Korean Hula Hoop of HELL!

We’re in Jeju at the moment, as we’ve been on our road trip since Monday, which explains why we’re not posting as many videos this week. I’m sitting down on the couch at our AirBNB now, and, as I write this, my body is covered in bruises. My sides and the front of my body are all peppered with dark purple spots, like a small meteor shower of pain, all over my midsection. Soo Zee didn’t have a single freaking bruise. Not one. She felt no pain. I really don’t understand why. I mean, I’m a grown ass man. I can endure pain, but this was really bad. But Soo Zee didn’t groan once, and her skin is immaculate. Someone please explain! It’s totally unreal.

I really want to understand the reasoning behind this Hula Hoop. I get that a heavier Hula Hoop would result in more energy needed to use it, so you burn more calories. Got it. But those wheels of pain? WTF is that all about? Seriously: how is this supposed to help you lose weight? How is it NOT supposed to be deathly unpleasant? I feel like a Korean person read about this in a medieval torture book and thoughT “damn son, this shit is dope. Let me sell this!” and then became rich off of it. WHAT THE HELL!? I need a scientist or doctor or at least a med student to explain this to me. I’m hurting.

I kinda think that Martina knew that this Korean Hula Hoop of HELL was going to be so painful, as she used it before when she was a teacher, so she pretended not to be able to Hula Hoop, and just wanted to watch me suffer. Though, I’ll admit, it was worth it. I had a great laugh watching this video. Leigh says it’s her favourite WTF ever, though I still love the Panty Hat Challenge more than any other.

If you’re ready to bring the pain to your friends and family, you can pick it up on Gmarket and get to bruising your midsection! Otherwise, we’ve got an extra scene from this video on our app, available on iOS and Android.

We’re gonna be in Busan next, and should be back in Seoul by Thursday. We’ve filmed lots of great stuff so far. Holy smokes Jeju is beautiful! And the food here is phenomenal. AH! You’ll see soon. You’ll see :D

  4. 3.02 the dude disappeared!!! lol
Tbh these hoops are quite commonplace in the fitness world (I have a similar one myself), so marketing it is a ‘Korean’ Hula Hoop isn’t strictly true…
I think the wheel/ball things are for muscle toning….? Maybe it’s psychological, the more pain you feel the more fat you feel you’ve burned….idk
Anyhow great video…. I’ve owned my hoop for six months and Simon can still do it better than me *sobs*
Hope you’re having fun in Jeju~

  5. 1. “I feel like a Korean person read about this in a medieval torture book and thought ‘damn son, this shit is dope. Let me sell this!’”

I feel like this is a totally historically accurate statement, right down to the phrasing.

    2. I’m in awe of Soo Zee’s mad hula-hooping skills (and her adorable shorts!).

    3. Simon, I agree. The Panty Hat video is still my fave WTF of all time. I have it saved on a youtube playlist called “Things to Make Me Laugh” because no matter my mood, you can’t be upset when faced with panty tug of war and EYK banter.

  6. Soo Zee was awesome doing the hula hoop, right in the beginning she looked like Ga In in the Abracadabra video. Really, the hula hoop almost looked like it was self powered in some spots. She was laughing so hard in some areas, I was like how is the hoop still moving, though I especially liked the little dance she did. So funny.

  7. Haha my abs hurt from laughing :)

    Time for another whole cheesecake

You guys ever see the rave hula hoops? With all the pretty lights that make different designs at different speeds? Some GoGo dancers I know use them a bunch, but they seem to be very expensive ($215~).

    O_O;;

  8. I absolutely love my weighted hula hoop. I can go for up to 30 minutes without dropping it (and I’m definitively on the heavier side). Of course mine doesn’t have the knobs, although I have seen them sold in Canada. That looked really uncomfortable.

  9. I’ve seen that hoop in a couple stores near where I live… I never see anyone buy them.

  10. I’ve seen those hula hoops before on Running man and always want to try it once along the acupuncture mats.

  11. Oh nononono! I just went to Hmart (Korean-American grocery store)and they had a bunch of those for sell. I stood there and looked at those weapons for like five seconds and bolted! Nope! Looks painful! But I enjoyed watching you guise use it! And Soo Zee made it look easy!

  12. I realise this is a little off topic, but just joined before vacationing to Korea, binge watched your entire YouTube channel. You guys are funny as hell hah! Please post some nice places to eat or visit in Busan, going there tomorrow! Props for the great blog and videos, love it

Grrr, international shipping is not available. Why do you show me such wonderful things that I can’t get?

