This is fantastic! I love the rnb sound. Not a fan of the breakdown though, it’s good and it does fit the plot really well, but it’s just too different from the rest. It’s too bad, this would instantly be one of my favourite songs of the year otherwise!
The video is outstanding. Nothing I could say would give it justice. A masterpiece.
This definitely comforts me into thinking that 2014 will be a terrific year for Kpop. I can’t wait to see what Infinite has up their sleeve.

  5. twinklehome02

yay we’re at second first is normally snsd but its reviewed so 2NE1 is first now yay so HAPPY for the girls~^^

  6. Docrobei Han

    2NE1 2NE1 2NE1 2NE1!!!!!!!!

  7. I hope this MV gets to K-Pop Music Monday!! 2NE1 IS AMAZING!! The first time I saw I thought it was INCREDIBLE!! The acting, the song itself, and the story almost brought to tears such an amazing song & mv it would a waste not reviewing it.♥♥♥♥ 2NE1 IS THE BEST!!!♥♥♥♥

  8. MagnoliasInBloom

This video is absolutely amazing. I love the story line, which reminds me of the matrix. I also love the costumes and the bad ass attitude that is portrayed. But it’s not just an “I’m a bad ass for no reason” vibe. Its a directed anger/frustration/sadness towards technology and how it can make you lose the personal touch and intimacy with people you love. Also I greatly enjoyed the chorus break down. Over all super excited about this video.

  9. Tam

    EEEYYYYYY GUYSSSSSS PLEAAAAAAASSEEEEEEEE
    THIS MUST BE KMM ;____;
Why is SNSD even still first though

  10. pikachus

This has higher stats than Mr Mr but is in 2nd place? This MV was later too wasn’t it?

  11. Sherwin Atienza

PLEASE MAKE A REVIEW TO THIS. Because this songs is a beyond-KPOP song! SO great!

  12. RoyalAces21

I get this Hunger Games feeling in the MV, especially during the dining scene. This is probably one of my favorite 2NE1 MV as of yet, and I didn’t even like the song initially because I thought the beat drop was weird. But after listening to this song over and over again, and watching this MV, I can’t help but fall in love this song. Hell, CRUSH was such an awesome album as a whole and personally, it’s the best album to have come out in a while. I’ve got the entire album on replay for a week now and I’m still not sick of it. :)

  13. ShineShimmerSplendid

It’s hard not to appreciate the efforts YGE and the girls put into this album. It came out beautifully and wonderfully!

  14. Gia Goertzen

I really like the video, well at least most of it. The song is great, although I’m not one hundred percent sold on the few different parts mashed together. It’s definitely growing on me though! Double 2ne1 music monday…I hope so! :D

  15. LiliRock2000 .

OMG love this song, 2NE1 and the vid. This has to be on k-pop music Mondays

  16. glennni25

review ofr kpop music monday coz they give kpop a new meaning and achievements for they are number 61 in us billboard for a album debut for just a week i mean few days…

  17. Regencyera

    I hope this wins!

  18. Ary Yamgotchian

I got the meaning perfectly the moment i watched this video because I’ve read a lot of authors like GIllez Deleuze and Foucault that talk a lot about opression and control through cameras and all sort of technological devices. Also, Esther Diaz talks a lot about how people live in cave-like worlds, always on-line. It wasn’t confusing at all, I really loved it <3 2ne1 fighting!!!!

  19. LongClawTiger

Love the images in this video. It tells the story as much as the song itself does. So much material here to review. I really hope this gets picked. That being said, I hope they do videos for “Crush”, “MTBD”, and “Scream” at some point. Those three are my favorite tracks so far from what is a, start to finish, great album!

  20. Tuwa Liking
    Tuwa Liking

Ok, when I first heard the song I felt like it was missing a story/ message(?if you will) to be conveyed. It just didn’t grab me as much and felt like the old story of lost love and wanting it back. BUT then I saw the MV and was like WOW! It hit me.
I think it completed the experience so to speak? And I oh so celebrate CL’s “Naege dorawa”-part XD

    QUESTION TIME:
So what do you think of the story?
After reading YG’s comment on how people nowadays, seemingly, tend to prefer their phones to communicate instead of looking at the person across the table and speaking to them?

-I admit: I still get up from the table to use the phone when I’m out for a drink with my friends or avoid using it at all.

  21. Hoàng Quốc Huy

    Love 2NE1 <3

  37. Blueberries

Did you guys know that CL wrote many of the song in the album? For some songs she wrote lyrics, for some she wrote lyrics and composed the song :D She wrote lyrics for Crush, If I were you, MTBD, Scream and Baby I miss You. She composed Crush, If I were you and Baby I miss You with Choice37/Dee.P/Peejay. I think she did awesome job.. I’m so proud of her :D

Come back home literally meant to come back to reality.

