Kpop Music Mondays One Year Anniversary

First off, we want to take the time to thank you for all of your awesome support. This is our 52nd Music Monday, our one year anniversary of doing this show, and we didn’t expect it to be where it is today. We first started the show, because many people were asking us to do more How to Dance Kpop videos, and we thought that we’d do it for a couple of months. But everyone’s responses were phenomenally supportive and encouraging, from your fan pics, to emails, to comments, to relentlessly spamming us lovingly on Twitter and Facebook to get us to review your favourite artists. Really, thanks everyone for liking this show and giving us the inspiration to keep on scripting and filming! To show our thanks, we’re having our biggest giveaway ever, which we’ll explain at the end of the post.

But first, our One Year Anniversary Special! We usually just talk about one video for Music Mondays, and we usually count your requests to decide who we review, but today we’re doing the videos we want to do, the videos that didn’t get enough votes to win for the week. We’re doing, finally, UV’s “Itaewon Freedom” and Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication.” We were going to dedicate our entire anniversary special to just one, but – hell – we feel so strongly about both videos that we had to do both.

Itaewon Freedom:

This is the greatest video ever made. That is all.

If we ever got the money and crew and equipment to direct a Kpop music video, we’d make this video. If we had money to make a second video, we’d make this video again.

What makes this video so awesome is its context. Really. Kpop videos have been over-saturated with sexy boys and girls looking sexy on camera, doing sexy things and making sexy face. They train for countless hours to perfect the crispiest choreography. And we get that with just about every Kpop video that comes out, and – really – we get something like two to three kpop videos being released per week.

This video comes as a breath of fresh air. For those of you that don’t know, UV are actually well known comedians in Korea, and they’ve been around for a while, but this is 100% our favourite song by them. You got three older guise that aren’t necessarily the sexiest Korean guise out there and who aren’t necessarily the best dancers (although JYP’s guest appearance is prettttty awesome), all creating a rockingly entertaining video with crap sets and bad effects.

So for those of you that also don’t know about Itaewon, it’s a district in Seoul near a USA army base, so it has developed into a very foreigner friendly neighbourhood. It has import grocery stores, real foreign food (like authentic Indian food and the Irish Wolfhound Pub), and a foreign crowd. So, Korean people that go there can really let loose and act “foreign” which means, dress however you want and enjoy the non-judgemental atmosphere. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it can sometimes be preeeettttyyy sketchy on the weekends after everyones been out drinking and dancing and *coughpickingfightscough* so we don’t really like that neighbourhood as much as we love Hondgae. But still, if you live in Korea, you learn to appreciate how Itaewon can comfort you when you feel homesick. That’s why Itaewon Freedom has ranked as a favourite amongst many foreigners in Korea that aren’t into kpop music. *Martina wipes away a tear and sucks it up to buy a super overpriced can of root beer*

One of the things that’s difficult for us when talking about this video is in saying anything funny about it. UV are comedic geniuses, and they’ve pre-emptively took all of our jokes from us. What can we say about it? Their outfits are bad? They wanted them to be bad. That their dancing sucks? They know that it sucks, and make it awesome in the process. That their special effects are silly? You don’t get that bad by accident. Being this bad, is an artform.

The video’s outdated, looks like the worst that the 80s has to offer. And the guys are too old to compete with the likes of young kpop boyz. But they take their weakness and make it their strength. It’s so…inspiring. Sure, they’re not taking themselves seriously. They’ve got the blanket of irony protecting them from criticism, but – hell – that doesn’t make this song less awesome.

Furthermore, they’ve got JYP, Overlord of one of the top Kpop labels in Korea, singing and dancing with them. That’s what really makes this song and video special for us. JYP, who knows the kpop scene very well, takes part in a kind of anti-kpop video. It’s just so…poetic. Too awesome for words.

Intoxication:

–Note–This is the shorter version. Why it’s shorter, we don’t know. Probably because it’s too sexy to air in its entirety.

Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication” holds just as special a place in our hearts as Itaewon Freedom. We can’t begin to tell you how much we love the song. It’s epic. They lyrics are epic. The video is epic. The dancing is epic. But we don’t love it because it’s good (< ---speak for yourself Simon). We love it because it's sooooooo bad, but - unlike Itaewon Freedom - it doesn't mean to be so bad. And because of that, we love it even more. Don't get angry at us, Junsu fans. This song is ridiculous...ridiculously sexy, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable. Junsu has written the Korean equivalent to 90's R&B...which Simon grew up listening to:"DO YOU MIND IF I STROKE YOU UP? I don't mind...*punch*---OKAY! SIMON IS CUT OFF!!!! We were amused rather than aroused (<---speak for yourself Martina), but our amusement is endless. And, in turn, our amusement turned into love, pure, pure love for this song. Some people might be confused about the bananas joke. Nowhere does Junsu ever mention that he wants to rub bananas in the song, but the story behind it is this: when Martina was playing it on loop within the first couple of weeks of being introduced to the song, I - Simon here - heard the song in passing, when in another room. From the muffled sound of it, the part where Junsu says "let me feel your naughtiness" sounded like "let me feel bananas." As well, the part where he says "Momomoto, momomoto" in Japanese, I heard "Not a homo, not a homo." And so, my mishearing of the song led to our laughter, which led to an endless inside joke between us, which has since been translated to our videos. So, no, Junsu does not love bananas, nor does he want to rub them (<---speak for yourself Simon and Martina). But in our hearts, Junsu's passion for rubbing bananas is limitless. And funny side note...a few of my students (Martina) had begged me to play this song at the end of class. Without knowing how utterly raunchy this song was, I agreed. As the video played, my students covered their eyes, screamed and yelled things like, "AH TEACHER!!! DIRTY!!" and "OH NO! TEACHER NO!" and other awesome phrases while I stared on in shock. I'm pretty sure I corrupted about 80% of that class. My bad. Or should I say, JUNSU'S BAD!!! (ps-> got the same reaction from Rain’s “Hip Song”…oh innocent Korea…)

