WTF – Chocolate Shrimp Chips

As I sit down to write this blog post, I realize now just how much of a hankering I have for good shrimp chips. I haven’t had them in ages. These chocolate shrimp chips don’t taste like shrimp chips at all, as the coating is completely overwhelming. But good shrimp chips: those things are made of dreams and fairy sprinkles.

And I realized that some of you might not have ever had shrimp chips. Am I right? It’s hard for me to remember what’s commonly available outside of Korea now, since we’ve been here for so long now. If you’ve never had shrimp chips, they don’t taste like chips to begin with. While chips have a flatter quality to them, as they’re made from potatoes, shrimp chips have the texture of cheesy poofs, which – for the life of me – I have no idea what real world ingredient they’re made of. And the chips themselves don’t taste like shrimp. They taste more like a seafood flavoured msg, but what does seafood flavour taste like? It doesn’t taste like real seafood. Like, hmm, how do you describe fake tastes that don’t really have real world equivalents? I remember when I first had Korean Watermelons, and how amazed I was that they taste like Jolly Rancher Watermelon candy, while before coming to Korea the watermelons I ate were watery and vaguely sweet. I wonder if there’s a seafood that tastes like Shrimp Chips?

I had fresh shrimp chips once, freshly popped at a restaurant we ate at in Toronto. I don’t even remember what we were eating with the shrimp chips. OH NO WAIT I DO! We were eating these gigantic spring rolls at a restaurant close to University of Toronto. They made the shrimp chips there fresh and warm, and they were glorious and I wanted to just sit down at the restaurant, look at their menu as I drink their free water and eat their warm shrimp chips, then decide that I’m not going to eat after I’m full. But that was when I was more unethical than I am now. But I’d still eat the hell out of those shrimp chips now. I haven’t really had any as good as those.

Ah. So many memories based off of these lame shrimp chips. The chocolate wasn’t even that good! Anyhow, if you’ve had shrimp chips before, how would you describe them? I don’t know what I can compare them to, apart from memories of being a broke student.

  3. I should of sent you the Candy Cane Raw Kale Chips I found this winter. They sucked, and I like kale chips. These just tasted like white chocolate, cashews, and melted candy canes that sat around fermenting.

  4. I don’t think there is anything worse considered “food” than the Filipino delicacy Balut …

  7. In Indonesia, shrimp chips are LIFE! You’ll find them at almost every (if not all) restaurant here. And they come in various shapes and sizes!

  8. We get prawn chips usually as a free extra with some Chinese or maybe Thai take out.

Oh man that vampire laugh reminded me of one of your old KMM characters. Ah those were the days. *singletear*

    • Me too! I instantly thought of Mordney when I heard them laugh. And he was my favourite character too! Good ol’ days indeed^^

  9. They sell Chinese brand shrimp chips at the store. Maybe its just the ones in Canada, but they taste like salt and nothing more. Honestly, if they sell chocolate covered potato chips at the store now, then anything is possible…

If you’re talking about those “shrimp” chips that you get at those dinners, I think those are styrofoam…

  11. We have shrimp chips in Malaysia too. They have those square kinds like the ones you guys ate and also another type which is a giant piece. http://liuzhou.co.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Prawn-crackers-cooked.jpg

    I think you’ll like them :)

  12. Off subject and I know you guys got away from the KPOP Music Mondays … BUT … well this isn’t KPOP. I just saw this last week and I was completely blown away. This young lady has an old (and I don’t mean like decrepit old, I mean like Aretha Franklin “blow the doors off the room and been doing it for decades” old voice that is just amazing.

That was fun! Thanks for sharing. I’ll put her on my list of Korean singers to watch out for. And you’re right, she’s got the perfect voice for R&B or even rock. Love to hear her take on a Stevie Nicks or Heart song.

  14. Can I ask, are you guys sensitive to MSG by any chance? In The U.S., we’re taught that MSG is terrible and unhealthy and could possibly kill you (when it’s just…you know…SALT. Special salt.) Whenever my friends from Myanmar give me any snacks with MSG though, I get really dizzy and can only have a few bites of the food. I’m wondering if it’s just me or if it’s some weird foreigner thing?

    • I don’t actually know what MSG is…are they the small crystal like things? That kind of look like little cake decoration sprinkles?…

If it is…then I think it’s put into dishes very often in Chinese food, like you add it in yourself when you cook…but most people don’t use it as much anymore.

    • Hmm, no. We’re not sensitive to it at all. And I think I remember reading about how MSG isn’t actually as bad for you as was initially suggested.

Anyhow, we’re totally ok with it :D

      • I remember watching a blind taste test on TV, they made everyone eat chinese food with no MSG. Then they were like “One half of your got MSG, Anyone else feel sick?” A bunch of people got up saying they felt sick and some said they can always “tell” if a place uses MSG or not. Then they were like “LOLZ no one got MSG! It’s all in your head!” I think most people get confused and don’t know that MSG occurs naturally, but people isolate it into a powder, think like white sugar or salt. So I generally think people should avoid it, but it isn’t what makes you immediately sick.
