Seven Years in Korea!

As of yesterday, we’ve been living in Korea for 7 years. We now live in Seoul, but we first lived in Bucheon, so we decided to spend the day walking through Bucheon and reliving some of our favourite memories, and also remembering where we came from to where we are now.

It was a very emotional day for us. Things have changed so much. This little blog has become something a lot bigger than we had ever dreamed of, and so we wanted to remember what it was like before Eatyourkimchi became our careers. We remembered the restaurants we ate in. We walked through the locations of some of our silly skits. We stepped around the places Spudgy took epic shits. And we whirled through the entire day with stupid smiles on our faces.

When we first came to Korea we were teachers, and we made a lot of friends who were in our teaching circle. But all of them have since left Korea, back to the US, back to Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Wales, Australia. We sometimes feel like vampires, in a small way; Vampires live forever as they watch their friends and family die. Living in Korea for a long time makes you watch your friends leave your lives, potentially forever. We walked around and remembered where we met Steve, hung out with Jessica, drank with Jessie, ate with Matt. We felt the passing of time a lot stronger than usual. In Seoul we’re part of the bali bali lifestyle, and rip through every day doing tons of things, but it took us going back to Bucheon and speaking with ghosts of friends that we felt just how fast time has left us.

We made a small gallery of the places we often visited. The descriptions will tell you small stories about them as well.

Otherwise, thank you all for being with us on this incredibly bizarre life we live. A lot of you are very new to the channel, but we also know that there are some of you who have been with us for a long time. Thank you all, to viewers old and new. We hope we can keep you happy with our videos, and that you’ll keep watching us on whatever new journeys we go on. I don’t know where we’ll be seven years from now. I don’t know where we’ll be one year from now. Everything changes so quickly, and in ways that we never predicted.

One thing we will say, though, is that we really want to get back to more smaller vlogs like what we used to do. We’ve been on an editing kick lately, and really enjoy doing smaller videos like this. I’d like to try to get more up on our bonus channel. Hopefully you won’t mind if we keep spamming the site with videos. There are some videos that didn’t fit into this video, for either copyright issues or just for silliness’ sake, so we have them available on our app for iOS and Android. Check em out for some more lols :D

Thanks everyone. You’re all so Nasty! And very special to us. I’m all emotional and thinking about the meaning of life now. I’m gonna go drink a glass of wine and clean the house and try to get back to being normal. Normal, but still thankful :D

  1. I’ve never commented on anything here before, but had to make an account just for this.

I’ve been watching you guys’ awesome videos pretty much since the beginning, and it still feels like yesterday I watched the videos about Korean hand gestures, “dancing” traffic directors and you picking up Spudgy (and many more of course)!

Now, I’m not really a sentimental person, but watching this video put tears in my eyes, just from the joy of seeing you so happy and how awesome everything turned out for you – as well as the sentimental aspect ^^

After all, you guys have been a part of my everyday life for sooo many years now! Don’t really know what else to say (I’m bad at these things) but I love what you do and I hope you keep it up as long as you can! Spread the joy and open the happy~

Give Spudgy and Meemers a good pet from me! ^0^)/

    • Hey,

You’re not bad at these things. Your comment was lovely, and made me a little misty-eyed as well. I’m gonna go pet our animals now on your behalf :D

  4. I’ve been watching your videos since I discovered then I’m 2012, and it’s always a special moment when I sit down to watch a new one. If I have a bad day I will go and watch my favorites, or I will save up a live chat I’ve missed. Keep going and I will always be here, eagerly watching! Love love!

  5. TWONKLE DONKEY!!! XD

I am also very thankful. I check your site everyday and have since the beginning. I come here to see what new things you have up and to revisit older videos and just anytime I need some cheering up. As someone who suffers from depression sometimes, finding things that can help alleviate that is of the utmost importance. You guys are one of the things that works for me. So, thank you.

And I just want to say, as someone who has been watching your videos since the days of how to use you washing machine/ondol/what to pack, etc., I’ve seen you come out of your shells and become…I don’t know, more you, I guess. More comfortable in who you are and in expressing yourselves. Especially Martina. She was very reserved in the beginning. Not no more. LOL!XD Korea has definitely been good for you. Love you guys.

  7. Congrats guys! I enjoyed watching you guys over the last 2 and a half years. Its been defiantly nice to hear you guys give advise for traveling to Korea, and we can’t wait to come next year. You guys have really inspired us to come to Korea. So thank you for the videos. We never wanted to steer away from the traditional foods, and we now we have experimented with stuff that we can get, as well as the music and such!! So again thanks comes from you guys! With out those videos I would have never been turned on to Korea and its culture and etc. So keep up with the videos and Congrats with the anniversary and more happy years to come from Korea.

  8. Congratulations! Thanks so much for all you’ve done – ever since I lived in Seoul six years ago and discovered you, you guys have been inspirational and entertaining and educational. Thanks so much – may you both have many more happy years!

