjustforfunval
    thisisjustforfunval

Am I the only person having problems with the playlist? Yesterday and today it either playlists the MV videos or Simon & Martina’s review (in other words skipping the vid inbetwee). I have to open the playlist and go back. Or maybe YouTube has lost its mind…I believe it is the later.

  140. I’m freaking excited about Shinhwa’s comeback! It’s true that they won’t probably get as much hype as BTOB or EXO or some other new groups because they’re so “old”. But what you say almost makes it sound like people little older than what k-poppers are nowadays (geez, some of them are like… 15?) shouldn’t make music in Korea anymore? Like what? I definitely would like to see for examble DBSK making a comeback and music even after their military service…

But yeah… Shinhwa are legends. And they do have people who are veeery excited about their comeback. Like me. And no, I’m not old. I’m 17. And no, I’m not Korean. And no I haven’t been in k-pop for like ten years, but three. But I think long enough to know how legendary they are.

Yup. Going to vote for Shinhwa. The song is freaking epic.

    • Wow…i feel like you just took my kpop life and age and typed it out…it’s so creepy…XD

Anyways i agree i barely know Shinhwa, but once i heard how amazing they were i couldn’t help get excited for their comeback. And i was defiantly not disappointed with what i saw and heard

  141. Well, as you mentioned the Shinhwa fanbase is very different. In Korea, many of their fans are people in their late 20s or 30s who have jobs, families and other commitments, and may not have the time to vote or crash servers. As for international fans, the fanbase is quite limited because by the time “Hallyu” truly took off, they’d gone off to the army. But as a fan of the group, I am definitely overjoyed that they are back. :)

    • That’s very true.  I think our KpopCharts don’t reflect a band’s universal appeal, but just the tastes of our audience.  For example, how did 2AM beat SHINee yesterday?  2AM’s video is barely making a dent on our charts.  But it seems like the Korean audiences here feel more strongly towards 2AM…while our audience is primarily outside of Korea.

  142. Your viewers/fans are primarily non-Korean fans, the majority of whom didn’t get into kpop until after Shinhwa’s time, so it makes sense that they’d freak out over newer groups more.

  143. the way simon says “shinhwa” reminds me of stewi “cool whhip”

    =_=

oh and i think BTOB is pronounced BEETOB ^^

  144. Anyone else notice that it says BAOOTBA instead of BATOOBA? xD And I kinda agree with you guys about the SHINHWA thing, I guess it just depends on you? :P

  145. tuhina_22

haha I think CN Blue filmed the Hey You MV while they were here in LA for their concert with FTI :) I can totally see you two in that video being all awesome and funky though! you could do it way better than any of them actually did ;D

oh god… Batooba. cannot unsee. cannot unhear. I LOVE IT.

  146. BTOB is creepy.
The voices (especially the rapper, you would think Junhyung made a featuring), the faces, the music, the fashion, the MV EVERYTHING looks like Beast.

  147. Karolina Oleś

    BtoB – isn’t it just simply ‘B to B’ ?

  148. BATOOBA! trololol.. i am not yet a fan, but i’m seriously fan of their new name.. BATOOBA slays!

  149. elerieC

    generation gaps I guess…

  150. WOOT FIRST ONE TO COMMENT!
well i absolutely adore shinhwa– they were  the start of korean idols (pretty close enough) and they did a great job in leading kpop culture! im so glad that they cam back! :)