  43. Bonchie07

  45. Vanessa V

THIS VIDEO. OMG. BEST THING THEY’VE EVER MADE!

  46. Rachelle Anne Villanueva Hayak

    lets break this down.

  47. allen273

Too much plastic surgery. I can barely stand to look at them. Cool video, though.

    • Blueberries

Only one’s with PS are Bom and Minzy though.. and for Minzy it’s only nosejob. Majority of kpop idols have some kind of plastic surgery done though so it’s nothing new with 2NE1.

  48. krysellia

i think this should be on kmm. they might compare 2NE1 and snsd though.

  49. Roxandria

Stunning, a music video with strong plot, gosh I missed these. <3

  50. YunYiWon

    This MV is perfection !

  51. Sweetie

Okay, I have been OBSESSED with this song since I first heard it last night. It’s so catchy and it’s also emotional.

Right when I first heard the light pitter patter electronic beat when the song started I knew I’d love it. It was weird in a twisted kinda way; kinda like the way a music box playing during a solemn scene in a movie feels. If that makes sense. The song started right off the bat with a beat that tugged on my heart strings for some reason. Like a sad futuristic feeling…

At first I felt like the dubstop in the middle of the song and the song “mashup” thing was a bit weird, but now I’ve gotten used to it and it’s continuously growing on me. But I love how the song mashup MATCHES what is happening in the MV. The dubstop plays when they enter/exit the “Virtual Paradise” in the video, so it works with the whole feel of warping into a virtual world. The other parts really seems to fit like perfect background tracks for the scenes happening at the moment (capturing the emotion during the scene as well).

Also, the MV itself looks so high quality and it’s just so pleasing to the eye to watch.

One of the few things that sill bothers me, though, is the badly edited lip-synchs lol. But 2NE1 seems to have this problem with a lot of their videos. Perhaps they should hire someone to fix that at this point, lol.

P.S. Did Bom’s eyes looked like anime eyes in some of these scenes, or was it just me? lol

  52. lets be honest here, im almost certain this vid will be reviewed next week, so maybe we should work on happy getting it to the top 3 so maybe theyll do a double for 2ne1?

  53. Someone

I’m so glad theyre finally back! Im in love with this song!!!

  54. James Kilgore

This is the first time I have seen a plot centered 2NE1 music video and I am very impressed. While I had to read a couple of the explanations below to get all of the details, there were no real surprises in what the story was and what was going on in the video. The music I really like with how it uses a Caribbean beat, the electronica breakdown, and instrumental/vocals. I haven’t seen the English lyrics, but it does seem as if the musical transitions are timed very well with the story of the video.

    • Nova_REMIX

The first time? 2NE1 had plot-centered videos since “IDC.” Dara’s “Kiss” had a plot. Bom’s “You and I” had a plot. “Go Away” had a plot. Bom’s “Don’t Cry” was continued on from “You and I.” They’ve had plenty…

      • James Kilgore

How on earth did I forget about those! Oh my god! Words cannot describe the embarrassment I feel. Especially since 2NE1 is one of the first Kpop groups I started following.

        • Nova_REMIX

Lol It’s okay!~ It was probably the awesomeness of this comeback that made you forget for a little bit.

  55. Calida Li

I really love this song! the mv was edited by Papa YG himself – I had me idea he could edit like this!

  56. KGirl .Diaries
    KGirl .Diaries

Guys!!! Maybe if we manage to get happy into the top three with comeback home, S&M will review them both for KMM!!!!!!!!

  57. bbissou

    THE SLAYAGE THAT IS 1080P
    thank you YG, thank you

  58. BlackjackVip

I love 2ne1′s new album it’s so fresh and extraordinary. I love the reggae feel to the song and the acoustic mash-up was pure genius. If you watch the mv and read the English subs you will see how the mv is specifically made for the lyrics, and they didn’t just put in the acoustic part for the hell of it.

Any who I found a wonderful link explaining the mv in detail. I thought I would share it for other curious viewers.
    http://kpoptimeout.tumblr.com/post/78423890849/k-pop-mv-meanings-2ne1-come-back-home

Enjoy and I can’t wait to watch this on KMM. I hope Simon and Martina do a detailed review of this mv.

  74. Arran Fletcher

    MINJIA!!! SO PERFECT!! <3

  75. double KPMM with this and happy?

