Sakura Food in Japan

Cherry blossom season is among us, and Japan has loads of ultra limited seasonal specials. We got our hands on lots of them and we’re trying them out in this week’s video. Though, I will say, Martina’s shoes aren’t a special that she will stop trying in a couple of weeks. It’s not like they will take the shoes back from her, while the Sakura flavored Starbucks, Baskin Robbins, and Pepsi are all going to be gone in a few weeks. And, to be honest, I really wanted Martina’s shoes for myself. They only make them in women’s though. I looked. I called the Nike Store. Why can’t dudes wear shoes with flowers on them, too? Those are totally badass shoes!

We tried some other Sakura flavored things that didn’t make it into this video as well. Red Bull has a Sakura flavored drink as well, and it, too, tastes better than the original. Doesn’t taste as chemically as usual. We also tried some Sakura flavored chips and holy crap were those awful. I don’t remember the name of them, though. We just got them and ate them and didn’t film it, but it was comparable to the Strawberry Curry flavor. Just nasty fruity ass.

And though Sakura flavored food and shoes (flavored shoes?) are already out, the Cherry blossoms are not out yet. They should be hitting Tokyo late March. We might be out and about at that time, now that I’m looking at our schedule. Ah! I hope we don’t miss it. Supposedly it gets really crazy the weekend that cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and people go to the parks super early to claim a seat for the day. I wonder if we’ll do the same. Hmm. Well, here’s a map if you’re in Japan and want to know when the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom:

Sakura Season Map

Hell, Sakura stuff should be all year round. It’s really great tasting, and it’s super pretty. If you get a chance while you’re here, try some of it out. It’s surprisingly great!

Otherwise, if you feel like some extra laughs, here are some extra scenes that didn’t make the final cut:

  1. I agree with Simon-Rose food is GROSS. But Martina, your gloves are AMAZING!!

  2. I really, truly wonder how many people know what the ‘I have some ice cream, I have some ice cream’ thing is from. That’s pretty darn old. I know you guys are around the same age as me, so that comedy show is even a little dated for us! It cracks me up every time you start singing it, because I like to sing it too.

[The show is ‘Eddie Murphy, Delirious.’ Eddie Murphy doing old ass raunchy and hilarious stand-up, from 1983]

  3. Hello Simon and Martina!! I’m new to this site and I love that I can find your first video here. I use to live in Japan and cherry blossom festival was my favorite. It was gorgeous. Tons of food and drinking under trees as well. I wish I could come back and meet you both. Have fun!!

  4. Hi Simon&Martina! I’ve been living in Korea for a while, and never visited Japan. You guys inspired me, along with a few others to go this year. So, in a few weeks I hope to be in Fukuoka! But I need to know: MARTINA WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR SNEAKERS?!?!?!?

  5. Hello Simon and Martina! sakura season is my favorite! *o* i don’t actually live in a country with sakura season but either way, the other day i saw the most amazing episode in this Iidabashi Station and the Kagurazaka Hanten (神楽坂飯店) this restaurant known for its jumbo gyoza and other food challenges!! and in one of them you have to eat lots and lots of ramen! *o* (well is just 3 dishes but is a lot!) maybe Simon could try to beat this challenge! if you go by train you have to get off in the 1 stop on the Oedo Line subway.!

  6. I cannot get over how nice it looks in Tokyo right now. Like…I know Martina said it’s freezing, but it’s still snowing like two to three times a week up here in Sapporo. I’m so jealous…I’m sick of all the snow!! TT^TT
On the subject of the sakura items, the only ones I’ve tried were the Starbucks drinks…and for me they were way too sweet! I tried both the latte and the frappucino with my roommate, and while she loved them I couldn’t drink a full one myself. I ended up giving her mine and she drank both of them…maybe it was because there was no espresso in it. I’m not sure. But now I want to go out and find the pepsi and the ice cream….

  7. Here in Southern Oregon the big tittilicious excitement is all about Pear Blossoms, with parade, festival, pageant, etc.

Martina would make a good Pear Blossom Princesses (queen sounds too domineering).

  8. The picture in my avatar is from Nanjing, China, circa 2006 during their Plum Blossom Festival. Finding a place in the park on Zijin Shan by the Ming Xiaoling Tomb to take a picture on a decent day during that time without having other people in the background is very difficult: lots of people want to be out and about among the plum blossoms.

    Thank you

  11. Oh man. I’m going to scour my local Asian grocery stores for any sakura-specialty imports, now. Have you found any sakura mochi?

  12. I live close to Washington, DC so there’s always a hubbub around cherry blossom season. They have a huge festival and everything. No pretty Starbucks special lattes for the occasion though. Boo!

