Eat Your Sushi: Ep 6

Hello everyone! Welcome to this week’s episode of Eat Your Sushi! It’s our sixth week in Japan. I realize soon we’re going to have to start talking in months. I don’t want to sound like those parents who, when you ask how old their babies are, say “43 weeks.” Like that means something to me! As soon as you get over 8 weeks then it starts getting weird. Just say two months! Ok enough of that.

We’re almost done all of the boring things we have to do in settling in! We got a bank account! We got cellphone plans! We got both of those after filming this episode, so you’ll see stories and videos of those in next week’s episode. Now all that’s left is to get our furniture, and then we’ll be like real people! Wahoo!

This week is an exciting week, because we have our first guests visiting us in our house. Yay! We have Brian and Whitney coming for almost a week. You might remember last year when we spent a week in Punta Cana, we were actually there for their wedding. For their anniversary, they’re in Tokyo, so we’re going to be hanging out with them. Yay! Friends! Still don’t have enough furniture to be good hosts, but we do have enough bowls at least to feed them with. No plates yet, though. Just bowls.

Also, just a heads up: I’m not sure if we’re going to be able to announce this week’s winner next week. On Saturday, we filmed our special edition Eat Your Sushi episode at the YouTube Space in Tokyo. It was great! A bit challenging to do in front of people and not mess up. We mess up oftentimes when we’re filming alone, but we can just cut that out and no-one ever knows. But here we’re in front of people. If we mess up, they’ll know! Anyhow, I think we’ll be able to publish it next week, but YouTube sometimes takes a while to approve videos that were shot in their studio. So, if they can greenlight us in time, we can publish the special edition next week and then go back to our regular schedule the week after. If not, then nevermind!

  2. I wanna go to Japan and magically run into you guys and wave then scream and run away! >83 But, any who I’m pretty sure Simon misses eating sangyapsal or the black pork from Jeju! Possibry. It may also be the goat stew but, he really couldn’t eat that regularly in Korea anyway since it was so south of the coast.Final answer Sangyapsal!

  3. aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh I’ve paused the video directly at the punishment simply because OMG Martina I feel your pain. I hate celery SO much and I would be crying so hard right now. It tastes SO fowl. I get so mad when egg and tuna salad have bits of celery in here in Canada (celery is pretty much only ever used for dipping in the UK where I’m from). It’s probably the thing that upsets me most about Canada.

Also, the challenge was totally hindered by your beautiful cheekbones! I have EDS too and it gives us bigger cheekbones and smaller jaws/chins, so Simon had an unfair advantage as his face is flatter PLUS the beard! Aaaaaaaarrrrrgggggh celery noooooo.

Okay, I guess I will go back to watching now to see how this nightmare panned out.

  4. Martina, I feel your pain deep in my heart. Celery was mad by evil cranky wizards who just wanted to inflict pain among all the nice things in the world. I can only eat it in a stew or potpie but other then that ITS NO GO, BAD TOUCH.

Also to answer the question I really thing it 육회 or Raw Korean Beef..since you know that cow is just for Korea like how Kobe is just for Japan. And it has to be raw because it being cooked just doesn’t do it for him due to all the chewyness and Simon likes his meat (oh baby) to fall apart when you chew it. That’s my guess!!! :)

Also, I have a question since Korean Food was brought up: Have you guys made any Korean food while being there in Japan for six weeks? Are the ingredients hard to come by at all? Or is it like, wham-bam-thank you-sam aisle 4 and down to the right in the grocery stores?

  5. Celery is also my least favorite food!

  6. Hello Simon and Martina!
Ummmm I guess you miss free ban-chan (Korean side dishes).
If Simon misses Korean fried chicken, you can get them in Tokyo too(๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
There are like Kyo Chon chicken in Roppongi, Kang Ho Dong chicken 678 in Shin-Okubo.

I am also wondering if Martina’s old friend/neighbour Miki knows that you guys live in Japan.
    It’d be a sweet surprise for her!^^

Sweet dreams you two, love ya!

  7. I’m 100% with you on the hatred of Celery. It is vile. My least favorite thing is getting a tuna salad sandwich and getting a celery surprize inside….super gross….I could never eat a stick of it, I’d probably vomit first.

  9. MLE

It was so nice meeting you both at the event and also being able to see _____ in person! He was very nice and I shall reveal nothing :)

There’s a bunch of volunteering opportunities in Fukushima. There’s a group I work with every month, but they’ll be closing down in March although they may post some random events every now and then. I’ll keep you updated!

There’s also https://japancatnetwork.org/ an organisation that helps rescue and re-home animals in the Fukushima area that were abandoned or displaced due to the earthquake and tsunami.

If I hear of any other volunteering you could do up here I’ll let you guys know! I hope you can find something easily accessible in Tokyo too :)

  11. Hi Simon and Martina!
I think Simon misses Korean Fried Chicken!
I also have a question for you: Will you visit Hungary? There are lots of asian markets and some “delicous” spam, that you should try!
    Have a nice day!

  13. I’m venturing a guess… backed up by facts.
    Simon misses Samgyeopsal the most!
I’m enjoying seeing your adventures in Japan and also the longer videos work well.
Ps. Send a shoutout to Soozee and Leigh next week! They are doing awesome skits with their Do Stuff channel – but I’m sure you know about that :D
For facts, see this ooooold video from 2012:

  14. Martina you should have Simon eat japanese fermented beans called “Natto” as his punishment for making you suffer celery. No KFC for Simon!