  76. Gracie グレイス

Don’t know if it’s just me but in the chorus I was expecting it to be a little more… UMF-y-ness (it’s a word : ). I don’t really know but I wanted more “something” in the chorus. I love the 1.30~ mark though and the 1.50 mark. Unexpected at first but blends well with the rest of the song :D

  77. YGLover <3

I really love how in this whole AON/Crush thing, as usual all the members look tough, but Bom looks pretty badass too! Usually, everyone looks fierce, but Bom is the cute/pretty one. I love them either way, but I definitely like this a lot!

  78. Maricar Silvano

we want to see this on k-pop music monday! Dara’s scene in the mv is consistent until the end if you see her expression while they are in the tunnel and she is holding that bat and ready to battle, she really wat to destroyed the virtual paradise! she’s so good at acting.

  79. So gooooooood! i love it!

  80. ShineShimmerSplendid

it made me really think! And that’s rare in a kpop vid!

  81. Hamlin Lu

    THAT BEAT DROP THOUGH.

  82. YukiRed
    YukiRed

It’s familiar to what SNSD did with “I Got A Boy” and i still don’t like that song lol (I like some parts, but not the song as a whole)

Also I don’t know what 2NE1 sounds like anymore. I know they’re going under some evolution, but I don’t know where they stand right now. From this MV I felt like 2NE1 could easily fall apart as they didn’t share anything. Adding the ’5-in-1 songs’, no shared lines and barely in the MV together (even the characters were hard to understand what they meant to each other) and it felt like ’2NE1′ is not their name anymore, but CL, Minzi, Dara, and Bom.

Is any one else getting that vibe?
I guess I’m too used to 2NE1 having a really distinct and often times the in-your-face attitude.

Also I wished they hadn’t added the spray paint AGAIN. ‘UGLY’ was enough spray paint for all kpop =_=

    • Puckish Rogue

The MV is a mix of CBH and CBH Unplugged. There actually is two versions of the song in here. That is why it gives an IGAB impression, but it isn’t.

And no. I am definitely not getting that vibe. Mostly coz this is one song, and this is how it sounds best. Heck, they harmonised the entire second half of Missing You so no shared lines here is not that big of a deal. Although I do admit that the MV definitely could do with a script and about 3 seasons.

    • Blueberries

I see the CRUSH album.. not this song only but whole album as 2NE1 going back to their style. Come back home’s electrobeat and reggae feel.. it reminded me of 2NE1′s previous songs, they have done reggae versions of many songs before. CRUSH was like I’m the best, not too similar but same vibe. I feel like in this album 2NE1 gave all that they got, from soft ballads to elektropop, hip hop and pop. Happy’s mv reminded me of Lonely’s, nice fashion and girls just walkin in the city, simple but pretty. Come back home had references to Ugly and I’m the best (baseball bat) and gave out really nice story.

So somehow this comeback and the album just felt completely right for me ^^; It’s the 2NE1 I’m used to.

  83. 2NE1BITCHES

LET’S VOTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I need this on KMM. Lol XD

  84. Ignis Invictus

If 2NE1 wins for Come Back Home, can we just have a double KMM?

  85. pumpkin_spice
    pumpkin_spice

Dara’s acting is so on point in this mv and I love the plot and how the breakdown has the little triply animation. IT IS BEAUTIFUL.

edit: can next week’s Music Monday just be a super 2NE1 edition? please because both mv’s are pretty amazing even though it is clear that this one is the better of the two :)

  86. This song is absolutely great. Sososo addicting. Especially Dara’s part, and then beat drops, and CL’s ‘Come back home’. On the downside COME ON 2NE1, YOU’RE LEGIT NOT EVEN TRYING TO MATCH THE WORDS UP TO YOUR LIPS. Personally, it takes away from the video. I can help but watch and be like ‘THAT’S NOT EVEN CLOSE GODDAMIT’

Director: Come on guys, at least TRY to sing with the song

    2NE1:

    • Rainiekow

From the looks of it, they are actually lip syncing correctly it’s just that the scene is edited with a slow motion effect. Lol I thought the same thing too though, and was really starting to feel concerned about YG artist when I saw GD doing it in his MVs.

    • Cecilia Avila
      Cecilia Avila

I don’t think it has to do with them (the artists) not being able to lip-sync with their songs. This seems more of a problem that comes on after the editing is done. It seems like they slowed down the video a bit which caused it to not sync with the audio anymore.

  87. Let’s go!! 2NE1!! <3 NOLZA!!

  88. Ortodoxu

This needs to be on K-pop music mondays for several reasons:
    1) No reaction to 2ne1 – Missing You
    2) beastly album that continues to wreck all the charts
    3) awesome song, together with happy
    4) that vid tho…
    5) no seriously, that video, 470k for pure awesomeness

  89. Ceci Lee

Love the song and the MV concept. Definitely has to be next KMM.

