Eat Your Sushi: Episode 9

Hello everyone! It’s been a bit of a weird week, so let’s start with some story telling!

For starters, last weekend, we were in Oshima Island, and came back Tuesday night. We shot a video there, a big one, and it’ll take a while to put together, but it’ll be fun once it comes out! The point is, we didn’t film anything Monday or Tuesday that we would otherwise use for our Thursday video, so we didn’t have a Thursday video this time around. I’m sorry! I feel bad publishing two Eat Your Sushi videos in a row. We should be making more videos, but this week was bizarre.

Also, we finally made it to 1,000,000 subscribers! Holy smokes! So, this week we spent a lot of time editing our video for our Million Subscriber Celebration video. It should be up tonight, if not, then tomorrow. It’s a lot bigger and more complicated than stuff we usually do. I’m sorry for the delay! But it’ll be fun once it’s up. I hope you like it :D

Otherwise, fun story time: we went back to Our Favorite Izakaya recently, which is why you see that extra clip of Martina flipping eggs in this week’s video. Anyhow, they told us that they saw the video, and they loved it! Yay! We didn’t actually tell them about the video when we published it. But somehow they saw it. Awesome! And we met a couple of people there who saw our video as well, Amalia and Jacob (I think that’s how you spell their name, because we asked their names but we didn’t ask them to spell their names, because that would be weird). They were very nice.

Lastly, I think we’re going to be able to do our house tour soon. Hooray! We have our final bits of furniture coming in, and then our house will make sense kinda sorta, and we’ll be able to share what it looks like. No animals here yet, sadly. They’re coming April 23rd. SO FAR AWAY! But we’ll have a big reunification video with them as well, I’m sure.

Ok, on with the rest of our day! Time to get filming, and putting the final touches on our million subscriber video. Have a fun week, everyone!

  1. So, I know you said you wouldn’t tell, but my friend and I are going to Japan in March/April, and I would love to know the name/location of that coffee shop. In 2015 we went to Germany and visited Schamong Kaffee because of your video I saw. Thanks, and maybe we’ll see you while we’re there!

  2. My boyfriend and I play Magic the Gathering,Munchkin, and Smash Up. I guess those are more card games. Our local comic shop has a table top game day, and yiu can earn “shop bucks” for every hour you play and use them to buy things off a special table.

  3. Playing board games is so much fun! I’ve recently started hanging out with a different company, a wonderful couple who aren’t really into drinking or clubbing any more. So, now I spend weekends playing board games at their house. There are usually 6 or 7 of us and it takes us 8 hours to finish two or three games. Unfortunately, my other friends can’t get how it’s possible to have fun without drinking(That’s sad.

  4. Forbidden Island is fun! But sooooo unforgiving – we played with the max players (4) and we lost before it was even my turn :< two turns and we lost. Forbidden Desert is more forgiving (the board just gets buried in Sand instead of sinking into the depths of the sea) – although it's still super easy to lose. Gloom is hilarious and terrible, and I love Pandemic but no one wants to play it with me :< all my friends prefer Contagion (where you spread the disease instead). My friend also backed Exploding Kittens on Kickstarter but lost his not safe for work edition. Games that are fun to play (with 2 or more players) Machi Koro, Tokaido, Carcassonne and Qin. Games that are fun if you can find more players Tsuro (stressful, fun and fast), Shadow's Over Camelot and Betrayal on the House on the Hill (these games you play against the board and a potential traitor). Board game culture has boomed in Toronto I feel this was helped in part by Snakes and Lattes. 90% sure between me and my friends we can open our own board game cafe….

For the weekly question: You guys have travelled to France, Germany, Finland, Norway, Poland, Sweden and I believe Switzerland (for a con)

  6. If you’re able to,you guys should try to attend the Kanki Jinja Reisai festival on May! It’s a street festival held every May 13th by the Geiko (Geisha) and the Maiko (apprentice Geisha) of the Gion Higashi district (Kyoto),it seems like a cool thing to do to experience the traditional side of Japan and I’m sure it’s not as pricey as a Teahouse party (aka “Ozashiki asobi”).
PLUS: One of the Maiko,Tomitsuyu, spent four years in New Zealand and speaks fluent english
PLUS 2: During this date, you *might* be able to catch Tomitae (Tomitsuyu’s elder Maiko “sister”) wearing the “sakkou” hairstyle, which is very important because it marks the end of her training as a Maiko and her “graduation” to a fully fledged Geiko, which is also super rare in Gion Higashi because it’s a very small district and most of the Maiko retire without becoming Geiko.
PLUS 3: I have seen many videos taken during this festival,so I don’t think you’ll have any problems recording there.
So yeah…you should check it out…I mean,if you want to.You might be able to learn how to play Janken with Geisha, think about it :P

  7. Wait, guise…
You are REALLY making the crowd walk backward for the end credits !?
HAHA. If it’s true, they are so kind to get involved for a bioutifoul gurl in pink.
Congratulations for the dazillions subscribers, you’re worth it <3

I made a big decision : as watching you makes me hungry (I mean, not you YOU, but the food you eat) whether I already had a big meal or nothing before, I will always watch the next videos with an empty stomach. So I could legitimatly eat afterword.

