Teen Top – No More Perfume on You: Kpop Music Mondays

Let’s begin by saying that this is our least favourite Kpop video ever, that we’ve ever reviewed, ever. EVER. The first thing we thought of when we started looking closer at the video was this cat:

WTF

As you may recall from our Supa Luv review, we were really disturbed by the guy in the shower, who looked was acting like a pedophile. We were quickly corrected by swarms of angry people who told us that it was Eric from Shinhwa, and he can’t be a pedophile, because he’s Eric from Shinhwa! His purpose in the video wasn’t to gross out those who don’t know who he is (re: mostly everyone outside of Korea) but to appeal to the older women. Teen Top, in its essence, is a teenaged band. Their main demographic, as a result, would be teenagers. By including a sexy old guy, then women will like Teen Top and their music, because there was a sexy old guy in one of their videos. It makes perfect sense…in somebody’s mind. FYI, our next post is going to have a picture of John Cleese, because we find that our 50+ audience isn’t really that strong. Surely, having a picture of him will get the older demographic hooked!

Anyhow, Teen Top’s brilliant management decided to take this one step further. Now, those older women, the noonas, who have been hooked into loving the band because of a cameo appearance in a music video, have now transferred their love of older Eric to younger teenaged boys. The classic bait and switch! Oh you thought you’d get to be with this sexy older guy! Ha! No! Here’s a teenaged boy instead. Is anyone else getting uncomfortable with this? The older noona in the video is clearly unhappy with the exchange, since she looks utterly freaking miserable throughout the entirety of the video.

Pedonoona from Teen Top

Oh look at the joy in her eyes! She loves dating young boys!

So let’s all agree here: the marketing strategy here tried to overreach a bit, and in trying to appeal to a wider demographic, has crossed into some really creepy territory.

Next, what in the butterslaps is up with the terrible message of the song? Don’t wear perfume because my younger girlfriend will suspect me of cheating on her? Is the older girlfriend supposed to be ok with this, with the fact that her twerp of a boyfriend is blatantly cheating on his younger girlfriend? And he can tell her what she can and cannot wear? Is this really the message that a teenaged boyband – whose main audience is teenaged girls – really wants to send? Hey! Young girls, remember: Teen Top doesn’t really like you anymore. They’re into the older ladies now! Great way to alienate the people who support you the most!

Also, how about the fact that the scumbag blatantly breaks his younger girlfriend’s heart. Remember? The cute one that was introduced to all of the members of Teen Top, where they were all laughing together? Great way to crush that girl, douchebag. How easily do you think she’s going to be able to trust another guy in the future? How much of an awkward strain did you just put on all of the relationships she will have from now on? What did she do to deserve such horrendous treatment? Why couldn’t you call her beforehand and break up with her kindly? Instead, she sees you at the club with another woman, and all you do is smile at her like an inconsiderate ass?

Seriously. This song and video and marketing strategy are so royally messed up that this is without a doubt the worst video we’ve ever reviewed. There’s next to nothing good we can say about this, apart from the fact that the melody’s a bit catchy, but we’re so opposed to everything the song and video stand for that we can’t even enjoy the song at all. Teen Top’s management, stop this stupid crap. Give them some good songs they can all equally sing and dance to (rather than just having two main singers and what looks like a bunch of backup dancers), and stop trying to appeal to an older audience. You chose the name Teen Top, chose a bunch of teenaged boys to be your talent, so work with what you’ve been given. You can’t feed vegetarians meat, no matter how you try to season it, without making them sick.

Anyhow, on a less angry and upset note. Here are the bloopers from this week’s video! We were going to include that singing scene right after we said how singing about cheating on your girlfriend might make it acceptable, which is why Simon sings a song about robbing Martina’s house with his friend, Ronnie.

  2. Must say I loved Spudgy in the background. He was watching his humans looking back and forth between you two and then it was like he almost sighed “They’re doing it again” and put his head down for a rest. So cute!

And obviously SHINee. (I died when Simon said “All of them. SHINee fans, you know what to do”).

  3. SHINee beats scumbag cheater any day of the week!!!! :D

  4. I’ve never heard of Teen Top before, so I can’t really jump to their defense or even say this made me want to listen to them lol. But I loved the thing about SHINee in the end. Oh, and the “Sexy Hey” was hilarious!