  90. Kaajsaas

I’m in love with this song, MV and their new album. <3

  91. bbarnavi

Four Korean pop stars commit terrorist acts in virtual world, murdering dozens of citizens and inciting violence. Details @ 11.

  92. i am me

This could almost have been a great song but the part at the 1:25 mark just ruins it for me. This was their least impressive video in my opinion.

  93. so proud to be a blackjack!! As always!

  94. Justin Peterson

Love the Sci Fi feel to the Video, don’t really see it too much in Kpop

  95. Like I said… I personally had understood why the video took so long. Their reasoning behind the short delay was justifiable this time around. Wow. What a perfect video and comeback song. The CG was very VERY well done and it managed to tell a story without the MV having to be 20+ minutes long or without having to explain step by step what is going on. You get a feel of what the overall story is and still have room to build your own background to it. It was brilliantly done and I enjoyed it. The girls also looked beautiful doing it and I liked that it wasn’t just a video. Dara also did unsurprisingly well with her role. Basically, this is an amazing video to an amazing song from an amazing album. Bravo, YG! You did it again!!!! <3

This was very reminiscent of films like The Matrix and Minority Report and a couple few that I can't really remember right now, in which they live in a Dystopian kind of society/future where a virtual reality exists outside of their own. The one in this world is aptly named Virtual Paradise and it's a place where people can get away from their reality and find refuge in a fake world which caters to their desires. Dara's husband is addicted to this and, from what I took of it, is deteriorating physically as a side effect from it's constant use (or uses the virtual world to escape his sickness, which he grows addicted to and constantly seeks solace in it but ultimately leaves Dara behind to watch him die as he spends his shortening life without her leaving her to yearn for him to come back home). Outside of this storyline is a separate storyline which connects with it in where CL is a leader of a group of rebels that try to find a way to destroy the virtual world, with Dara's involvement being motivated by her situation with her husband. Whenever they enter that world you know because of the trippy CG animation scene. The virtual world is when they're dressed in black and initiate the riot which is then mirrored at the end in the giant screen.

What I loved about this was how the storyline was very easy to follow while leaving room for interpretation of it in terms of the backstory and what is going on. It wasn't just rebellion against the government or rebellion against the machine and the industry, like how other groups do it or try to attempt to do it. This had a lot more depth to it and I enjoyed it very much.

    • Laura Aguilar

I just wanted to point out too that the second time we go into the “come baby baby” part, the virtual warp is getting destroyed. I thought that was really cool.

Also the part I really like is when CL is rapping, she looks at Bom and Minzy, and they look at her. However when she sees Dara she stops rapping. It’s as if she’s seeing a new face in the “rebellion”. That whole scene is so sad because it’s like they each have their reasons for being there. And with the instrumental part in there, ugh just so sad.

      • Just like someone pointing it out below, and the rap translations. CL stopped rapping when she sees Dara is also how the rap contents seems to be about Dara’s situation.the sight of her would’ve pulled some heart strings ;_;

      • I don’t think it’s her seeing Dara as the new face of the rebellion, but as her knowing what it is Dara is going through and her reasons for being there are as she works diligently. It coincides perfectly with CL’s rap which is why I think they added it in there and why she looked at her with such a sorry expression. But you’re right, that scene struck a chord with me too. It’s one of my favorites in the video.

    • phoenix_fire

you’re so right that the video leaves a lot open to interpretation. for example, i agree with a lot of what you said but i think that rather than being addicted to virtual paradise, dara’s husband went to it because he was in so much pain because of his handicap, and i think the medicine was pain meds for his arm. when he’s shaving his head, it’s because he’s preparing to enter virtual paradise for the first time.

also, i think that the breakdown (the trippy animation part) isn’t them entering the world, but rather is the message they’re sending to everyone in virtual paradise to log off and come back home. almost the same footage is used at the beginning of the sequence, which indicates it’s almost the same message being sent out.

the great thing is, we could both be right! that’s why this video is so amazing.

      • I think it is being addicted to the virtual paradise though, and that’s why they want to bring it down so bad. YG said it himself that this video represents the current generations addiction to technology, and the situation with Dara and her husband is a reflection of that. Everyone has their reasons for going into the virtual paradise, but his specifically is to use it as his outlet to escape his pain. You can even see it in the opening sequence when he’s in Dara’s arms and the commercial to the Virtual Paradise comes on, he moves away from her as if wanting to be there at that moment as if he were yearning for it. You can see from how the girls go into the world that you don’t need to shave your head to do so. I think he does it as a way of accepting his fate before wanting to spend his final moments there. And then Dara pulls the plug on him before finally destroying the world with the rest of the girls.

