Kpop Music Mondays One Year Anniversary

First off, we want to take the time to thank you for all of your awesome support. This is our 52nd Music Monday, our one year anniversary of doing this show, and we didn’t expect it to be where it is today. We first started the show, because many people were asking us to do more How to Dance Kpop videos, and we thought that we’d do it for a couple of months. But everyone’s responses were phenomenally supportive and encouraging, from your fan pics, to emails, to comments, to relentlessly spamming us lovingly on Twitter and Facebook to get us to review your favourite artists. Really, thanks everyone for liking this show and giving us the inspiration to keep on scripting and filming! To show our thanks, we’re having our biggest giveaway ever, which we’ll explain at the end of the post.

But first, our One Year Anniversary Special! We usually just talk about one video for Music Mondays, and we usually count your requests to decide who we review, but today we’re doing the videos we want to do, the videos that didn’t get enough votes to win for the week. We’re doing, finally, UV’s “Itaewon Freedom” and Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication.” We were going to dedicate our entire anniversary special to just one, but – hell – we feel so strongly about both videos that we had to do both.

Itaewon Freedom:

This is the greatest video ever made. That is all.

If we ever got the money and crew and equipment to direct a Kpop music video, we’d make this video. If we had money to make a second video, we’d make this video again.

What makes this video so awesome is its context. Really. Kpop videos have been over-saturated with sexy boys and girls looking sexy on camera, doing sexy things and making sexy face. They train for countless hours to perfect the crispiest choreography. And we get that with just about every Kpop video that comes out, and – really – we get something like two to three kpop videos being released per week.

This video comes as a breath of fresh air. For those of you that don’t know, UV are actually well known comedians in Korea, and they’ve been around for a while, but this is 100% our favourite song by them. You got three older guise that aren’t necessarily the sexiest Korean guise out there and who aren’t necessarily the best dancers (although JYP’s guest appearance is prettttty awesome), all creating a rockingly entertaining video with crap sets and bad effects.

So for those of you that also don’t know about Itaewon, it’s a district in Seoul near a USA army base, so it has developed into a very foreigner friendly neighbourhood. It has import grocery stores, real foreign food (like authentic Indian food and the Irish Wolfhound Pub), and a foreign crowd. So, Korean people that go there can really let loose and act “foreign” which means, dress however you want and enjoy the non-judgemental atmosphere. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it can sometimes be preeeettttyyy sketchy on the weekends after everyones been out drinking and dancing and *coughpickingfightscough* so we don’t really like that neighbourhood as much as we love Hondgae. But still, if you live in Korea, you learn to appreciate how Itaewon can comfort you when you feel homesick. That’s why Itaewon Freedom has ranked as a favourite amongst many foreigners in Korea that aren’t into kpop music. *Martina wipes away a tear and sucks it up to buy a super overpriced can of root beer*

One of the things that’s difficult for us when talking about this video is in saying anything funny about it. UV are comedic geniuses, and they’ve pre-emptively took all of our jokes from us. What can we say about it? Their outfits are bad? They wanted them to be bad. That their dancing sucks? They know that it sucks, and make it awesome in the process. That their special effects are silly? You don’t get that bad by accident. Being this bad, is an artform.

The video’s outdated, looks like the worst that the 80s has to offer. And the guys are too old to compete with the likes of young kpop boyz. But they take their weakness and make it their strength. It’s so…inspiring. Sure, they’re not taking themselves seriously. They’ve got the blanket of irony protecting them from criticism, but – hell – that doesn’t make this song less awesome.

Furthermore, they’ve got JYP, Overlord of one of the top Kpop labels in Korea, singing and dancing with them. That’s what really makes this song and video special for us. JYP, who knows the kpop scene very well, takes part in a kind of anti-kpop video. It’s just so…poetic. Too awesome for words.

Intoxication:

–Note–This is the shorter version. Why it’s shorter, we don’t know. Probably because it’s too sexy to air in its entirety.

Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication” holds just as special a place in our hearts as Itaewon Freedom. We can’t begin to tell you how much we love the song. It’s epic. They lyrics are epic. The video is epic. The dancing is epic. But we don’t love it because it’s good (< ---speak for yourself Simon). We love it because it's sooooooo bad, but - unlike Itaewon Freedom - it doesn't mean to be so bad. And because of that, we love it even more. Don't get angry at us, Junsu fans. This song is ridiculous...ridiculously sexy, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable. Junsu has written the Korean equivalent to 90's R&B...which Simon grew up listening to:"DO YOU MIND IF I STROKE YOU UP? I don't mind...*punch*---OKAY! SIMON IS CUT OFF!!!! We were amused rather than aroused (<---speak for yourself Martina), but our amusement is endless. And, in turn, our amusement turned into love, pure, pure love for this song. Some people might be confused about the bananas joke. Nowhere does Junsu ever mention that he wants to rub bananas in the song, but the story behind it is this: when Martina was playing it on loop within the first couple of weeks of being introduced to the song, I - Simon here - heard the song in passing, when in another room. From the muffled sound of it, the part where Junsu says "let me feel your naughtiness" sounded like "let me feel bananas." As well, the part where he says "Momomoto, momomoto" in Japanese, I heard "Not a homo, not a homo." And so, my mishearing of the song led to our laughter, which led to an endless inside joke between us, which has since been translated to our videos. So, no, Junsu does not love bananas, nor does he want to rub them (<---speak for yourself Simon and Martina). But in our hearts, Junsu's passion for rubbing bananas is limitless. And funny side note...a few of my students (Martina) had begged me to play this song at the end of class. Without knowing how utterly raunchy this song was, I agreed. As the video played, my students covered their eyes, screamed and yelled things like, "AH TEACHER!!! DIRTY!!" and "OH NO! TEACHER NO!" and other awesome phrases while I stared on in shock. I'm pretty sure I corrupted about 80% of that class. My bad. Or should I say, JUNSU'S BAD!!! (ps-> got the same reaction from Rain’s “Hip Song”…oh innocent Korea…)

  2. My favorite has got to be Ayy Girl, it was the first ever K-Pop Music Monday that I have watched. It was what got me hooked onto K-Pop Music Monday. I was scanning around, looking for JYJ photos then BAM. I clicked on EatYourKimchi’s Ayy Girl, I watched through the entire thing and by the end of it, I was clutching my stomach in utter pain because I was laughing so hard. The “I’m rolling down my sexy window” line just is like imprinted in my mind over and over again. LOL. Not only that but the Kanye english thing was priceless. HAHHH. Me and my friend was watching Ayy Girl in the library and I introduced her to you guys and she was laughing her bum off, it was epic. She laughed so much she fell over because of Simon’s epic imitation of JYJ running top speed at the camera :D
WHATS YOUR FRIEND’S ATTITUDE, WHY SHE SO DAMN RUDE. HAH~
You guys are awesome keep making videos ^^

  4. I have two very favorite moments that I use in my daily life (and people forever judge me)
    1. Seungri time for KISSES! The epicness of this statement paired with the very lovely(?) styling of Simon in the kpop review for VVIP forever branded this line in my head.
    2. And of course the one that you can use anytime you are in the car (mind you, you get very weird looks) is Rolling my sexy windows down. This can be used as a a pick up line, a come back to a diss, or just for fun. And that’s why I love it so much.
Of course there are tons more but these ones come to mind first.

  5. My fav vid: Xiah Junsu’s Intoxication MV.

Reason: It’s too hot to be ignored, have you seen such a sexy MV in lyrics and dance? ;)

  6. The first video coming to my mind is “Shut up!!” by U-Kiss. It has been my favorite since you uploaded it. I’ve never laughed this much of a YT video before. I even was in school! (I was allowed to, we had recess!)

Why? Well, a little earlier, I watched the music video, and I was like “WTF?”, mostly because of the accent in the beginning. I didn’t immediately like the song either (but that is another story), and U-Kiss was just.. U-Kiss.. But you made me like the song AND U-Kiss. Weird enough, since you made fun the English/song/them/I don’t know.

But still, the review was AWESOME, I’ve never laughed this hard of a YouTube video before (and to think of that I was in school where I try to be quiet, that is pretty well done), and I think that review was the one that made U-Kiss find you(?)(feels guilty, since I actually commented about your review on their video since I loved the review so much.____. But I said that I liked the song! YOU made me like the song!)