Hahahaha…I have such a hula hoop too but never tried it because my flat is too small. Possibly it was for good when even Simon got bruises. I bruise very easily due a condition and even carring a heavy book box will get my legs green and blue. I would love to see my doc freak out after using that hoop >.<.

  15. WHY CANT I WATCH YOUTUBE! NOT THE YOUTUBE! Thought I can watch this on the blog…but why is my YouTube not working!

    • Is it working yet? I clicked on it and it works for us! Anyone else having problems?

      • I think it was just me, I turned my iPad off and on and it worked. (^O^)

  16. Man Soo Zee must have become impervious to this Korean torture in her childhood. But I agree who the hell looks at a hoola hoop and thinks “You know this thing needs wheels added to it”. It’s something Tim “The Toolman” Taylor would think off. I can understand adding weight, hoola hooping is good exercise, adding weight only makes it better. But the wheels probably do nothing but smash into your skin.

  17. XD I just laughed so hard at the first 5 seconds of this video just imagining Simon hulahooping
When I saw it I laughed even harder. Though it must hurt a freaking lot.
    Well done Soozee well done!

  18. Hahaha this is hilarious xD
My mom has one that’s similar to the one you used and it actually works!! As in you, you actually lose weight. My mom used to be able to do this for like 45 minutes with ease. At first it’s hard and she had really bad bruises as well but she ended up loosing like 10kg just by using that hula hoop everyday, barely eating bread and just eating a little healthier in general lol.

  19. You guys, I have to agree with Soozee. I have one of those, and it might be uncomfortable at first, but definitely nothing to scream about! And Simon, you actually got bruised?? What??
I am genuinely surprised. I can’t think of anything that we Koreans do on a regular basis that could make us immune to this hula hoop…
Must be some sort of genetic superpower.

  20. I tried this hula hoop at my friend’s parents’ house when I was in Korea! It is IRRELEVANT how skilled you are at hula hooping — THE PAIN GOVERNS ALL. Ohhhh how it hurt.

  21. LMAO! I just got an angry wisdom tooth removed and when I heard the “you’re so big I have to pull this back” … “If I had a nickle” bit I laughed so hard and the PAIN! Ugh curse your charming/dirty sense of humor Simon and Martina!

  22. As part of the male demographic I say: thank you for bringing Soo Zee back :) And that intro with only audio? man do I have a dirty mind. I laughed a lot, thanks guys.

  25. Talk about hardcore, Soo Zee rocked it! This reminds me of the videos on the Korean food massages, the pokey back self massager, and the spiky hand massage balls that you guys did. So much pain…so much pain.

  26. I just looked at one of those at the local Korean market two days ago. I bought spoons, garlic and cookies instead.

I can’t hula hoop either. The dogs leave the room quickly with eyes averted when I try.

  27. So I’m not sure if this affects anything, but Simon and SooZee had the hoop rotating in opposite directions… Maybe it hurts more going one direction than the other?

  28. Simon, No pain, no gain!

More Hula Hooping with Soo Zee vides please. Maybe just have her in the background for all of your videos happily hula hooping along.

  29. This is beautiful. I remember seeing one of these in the dorm gym at EWHA…I stayed far away. I have an weighted exercise hoop, minus the death rollers, and it does enough bruising even with the padding. 50pts to SooZee for making that type of torture look like a walk in the park.

  30. Are those pokey bits wheels or knobs?

    • They’re wheels. Also, your avatar is glorious!

      • Wheels? That’s even worse I think. I am glad you like it! I just think Spudgy is so inspiring. Gonna stop talking now before I start babbling.

  31. Oh Wow, That looks painful just watching it. I used to be able to hula hoop when I was a kid, but that just looks like torture. Hope you heal soon Simon.

  32. LOL the counting was waaayy off for Soozee

  33. omg…that comparison shot of soozee and simon was priceless. i was laughing so hard!
i actually saw that scary-looking hula hoop at my local korean grocery store. idk if i want to buy it. simon made it look super painful @[email protected]

  34. I want this!!! I know my husband and I would be having competitions to see who could endure the longest. I’m so bummed that Gmarket is only shipping it in Korea though. :(

  35. I am legitimately laughing my @$$ off. The BF wants to know if this nets SooZee 50k more dating applications.

    • That’s our guess. This will definitely please the Soo Zee stans :D

      • Dating applications? Psshaw. Is Soo Zee going on the EYK Tour? After that performance, you need special security and a separate entrance line for people proposing. Buy your rings, rent your tux’s, the time is now. Soo Zee is flying back to Korea with 8 husbands.

  36. The G Market says international shipping unavailable… *rage*