    • @phoenix_fire
Interesting take on the guy being sick, the crude way of meds taking made most think its drugs, another popular way to escape. But there is more reasons to escape that being in pain, they look poor too. But to forsake your partner and give up. Unforgivable!

  96. Like I said… I personally had understood why the video took so long. Their reasoning behind the short delay was justifiable this time around. Wow. What a perfect video and comeback song. This was a great video. But yg for some reason still has a problem synchronizing 2ne1′s songs with their lips LOL
    Forever a problem.

    • Marilyn Rodas

I feel like that is a “staple” when it comes to 2NE1′s videos. If the day comes when they actually sync, I’m sure that’ll be all anyone talks about. XD Stil, the lip syncing never bothered me.

      • If you notice though, this is something they only do with their slower/ballad songs. All of their dance tracks don’t have this, come to think of it neither did Missing You. The lack of sync, like how they did it for Lonely and now this song, makes sense to me, but it’s hard to explain. Because the audio is like a second faster than the actual movement in the video it makes it seem more like trying to emulate an inner monologue rather than a direct one, which is also why they choose to lip sync certain words rather than all of them. Like I said, it’s hard to explain.

    • its not just 2NE1, its pretty much everyone in YG: aka Lee Hi, BB, and even Epik high sometimes

  103. Nihel Trabelsi

I actually wasn’t expecting a sci-fi MV with in depth meaning into it! BRAVO 2NE1!!
thnx YG for not making a common random MV like crying over bunch of boys…
I loved the message behind come back home – unplug and get out in the real world!!

Dope Music and Breath Taking MV itz just very unique & special in the whole KPOP industry …. it should be on KPOP MUSIC MONDAYS

  104. Sutherland Carter

This and Happy needs to be in KMM!! I LOVE IT SOO MUCH!!

  107. lolasama

Enjoyable to listen and watch. The music video made sense. The rapping was a little meh for me. I’d personally enjoy a much suble type of rap for this particular song; it came off a little too powerful but it fits with the general message of the song and respresent the conflicting feeling so it wasn’t too bad. Overall I enjoyed this song.

    • The rap isn’t actually part of the original Come Back Home, it is only in the unplugged version but yg added it in mv. Personally I was meh about it too at first but the rap translated into english made it more i can’t describe it but intense and sad and it just fits so perfectly with dara and her ‘boyfriend’ in the mv and idk.

Anyways, here is the translation of Cl’s rap:

The one thing left here is your shadow
My yearning for you is torturing me more than my loneliness
The sound of your laugh has me wrapped around your finger
Our moments together fell apart lifeless like a sand castle
They paralyze me every single night
Even in my dreams I call your name
Even though the things in front of me are changing with time
The one thing that won’t change is that
I am your queen, you’re my ruler

I was so happy with both mvs and the album. When I first heard this song, I was like oh sounds like go away, and then that dubstep with cl and dara. my face went 0_0. Very good mashup. I wonder if the eatyourkimchi crew is going to evaluate snsd and 2ne1mvs at the same time.

  110. Erica A.

HOLY CRAP.. I love this MV, totally debak!

..I still can’t get over the two places in the song where it goes all ..idk techo-y? (the come baby baby parts)
That’s just a personal preference though, and I’m sure lots of people love that aspect of it lol >.<"

  114. blah blah

i hope they wait a week and do a 2ne1 vs snsd edition! sorry im evil
the song is growing on me but why you use so much auto tune? i hate it!!! especially in the first part of the song its so ugh. but the video had a really interesting concept and it looks like a 2ne1 video that i can’t see another girl group doing. the plot was a little hard to get though.

  115. I love it!!! It’s an awesome song with an awesome M/V!!! I hope to see it on your Kpop music Mondays!!!!

  116. THIS MUST BE ON KPOP MUSIC MONDAYS NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!!

  117. Tinghei Luk

I think this video is the best music video I have ever seen, the message and the setting are great!!!My Bom is so beautiful!!!

  118. sung lim law

I think S&M must have recognized the straight line drew by CL XD

  119. samantha f.

I nominated this video for the best use of song in a video. The Electronic voice being the Virtual Paradise world and the acoustic rap when CL is in the lab. The application of music in this video was some of the best I’ve seen in a long time, Kpop or otherwise.

