Speakers Corner: What Basic Skill Do You Lack?

This is a much more light hearted question for this weeks Speakers Corner. The question was, “what is a skill or talent most people have that you don’t have?”

This is a pretty easy one for me to answer since I think a lot of people have already seen it in our videos. I can’t seem to tear open plastic bags, even when they have that “tear here” line. I also can’t open milk cartons that are made from cardboard. If I try really hard and concentrate as hard as I can I can do it (sometimes) but it’s like I’m defusing a bomb. So much concentration! Hahah! Why did someone invent such a difficult thing to open when children usually get tiny cartons of milk? It’s like you’re trying to make life difficult for children. THINK OF LITTLE MARTINA AND HERE STRUGGLES!!!! THEY WERE SO REAL!!!

Simon lacks the ability to plug his nose when jumping in a pool. Seriously. I tried to teach him how to blow air out his nose while he lands so that water doesn’t go up, but he just splutters to the surface with all the pool water up his nose. I tried to teach him how to plug it while jumping in, like with his hand, yet still he manages to get water up his nose. Simon blames it on the fact that he has very large nostrils and that he can’t properly close them up but…I think he’s just adorable. He splutters to the surface all frazzled and trying to get the water out like a little kid. Hahhahhaha!

So, think hard…or maybe you don’t have to, and let us know what talent or skill you lack!

  1. Oh I see. Everyone can open up plastic bags and milk cartons but ME! *Martina runs away crying*

    • Oh ducky. You’re so endearingly incompetent! Come here, sugar booger!

      • Just cause I’m at home dying of the stomach flu for the past 8 days doesn’t mean I can’t learn to open plastic bags. :( *cough cough*

    • My dad can’t open plastic bags. So you’re not the only one.

    • So I’m just going to butt in and recommend Japan to you in that case. In Japanese supermarkets, there’ll be like damp sponges or cloth of some sort at the counter where you pack your groceries and stuff :E So instead of having to lick your fingers (gross) to open the plastic bags, you just kind of pinch the sponge or cloth and you’re good to open your plastic bag! Super convenient for us incapable people.

  2. I can’t drive. Well, it’s not that I can’t. I’ve taken lessons and I’m not horrible, it just causes me a lot of anxiety and I’m pretty frightened every moment I’m behind the wheel so I would really rather just not drive forever.

  3. Fun topic^^ and I too struggle so much with milk cartons: it seems pure luck when one opens right! But the weirder one for me is how much I struggle with keys. And I’m an artist with fine motor skills! They just ~ frustrate me. Happy day that I moved to Korea and now own zero keys!

  6. I wish I had a good sense of balance … I’m extremely clumsy if I get shaken up at all and I fall down really easily. Eventually, I learned how to take falls pretty well – but that constant “almost vertigo” feeling that I have has made it really hard for me to play any sports or doing anything really coordinated.

  7. I cannot drive. Also for some reason I cannot walk threw a doorway without running right into it.

I’m really bad at empathizing with people…:/
I’m also really bad at guessing how much space something takes up. I know there’s a technical term for this, but I can’t remember it. Like, if I’m putting leftover food away, I almost always pick a container that’s too big. This is supposed to be a skill that people develop as kids, but I guess I didn’t get the memo.

  9. I actually had the same problem with with swimming for many years. Then someone told me to blow out of my nose as I hit the water. It counteracts the force of the water trying to force its way to your brain or something, lol. It works, you don’t even have to hold your nose! However, always wipe your nose as soon as you surface in case of boogers!

  10. I can’t do anything origami. Even if you give me the instructions on how to fold a basic shape or show me step by step, I still wont be able to do it. Strangely, I’m better with papercrafts, but maybe it’s because they involve scissors and glue.

I also cant sew, which sucks because I want to make doll clothes for my doll.

  11. Like the one girl in the video, I’ve never been able to braid my hair. I also have never been able to get a smooth ponytail no matter how much product I use.

  12. I don’t have the ability to end a conversation. So I can get stuck talking to someone about all the little trivial things that have been happening in their life for the last x amount of months, and I just politely nod and do all those little things in conversation that lets them think it’s ok to keep going. Somehow even when I say I have to go, it still doesn’t end.
This doesn’t help that I work in retail, and I have to be kind to customers, but I’m the damn manager, so I should have a bit more authority to get out of a conversation!!
