Eat Your Sushi: Episode 10

Hello everyone!

We experienced our first Cherry Blossom season here in Japan, and sweet mercy, it was so beautiful! We didn’t celebrate it properly, though, I don’t think. We just rode around on our bikes and took a few pictures here and there, but we didn’t sit down for a picnic and get completely wasted. SO MANY PEOPLE WERE SO DRUNK! That’s not judgement, by the way. That’s just me being impressed. I haven’t really seen as much public drunkenness in Japan as I’m used to, but the people by our park definitely helped balance it out a bit :D

You know, I think Cherry Blossoms actually look better at night than during the day. If it’s bright out, then the whiteness of the cherry blossoms in the sky doesn’t really offer much contrast. At night, though, they pop out a lot more. Though, it’s tougher to take pictures of them at night because cameras aren’t that great for night vision. Ok enough nerd talk. We didn’t shoot a full video on the cherry blossoms, but we did take some pictures. Here they are!

Ok, back to filming! Martina just went to the Sailor Moon Special Membership Only Fan Event thingy (I know there’s a proper phrase for it but I don’t know it!), and I think she’s going to be telling her story about it soon. From what I heard, it sounded pretty interesting. See you in a few days, everyone!

  1. Hi, guys! This is a question for Martina: Where do you find your clothes and accessories? I always am amazed at how well put together and adorable you are, and I always look at your outfits in every video. I absolutely love your style! You can seriously pull off any look :) (P.S. I also really love all of the cute things you do with your hair!)

  2. Hi Simon and Martina, those are really gorgeous photos! Every year Cherry Blossoms cast a special spell to turn the calm and quiet Japanese people into the loudest and craziest…I guess! :P
I’ve recently found your youtube channel, and I LOVE your videos and blog posts! Can’t wait to see the next episode!

BTW, today I went to a bookstore in Tokyo area and found 2 fashion magazines (FRaU and Vivi, May edition), which both come with SAILOR MOON GIFTS. Martina, if you’re considering to add some items to your Sailor Moon collection, you should run to a bookstore asap (or amazon japan would be another option)! FRaU comes with a sailormoon sticker and a special booklet, as Vivi comes with a sailormoon small bag and a sailormoon mirror. So many Sailor Moon things are happening in May! :P

  3. HI Simon and Martina! Cheese lady is the lady who sold cheese(duh) in the grocery store in your original neighborhood when you first moved to Korea. You loved cheese lady because cheese was SO INCREDIBLY HARD TO FIND! she gave you hugs and when Simon went to the store without Martina, the cheese lady, she was like, ” w-where’s Martina??!”
    Ok Bye.

  5. Hi Simon and Martina! I want to answer the skill testing question. You mentioned cheeselady in a TLDR in 2013 when you talked about getting by in Korea without knowing Korean. She was a lady who sold cheese in the Hyundai Department store in Bucheon. You guys built a relationship with her and would have little chats with her in Korean and she often chatted with Martina and would ask for her when Simon went to the store without her.Martina even got scared when their beloved cheeselady hugged her from behind while she was in the supermarket.lots of love from the cheeselady! Love you much from an awesome nasty in Trinidad!

  6. Well, Demon Dan, saying Super Puzzle Fighter Two Turbo kind of puts an age range on you… That game is pretty darn old, and I should know. I remember playing it in high school (and after, because my guy friends are kind of hipster nerdy about some video games). Also, that game is super super fun Simon and Martina, you should try it. I used to have an emulator for it on my computer, but not anymore :(

Cheese ladyyyyy, she’s so grate (and other nerdy lines)! I think she worked in a department store in one of the cities you lived in/visited a lot in Korea when you first moved there. She got to know you over time and gave you cheese samples and was super friendly to both of you :) I think it’s a good idea to make friends with ladies that have samples of cheese!

  8. Idk where you guys met a Cheese Lady or whatever but my email username has been cheeselady68 since I was in middle school (the story is sort of stupid as to why the name and I’ve just been lazy about changing it) (and it’s the email I used to sign up for an account on here). So I thought that was really funny when the name came up in the video because I thought you were talking about me!

  9. amAZIng! I love the pictures. :D

  10. It is ok Martina, I can palm a basketball too, and my hands and my husband’s hands are nearly the same size. My dad was excited and thought I would grow up to be a basketball superstar, sadly I never grew up beyond 5’1″. So if you are talking about giant hands for a girl, proportionately speaking, I probably win.

    • That is amazing that you can palm a basketball at 5’1!!!. Just wondering, are you referring to the women’s sized ball. Very impressive either way :)

  11. Cheese lady was the woman in the department store that became your friend. If Simon was there without Martina she would ask about Martina.