  120. YG let a little insight on the MV.

YG: “The content could be a little difficult to understand, but keeping in mind that happiness in the real world is the most important will help the viewers understand the intentions of the MV better.” He added, “The MV of “COME BACK HOME” is set in a near-future city, and the concept is that people in this era prefer the virtual world over the real one, just like the movie ‘Matrix’.” “These days when people meet they look into the screens of their phones instead of having a conversation, which shows an addiction to cell phones and games. I think this behavior demonstrates that people like the virtual world. Even at playgrounds kids play with cell phones, and this will worsen in the future and people will be more enthusiastic about the virtual world than the real one.” He continued, “In the MV of ‘COME BACK HOME,’ DARA is heartbroken by a man she is in love with, as he prefers the virtual world. For these reasons, the four members of 2NE1, DARA, CL, BOM and MINZY enter the virtual world themselves and turn into warriors to destroy that world. Through this, we tried to convey the message of how important the real world is, and about the human touch.” He also explained why he leaned toward a music drama rather than a MV filled with choreographic scenes. He said, “2NE1’s MVs were mainly choreographic ones until now, so we wanted to try something new. We wanted to invest our time and money in the computer graphic work, which ended up in a 500 million won budget.” “I hope the viewers see the latest MV as a new challenge taken on by 2NE1.”

You would’ve thought it’ll be slightly cheaper since they can save on hiring an editor

  121. Minji Ri

I love this MV so much. I didn’t understand the first time I saw it, but it kind of becomes obvious after watching it some few times :D

  122. Khlaine Jhelsea Nunez Sillano

    Love it!!!

  123. Best kpop music video es expected my queens

  124. This mv has some deep meaning .. So mind blowing !!

  125. Agiza

Want want want!!! I want this clip on music mondays!!

  126. tweetpandora

I love that they did a different production for video, mix of acoustic and normal version. Love it. very imaginative MV

  127. Knookey

I like SNSD’s song better, but this video would be better for analysis.

  128. AngyeonghasAYOOOO

I love it but it kinda looses me when it gets all BA and electronic in that “Come Back Hooome” part. It sticks out against the feel of the rest of the song.

  129. I thought my unexpected love for Missing You was a one off thing, didn’t consider myself a 2NE1 fan, but again I’m surprised how much I like this song. I couldn’t take my eyes off the video even for a second, and now I’m commenting on this when I should be running to catch my bus. But hey, classes can wait a few more minutes :P

  130. i don’t care i need a full-review on this music video it’s gonna be good i can feel it in my bones!

  131. Lily Snape

Wow Wow Wow, I love it sooo much! It fascinates and disturbs me at the same time. It disturbs me because I can see this being a realistic scenario for the future if we don’t change our ways..people are already addicted to gaming and such. Gaming is fine but when you’re sitting their for 48 hours non stop, not even getting up to use the bathroom…uhm, you have a problem. In any case, 2NE1 shows us that we can break out of it. It chock full of symbolism just great. :)

  132. Maja Mya

    Its interesting ^^

  133. poodle

I didn’t immediately fall in love with the song, but the music video makes me like it more! What a neat concept, and so visually interesting. And bonus, the story seems reasonably deep!

GUYS! HEY! YOU HAVE TO REVIEW THIS!! FORGET GIRLS’ GENERATION!! GUYS! GUYS!!

  135. Maqui Samara

SO yeah because I’m so amazed at this MV I searched on what it means and the hell it is really deep.

I may not hit everything, but I hope this gets some to understand the video’s storyline a bit ♥

The music video starts off with a setting that looks like it came from a science fiction movie, with a blue virtual billboard that read, “Virtual Paradise”. Right away, I made a loud and deadpanning, “Oh” at the now seemingly obvious clue. I will go back to this later when we hit Actress Dara.

Next follows a shot of what looks like an abandoned lab or factory, with this very light and faint pink hue emitting from the corners of the shot. Notice that besides these colors, the rest are quite muted/desaturated, as if something has sucked the “life” in this world. Using some color symbolism, it’s safe to say that the current world that 2NE1 is in isn’t actually “paradise” after all.

The drums hit, and we are shown that the lifeless futuristic world has changed into a more chic and colorful version as Chaelin starts to sing, spray painting the wall with pink. It’s rebellious, but not as overtly so like 2NE1′s last spraypainting job in UGLY a few years ago.

Another cut to a young man’s hand twitching to…virtual glasses? That escalated quickly! Another cut of this small box that seems to be keeping this man in what looks like hibernation mode, but we might have a hint as to why.

After Minzy’s cut, we see Actress!Dara laying on the couch with the same dude hooked up like those guys inAvatar, holding each other, denoting that these two are lovers. The shot cuts to the TV running an advertisement of dun, dun, dun, “Virtual Paradise”!

Turns out that “Virtual Paradise” billboard is advertising a program that gives people the chance to be euphorically happy, even though it’s just a figment of your imagination + some cool ass technology. Sounds super cool, but as we see later, we realize it’s definitely, definitely not.

