January 1, 2015
Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the 2014 Eatyourkimchi Awards, in which we announce the best and brightest in Kpop for the year of 2014. We conducted voting on both the Eatyourkimchi App and on the poll we put up on our site, balanced the two out, and picked the winners of each category. In some cases, the votes on the app were significantly higher than those on the poll, and so the app votes won, while in others the poll crushed the app in votes, and so we’ve announced those. For the categories we’re announcing here in the blog post, you’ll see no better example of that than in
On the app, Akdong Musician won, and Ailee came in second, but on the Android poll, Ailee completely dominated, while Akdong Musician was nowhere to be found. And so we’re announcing Ailee as the winner of the best vocal performance of the year. Congrats Ailee!
In a completely unsurprising turn of events, Epik High won for this category. No other nominee was even close. Like, whoa. Total blowout! Gary & Jung-in were a distant second, while even more distant was GAEKO.
Speaking of blowouts, Got7 is your choice for the best Kpop Rookie Group of 2014, and that’s rather surprising for us as well. I’d have thought Winner would have won it, but they only got 3rd place, while Red Velvet took 2nd. I definitely heard a lot more Winner than the other two combined, and still hear them played around Korea to this day, while Got7 I didn’t hear that much of. Buuuut Jackson is all over the internets these days, it seems, so I think maybe that’s what tipped the scales in their favour.
Now, this is a category that we’re not all too well versed in, because we just watch music videos when it comes to Kpop. We don’t watch interviews or show appearances or live shows or anything like that. So this is something we’ve learned from! The best kpop performance of the year, according to your votes, was 2NE1 “MTBD”. YEAH!
So that’s it for this year’s EYKAs! Thank you for participating in the voting and for watching our silly video. If you’d like a couple more chuckles, we have some bloopers as well, including more stories from Zany Bros, who are a really cool group of…bros :D Check em out!
I found it hilarious that we’re not the only award show that doesn’t give our awards to the winners. Hell, if MNET can’t afford to give their winners their trophies, it shouldn’t be a surprise that we can’t, either. The Golden Spudgy cost a lot more to make than we expected!
Also, some of you might be wondering why we didn’t have Kevin, Amber, and Eric in the studio this time around, while we got them in for the nominations. Well, that’s what’s tough about the Kpop world: scheduling. When we were speaking with BTS’s manager as well, they were really interested in doing something together, but BTS were out of the country, so we couldn’t do anything. Thankfully, though, they sent us a video, and maybe we can do something together in 2015, if we’re both in the country at the same time :D
For the winners that were in Korea, though, we couldn’t film our scenes with them because we weren’t in the studio for a lot of the month, which brings us to our next point: we want to apologize for putting these up a lot later than expected, and for not fully filming every announcement as well. Over the past couple of months we’ve been trying to deal with a medical situation, which resulted in a bad reaction to a prescription from a negligent doctor, and we’re still not fully over it. We’re having difficulty recuperating, and though we are slowly getting better, we didn’t want to postpone this video any longer and wait till we’re fully recovered. I’m sorry that we couldn’t go full out.
We’re taking January off of our regularly scheduled videos, and we’re hoping that in February we’ll be fully recovered. Maybe we’ll do a video and talk about it more once we’re 100%, but for now we’re still not ready. This Christmas was really rough. Sorry everyone. We’ll hopefully still post small videos up from time to time, but not our regular 6 video a week schedule, though Speaker’s Corner will continue to go up undisturbed, I think!
