So, at the moment Rachel and Jun are at our place, and as we’re editing this week’s Eatyoursushi episode we told them the two stories we shared, and – they admit – they haven’t come across people as crazy as we have so far. So I’m starting to wonder, going back to one of the questions we answered before: are our lives really as eventful as we make them out to be? Back then our answer was, no. Our lives aren’t eventful. We just get very excited about things, and keeping a happy perspective is always important. But after meeting these two people on this bizarre Saturday, we’re not going to say that nothing ever happens in our lives. Martina almost had demons pulled out of her through a subway man’s pliers. Sometimes, things are crazy for us. But for our next week’s Eatyoursushi we do not have crazy stories to tell. We have boring stories that we find really amusing, but no bizarre encounters this time.

Otherwise, we can now finally talk about Pokemon Go. I think we’ve come to a conclusion about it: WE REALLY SUCK AT IT. We’ve been playing it for about a week now or so. Martina is at level 9. Rachel just started playing a few hours ago. She’s at level 8. HOW THE HELL ARE WE LEVELING UP SO SLOW?! It could just be that our area is lame and there’s not a lot of activity, so we can’t catch as many Pokemon, while Rachel has loads of Pokemon we’ve never seen, because she was in the Shibuya area. So maybe that’s it. Our area’s lame and so our levelling up is slower than most people. Poop. But I will say this: our bike riding and phone rocking technique WORKS! We were able to hatch eggs more quickly that way. Give it a shot if you can, but on a not busy street, of course. Don’t die plz.

Also, some of you might be confused about the photoshoot thing we were doing in this week’s video. It wasn’t for anything in particular. It basically came from the fact that, when we did our Japan Times interview, the photos used were really old photos of us. We look different now. We keep on doing interviews, though, and the pictures they use don’t really reflect what we look like now. So we just got a bunch done. I don’t know what they look like yet, but they were fun! We walked around Shimokitazawa, and it really reminds us of Hongdae, so shooting around there was almost nostalgic for us. Hopefully the pictures turn out all right. We’ll share them with you once we can!

  2. Pokemon Go tip here!
You don’t actually need to move your hand when riding a bike. As long as you don’t ride your bike super fast, it will count it. The game using only the accelerometer and GPS in your phone, and not other tools. So basically, you just need to keep your speed less than the speed of car/train/bus or other vehicle which is faster than walking/running. This way you can keep both hands on the bike and ride it much safer!

  3. MARTINA!! The Wheel of Time is one of my favorite series, dude! If you were interested in something similar yet equally AWESOME I would recommend The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, the guy who finished the Wheel of Time!

  4. Omgoodess, The Korean Toast Episode. Oh man, I thought of that instantly. In Canada, someplace between Markham and Toronto I had something similar and It was atrocious. Although the Episode was funny I felt so bad for you both, you ventured out on such a cold night in gleeful happiness only to be met by something oh so disappointing and unappealing. lol, and the sexy food porn shots of the obscene toast, I don’t even have words. Not sure how long you both had to wait to get your meals, but if it took longer than 2 minutes, thats too much time (the literally cut a slab of bread put it on a plate, covered one with ice cream and one with cheese). Sorry to bring back bad memories. Hope you both feel better soon. Sending You two some Positive Vibes.

  5. The FAPFAP’s you guise really disliked was the Mountain Dew Cheetos it was so awful and that other time you guise also had the Korean Toast too.

  6. You must read The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Seriously, soooo good. If you are into audiobooks, they are great too (I generally hate audiobooks, but these are really well done). Martina, I’m about half-way through the WoT series. I’d never read them (I know…shame…shame!!!). I used to get through books so quickly, but these are taking forever. Being an adult stinks sometimes. I’m such a granny. I read a few pages at bedtime and…zzzzzzzzzzzzz….

    Have a beautiful day!

    • I have an Irish wolfhound and people keep telling me to read this series, so I guess I better get started!

  7. for the answer to your question, I would say, hands down the worst food adventure time for awesome people would be the fermented stingray (with Josh and Olly). Like that was hard to even watch :S Literally super proud of you guys actually trying it!!!

  8. I think that there is a contender between the dreaded FAPFAP Korean Toast and the FAPFAP fancy fruit, where both had high expectancy of pleasure, however both had sad, sad consequences. :)

Best lines from the Korean Toast episode:

“That is more bread than a person should consume.”
“Who eats the crust of bread?” – “You do when your entire meal is bread.”
    “Cheese should be savour cheeze.”
“Just hit a random Korean guy in the head” *Throws cheese bread filled napkin.”