Knowing this, Dara looks back at her lover, her eyes spell worry.

Why? Cause her boyfriend is not necessarily the happiest person on Earth and is currently taking medications to alleviate his depression. Upon seeing the ad, he crushes his pills with a metal spoon as Dara sings “You said it was for my own good/and you turned away coldly like a lie”, which pretty much says, “Hey, I’m going to go do that Virtual Paradise program so I can truly be happy”. This scene also pans out to show all the grayness/desaturation, symbolizing not only the dystopian world that they currently live in, but also, their broken bond with each other.

Next, we see Minzy and Bom in the laboratory (with very vibrant blue!!) with scientific lab stuff without lab safety equipment (cause they’re too cool for that) testing something. The question remains: what are they testing? Is it new technology to make people go into a deeper artificial happiness or the opposite?

After some more solo singing shots, we see the guy shaving his head, which could symbolize a sincere apology in Asian cultures, or a sort of rebirth or transformation (even though the guy doesn’t turn out to build a meth empire). Either way, the shaving does not make Dara happy as she quietly cries at her boyfriend’s delusional dream to find eternal happiness, despite where it came from.

And then we get to the trap break, which I like to call, the very trippy/LSD part of the music video. CL, after wandering around, spraypainting shit, finds what might be a Virtual Paradise network hub and smashes it. The VP billboard wanes a bit before bright, flashing (and vibrant!!) images come up, showing CL and Dara repeating “Come back home” and the infamous “Come, baby baby, come come, baby”.

Looking at this part alone, we can see that “come back home” has double meaning. For one, the song talks about a girl asking her boy to return back to her and in the music video, given its context, ChaeRa is begging the people of this society to come back to reality (home), because being all high and happy is not really living.

After this, we see CL opening the doors (wow super bright light behind her I wonder what that means), delivering the rap in the unplugged version:

“The only thing left here is your shadow
My longing for you tortures me more than my loneliness
Seems like I can catch the sound of your laughter
But the moments weakly scatter like a sand castle
    Every night, I get nightmares
Even in my dreams, I call out your name
In a time where everything changes, the one thing that doesn’t change
Is that I’m your queen, you’re my ruler”

The lyrics definitely match the mood/theme of the music video, casually mentioning the root of the problem of this dystopian world. Everyone feels all alone and scared, and, rather than facing it and changing themselves, people decide to hide away behind an artificial mask of happiness.

During CL’s rap, we can see a looot of pink light in the laboratory, symbolizing unconditional love and affection, which has been said to be the solution of loneliness and purposelessness (x). With this, we can say that 2NE1 is fighting against the system.

In this scene, we also see trees for the first time, which symbolizes life (contrasting to the dullness and gray from the environment earlier in the music video). In fact, Minzy drives somewhere with the trees later on, with also a pink light emitting on her face.

We go back to the “happy” boyfriend, still lifeless in bed with his virtually perfect life as Dara stares on, perhaps jealous because he chose it over her or regret that she didn’t do anything about it or maybe even both. Either way, she comes up, wearing pink (!!!) and rips off the helmet off of her boyfriend to snap him out of the false reality that he’s made. The video left that subplot in ambiguity, not telling us if he died from that or if he woke up.

During this, we have cuts showing that wow, 2NE1 is also hooked up to the program as well, but instead of falling deep into the virtual world, is using it to break the system. Here, we are able to distinguish the real world (muted/desaturated colors and the fake virtual world (vibrant, colorful).

Moving on, we see Bom singing at a dinner (featuring white people wearing more white and goldheadpieces), reminiscent of Kanye’s Runaway short film dinner scene. Turns out this scene is Bom’s version of her perfect world. The world shatters as CL comes around again with her pink spraypaint and Minzy’s well-prepared molotov cocktails (???), looking very angry.

Aand the dinner gets destroyed and ruined by the fire and the pink plume of smoke. It doesn’t look that bad of course, considering that they’re doing this out of ~love~.

The trap part happens again and more calls for people to rise up and rebel against 2NE1 yay

Now we see a blue tunnel with the same pink smoke going around as many wake up from autopilot to join forces with the girl. They march on and on, looking all serious with the torches and metal bats. We get the last few close up shots with the members before we go back to the overview of the city burning in pink orange flames, showing the fucked up society has been overruled by love as the virtual world breaks down.

The camera zooms out as we see the real world not to gray and ew anymore, but gray with a bit of pink. 2NE1′s rebellion is a success as the world is all good again.