  7. My favourite Music Monday’s moment was when you
reviewed T-ara’s ‘Why Are You Being Like This’ and the theme that was prevalent
throughout the whole MV was the T-ara members were stalkers. I especially liked
the part where you parodied the ‘Knock Knock Knock’ bit which Hwayoung rapped
and Martina acted as the stalker who stalked Simon while he was at home. Then
the next week you reviewed ‘Yayaya’ which made me laugh so hard as you picked
on something I hadn’t noticed. The stalker theme appeared again in the video
where they tied the guy to the pole and started dancing around him and he got
upset. Simon in particular made me laugh as he was like that guy did not
deserve to be on that island with the sexy Kpop stars and that he should send
the GPS location to them so that he could be on the island since there were
thousands no millions of men who would love to be in that position and Martina
starts attacking him xD Congratulations on your first anniversary and I hope
for the best for you guys. I loved your recent review on UV’s Itaewon
Freedom xD I love you Simon, Martina & Spudgy <3

  9. Favourite Kpop Music Monday Moment :
Each and every time Simon rolls down his sexy window.

  10. ***FAVORITE KPOP MUSIC MONDAY SEGMENT AND WHY***  Hmm… Because all of the Kpop Music Mondays are great, it’s hard to pick just ONE. Especially with all the times that I’ve seen Simon rolling down the sexy window and the mentionings of TVXQ & JYJ… Anyway, I will go with, “K-Pop Music Monday: Miss A Bad Girl, Good Girl.” Yes, the very first MUSIC MONDAY! ^^ I pick this one, because it was the start of all the other Music Monday videos! It OBVIOUSLY made a GREAT first impression… First impressions mean everything and if the first one would’ve failed, then I’m sure you guys wouldn’t have made anymore. But yeah, like it would’ve failed! You guys are AWESOME! Not to mention. I’m proud of Simon for wearing the same shirt in the anniversary video that he wore on the first video! ^^ It is GREAT! Thank you Simon and thank you Martina. You always make me laugh… “You don’t know me, you don’t know me, so shut up boy, so shut up boy… BEFORE I CUT YOU!”  HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!  BE SAFE AND TAKE CARE!

  11. NO MORE PERFUME ON YOU!! Not that I like the song, but because YOU GUYS MADE FUN OF IT. LOL Definately the best1

  12. My favourite Music Monday Moment was when you guys reviewed
JYJ’s Ayy Girl. It was just too funny. First Junsu’s “MANpron”, then
their was the “they jump so high, they touch the sky and punch a
harmless eagle in the eye” xD and then “rolling down the sexy window”

Ovrall i never saw that MV in the same way after watching your video

    HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

  13. My forever favourite moments will be: from B1A4’s (BILASAAA) OK. *I love youuuuooouuuu* When I was outside with my friend we would randomly start to sing it and do the handmotion. :D
Also JYJ´s Rolling down my sexy window. We actually went many times to a kpop disco and we would dance it there. :D Simon it actually works in picking up guys. ;)
Thank you for creating these epic videos, I showed them to many people since I discovered you! So congratulations for your first anniversary! ♥ (I hope we can even celebrate the 10th together!)

  14. And I’d just like to say how did I just see this video for Itaewon Freedom ಠ_ಠ.  It is so epic I can’t even. Forever love it.

  15. This video is the best! The fact that you have been hinting at these videos for so long and finally we get the whole shpeel complete with robots, the revelation of the hitler-she-banner’s softer, dog loving side, simon again dancing in a wig and a picture of Martina fifty years from now (still checking out those boys, tisk tisk). Mix this all with a grand shirt (yay threadless!) and you have a flavor blasted, brain numbingly awesome video that I will make all my friends watch. ^_^ …honestly I commented both here and youtube but I wants me some socks!

  16. i honestly can’t choose which one is my favourite >.< their all soo unique in their own way, have their own awesome parts and moments. ALL YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME!! (Y) making me choose one of my favourite moments from your many many videos is like life and death for me :D:D

  20. I loved 0330 because it had so much of mordney present!! I find it so hilarious and  creative that you guys thought of something like that xD

  21. Gotta give it up to Shinee’s Lucifer. Someone finally pointed out the use of random English in kpop songs that doesn’t make sense, or has nothing to do with the song. Fun and educational, but mostly just awesome.