    • Oh and have you guys read the new Harry Potter yet?

      • Haven’t read the new Harry Potter yet. Just got it yesterday but we had to edit this video. Today we can read it!

  9. Question, I was wondering if Japan is a plus-sized friendly country in your opinion? Also, hope you guys feel better soon! ♥Snowy

  10. I’ve read all 21 or however many books there are in the Anita Blake series. I have to say towards the middle a few really were not much more than vampire/werewolf porn, but the newer ones are really good. And I love the character of Anita Blake, she is a complicated kick-ass female character. The books made me question a lot of common preconceptions we have about women and relationships, love, sex and violence.

  11. I can think of a couple of FAPFAPs that did not end with happiness. The Korean McDonalds v Taco Bell v Lotteria with the sadness of the Bulgogi Burrito the epic fail of the Double bulgogi burger (McD’s) both of which were not finished due to said sadness. The Lotteria while the best of the bunch shortchanged you on fake crab meat nuggets by only giving you 5 instead of 6. I do also remember the not so good Secret Soup Dumplings that you made your final comments on outside about them no being sealed right. And a FAPFAP at Mr. Pizza which started with Martina being happy because 2pm were the endorsers and there were posters of them on the outside but the Pizza was overrun with corn came with a cookie scone crust and blueberry sauce and sadness ending with Martina shouting you Lied to me 2pm

  12. Simon and Dan are just Cheaters MacCheatersons. Martina should have won this challenge. Mayonnaise is use to kill head lice.I would personnally go for olive oil instead. It’s just less disgusting imo. Thank you guys for making me smile every week.

    • I agree totally: the mayo suffocates the live adult lice (you leave it on for 5 mins at least & has to be applied thickly) as well as aids in the removal of the eggs from the hair using a fine toothed lice/flea comb. **NOT AN OLD WIVES TALE**

  13. Loved “Narcissus in chains” I also loved Simons description. This isn’t your mothers romance, lolz. Hope you enjoy it.

  14. You guys just did not like the Korean Toast fapfap, Martina especially. I don’t know if it counts but the fermented stingray episode with the Korean Englishmen looked really bad ಠ_ಠ

  15. The Korean Donkatsu Challenge! None of you managed to finish it at the 15 minute mark and Simon suffered even more after trying the spicy donkatsu, though not as much as the cute Korean guy who ran off in sweats in the blooper video.

  16. Ah! Totally squealed when I saw Rachel and Jun! I really enjoy their videos too. I’d say the failed food adventure would be the pizza videos cuz gosh darn it, Koreans love corn pizza. (To be honest I love corn too >_>)

  17. I think almost all of your attempts at eating korean pizza has gone somewhat wrong o_o
    Get well soon, guise!

  18. I don’t know if you guys would be interested or not, but my Mom’s go to for food poisoning is to take one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (don’t use white vinegar) and add it to a bottle of gatorade or apple juice (you can even add it to water but it tastes nastier) and sip on it. The vinegar is supposed to help kill off the bad bacteria in your stomach or something. At any rate, its helped me feel better quicker just about every time. It looks like you guys are starting to feel better anyway though. Fighting!!!

  19. Hey guys!!

I think my favourite fapfap that you didnt like was aaagggeeesss ago, I remember you did a korean look around all the fast food chains like McDonalds and Taco Bell, and compared them to the Korean food joints (shout out to Loving Hut, literally too delicious) and you really didnt like the Bulgogi burger in McDonalds, I dont even think you both tried it (kai bai bo’d for the taste test I think). That was my favourite one, it helped me a lot when I was in Seoul, I actually stayed right next to one of the vegetarian restaurants you reviewed (and loved) but thats beside the point,

    Anyway, have a good week,

    Ollie

  20. …And you guys were both talking about how boring and uneventful your lives were last week. I hope you’re both on the mend! Can you get Gatorade (or Pedialyte) in Tokyo, to keep your electrolytes up?

In terms of FAPFAPs that ended in varying degrees of sadness….

The first time you had ‘secret soup dumplings’ in Seoul – you both mentioned they weren’t sealed right. :(

The Weirdest Korean Pizza video (from Pizza Hut and Mr. Pizza) that you filmed in the studio. SO MUCH WAS WRONG on those pizzas.

