Beach Party in Slow City, Korea

Ah! Sorry this video didn’t go up last night. We were in the middle of moving into our new apartment and our new place doesn’t have Wifi yet. Argh! We’re back in the studio now so we can finally upload it. Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce you to the first video from our epic weeklong Eatyourkimchi Road Trip: Jeungdo, the Slow City. It’s in Jeolla Province, and it took us roughly 5 hours to drive here from Seoul. Thanks to the Eatyourkimchi Mobile, we’re able to get here. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have come here at all. Woot!

The drive there was pretty terrible. The rain was torrential, and we were really scared a lot of the way there. We’re lucky, though, because the flooding down in Busan was fatal for some people. We avoided that, but still got some ridiculously heavy rain on the way there. SCARY!

This is the first time I’ve ever been on a beach so empty. We saw a couple there right as we arrived, and they had a camera on a tripod and they were taking pictures of themselves and writing their names in the sand with hearts around it and all that jazz, but once we set up shop they left, and pretty much no one else came. Understandably: the weather wasn’t ideal. It was spittling a bit, and the clouds intimated much more to come. I was hesitant at first. I told Martina that we should just pack up and go and try something else, but she insisted, and – hell – she was right. SO RIGHT! The weather cleared up, our unicorn challenge was loads of fun, and we had lot of fun in the ocean as well, even though we weren’t supposed to. We made really lovely memories that day, and I kinda really want to live by the beach now, somehow. Someday.

We’ve got blooped from this week’s video as well, so check em out if you want some more lols :D

We’ve got lots of other videos from our road trip shot. We just need to edit them. Stay tuned for some awesome FAPFAPs of food you’ve probably never had before and – unless you drive down to these areas – probably never will! Click on the button below so you don’t miss out on any of the fun and deliciousness :D

  1. What is the name of this beach?

  2. Hi Simon and Martina! Can you make a TL;DR about the religion in Korea? Like their major religion? Do Koreans practice religions differently? Do they really care about religion? And could you also tell us what your religion is? :] I was always curious about the religion in Korea. I just couldn’t get it in Wikipedia hahaha

  3. Hey Martina! What website do you use to watch Reply 1997? After hearing you talk about it, I’m quite interested in watching it, though I’m not really a fan of dramas but more of variety shows.

    • I live in the States and I like Gooddrama! The episodes are separated in parts but you don’t have ads interrupting you in the middle of the episode.

    • In the States, you can go to viki.com or dramafever.com. Both are good. Basic is free, premium (without annoying commercials) is pretty cheap.

      • But I’m not from the states and I can’t watch either of them :(

  4. I never knew until watching your videos that I could have so much fun watching OTHER people have fun! I mean sure, I’m a teensy bit jealous but I’ll just have to wait till I get to visit Korea to do some of the things that you do! In the mean time, I do live in southern CA, and it’s pretty darn nice here.

I’m glad nothing bad happened on the drive there, 4 hours doesn’t really phase me, but 4 hours in torrential rain does! I can’t wait for the rest of the videos!!

  5. Simon you were so unicorning happy! It was the cutest unicorn on the beach, sorry ladies. I voted for Simon’s that night! When you were running on the beach the theme to Chariots of Fire was playing my head the whole time. ^_^

Glad you guys broke the rules and enjoyed swimming in the ocean. It would suck to make it to the beach and not get to get in the water. Can’t wait to see the rest of the EYK road trip videos.

The longest non-stop road trip I took was 21+ hours long. I mean we stopped for food but just kept going afterwards. Beside that was a 30 hour trip with a one night stop. For me the closest large cities from mine are each four hours away. Seems like nothing now after those trips. I’m good with 12-13 hours but after that I want to jump out of the car and start walking.

    • That’s pretty crazy. I remember driving with my dad from Toronto to Florida, but this was when I didn’t have a license, so it was really just him driving for almost 20 hours. It was pretty crazy, IMO. I can’t imagine doing that drive myself

      • In January I drove to and from LA (13 hrs each way) on my own for the U-Kiss concert. I was SUPER nervous since the furthest I’d driven alone was four hours. But it went by so smoothly and was rather more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. Only down side, my car does not have cruise control. On the way home my driving leg was killing me.

I applaud your uncle. There is no way I could do 20 hours of driving without some help. I’d need to stay a whole day somewhere in between.

  6. ohhhh….it made me miss stone skipping!…never ever had root beer, probably i should try some but its hard to get around here..
(yayy! first comment as a nasty!!, yay! first time using my bragging rights!!)

  7. I was so hoping you guys would do a “Who will be the first to fart in the car?” contest when you began the road trip. Oh well, there’s always next time.