  12. Hey, Simon and Martina, hope you’re having a great day, missing Spudgy and the Meems ;-;
A question for Dan: favourite anime?
Cheese lady, as is explained in Martina’s Special Story Time, is a woman who sold cheese at a department store who gradually got to know you better and saw your growth in korean proficiency and your relationship got to the point that if Simon went without Martina she would,’Where’s Martina?’ She was the only person who backed hugged Martina without fatal physical repercussion. And because one time they ran out of parmesan to sell she cut a chunk off the sample, put it in a beg and gave it to you FOR FREE!
    ♫ Cheese lady ♫
♫ You make me so happy ♫
    ♫ Please grate me ♫
    ♫ Parmesan cheese lady ♫
♫ Make me some grated, (oregano) cheese (oragano’s not cheese, it’s a herb) ♫

  13. She’s from the department store in Bucheon! She got to know you so well that when Simon went to the store without Martina she noticed and asked where Martina was. She would also give you pieces of cheese for free sometimes. She is also the only person in the world that is allowed to suprise backhug Martina without getting a elbow to the face.

  14. Cheese Lady was from a department store back in Bucheon, if I’m not mistaken. Who saw your Korean improve over time and got to know you really well, asking where the other was if you were alone and such. Who Martina almost decked because she hugged her from behind without warning… aha, opps.

  15. OMG DAN! I LOVE PUZZLE FIGHTER TOO! The Sakura theme song <3 <3 <3 I played the game both on the PS1 and my PC…I was so addicted then. Simon and Martina should totally try it if you can find the game! It's so gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood. x=

Yeah! My postcard reached (Sorry for the bad handwriting). I wanted to send a goodie pack but the post office seemed kind of scary (and my Japanese is not that good too)…hahaha.
Just want to check, this was in 2014 but did you guys receive the Curry Fish Head sauce and Kaya spread I left at the You Are Here cafe? Thinking of sending some things from Singapore to you again, any request? :D

  16. Oh man Dan, Super Puzzle Fighter II turbo *IS* the best game! Simon and Martina, you should borrow Dan’s and play it for next week’s challenge. Millions of views – LOL!

What I saw of this video so far is great but…… I’ve been noticing two things: a) it’s super awesome that the videos are so long but by the time it’s over and I want to leave a comment, I’ve forgotten at least half of the cool things I wanted to comment on since there are so many. I noticed this since I tend to watch the videos late Sunday night and then re-watch Monday morning with my son where I end up saying, “oh yeah! I wanted to say something about that part” and then it’s still gone from my mind by the time the video is over again. I have no idea what you could do about this or even if it needs a solution at all but just in case you were wondering why people didn’t comment on some things as much as before. and b) your site is slow as dirt again. Seriously, I didn’t finish watching the video last night because I went to bed but I haven’t been able to load it again yet since it takes over 5 minutes to even start it, longer if I accidentally tried to scroll on your page. I don’t know if that pullbar at the bottom of the page or ads are responsible for the choking or not but man, the videos are almost unwatchable (one they start, they are fine, it’s getting to that point) and the posts unreadable again. Been this way for a couple of weeks now, even logged in (I am not premium though).

Cyber_3 – Maybe spring has finally come to Southern Ontario…I’ll have to settle for my nectarine tree blossoms though. Hanami is gorgeous, probably psychadelic drunk ;)

    • Finally watched ’til the end. Thanks for mixing it up at the end with the swans going backwards, too adorbz! BTW, I also can palm a basketball Simon, in fact, in highschool and university the other guise called me “Dr. K” on the courts (because my name is Kelly and I’m awesome at basketball). My husband and I also have the same size hands Martina (your hands are useful and beautiful, not shovels!>_<+), our wedding rings are the same size and we often used to mix them up until his had a workshop accident and got a dent – now it's well-worn and well-loved, like us ;).

p.s. ads blocked or unblocked, linux pc or apple product, same slowness, mmmmm….molasses…..

      • Okay, trying to narrow down the cause of the slowness I am seeing – it’s not: Japan, youtube, videos, high quality photos, or text. For some reason, I can scroll super fast once I get down into the comments area (even with the Dr. Meems pulltab at the bottom) but it’s molasses time anywhere above that. Like 2 whole freaking minutes just to scroll past the blog text and photos to the comments. Hope that helps.

  17. Oh oh oh! We went to that park! It was so, so pretty. It was mostly an accident since we needed to walk through it to reach our destination, but I’m glad we found it. We also saw those rabbit things in Shibuya! I couldn’t hug them though cause we were sorta in a hurry to make the to the Ghibli Museum. :c

We also might have gone to Coco curry twice in one day… Almost 3.

  18. There was a cheese vendor in a store back in Bucheon that you befriended and nicknamed Cheese Lady. I liked that story, it was adorable:)

And I’m so glad Meemers and Spudgy will be appearing in your videos again soon!<3

  21. Eat Your Sushi Shinkansen of Episodic Thoughts:
    1. I thought the Japanese binge drank at Hanami in order to dull their senses against pollen allergy…
    2. Is that a cherry blossom viewing event, or a population density study??
    3. After the tsukemen experience, just imagine what a Japanese mukbang could be like!

  22. お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! お花見! (If anyone knows which anime I’m referencing and the character, you’re amazing).