  21. I think Martina definitely dodged becoming an Urban Legend there with “Pliers Man”! Whew!!! Glad that you guise are feeling better now :*! Okay, since everyone seems to be saying “Korean Pizza & Toast”, I’m going OG with Bucheon’s Sala Thai Restaurant Review (it wasn’t “technically” a FAPFAP since it predates Martina breaking her ankle by “erhem, saving the mermaid who was drowning outside of the fountain” ^_~). It was a FAIL because you guise went there & spent what was at the time a lot of money for food that just wasn’t that good. The restaurant’s closed now since their food just wasn’t “always delicious in all ways”. You were both disappointed with the experience “Worst Thai Food Experience Ever”, if I recall correctly lol. That one has my vote! The funniest worst failed vids imo were the Coffee Prince WANKS ^_^! Love you guise — stay safe, eat safely & always be *you*!!

    • I forgot to add that the review is filed under “Food Adventure” here on the Eat Your Kimchi Website. (Fingers crossed because I’d reeeaaaallly like to win a capsule toy or a Samurai Spudgy or a Beckoning Meemers sticker ^_^!)

  22. I was wondering if you have met any people in Japan who are deaf/mute?

  23. Not a FAPFAP fail in the traditional sense perhaps, but Simon ate ALL the Donkatsu Kimbap and left Martina with only two pieces. This still makes me giggle, only because Simon stuffing his face while Martina is talking was hilarious.

  24. Hihi! I love asking my friends mundane questions for comparison to my own life. What is your cleaning routine like? Who takes care of which chores and how frequently do you do them? (Sweeping, cleaning the toilet, dusting, etc) I have always admired Japanese organization and cleanliness, especially SPRING CLEANING. But since Spring is far off, are there any new cleaning routines or habits that you learned in Korea or Japan? And how do you guys tackle the boring adult cleaning chores together?

    Thanks! :3

  25. hi, i really love your Eat your sushi segment… I’m so happy that you are enjoying your lives in Japan… I’m originally from Czech Republic, currently living in Japan and loving it as hell!!
i’m sorry about the food poisoning… though, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a fault of the curry… my stomach hurts in summer here too… guess, it’s the temperature and moisture we’re (well, i for sure :DD) not used to….
i’m sort of envious of your neighborhood, i live in smaller part of Tokyo too, but the only person i regularly talk to is my landlord… well, he’s awesome, so it’s okay, but that sort of friendly neighbor starting conversation with you is something i sort of look up to…

  26. Hi Simon and Martina, Its really nice to know that you guys are getting better and hopefully in the future, you will be careful.

So to answer your question, one of the FAP FAPs u guys did not enjoy were the Korean Pizzas. it was one of your earlier videos, when you were in Bucheon and you guys decided to visited Mr. Pizza and saw 2PM endorse the chain. However, the Pizzas were horrible. you guys choose the Montand 4rangeah which is a combination of 4 types of pizzas and well, it was downhill from there for you guys.
Also later, at your studio, you ordered pizza from two different chains, i think it was Pizza hut and Mr. Pizza again. Again, it was not so nice for you guys.
Hope thats the right answer and keep rocking guys. Has japan offered you good pizzas yet? :)

  27. I was so excited to learn that Martina is reading the Wheel of Time books..I have every book and it is a wonderful series. They are supposed to be turning it into a t.v. series soon.

  28. There was that Korean pizza video with corn and pumpkin with blueberry sauce https://youtu.be/3TA5jB174fg and the one with old school Korean candies. When it comes to REALLY bad food experience on Youtube (for me) it was the one with fermented stingray on Korean Englishman’s channel https://youtu.be/aFRUoygkaeI And the wasabi kitkat with Amber https://youtu.be/RKUce3vZteo

After all of that, I think the stingray would be the worst bar none. :P Thanks for the books you mentioned, as I am currently looking for what books to read next. ^_^ Looking forward to each video you make, I find them very uplifting.

  29. Hey ~
There’s one fapfap video on Korean fast food ~
There’s the bulgogi burrito from taco bell that was way too sweet!
THEN the double bulgogi burger from Mcdonalds… That didn’t look.. or taste good.
Lastly, The red crab nuggets from Lotteria ~ .. OH and the European burger QQ
Another video was about Korean pizza! You two went to a chain that was endorsed by 2pm ~
Your first pizza was Shrimp gold that Martina enjoyed because of the shrimp, but thought the rest of the topics were too overwhelming.. Simon felt that it was too sweet and the blueberry sauce was also a big no-no.
Amy Rib .. also very sweet! Just different then what you’re used to lol ~
THEN SECRET GARDEN – Martina’s least favorite. Corn everywhere.
And, lastly… Potato gold.. ALSO A BIG NO NO.
One more video involved some Korean Toast ~ ( the gross one :’) lol )
One was covered in Cheese and the second was covered with some sugar and chocolate ice cream~
But, it was basically just.. bread everywhere !