  8. Yeah well where i live i can have root beer anytime!

  9. Hehe, this video is fun! I saw the twitter pics, my favorite was SooZee’s but I was too late to vote. :( Sorry, SooZee, I won’t let you down next time! :P And I have to agree, Simon, that somehow you look sooo much different without facial hair, like your beard has become a living entity that has finally been set free after all these years! :)

  10. Brilliant no-swimming technique done there! Definitely worthy of applause!

But really really fun video, great start to my day :)

  11. Haha wow I love that you guys are complaining about a 4 hour drive! For me that’s a piece of cake. I live in the US and travel a lot for school, and recently did a 34 hour long trek from Kentucky to Seattle, Washington! It took my mom and I FOUR days to do it, but it was a blast. Our main detour was Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota, which was pretty cool. We also saw some of the Badlands, which I want to go back too.
But you guys are the best and I can’t wait to see more of your road trip! Peace! ~ Laura

  12. I found it funny that Leigh had to run beside Simon as he raises his arm and runs halfway down the coastline.

  13. Watching you guys joke around just makes my day :)! Can’t wait for the next video! Btw, can someone help me out here: What’s the music used for Simon’s euhm… celebration? It sounds like a love child between Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer (only a tiny bit less epic). I would love to know :D!

Other than that: I’m so grateful for your hard work and for sharing so many things with us. When I’m feeling down, watching your videos makes me believe in my dreams again! So thanks a lot <3!

    • The music is “Al Maiten Suite”, by Joaquin Lera. Thanks Soundhound! 0w0

  14. I thought Martina’s was C and Simon’s was D. I think I thought Soozee’s was B because I remembered hearing she went to school for art and I thought that B was rather elegant and abstract :), which of course left Leigh with A. Consider my expectations DEFIED.

  15. Waaah that looked like so much fun. Can’t wait for the next videos. Also, Martina I AM AFRAID OF THE OCEAN TOO!! Solidarity :P

  16. Haha thanks for all the Charlie references Simon day made haha and I totally voted for you, how did that happen lol. well at least I think so. I did say that martinas was the most colorful. :) yeah when we went to see you guys at k con it was a ten hour drive for us. took 5 hours to get out of Utah and we still had 3 states to go through. Btw how is the robo-spudgey my roommate and i got to ya. did he stay in California as to not take up room and to not cause problems at the security? just wondering honestly.

  17. Leigh’s unicorn was so abstract. So meta.

  18. Since I’m in Texas… 5 hours is cake for us haha. It takes 8 hours to get out of Texas in practically any direction, from San Antonio. I actually took my longest roadtrip this year, I drove to California this summer for the Liberty in North Korea Summit ( And got to meet both of you Awesome peoples!!), By the way Simon, NICE SHIRT!!! Looking forward to your other crazy adventures!!!

  20. Now I wonder what rootbeer taste like…..anyone care to explain? ^^

    • Rootbeer is a little sweeter than coke, but has a very different flavor. People who aren’t used to it think it tastes like medicine – it was originally made from molasses, sassafras tree roots, and wintergreen leaves, after all – but those of us who grew up on it love it. It has a vanilla-y, anise-y taste. The closest thing I’ve found in other countries is cream soda, but even that doesn’t have quite enough herb-quality isn’t quite right.

      • Nailed it!! Even as a professional cook I don’t think I could have described it so well, haha.

      • Thanks! I think I can kind of imagine the taste

  21. 4-5 hours is nothing! Three years ago, we went on a road trip from Chicago, IL to Austin, TX. We left at 4am and my dad wanted to one-shot the drive, all 21 hours of it!We got to my aunt’s house at 1am the next morning. THAT was exhausting :)

For me normally though, the average road trip day is 12 or so hours, so not as bad at the Austin trip. I love road trips and prefer it to flying. I only fly if I have to (flying to other countries, which has barely happened).

    Love this video!

  22. Great to see you had so much fun. :) I want to go on a road trip, too, but I can’t… which is why I’m super excited for your videos!

    Off topic, but I love Martina’s headband/bandana. want…to buy it…so badly…
Which makes me think: Martina wears them all the time, so I could totally see you guys selling one in your shop with an eyk design.^^

  23. You need some of that nipple tape Simon… :)

  24. My

I’m just curious, why was it forbidden to swim there?

    • I think because it’s the offseason. We read on the official site that the beach is open until a specific date, which we missed, but out pension owner t old us just to go anyway :)

      • I was wondering the same thing.. I was imagining all kinds of reasons. Sharks? Jellyfish? Waterghosts? Now I know The Truth.

  25. You guys should come to the beaches in Australia during summer!! Its beautiful~

  26. Haha I feel you, Soozee- I don’t like root beer either, maybe because I had such high expectations of it and when I finally tried my very first (and last) root beer float, I could not get past two sips. It tasted exactly like how I would imagine 물파스 (the liquid medicine that helps against insect bites and sore muscles) to taste like… which was just too bizarre for me to handle!
But this looked like so much fun- empty beaches are the best! I’m really looking forward to the upcoming FAPFAPs from your trip! Jeollado food, mmmhhhhhh.

  27. This was a very nice way to enjoy waking up :p Anyway, do you guys have a clue why exactly you were not allowed to swim there? It looked like a perfectly fine beach and sea to me. Is there like some super stong current?

Ps, that middlefinger dance had me almost falling of my chair. Hilarious :’D

  28. It looks like you guise had a fantastic time! I can’t wait to see more videos!

And I hate root beer too, I wouldn’t have fought hard for that win either SooZee