  22. I’m a new fan to you guys and I literally fell in LOVE with the both of you. I idolise you so much. Is it even possible to choose a favourite moment? From Simon’s unique, epic t-shirts to Martina’s beautiful hair and fashion sense… it’s too much to choose. You have the same humour as I do – and many others, judging by how many supporters you have – so I think you’re both perfect. Music Mondays are a solid part of my week now. You can just SEE things in MV’s that others miss, so I love to wait and see what your opinions are. I think asking us to choose one favourite moment is too much to ask.

(…but if I had to be brutally honest, I always look forward to Spudgy’s dance…)

  23. Oh my, can’t just pick one as all of them (at least the one i’ve seen so far) are so hilarious. But to pick a few, I love your imitations of the videos’ dances and acting. E.g. Simon when you were doing MBLAQ’s Cry and he was in “a pool”. Very photogenic yes. Or Martina imitating super jealous Hyuna in Bubble Pop! And about the dances, martial arts Lucifer? Cracked. F.A.R.T.s? Cracked. How to dance k-pop style? Died. Plus I love it when the songs have horrible use of English just so you can make jokes out of them! (REPLAY jap. ver. + LEGO= ♥♥♥!)

  24. GAHHH, its hard to choose just one, but the episode that really stuck
with me was the pedobear one, TEEN TOP SUPA LUV, when that mr.pedo guy
order teens from a vending machine, and then he randomly took a shower,
and then they all had funny nicknames xD hehe love you guys! thanks for
    the contest, good luck all!

  26. For the best Music Monday segment, I think that the BIIIIIIILLLLAAAASSAAAAA (B1A4) one was really funny. Ever since Simon said Batoost and Bilasa I’ve been using it all the time. :-) Other than that I was just laughing the ENTIRE video! You guys had awesome points (The guy who is stroking the keyboard, the poster of their secret hiding place, skittles whimsically on the macbook)
My favorite part is………….SIMON’S T-SHIRT! LOL. (Meat is Murder. Tasty, tasty murder.) ;D I always look forward to what kind of shirt you’re wearing each Music Monday. LOL. For this week’s Music Monday, I like Intoxication. Cause, I just LOVE JUNSU. <3 and yeah.
:) And Spudgy dancing the Intoxication dance at the end of the video……..oh the indecency. LOLOL. Keep up the good work! You guys are hilarous. ^^

  27. First, Happy Kpop Music Monday Anniversary! I always looked forward to your videos, and this did not disappoint. This Music Monday was just pure goodness.
I was new to Kpop last year and I was looking for free Kpop podcasts on Itunes since I was broke and it was hard to find some songs, smh, and I found EatYourKimchi instead. At first I wasn’t crazy about it or Kpop but when I saw the B2ST Soom Breathless Edition, I fell in love with Kpop. It was hilarious and entertaining to see you guys point out things I never would of noticed like the “I can’t take my breath” line or the sub-sandwich dance. In all the B2ST Soom Music Monday video started my Kpop obsession, so thank you. ^^

  30. Happy Anniversary! :P

My fav Kpop Music Monday is the one with GD&TOPs Knock Out. Loved the bit at the start where Martina ran out to celebrate (appropriately) estatically by dancing her way through Seoul! hahah especially the part where she stopped to catch her breath halfway through the celebrations, then continued on unperturbed!

Here’s to many more Music Mondays!

Also, the fact of bringing up the jokes that you did in the 0330 to other videos was fonderful to see. (btw, betoost and belasa videos were good too!)

First off! Happy one year music monday anniversary! ITS NOT OVER!!!!!**(stongbadvoice…)**

For your question this week, I have to say my favorite segment was…*drum roll**….T-ara, why are you being like this.I was really in the middle of MBLAQ Cry and this song because both made me laugh just as hard, but…I had to go with this one. Lol…because, common, who doesn’t like the whole stalker vibe from girls?? :p But yeah, from the beginning till the end this entire video had its really funny parts. My favorite part was when Simon received the love letter from martina and it was really a stalker letter…it made me think..what if we took the time to read out loud any kpop song’s lyrics…whoa would that be strange O.o haha, all in all, i LOVED this video..but not in a crazy stalker girl way…just…O.O kthxbai!