  8. actually they have like 2 singers and 2 rappers. although i love the other members and i think theyre nice people, i agree that they dont really do much. its mostly niel and chunji. and the rapping is just l. joe and CAP:/

  9. I was really irritated when I found out that Neil and Chunji do most of the singing in this song. They’re a band they should all get parts. This reminds me of the MV for Chocolat’s Syndrome and how most of the song and video is Tia.

  10. Why they didn’t do a video for one of the other songs on their album I have know idea. The song Beautiful Girl is a perfect Teen Topish song it’s sweet and NOT about cheating on someone. They should have just picked another song to promote, one that is better for their image anyway.

  12. well, obviously shinee would make better boyfriends (ALL 5 OF THEM) because they’re not scumbag cheaters like teen top. lol. anyways i was really thrown off by the meaning of the lyrics when i heard the song. it definitely made me  do a 180 on teen top. i was just like, “you’re telling people how to cheat? really?! what the flux?”

  13. Hey it’s a horrible message but I love the song and love the video.  Call me a poophead if you want. It’s cute catchy and obviously false. Besides I think it’s about a guy who kinda likes this older girl he knows and so he hangs out with her all all all the time. Then one day his GF was all hey why you always hanging out with Lady Macbeth you’re supposed to be my bf. Since he knows Lady Macbeth isn’t going to get with him for another 3 years or so he just asks her to lay off the makeup so his gf will stop freakin out. So when his gf actually walked in on him in teh bar it was for their date because he isn’t dating Lady Macbeth he just has a crush on her and is only with his gf until Lady Macbeth realizes that he is a man and is willing to date him. then he can drop the younger girl for his one true love. Like Taec from Cinderella’s Sister.

I heard that the actress in the MV talked the director out of a kissing and/or topless Teen Top scene I can’t remember which one. But yeah their management company is crazy.

  14. “i was promised a date with Eric but got stuck babysitting this guy instead!” <—lol! i love this caption! so that's what his role is supposed to be! i was wondering too the hell he's doing in there! never a teen top fan, starting from the very catastrophe their name's gonna bring. I never could understand what are the roles of most of the boys except for the 2 that sings and the 1 that raps. they sure are generous with their backup dancers, bringing them into every songs and MVs.

  15. i agree with everything you guys are saying about this video…except the fact that you say “PEE-doh” (as in pedo-bear). it’s “PEH-doh” with a short ‘e’ sound, guys. you guys aren’t even fobs, there’s no excuse for that.

  16. totally agree with you guys… catchy song, creepy lyrics. I obviously vote for SHINee :)

  17. yess, ironic how enjoyable GG’s “having an affair” is, eh? hahahha i’m just joking, i TOTALLY 100% agree with this video…^^ but it was awfully serious! i didn’t laugh enough :( the bloopers, however, i LOVED ;)

    SHINee!!!!! <3

for next week please do "rocket girl" by stellar…it's brand new and hilarious!!!! ^o^
they proudly exclaim "LOCKET girl" (classic rookie mistake) and "here it GO" (nice subject verb agreement…) and about 4 minutes in it sounds strikingly similar to Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO or GG's "im having an affair"….hahahaha. anyways its pretty interesting. ^^

  18. I find it extremely creepy that femme teenage BOYS are singing about make-up and glitter…If they really felt like they’ve become men, they’d be worried about hickies…

When I showed this to my students during break-time, I had to look away because watching barely pubescent girls go ape-shit over this would have made me want commit ninja suicide…

  19. It just occurred to me how ironic it is that they danced to GG’s “I’m Having an Affair” in their last blooper video…

  24. I still can’t help but really like this song because I don’t understand the lyrics, so I can look past that (as others have said). As for watching the video, at I still can’t help but like it because is has a story that I can actually follow. And it’s believable (minus the minors in the bar). The only thing I wish would’ve been different is when Chunji gets caught and he just smiled. In most other videos about cheating there is some sort of remorse shown at the end, thats what I was expecting and it never came. After watching your review and learning about how old the actress is, which I definitely couldn’t tell, really creeps me out. The idea of cougars is kinda really disgusting to me.