    • I will tell you that we can’t wait to come to Korea. Simon and Martina have turned us on to the food and destinations in Korea..

  9. Congrats, guise! I’m not so sure how I found out the channel, probably searching for Korean food. And what serendipity moment, I really liked. The food brought me here, but all the funny and corkyness made me stay. :)

    • That is the same thing that happened to me. I was looking for Sushi videos and ended up on Eat Your Kimichi videos and have not looked back sense.

  16. Yay, great video, makes me all nostalgic. I know you guys don’t do Music Monday’s anymore, but I did really enjoy those, especially back in the young and innocent days of kpop before too much craziness. Also, thanks for making me laugh all these years! You both have helped me through some hard times, just thought you should know…*hugs* :)

    So, thanks a lot!!!

  18. Thank you for the walk down memory lane! I’ve been watching your videos since you started doing Music Mondays. A long time! I’ve loved every single video you put out. It feels like we have had a developing friendship all these years, even though we have never met in person. I’ll see you two in Chicago!!!!

  19. I’m so proud and exited for you all! the EYK group has given us just as much as we have give you and its amazing to know that the people who kept me smiling through some of the hardest times in my life are still so humble and thankful. Love you all and will Be a Nasty forever! See you in Seattle in july

  20. Nooooo, Cheese Lady! How weird is it that it actually makes me sad to hear you didn’t find her again?
I’ve been watching you guys since…2011, I believe, during my first ever year away from my parents and my home country. At the time I couldn’t wait to leave Korea, because I had always wanted to live in Europe- I’ve done 4 years of that by now, and boy was I ready to come back to Korea by the end! Mostly because watching you guys’s videos over and over again made me realize just how much I love Korea, and how much I actually enjoyed growing up in Seoul…

I am now getting ready to start a PhD course this year, in Korea, in Korean Socio-cultural Studies. And I think your videos and blogs have played no small part in this. You guys have basically helped define my academic career, and I can’t wait to once again meet you at random at the You Are Here café, especially once I get that PhD title, so that i can give you all a big thank you hug! You’d better believe that, once I finally start teaching at a university, I’ll be showing your videos in my Korean culture classes.

Please continue making us smile and think wih your videos. We really appreciate all the work you put into every single one!

  21. Congrats on seven happy years together in Korea! Your videos are pretty much the best thing on the interwebs so I think I speak for everyone when I say that I hope you guys never stop.

You know, I’ve kind of had a sneaking suspicion your channel may be pivoting away from Korea in the near future, and in the past I would’ve been like, “NOOO! Who’s going to show me the awesomeness of the Motherland then?!” But not only I am now at peace with that possibility, I’m actually really excited to see what future adventures are in store for the both of you. You guys would still be the same lovably dorky hipster couple no matter where you went and I’d continue to watch your videos with enthusiasm all the same.

EatYourSushi/Dimsum/Pho/Curry/Adobo/Falafel/Lutefisk? Bring it on, my body is ready.

  22. what’s this dust in my eye? No I’m not sniffling. Awww thank you guise for doing what you do <3 All the flashbacks! :D

  23. Glad to have been here for 4 of the 7 years! I think my first EYK video was one of the earliest FAPFAP’s where Martina busted her ankle; those are probably my favourite because I love trying foods from different cultures and have really come to enjoy Korean food…and have to thank you 2 for that. <3

It was a pleasure meeting you guys at your last Toronto meet & greet; I was the girl that offered Martina my pack of Kleenex (and was wearing the Luna toque). I hope that someday I'll get to meet you guys again to thank you in person for all your videos…but this time in Seoul. :D

  24. Memorieeeeeeeees!!! I love these kinds of smaller random videos (not that I don’t love FAPFAPs cuz come one, sexy food porn shots are what make life beautiful) and definitely would be happy to see as many of them as you feel like throwing at us :D I can’t believe how long it’s been, that I’ve been watching you guise prance around Korea making awesome, hilarious, inspiring videos for about 5 years now. But part of me also can’t remember a time when I didn’t have Eatyourkimchi as part of my life. Passage of time is funny like that :P In any case, thank you for sharing all your amazing adventures with us, and I can’t wait to see what happens next^^b

  25. This is crazy. I thought I was one of the “newer” fans, but then I checked when I started watching your videos, and it was FIVE YEARS ago! I can’t believe it. It feels like such a shorter period of time, but I’ve loved it. I tend not to comment much, I don’t know why. I guess maybe I’m lazy, or maybe I feel like you guys have so many comments already, mine might just get lost in the sea ^^; But I would like to tell you now how much your videos have meant to me.

When I’ve had a crummy day or sad things were happening, I really looked forward to seeing the latest fun video from you guys. And, as time passed, it felt like I was watching friends instead of internet celebs, you know? And that sincerity that you still have is the reason why, after all these years, I’m still happy to keep up-to-date with you all.

