Let me start this off by saying how challenging it was to think of a title for this video. If we just said it was meat, it wouldn’t cover the immensity of the spread of food before us. We thought of calling it “traditional food from Jeollanamdo” but I’m not sure if people would really understand. I went for something lame instead. Let me know if you can think of something better :D

This, in fact, was the first of the videos we shot on our to road trip. We went to this place thanks to Hyunwoo, who – surprisingly – is from Jeollanamdo, and he was very excited when talking about its food. It’s very different from what he suggested. Jeollanamdo makes the best food in Korea. Is that right? We had to drive for a few hours to find out.

You know, I was a bit skeptical at first. I feel like I’ve eaten a whooooole lot of Korean food, and there’s very little that surprises me lately. When we went for this food, though, and the next food that’ll show up in our next FAPFAP, we we’re really amazed. This is very unlike anything we’ve eaten. Sure, we’ve had banchan (side dishes) before, but these tasted totally different. Fresher. Better seasoned. And just in different combinations.

Soo Zee mentioned how most Korean food lately is just the fast food stuff, and that’s what people think of when it comes to Korean food, but there are other places that offer fancier things that are quite different. There’s nothing wrong with Korean Fast Food, mind you. We love it and eat it daily, and it’s a lot healthier than North American Fast Food, but after a while you want something different, you know? This is different. Our last FAPFAP on The Best Bibimbap in Korea was different. And that other place we just ate in Yeosu, totally different. I’m really starting to rethink my Korean Food experiences.

Also, one of the things I found most fascinating about this experience is that the meat was secondary to the side dishes. The meat was alright, but it wasn’t anything you’d write home about. All of the side dishes really were the most impressive, and most delicious, features. It’s more like the meat was the side dish to the side dishes, and I would have been totally fine cutting it out of this meal altogether.

Something else that was really different: when we finished filming this video, we sat outside in the car for half an hour or so. We were offloading all of the footage and audio onto the computers. The owners of the restaurant were sitting outside and saw us sitting as well, so they offered us a giant bushel of grapes. For nothing. No money exchange. They were eating some, so they figured they’d offer us some as well. How awesome is that? What’s more interesting about this, though, is that they offered us some of their watermelon, and it was a different breed of watermelon from what we’re used to. The watermelons we usually eat have small black seeds in them. This watermelon had long, soft, white seeds in them, almost like pumpkin seeds. It was so different! The taste wasn’t as sweet as well, and the texture was a bit grittier. But I never had watermelon like it.

We have some pictures from this day as well. We like taking pictures of our adventures! Here’s a few of them so you can see a bit more what the spread looked like:

Look at the sleeping puppies! We saw them in the dog house outside of the restaurant. I wanted to walk up to them and touch all of their tummies, but their mom was coming back from the prowl, and I saw she gave me some mean eyes, so I stood away and just took pictures from a distance. AWW! But the puppies!

Otherwise, we’ve got a few bloopers from this week’s video as well. Check em out below!

Altogether, this was a completely awesome food experience, and the last of Korean road trip videos, apart from a random vlog compilation video. We’re gonna start publishing our European Tour videos soon, so stay tuned for those! I hope you liked the road trip vids. It kinda sucked the week of filming, because we were away for so long and didn’t publish as many videos as we usually do, but we got lots of footage that lasted us quite a while, I think! We’re planning to do another road trip in January, hopefully! If you’ve got any places you’d like us to see tell us in the comments!

  2. Can you guys make a ‘stuff to see and do’ list section on your website? It would be great for visitors to Seoul.

  3. I watched this right after finishing lunch and seeing ALL that food made me feel like my stomach was going to burst. But it looked so good! Banchan is probably my favorite part of Korean Cuisine! You get so much food and so much variety it’s AWESOME! I would love to try this place one day. It’s a shame though you can’t just order banchan as your main dish!

  4. So Martina do you generally cook Korean food at home too.. ? Or your Costco runs have you eating Canadian/American food when not doing food Porn? Oh and I would like a video seeing how Koreans make foreign food and what they use for ingredients.

  7. Haha if Martina just used the real words to the song, it would work with most FAPFAPs. “This is the ____ edition, hot and fresh out the kitchen…”

  9. Do they have European/USA inspired restaurants in Korea/Seoul? I remember when you went to Pizza hut and you said it was different from what they have in the US. But I mean like actual restaurants and not fast food? I’d like to see something like that, maybe of dishes you’ve tried on your tours. (then again I don’t know if they have it there)

    • We know a few that do some things fairly authentically. Most of them are based in Itaewon/Noksapyeong. We’ve been thinking about showing some of those restaurants as well, but I wasn’t sure if people would be interested, because they can get American/European food where they’re from, while getting Korean food isn’t that easy, no?

  10. How about calling it “Korean dim sum”??? Wow-them banchan looked really tasty!!!
Out of topic question— when is it good to visit Korea? Spring/summer/fall/winter???
Korean seems to have different festivals in different times of the year & in different area, ( i mean city or provinces). Have you gone to one (or a few)? What was the festival about? What was it like?
Oooh, can you pls do a food truck faffaf edition?

    • That’s a great question. I’d love to answer it, but so many of these side dishes we’ve just never seen before in Seoul, and I wouldn’t be able to name them. They were an entirely different experience.