    • (i feel stupid now, i know you’re playing the video backward for the back walking effect, but on that specific episode, i really had the feeling that the crowd was walking backward for weeaall but hey, no, in fact. sorry for not thinking twice!)

  8. May I ask which camera you used for the ‘Shrine Party’? I love the quality!

    • It’s a Sony A7sii. We got it because it shoots very well in low light, and we’re night people, so it makes sense to shoot with it. I totally love that camera!

  10. Congrats on hitting 1 million subscribers, that’s so awesome!! :D Board games are so much fun to play – you can’t beat classics like Monopoly! I still have my Monopoly board game from when I was little, and I bought a deluxe Monopoly with shiny “gold” pieces a few years ago. XD

Also, thanks for the heads up about Season 3 of Sailor Moon Crystal! I have a lot of catching up to do with the show now XD

  17. Board Games are the best! We play all the time with my boyfriend and our friends :) Recently we have discovered “Cards Against Humanity” (subtitled Party game for horrible people =D) have you guys played this one? It’s really funny and it’s available for free on the internets. The first person to play (or to be the “Card Czar” to be precise) must be the person, who pooped last – just a little sneak peak, if you haven’t played it yet :)

I loved Martina’s Pusheen jumper in the Izakaya bit, so cute!^^ I recently saw somewhere a Jigglypuff jumper and thought of you ;)

P.S. You guise definitely went to Poland, Germany and France :) But you haven’t been to the Czech Republic yet – please come to the Czech Republic, we have the best beer and girls! (Not sure if this is a strong selling point? =D Let me know, I’ll throw others in the mix ;))

  18. Congratulations on one million subscribers!! So awesome, and I can’t wait for the video :D
I love that coffee story – there is no way possible to experience stuff like that if you don’t just walk around and allow yourself to get lost.
Oh, and you travelled to Germany, Netherlands and Norway! I met you guise in Oslo, and I talked with you for the first time. Happy moment for me :D

  19. My boyfriend was working beside me as I watched this video, and when it got to the part with Martina watching anime and singing, I turned the screen to him and asked if that was how he felt and he went YES THAT IS IT, THIS IS MY LIFE. *Fistbumps Martina*

  20. My husband and I love playing board games too. I will have to look into Dominion so we can add it to our collection. Here is a picture of our “baby” while we play games. http://imgur.com/gallery/Tnpg92f

  21. I love board games!!! But now that I’m a grown up and my siblings have moved away from me, I don’t have anyone to play with. I have a muppets monopoly that has only once seen the light of day, and I have a scooby doo version of clue that I bribed my six year old nephew to play with me once. It’s just so sad seeing those poor unused board games sitting on the shelf. I had a couple of times when I was younger where I would set up my stuffed animals around the board and play a game with them. When I got angry for losing against my penguin, my sister said there was something wrong with me…….so I stopped.

  22. Yay Spudgy and Meemers will be with you sooon !! Funny thing, I sent my macbook in for repair and I have EYK stickers all over it. So, the Apple genius thought Spudgy was a cat.

Oh rather strange question. Will there be more makeup videos soon? I need to see what Martina’s new trend colour for lips and eyes are. For artistic reasons. Of course.

  23. Wait, what? One dollar for the hispter coffee? WOW! Pusheen sweater :3 But let me just say… the Simon’s Unibrow is very distracting, hahahahah

  24. Martina is finally on a winning streak!Congratulations for getting to 1 million subscribers you guys put so much effort into making great videos it’s nice to see you hit a huge milestone. Thanks to watching your channel I (and my sister) got completely sucked into K-pop and K-dramas.I know you did a few TL:DR’s on Korean broadcasting rules/ dramas so I wondered if you found Japanese T.V and broadcasting different from Korea or Canada in terms of broadcast rules, humor, etc?

  25. YAY MARTINA FOR WINNING! WOOOOOOT! XD
DAN! You have wonderful taste in lasagna! Veggie lasagna’s are so much better than meat ones! :D
In terms of the question, the most recent European country was Finland for an anime convention. Before that, y’all went to Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands for the Ooh Euro Nasty Tour. I enjoyed those videos. THAT SWING IN THE HOUSE IN THE NETHERLANDS WAS LEGIT.

  30. Question: That window behind you… are those trees real? Or is it just a picture? If they are real, are you in the city at all or on the outskirts? Because it looks rather lovely out there. Okay, that was more than one question.

  31. Yay Martina for the win!!!

Hey Simon and Martina, my bf and I will be traveling to Japan in a couple of days. We’re really excited to try out the Izakaya you recommended, since it’s right next to where we’re staying! But also kinda nervous because we’ve never been to one and don’t speak Japanese. >< Anyways, we are big fans and really hope to see you guys there!!

  39. I just have to say, Simon, I think you rocked those angry eyebrows and that unibrow. I am quite partial to two separate eyebrows, but you wore it well. So hats off to you, my friend.
Congratulations on making it to 1,000,000 subscribers!! Looking forward to the Million Subscriber Celebration video!