Ending comments: This video reminds me a lot about Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World with the whole futuristic dystopian society setting and also, the idea of people wishing to be numb from pain, believing that it’s better than facing the music. In a way, 2NE1′s Virtual Paradise is simply a revamp of the book’s soma,a pill that takes the user to a pleasurable and pain-free “holiday”. Like Huxley, 2NE1 fights against this, believing that by knowing and understanding pain, suffering and loneliness, can we really know what happiness and love is.

With influences from Avatar, Inception, and many other “escape reality” science fiction movies/books, 2NE1 does an amazing job of not only giving us an awesome music video, but making a comment about us and the world itself. Are we truly living or are we wearing our “Virtual Paradise” sunglasses?

Given that she’s singing ‘Come back home’ to them at that time, and moments later is walking by with those cocktails/fire things (XD) I would say it wasn’t her version of the perfect world, but more her asking/begging people to come back, if we go with the explanation you’ve given of the rest of the video.

    • Nice read!
      Made me think too

” The video left that subplot in ambiguity, not telling us if he died from that or if he woke up.”
Now if he DID die which seems to be the case with Dara’s acting.. that would hint the girls are sacrificing themselves when they chose to destroy virtual “paradise” by plugging in too.

“Here, we are able to distinguish the real world (muted/desaturated colors and the fake virtual world (vibrant, colorful).”
Interesting. In a way its like Coraline. And the white colourless people in it share similar meaning too.

    • Your post was too long, but it was worth it. Like 2NE1, the MV took some time before it was published, but it’s totally worth it.

I was also a little confused with the lab scene where Bom and Minzy were busy doing something. It took me some time before an idea sank into me: maybe they’re making a chemical as a substitute to the IV. The IV bags are always present whenever a person is using the technology. Since you’d be in a virtual world, you must need some nutrition, so the IV is important. Look at it closely, and you’ll notice that the fluid inside it is clear, and the bag has some electronic designs.

But, Bom and Minzy are mixing chemicals of a different color. What could be its use? Probably poison, or a medicine to wake these people up.

With this MV, I think this deserves a part II. Like an epilogue. :) It was really meaningful. Hands down, 2NE1!

      • 2NE1BITCHES

I think they made the things in the bottle on the dining part, to ruin the place. Think?

      • The hot pink (2ne1′scolour) is a weapon against virtual paradise. The spray can in the beginning, the gas bombs, the beacon flares.
At I think on the IV bags tho. Its connected to the headset not a part of the body. Its like CPU for this virtual device to “login”
        Well in a way, the guy seems sick. Hes on alcohol and drugs. Shaving head like he gave up on life itself breaking dara’s heart ;_;

Yg idols still hv prob with their jaw… wat da thing happen with their lipsync…

    • hironyx

the issue isnt with the lip sync, obviously music videos are not live, the fault is on the video editor, who was supposed to sync the scenes with the music.

      • yanagiba yusuke22
        yanagiba yusuke22

its not really the sync but how they lipsync is awful too…they just move their mouth a little but the voice that comeout is loud… im not bashing them but its quite disturb me when watching the mv

        • hironyx

ah, i get what you mean now.

        • Rainiekow

Those scenes are in slow motion that’s why it doesn’t match. YG’s editor must think it’s a cool effect or something( though I agree the slow motion effect is cool but it’s a bit irksome when it doesn’t match). It wasn’t too bad in this video, at least to me, since they focused more on story scene, but still .__.

I didn’t like the breakdown during the song UNTIL the video came out. Now it’s my favorite part.

I wasn’t expecting much. I’m glad to see 2ne1 have a really good single, and a great surprise video with Happy.

20 seconds in yells at screen “LIP SYNC WHY YOU NO SYNC!!” T_T
other than that hope Dara starts acting soon :)

  150. Such an awesome song and MV. Totally worth the wait! The reason why I love 2NE1 MVs is because they’re different from the regular kpop MVs. This totally should be reviewed next week, so much to talk about here :D

This video. This HAS to be reviewed like oh my god.

lol I wonder why they do the slow lip sync in some of their videos like this one, but then the Happy mv had perfectly fine lip sync.

  156. Akira Miyashi

The graphic quality of this MV is sooooo damn good!!! Such awesomeness in one MV!!!

I like the concept and imagery of this video, but I not a fan of the mismash songs. I don’t hate it, but will need a more listens to like. I definitely like the song Happy better. That all being said I’m so happy that these girls are clothed! I’ve gotten very tired of the “sexy” concepts from girl groups. Time for 2NE1 to bring the confident woman back!

    • phoenix_fire

i agree! it’s one of their best music videos, imo. the plot is actually pretty deep and it’s awesome the way the breakdown was incorporated into the plot of the video (and the fact that they repeated the footage of dara and cl makes so much sense). it’s just simply an amazing video.