  30. You both really need to read Worm if you are craving something well written about superheros (and villains). https://parahumans.wordpress.com/table-of-contents/

  31. The first toast place! You guys went and it was a bummer. In the case it looked fabulous and delicious, but then when you got it….it was horrible. Because of how bad it was you guys tried again and went to a better toast place so you could show viewers that not all toast was bad!

  32. A FAPFAP you guys didn’t enjoy would had to have been the Korean Spam. All three kinds onion, garlic and bacon (because Korea has a variety) weren’t that good but Martina only ate three pieces of the bacon spam out of sheer hunger.

  33. I remember the first fapfap you did for Korean pizza, from years ago. It was mr pizza “love for women” being advertised by 2pm, and it had a cookie crust, entirely too much corn and blueberry sauce? Just why… you had to go outside to do your final comments because you were afraid if anyone spoke English, their feelings would be hurt lol

  34. I think everyone’s go-to is the fermented shark but I’m going to go with a different route. Instead my answer is the bizarre pizzas from the Korean Pizza Hut and Mr. Pizza (F.A.P. The Weirdest Korean Pizzas). Pizza Hut had the Cheese Opera (bacon, spinach, cheddar and smoked gouda cheese, with cranberry and apple sauce, and with surprise raisins, pineapple, corn and under-cooked meat!) and Mr.Pizza had the Seafood Island with cream cheese mocha bun (shrimp, scallops, squid and lemon sauce with hidden mushrooms!). Martina said that Pizza Hut’s was the worst thing she has ever willingly eaten in Korea ans Simon said was the WORST pizza in his ENTIRE life. Poor SooZee and Leigh they were subjected to torture when you forced them to have a bite. And don’t forget that those tiny pizzas were like $30 each!
I hope we can have a Japanese edition some time soon!

  35. But the mayonnaise curing head lice is a home remedy – believe me I had it slathered on my head wrapped in saran wrap for an entire afternoon as a last ditch effort when I was in elementary school. It seemed to work for me.

  36. It’s the “Weirdest Korean Pizza” FAPFAP! I remember y’all hated it so much lol Corn in pizza? Sweet potato crusts? YUCK and YUCK!

  37. FAPFAP Fail: Korean Toast! That was traumatizing for me. I love toast, and I didn’t know that it was possible to have bad toast. This was one of the most eye opening for me: sweet bread with cheese and parsley or chocolate ice cream. I totally avoid the garlic honey bread too. Traumatic ;(

  38. Oh man the mayo thing for head lice… I remember getting lice around 4th grade. My mother did the mayo thing on my head and it was awful. American mayo especially smells really gross after a certain point and it is really thick (not delicious. Japanese mayo definitely is!). Definitely one of the worst experiences I have had. Only benefit was I got to play Paper Mario on the N64 for several days haha.

  39. Simon and Martina, have you heard of Black Pink?

They’ve only debuted a few days ago and are earning quite the hype. Some are even calling them the next 2ne1! I want to know what you think of them so far.

Also, what do you think of the English used in kpop songs now? Especially since a lot of kpop groups seem to have at least one member who speaks English fluently, like Seventeen, BTS, Got7, EXID, etc.

  40. Regarding Pokemon Go:

I find that trying to level up by encountering Pokemon in the wild can be a very long process since they can be very spaced out in urban areas. Plus you end up encountering the same ones over and over if you keep exploring the same areas each day.

The best way to encounter Pokemon more frequently, and also come across rarer ones, is to find areas with a very high density of Pokestops. Possibly ones that are within a few seconds walk from each other. If it is a crowded and popular area, chances are that someone will have set up multiple lures there. If you keep walking around the Pokestops you will almost continuously get Pokemon popping up. It is probably why your friend had more luck in Shinjuku, as I am guessing there must be a large concentration of Pokestops there.

Me personally, I am not a fan of leveling up too quickly. Main reason is that it takes a lot of work to capture even weak Pokemon at higher levels. I think leveling up only helps you find Pokemon with higher CP, or be able to upgrade your Pokemon more, which will aid in gym battling. If you are more interested in just collecting them, then I suggest taking your time to level up.