I hope that you continue to be able to pursue fun adventures, wherever you are! And thank you for letting all of us, behind our screens, go with you.

  26. I really like that you showed a picture explaining that the cheese lady was gone :( because for some odd reason that was the question on my mind for most of the video.

I stumbled upon your videos only about 3 years ago, and so much has happened just in that time. It’s been great getting to learn about a country I didn’t ever give much thought to before 3 years ago. Excited to see more of your adventures!

  27. I’ve been watching you guys almost from the beginning. And something always stood out with your videos. You guys were always looking for things to appreciate and enjoy in your adopted country, rather than looking to come to terms with things that irritated you — that positivism has often helped boost my mood when I was down or stressed out. I remember your first video showing how to order food at your apartment, and the Heart to Heart and “Quilt Your Korean Map” makgeolli spot you guys did for Arirang TV.

Really happy to see you guys succeed, keep it coming and I’ll definitely keep watching!

  28. How the good times fly by so fast. I’be been watching you over the year and it’s amazing how you still capture are attention. Matina and Simon you are truly inspiring and wonderful peopl, don’t ever change. Thank you for taking us though your awesome life in Korea.

  29. From the first video I saw of you guys 4+ yrs ago, to meeting you guys in person twice when I was on exchange in Korea (once at the Hongdae park with all the other YouTubers where David Choi did a mini concert and another time at the first ever pop-up store at the EYK studio), it’s been an awesome ride and amazing to see the people who actually helped me a lot with preparing for my 6 months in Korea. You guys are truly inspiring and I sort of don’t like you right now cause all the videos and pictures make me really miss Korea and I am getting all fuzzy inside. I WILL GO BACK SOON!!, hopefully to see you guys again, maybe at the You Are Here Cafe which I missed out on because I had already returned to Australia. All the best and wish you guys continued success, FAPFAPS, WANKS, all all the corny acronyms haha

  30. Hello there Simon and Martina. It’s the Intern Will! :D I started to watch you guys’ videos since I was 18 and now I am a 23 years old University student who had an awesome experience with the intern program at EYK. You guys changed the whole world of mine into lovely Spudgy unicorn paradise and I am really thankful for that. I wish all the best for your upcoming year and forever and thank you so much for everything. :)

    • Will, thank you so much for being such a great supporter. We don’t see you often, but when we do we remember how long we’ve known you for. Thank you for all these years :D

  31. Been a fan for over four years now and still loving you guys. Keep doing what you’re doing because you rock. Congrats on the Korea-versary!

  32. I’ve been watching you guys for like 4 years, I think. I started the year before I moved to Korea, watched all through Korea, and now I’m in China and your videos often make me miss Korean food! I remember the night I finally found EYK studios in Hongdae when I was out drinking with a girlfriend, we were like shrieking in the street at 2AM because we finally found it! Your videos have just gotten better with time! Thank you for being so honest and transparent about your lives and letting us get to know you. You really are two incredible and amazing people. By the way, something I always wondered, you guys like Southside Parlor and I know you like words, but you never came to Wordsmiths, the spoken word/poetry/comedy thing that happens once a month at Southside. Why not? It’s totally fun. Anyways, cool video . :)

  33. Lo

    onion haseyo. HAHAH
I’ve been watching you guys since I was a high school senior. Now, I’m a university graduate and living/teaching in Korea myself. Time flies! Your videos always make me happy – so down to earth, both of you.

    • Holy shit! That’s so long. Thank you for letting us be a part of your life for all the years :D

      • Lo

Thank YOU for providing such awesome content! :) Hope to see you at You Are Here soon.

  34. Wow can’t believe it’s been seven years already! I remember watching you guys in the office tel (super small apartment) . It felt super homey and it still does! Thanks for letting us experience many things with you all!

  35. Amazing, isn’t it? I remember your video on “we decided to stay a second year, and here’s why”. We’ll be making our annual trip there soon, so will try to stop by your cafe at some point.

  36. I actually really thought about this just yesterday, about the whole passing of time and whatnot (I’ve been with you for 3-4 years, even if not actively commenting). It was sparked by a comment you guys made during your Jeju-video: It would be fantastic if you bought property and moved out there. Seriously. But then you’d have to leave behind everything you built in Seoul, and I don’t think Jeju is made for a schedule as crazy, colourful and fun as yours. But one day… one day :).

Eh, I’m typing nonsense. But I really love you guys and thank you so much for always being so positive, inspiring and fun-driven. I’ve contemplated my own way in life more than once, thanks to you.

    Here’s to many more years!

  39. Ever think of leaving everything behind and going back to your hometown?

    • Not any time soon, but I’d like to live in the Maritimes, once we’re in our 60s, and have a small Bnb where Martina wears an apron and bakes cookies for guests…but that’s still a long way away :)
