WTF – Korean Selfie Sticks and Remotes

Hi guise! We’re publishing this while in our changeroom at Hallyucon in Amsterdam! We’re about to go on in a couple of hours. Eep! We’re nervous. How about we publish a video to calm our nerves a bit? Yeah. Ok. That’ll calm us down. For sure. Errr. Ahh. Breathe. Slowly. Deep breaths, Simon. Deep breaths. I SAID DEEP BREATHS!

Ok, I think this is one of the most useful WTF items we’ve ever featured. I have no clue how common these are in your country. Maybe they’re all over the place now, I don’t know. I remember people gave us weird stares when we used the pervert stick last year in Singapore, and now, over the past month, we’ve seen these things everywhere. So, are they common where you’re from as well? You’ll be seeing us with this in our European Tour pics. I wonder if people will look at us weird for using it?

The remote is also pretty freaking perfect for this, too. We didn’t have the remote back when we first got the pervert stick, so we could only use it for videos, but now we can actually take a bunch of pictures. Awww yiss! I don’t know what size phones it’ll accept, though. How much wider are the iPhone 6 Plus models than the 5s?

There’s also supposedly an app for the remote that you can download separately, but I have a thing against downloading apps. I hate it. I barely have any extra apps on my phone. I like keeping it as clean as possible, and only installing absolutely necessary apps. So…maybe I’ll give the app a shot. Or if anyone else here has tried one we’d love to know if it worked for you. It’s called the Camera360 app. Yeah!

  1. Tbh I find it ridiculous :/ Every time I see Asian tourists (of course also tourists from other regions, countries etc. but not nearly as often as I see Asian tourist with selfie sticks), I see this selfie stick and it looks a bit stupid to me… What happened to the good old times when you could just ask someone else to take a picture of you? 1st you get better pictures and 2nd sometimes you involve yourself in a minimal form of interaction with other foreigners/inhabitants.
And if there’s no one, maybe you could just enjoy the things you see without necessarily having to take a picture…
I’m really sorry if I offended anyone, it’s just my opinion >.<

  3. Hehehe. Man, I see couples with these EVERYWHERE here in Korea. A friend explained that they are especially good at making sure one’s face doesn’t look too big when taking a selca. And I am pretty sure they are mandatory if you are dating someone. I actually even saw a girl the other day with a cellphone case that matched the selca stick – it was all matchy turquoise. It also explains why Koreans are so boss at taking beautiful selcas. Not the matchy part, but the ubiquitous use of selca sticks.

  4. This was released on the day of Hallyucon and I happened to be around a stand who was selling them at the convention and they sold out in 2 hours maybe? xD Did you start the trend here?

  5. I’ve seen a few people with them in Japan, but i wouldn’t say it’s “common” quite yet. it’s pretty cool though. but i’d probably be too lazy to carry one around :p

  6. I kid you not I was just in Jeonju for some teacher training and everyone had them out in the Hanok village! Half my group also scored some for only 5,000 won!

  7. I think the fact they were featured on an episode of “Get it Beauty” (the one about how to take fancy photos of yourself so you look your best on social media – my goodness, I am so old – is that something people really put a lot of thought into now?) might have a lot to do with their stratospheric rise in Korea.

FYI – they are so popular now they are specifically banned from K-Pop tours and concerts – YG Family Concert security confiscated them from bags at entry! But inside they had drink counters with plenty of straws – I reckon you could construct quite the superstraw selfie stick if you were so inclined. Or just pass your phone to the people a few rows back and get them to take it for you.

  9. I’ve seen this in WGM! Jae Rim and So Eun use it a lot…. :D

  10. I use camera360! Don’t have the selfie stick to go with the app but I use it to edit a majority of my Instagram photos. It’s pretty useful. I like to keep my phone clean as well but the app seems useful enough to keep. I need to get me one of these sticks!