And, SHINee all the way!!! Would’ve voted for them anyway. They brought me into Kpop and I adore them!

    • Oh, and the part where they turn around and ‘sexily’ put their hands in their pockets…way too girly for my tastes, I make fun of it every time I watch the video.

  27. First time commenting here! Been creeping silently for a while now haha, one of thosefans :c anyway first of all love love love EYK of course :) and yeah now about the song – what is this crazy shit I don’t even D: I honestly loved the song from the moment I heard it, since my Korean comprehension is only decent, but the video was like “excuse me, what just happened + chunji DNW to see your teeth every two seconds”. and when I got to the lyrics… just ugh, same sentiments that have already been expressed here. still can’t help but love the song though, because it’s hard to take them seriously since they’re so damn young lol it just seems too ridiculous to be legit. and lastly, doesn’t hurt to say it again I guess – WTF MANAGEMENT.

  28. thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for this!!! how long I waited for someone to say something about this stupid song!  yes! it is catchy if you don’t know the lyrics or haven’t seen the video, but man, isn’t it the most awful kpop song ever!!!!! do this kids even know what they sing!????? I got so angry first time I saw this …… THANK YOU!

  29. Thank you thank you for saying all I thought and more when I first saw this video. Just to add to fuel to the fire here, the actress playing the “noona” in the video is Park Si Yeon, who starred in Coffee House. And her age? **drumroll** THIRTY-FRICKIN’-TWO!! At 32, she’s technically old enough to be the mother of the youngest member, age 15 (if she’d been a teen mom, that is).

Anyway, my vote is of course for Shinee for the showdown :)

  30. I’m glad you guys stuck to your guns on this one. I can imagine the pressure to love every video is pretty extreme when you have so many people requesting but let’s be honest, a terrible message is a terrible message. It’s a bit disappointing to see some people still looking past all that and liking it anyway. Maybe I should write a song about stabbing people in the face and selling it to a K-pop group. They’ll know what to do with it!

  31. SHINEE!!! of course!!!

Honestly the song and the video are sooo bad!!!

  32. aish I actually LOVED the song since first hearing it but the video threw me off. I still really like the video because although I am TOTALLY OPPOSED to cheating, I love how they took such an awful situation and made me not hate them (I blame chunji with all the smiling and winking, I was just so confused with all the mixed signals)

I guess this song is maybe giving older ladies the idea that in a fantasy these teeny-boppers would choose them noonas over their same-aged lady friends?

Oh well, I wonder what their next cutesy-awfully-awkward song concept will be? Drug dealin? lol

    Spot on, too!

  34. Wow! I opened the site at 6 in the morning today and due to being half asleep, I read the title as “Teen Top: No More Music Mondays” and that nearly gave me a heart attack

I have a couple of requests / suggestions

    1. A link to the video you are reviewing would be great. I know I can always type it out but I usually watch Music Mondays on my phone and typing is a pain :P

    2. Once in a while,  I would really like you guys to review a video that YOU are excited about. I loved the top KPop dances for 2009 because they were your choices, not ours. We want to know what new Kpop video Simon, Martina and Spudgy are excited about

As for the showdown, I vote for Shinee

    • That’s sort of what K-crunch is. While not necessarily a review like Music Mondays, they still talk about them.

      • yes, but it rushes through 4-5 videos in 5 minutes. I want the funny video impersonations, the English rating and the whole outrageous interpretation on the dances.

  35. ONEW. ONEW SHOULD WIN. ;D Shinee makes better boyfriends to be honest, cause Onew is cute. <333333

  36. ok your all looking at this wrong
Simon and Martina i completely agree with you cheating is bad
BUT your hating on this song a little to much it taught me a lesson i don’t think it was promoting cheating
but showing us girls what to look out for, now i know if a guy has perfume or glitter on there clothes to be extremely cautious because he’s probably cheating on me
i never would have thought about that until i watched and heard this song i would have been the stupid girl to just brush it off and forget about it
beside after listening to i like it by enrique iglesias that song disgusts me there is no lesson to be learned from that song so, No more perfume on you doesn’t bug me, i completely understand your pov, but i look at this song in a different way i guess

    but i vote for SHINee
