Japanese Ramen Taste Test

Hi everyone!

So this is a bit of a different kind of video. Meghan from Strawburry17 was coming over to Japan for a vacation, and we invited her and her friends over to Kichijoji so we could show them around, and then we shot a couple of videos together in our house :D

Funny story: we actually met her at the Sailor Moon Cafe! When we were in line, she was already seated. She came out and talked to us for a bit as we were waiting in line. We didn’t even plan on meeting there! Just a pure coincidence. If you check out our video, she was actually sitting somewhere to the left, behind Martina. I’m not sure if you can see her, though.

Anyhow, we talked about some ideas about videos to shoot together, because she’s fun and we have similar interests, and this video is what we thought of. We haven’t really had any cup ramen in Japan, and if we were going to try something new, it would make sense to shoot it with Strawburry, since she also tries new things – oftentimes Japan related – on her channel. Fun! And what better to try after Ramen than alcohol? Sure, we could have tried desserts. Actually, we should have tried desserts now that I think about it. But alcohol makes sense, too!

Also, this video is by no means a comprehensive look at Japanese Cup Ramen. There are hundreds of them. We just ate four. But we wanted to try some from different spectrums. Fun and quirky, different style of noodle, higher end, etc. Just check out the supermarkets when you’re in Japan and you’ll see how many cup ramens they have to offer. We’re actually really interested in trying the fresh ramen packets they have. You can add your own toppings and everything. Maybe we should try those next time!

I got a little distracted. Ahem. After filming, we all went out to Bakawarai, which is where we seem to take everyone that hangs out with us in Japan. They loved it! Of course, because Bakawarai is awesome. We just took Chonny there over the weekend. No video out of that, though. That was just playtime :D

If you’d like to see Martina and Meghan try out some Japanese alcohol, check out the video below!

PS I’m pretty sure it was peach, not mango!

OMG I had that umeboshi alcohol for the first time yesterday and I loved it! Funnily enough it’s actually called “men’s ume” so Martina wasn’t far off when she called it an old man drink.

An instant noodle that you should try is the chicken one! It’s got really distinct packaging – orange and white stripes with a little yellow chick on the front. It’s special because the packet version of it had the noodle shaped with a little dip in the middle for you to crack an egg into. That way the egg stays right in the middle of the noodles instead of slipping off. Pour hot water over and it cooks the egg juuust right :)

  4. I am enjoying this like you would not believe! I just found you guise 2-3 days ago randomly while looking at tiny house tour videos and have been binge watching you all’s stuff since. So much fun! I was like “who are these people? I’m fascinated!”. I wish I had found you all when I was a dorm mom for Korean and Japanese and other students from all over the world, we would have had a weekly EYK/EYS watch party! Keep it up you both are awesome and it makes me so happy to see you all doing what you love to do with life and are enjoying it to the fullest!! (p.s. Nabi is my Korean cat by adoption and I also heart Spudgy and Meemers!

  5. Would the Pikachu ramen make it through customs if you sent it as one of the challenge prizes along with a capsule toy?!? I loved Martina’s shirt & thought it was so sweet that she loaned Meghan her chopsticks since she was the “guest” <3. I got distracted by Meemers halfway through lol — he's so adorable! I wish Spudgy made an appearance, but I guess since there was alcohol coming up "no children" were allowed (Meemers has his doctorate degree, so I guess that was okay). ^_~ thank guise for keeping it fun!

  6. That Pikachu one is amazing!!!! Is that ramen special edition like a lot of other items in Japan?

  7. In Poland we call ramen a “chinese soup” and people consider it as an unhealthy, cheap, not so tasty meal which people (mostly college student) eat when they’re broke. But I don’t think they are as good as real japanese ramen.

My father is Vietnamese and when I saw him adding egg, spices and meat to “chinese soup” making it taste 100% better my life has changed forever.

  8. It’s like you guys read my mind! I was JUST going back and re-watching your old ramyun videos because I have been super craving ramyun. (I’m caving and getting some for lunch today – yay for 7-11 in USA caring Shin Ramyun!)

Thanks for the video! I wonder how much of the ramen you guys actually ate. Lol. So…much…SALT!

  9. Really liked the episode this time. The chemistry between Martina and Meghan was really great haha. They actually look the same (especially with the blonde + color hair), so it was like watching Martina and her sister together!
    Great one!

  10. Really enjoyed this one, I always try to make my partners Shin ramien with a processes cheese slice and a bonus egg added in.
This video makes me hope we move to a place that has a fun Asian supermarket so I can add more fun shit to his shin ramien

  11. Okay, I had to pause the vĂdeo to comment this… but “pica” in portuguese is slang for, erm, male body parts XD so when she went “Pika juice” and talking about pika milk I pretty much died XD

    • OOOMMMMMGGGGGG. Flashbacks to when we described pepper spray as “gochu” spray to our Korean students and it also is slang for penis…

      • Dear god the memories!! Martina making dakgalbi and the many videos involving “gochu” have ruined Gochujang for me. I can no longer keep a straight face at my job ever again lol

  12. As for cup ramen I am thoroughly impressed by the many ways it can be prepared. I personally liked these food reviews because as someone who eats packaged ramen almost daily (mostly because bills in Texas are so gosh darn high) I figured I’d put in my two cents and say that most ramen here could definitely use an update. The only way of getting anything out of the ordinary is to buy from an asian market.