Question for you guys! On your bikes there’s a bar on the back tires that’s maybe 6 inches off the ground. Maybe I’m just sheltered but I’ve never seen that before. What’s it do? Why it be?

    • While watching this I wondered if Starbucks made the cherry blossom flavor available in the DC area. Thanks for answering that question! It seems like they’re missing out on an opportunity there.

    • That bar on the back of the bike’s tire is a kick stand – it keeps the bike upright when you stop & go away. Most of the ones I’m familiar with are the leaning version that pop out from one side only – their version is slightly sturdier.

      • Oh! And if you re-watch the video, you’ll see Simon pop his kickstand up – putting words to action!

  13. Guys! It’s been years since I commented but here I go again! I loved this video and I just wanted to say that I personally prefer these type of shorted individual videos to the half and hour Eat Your Sushi episodes. I just find it easier to watch something short, and what I know the topic is about.
Anyways I think I’ve been following you for 6 year or something already and I am sooooo excited about your move to Japan!! Although I’m really into East Asia, I’ve never been that into Japan, but now I feel like I get to learn and explore through you guys! My favourites over the years have been the food videos, the house tours and all the weird everyday life stuff, but since I originally found you through the K-POP music mondays I wish you would do something music related as well. Especially since I think Japan has so much to offer on that area and I’m not that familiar with J-pop!
Anyways all the best to you, and I hope you enjoy Japan and making videos for year and years to come! <3 <3 <3

  14. Have you tried the more traditional Sakura flavoured things, like sakuramochi, sakura manjuu, sakurayu ? I had a go at making my own salted cherry blossoms last spring – didn’t quite work out …lol

  16. Super stoked because I’ll be in Tokyo/Kyoto for the cherry blooms this year! Leaving next week for a photography tour. :3
And yes, you should try to arrange an Ohanami session at a local park. Drinking and hanging out with friends under the bloomed cherry blossoms = awesome times my friends.

  17. MARTINA’S SAILOR MOON NAILS I AM DYING.
You should have tried a disgusting sakura mocchi they have in family mart (it has a ridiculous leaf on the top). It did not taste good, I think it was the only sakura themed thing I completely hated!

  18. You two looked so cold as you ate the sakura ice cream. And totally agree with Martina about why try same thing twice. Bunny ice cream was so cute though; how could u eat it. ;)

  19. I’ll be going to Tokyo next week and I’m excited to see the Sakura while I’m there for 2 weeks.

  20. Thank you for posting the cherry blossom forecast! It didn’t even occur to me to check when the sakura are in bloom. We are arriving in Tokyo a few days too late, so we might make a trip north to see them.

I live around Washington DC, so we have cherry blossoms trees that were gifts from Japan back in 1912. I’ve gone to see them a few times, but only once have there actually been flowers on the trees. A lot of time we end up with really rainy or windy weather, so they fall off the tree in just a couple days. Either way, those couple days are crazy busy with tourists in DC.

They also do a bunch of festivities in celebration of the cherry blossoms and of Japanese culture around that time. My friends and I try to make it to sakura matsuri, which is a big street festival with food, music, vendors, etc. A lot of people use it as an excuse to dress in cosplay, too.

  21. Was that your neighbor who you want to adopt Simon? Who showed you how to take care of your garbage?

  22. Aaah! I want to try the ice cream. I had some sakura jelly a few years ago, like jello jelly, and it was so good! It had a blossom in it. Was almost too pretty to eat to be honest!

  23. SOOOO COOLL!!!!

  24. I have been looking for those cherry blossom Nikes but they only sell the black and white version here! Why Nike why! ;_;

I would love to hear what you think of cherry blosson Häagen-Dazs (ice cream) by the way. And mochi, and kit kat and sake.. and… why not make another Sakura themed video? :’)

  25. So, they’re selling Pepsi Sakura on Amazon for $300+. Almost choked.

J-list has it too, but I don’t want to spend $15 on one bottle. They’re shipping’s outrageous. D:

    Looks good though! :3

  26. STRAWBERRY FLAVORED THINGS ARE MAH FAVORITE!!! So I’m thinking I would be a big fan of this. I really really want these!!! I’m especially jelly-jelly of the Starbucks the most.

So I have a question: Are y’all going to continue to do TL;DRs? And if so, are you going to keep doing Korean ones for a while whilst you learn more about Japan or are you going to jump straight into Japanese culture ones? (I guess that was two questions…)

  27. Oooh ! The neighbour ! We want more of neighbours !
I’m hungry, now. Not because of the neighbour, though.