Cheese lady! She’s that really nice lady who worked in the grocery store you went to in Bucheon. When you were learning Korean, she was so helpful! Sometimes she gave you free cheese!. Then , sometimes she’d come up from behind you and hug you! Then you’d be freaked out and almost attacked, till you realize it’s just cheese lady.

  23. Omg Cheese Lady!! That was a long tume ago, Im pretty sure she was the lady in your local supermarket in Busan who you met when you got there and she went through your learning of korean with you, like when you met her you couldnt speak any and by the time you left you spoke loads together.

I remember you saying she gave you free cheese once and that story about when Martina was somewhere and she knew Simon wasnt around for whatever reason and someone jumped up behind her, she turned around ready to hit someone and realised it was Cheese Lady!

Gaahhhh those stories are so old! But I remember them so well, ahh Busan

    • All this time I thought you guys moved from Busan to Seoul, now I read the other comments and it is BUCHEON?!?! Noooooooo Ill hand in my EYK badge and bubble gun *turns away in shame to dramatic music*

      • Don’t worry, for the longest time I thought it was Busan too. I’m not sure why, my brain definitely HEARD and understood “Bucheon”, but for some reason it transformed~ in my memory to “Busan”. Anyway, so you’re not alone!

  24. oh my gosh i remember cheese lady! that was so classic!! she was an ajumma at a department store you’d buy cheese from, then she started talking to martina in korean about cheeses and recipes and stuff… she knew y’all (especially martina!) super well!
and that one time…. she completely randomly surprise hugged you! and you got free cheese from her! and it was amazing. everyone needs a cheese lady in their life

  25. WAIT. WHAT? I NEVER WIN ANYTHING ONLINE. I JUST HAD A MINI HEART ATTACK.
I do know the answer to this week’s question as well, but I’ll let someone else win the capsule toy. I might just die of happiness. Also, those cherry blossoms look absolutely gorgeous.

    • We’re still working on finding ethical distributors. It’s hard to find things that aren’t outsourced to China, which isn’t always inethical in its factory work, but it’s hard for us to be sure. But we’re on it!

  27. Okay so I had to do some digging to find this skill-testing question’s answer. Cheese lady comes from an old tl;dr where you were talking about not speaking Korean in Korea. Cheese lady is a woman would sell you guys cheese and slowly start talking to you. Over time, she would recognize you, give Martina a surprise hug, and give you some free cheese!

  28. Oh Muh Guh! Cheese Lady!!! I remember this episode. You guys were talking about how you had just recently gone to Korea and you were exploring your neighborhood area and you went into this little shop that sells cheese and when Martina was looking at something she felt someone come up and hug her from behind and was like “who am I about to kill — cuz i know that ain’t Simon” lolz. and it was CHEESE LADY!!! And she gave you guys free cheese sometimes and then you guys told us (nasties) to go out and not be afraid to explore or make connections with ppl just cuz there might be a language barrier. ^w^ Love you guys so much!! Can’t wait for y’all to be reunited with your pets! <3

  29. The GomChingu question was very nice as well the response. I can relate a little… changed my primary studies (I graduated Pharmacy Biochemistry) to pursue Culinary Arts. Then, master degree in Food Science. And the foodblog world mixed in! :D

The Kanagawa oki nami ura t-shirt is so cool!

Martina, one setback in your winning streak — come back strong for next week’s Challenge!
    Loved Simon’s shirt ‼️

  31. Cheese Lady! She worked at the Hyundai Dept store in Bucheon and she would talk and chat with you guys while you still really green in speaking Korean and still living in Bucheon. You guys got to know her (and vice versa!) really well as a result. Memorable moments include her ‘gifting’ *nudge wink* you with a huge wedge of parm (YAS PARM, that stuff is NOT cheap) and surprise hugging Martina from behind (which nearly caused Martina to go all ‘WHO THE FUQ IS THIS?!’ on her).

(Free cheese is the best cheese.)

  33. Those cherry blossoms are absolutely gorgeous. I’m super jealous that I’ll probably never see them in person. I’m also happy that Martina is going to tell us about her experience at the Sailor Moon Convention. I’m super curious about it.

  34. Ooooo cheese lady was the lady that worked at Hyundai department store in Bucheon that you started chatting with when you two weren’t very good at Korean yet, and she came up behind Martina and surpise hugged her :D

  35. Hello!!
First time posting a comment here but i’ve been watching your videos for a few years now. I must say it’s been pretty fun reading/watching your adventures from Korea to now Japan. I love Japan a lot, been there 3 times now? and i’m still itching to go back there again and again. HAHA which reminds me a time when i was at a restaurant near Ikebukuro station and there was this playground in facing the shop. There was a group of people drinking there since it’s hanami and there was this middle age japanese man standing up and just literally screaming out loud. It was quite a hilarious scene because there was this japanese girl eating on the table next to us and she just looked up, stared and then turn to me and my friend (because we had this amused look all over our face) just shrugged and said “oh he’s drunk” hahahahahahaha… that man can really scream LOL