  11. Congratulations on 600k subscribers you guys!!!

  13. Meg

I have never seen anyone using these in Arizona, though most people have heard of them obviously. They’re actually kinda mocked here lol. Only because it’s seen to be VERY tourist. Though I think most people accept/agree that it’s useful for bloggers like you guys, but if we see just normal people taking selfies (especially by themselves) they are definitely being mocked a little. Though not in a horrible way, just in a “how silly just for a selfie” kinda way? I’m coming off as really horrible in the post now that I think about it lol…

Let me try to explain better. OK Examples! So my friends and I are walking and we see a family or group of friends using this for, say, the Grand Canyon. Ok we think “total tourists. That’s a cool way to take vacation pics.” My friends and I walking down the street and someone whips this thing out sitting at a restaurant “ok that’s a little extreme and silly.”

Does that make sense? Time and place kind of tool over here.

  14. I was in Prague last week and saw a whole bunch of tourists using this stick. I had no idea this is so insanely popular everywhere because in Poland I have never seen anyone with this thing!

    • I also saw a bunch of them in Prague! I also see them elsewhere but in Prague it was excessive. Maybe because there were many tourists in general XD

  15. I’ve never seen this, but such a great idea!
I wish I had it when I went on my trip to LA by myself. So many times I wanted to take pictures, but I’m so bad at the kind where you hold at your arm. Selfies definitely are not a talent of mine.

  16. those things….

I’ve seen some people use this thing at a Chinese restaurant I was at…. my parents saw and they honestly thought people who use these are pretty stupid/lame.
Dad said my cousin should get one of these because she posts selfies of herself like 3-4 times a week on her facebook/instagram.

I strongly dislike selfies. While I’ll admit I’ve done a few, I see no reason to anymore. Why do people feel the need to make a duck face doing them? They’re ugly. Also I don’t care about seeing someone’s face all the bloody time. It just.. screams narcisscism after a while…

  17. I need this!

  18. Ha Ha I was laughing so hard when you scared Leigh. I realized today that I may have been watching you vids to long cause after Martina said oh this one is longer then ours. I was waiting for Simon to say that’s what she said. I was sort of sad it never happened. yeah I have seen the perv selfie stixs every where when I was on vacations this year.

    • Me too! The bit about length…what a missed opportunity! Bet they are banging their heads with their palms now going “Ayayayaya!” (Mamacita style).

  19. I’ve actually seen these, but pretty much only in use with GoPro cameras. I think the only time I’ve seen people use it for selfies with their phone was when I was out on vacation and there were foreigners from Korea or China.

  20. I don’t think these have made it to the midwest yet. It’ll probably be the next big thing in like 2 years lol.

  21. the one i got has the button in the handle with the Bluetooth built in oh and you can make it look like some one else is taking the pic if you hold the stick with your legs. my father in law loved it when i hooked it up with his phone. he used it a lot in the airport before we left to come back to the states.

  22. OMG i got one when i was there it was my favorite purchase cause i was able to take pic of me and hubby when we where there!!! so useful when it comes to sight seeing. bluetooth ones in hongdae where cheaper.

  23. I saw some fans actually use the selca sticks to actually record a fancam so they could get it above everyone’s heads lol

  24. Yep, literally everywhere. I’m so tempted to buy them. Sooooo tempted.
And Simon, you nerd, referencing the Diffusion of Innovations theory. Thank you, it made me happy haha.

  25. lol I have this exact stick. Some guy from my base bought a whole bunch of them from Singapore a few months back, and sold them in out resale page. I didn’t get the clicker though because he didn’t mention he had them until I went to pick mine up and I didn’t bring enough cash… : / It’s definitely a lot harder without the clicker. >_<

  26. Did I hear Leigh saying “Scheiße” at 3:24? Props for learning German cuss words before going to Germany!

  28. Cheat Code Tip!

To take selfies with these kind of things on an iPhone you can also use the remote on your headphones/earphones. The volume up button is the shutter button

  29. I really wanna know where in Korea you found the ones with remotes!!! I would totally be down for that! It’s what I’ve been waiting for lol.

    • Most places that you buy these will have the remote sold separately. Its around 11000 won but most people totally think its worth the price.

  30. EVERYWHERE!!! THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!! At the Jinju Lantern festival there was about 100 different places to buy them from. People were literally selling them out of suitcases on the street. Everyone had one.

    • THAT’S where I saw them…I couldn’t remember what video I had been watching. It was one of your videos…