    • Haha, that is a fantastic idea! But watch, he’ll turn out to like natto. :P

  15. Simon misses… Korean Fried Chicken? I would also like to think he’d miss Jjimdak, but that can’t be right…

    I now really want omurice…

  19. Martina! Simon! I’ve been blasting EXO What Is Love for weeks now. My husband has finally cracked and will sing along with me. Just wanted to say thanks, and maybe you can add it to your playlist for nostalgia’s sake.

  20. and i would have to say probilby korian fried chicken i know you love that stuff

  21. Oh, and I also dislike celery. Its stringy and awkward. You should put a poll in your next video about celery because I think more people hate it than like it.

  22. Oh, oh Simon are you missing Korean Fried Chicken? That’s my guess! It seems like it is one of your favorite dishes. You guys are great! Martina, what ever did happen to that huge Kirby from episode 4?

  23. I was having such a crappy night until I remembered that it was Sunday and you guys probably uploaded your video… Thank you both for putting a giant smile on my face, not just tonight but every week. You guys are really amazing.

  24. I really love your end shots. Love the music. Love the vibe and what it shows. You guys are doing awesome with the new format.

    • Thank you!

      • Couldn’t agree more! Love what you guys have been doing. And speaking of, I love that song, can’t get it out of my head. Any chance I could get the name of it? Keep it up guys :)

    • I want to play ffxiv first before I go, so I can appreciate it more. I just downloaded it. I need time to play it, though!

  26. I think the best part of this video was seeing Martina playing with the Domo plush. It made me smile so much, probably because I love seeing people enjoy things, like toys, without any hesitation or embarrassment. Also, I am going to guess that Simon misses Korean fried chicken the most.

  27. Is there any other food you would love to be sent, because i think alot of people would like to know (how do i punctuate this sentence!?!?)

    • Hahaha. Your punctuation was fine!

As for what we want sent, we’re very easy people. We’re very happy with letters. Food lasts a day, but letters we save forever :)

  28. Japanese years are based on the # of years the Emperor has reigned. For the current Emperor is has been 28 years.

    • Extra note, it’s Emperor Akihito’s (Heisei) reign, which is where Heisei came from for the date.

  29. Martina, it won’t change the taste of the celery but you can strip the strings out. Slide a knife under the skin at the top and pull. The string stuff will pull out. It makes it easier eat if you don’t mind the taste.
I love celery and I love juiced celery. We all different.

  30. Martina! Where did you get those fingerless gloves (in the keychain scene)?!! They are super cool! So jelly!

Again, the ending shot of the lit up tree and people with umbrellas in the rains was spectacular and I liked how you angled and slightly shrunk the banner and link parallelogram (?) to make the background more visible. I am really enjoying these videos, especially with the longer format, it keeps me tided over almost all week until the next one.

Martina, I have some bad celery news for you, it’s in everything. Every soup and most stews use “mirepoix” as a base which is onion/carrot/celery. What about Bloody Caesar drinks? That’s celery salt on the rim of the cup. It’s a subtle flavour in cooking but it does make a noticeable difference when you don’t use it. My Mom used to make us eat it as kids and even with Cheez Whiz or peanut butter on it, it was barely tolerable so I completely empathize with your dislike. I don’t think that people really eat it on its own much, but a little in cooking is very useful, I keep a bunch in the fridge and go through only 2 bunches a year. Adds a nice crunch in spaghetti sauce or stir fry if you chop it up super fine and only use a half stick.

Cyber_3 – giving you the bird for making me remember Lu yet again 9_9 T_T XD

    • I got those gloves at a Claire’s Accessory and due to my big hands they are too small so I had to cut out the tips to fit my long fingers. But they were so cute I had to get them, plus only one dollar!!! Oh I know celery is in a lot of things because I can taste it. No matter how much it is pureed or diced I can taste it. >:} Lucikly not a lot of celery in Korean or Japanese food. Woot woot!

  31. Sooo i just paused the video to say one important thing, actually 2! important things: 1 this is my first coment on EYK page or video :) (i dont use social media a lot so i dont have users to give likes or comments T^T), and 2 i think Simon will win the challenge cause of his giant face *starts giggling* while Martina’s will just fall off :v I SHALL CONTINUE WATCHING TO FIND OUT!

  32. How could you possibly miss any food when you have ramen all around you *taste of heaven*

  36. Simon is missing… Korean Fried Chicken?

  37. I will always and forever vote for Martina. You both cheat, but Simon cheats more.

  38. I’m gonna say Simon’s missing Korean style fried chicken the most… and rightfully so, that stuff is *good*! There’s a Korean style fried chicken place hidden away in Calgary (run by an awesome Korean family) and every time I’m in town I get a “half and half” box: half a plain fried chicken with regular seasonings, and half a chicken in their hot & sweet sauce. And I eat it all… by myself TT TT lol it’s too damn good!! Aaaaand now I’m salivating ;;>.>

I hope you guys run into some of the other Jvloggers in Tokyo, I can see you doing an epic collab with Chris from Abroadin Japan xD

  39. I really dont know the answer… but i am gonna guess Korean kimchi?

  40. Oh my goodness! I hate celery too! As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to like other foods that I used to hate, but not celery. It’s like stringy green stagnant pond water that crunches. Yuck!

    • For as long as I’ve known Martina, maher hatred of celery has been consistent. I doubt it will ever change.