  1. I have 2 Favorite Music Mondays: 1. Shinee-Lucifer, That was a great one. The dojo skit was great.
I love it when ya’ll make fun of Dances. Also the hadoken was really funny. Now my other one is Jyj -ayyy girl
I really like this one too for the same reasons as Lucifer for The Dance and the skits.I think that ya’ll really shine
when doing Boy bands Why? because F.A.R.T. All the M-M are excellent, But as soon as you asked me which was my favorite
    Jyj came into my brain.

I just totally LOVED the part of the procedure you had to take to save a people from a burning building. It was soooo funny i watched it thousands of times!!!!!!! I watched it with my friends and they didn’t enjoy it, but who cares!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. The only thing I care about is that you all finally reviewed Itaewon Freedom!!

    Huzzah!!
Way to go Eatyourkimchi! Congratulations on the one year anniversry!

  7. Hmm~ in the blog you wrote what’s the best moment for KMM, but on the video you asked which segment so I’m kind of confused. But I’ll answer to both.

Best segment: It’s hard to choose between Spudgy dance and The Dance segment. The cute overload of Spudgy outweighs, but every time I see Simon’s ‘trying-to-look-irresistable-but-fails’, I always find myself chuckling. So I should say, ‘The Dance’ because Simon brings a long-term inside joke for Eat Your Kimchi fans!

Best KMM Moment: GDTOP’s High High. All the reason because that video was what made me subscribe to you guys, and I second Martina’s fangirl daze during the video because I also felt that way while watching the MV.

Best quote: “This isn’t just a video of bandmates isolated from the opposite sex, and dancing all cutely and sexily with each other so fan boys and fangirls can squeal and pee themselves in girlish delight.” – Simon Stawski

    BATOOST FOR LIFE!!!!

  9. Its hard to pick just one Kpop Music Mondays moment cuz I have way to many favorites. Love Martina’s happy dance in Knockout cuz i can totally relate cuz im such a fan girl too. Thought Big Bang-Tonight when Simon and Martina switched bodies and Simon (technically Martina) gushing over Top was funny, and I liked how you guys interpreted the mv since I thought Top murdering Daesung nd using Tae Yang as an assasin was pretty bad ass…am I right?..no?… >.>

  10. i believe that i could say 1 moment and 1 action actually :D
the moment is the review of Bilasa! LOL
    the flames and the voice!
    LOVED!
and the action would be TVXQ boys’ movements, like “Ayyy Girl” *almost in every video! LOL* and “Max time!” ^^

  11. My favorite Music Mondays moment was probably in U-Kiss Shut Up. It had Mordney Present, man bras, and a Matrix reference, what more could you ask for?

  12. My favorite moment in Kpop Music Monday history would definitely have to be Simon trying to drop his pants in Bubble Pop. Nothing compares. NOTHING.

  13. Of Music Mondays i love super sexy sexy super sexy super sexy sexy edition with TOP~~

But my very very very favorit is JYJ’s Ayyyyyyy Girl! It was great! I love rolling down my sexy windows’s dance ^_^

  14. This
contest poses a really hard question.. How to choose????
But if gun to my head, I have to choose, my favorite episode got to be the one
with U-Kiss – 0330, the whole video is pure LOVE!!!
You guys coming up with that crazy (and somewhat plausible) plot, and Mordeny
makes one of his epic appearances^^
Favorite moment in the midst of all this got be when Simon talks about how math
equations doesn’t fit in with the lyrics of a song, and definitely not in a pop
song. Just to follow that up with a very awesome math poem/song!! You got to
    love math!!!

Love you guys, and I really hope you’ll continue with these videos until 2040,
    at least^^

  15. Congratulations, great success! Spudgy is the best double agent of ALL TIME. And do I spy confiscated bananas behind Censor Martina? Loved loved loved today’s segment – it totally surpassed my expectations (unlike certain MVs that you’ve reviewed, for instance.)

Although I honestly can’t choose just one favourite segment, the ones featuring Count Mordney have a special place in my heart, as I haven’t been able to listen to those U-Kiss songs with a straight face since. And of course there’s the immortal window-rolling and “HAAAA”. And Martina doing the Lucifer dance. Really though, attempting to rank these videos is like trying to choose a single bias from among every k-pop band ever – it can’t be done!

  16. There is no favorite for me. Every single MM was unique in their own way. And they were all funny. If possible, I would say all of em are my favorite. Keep up the awesome work EatYourKimchi! :D

And Gratz on 1 year anniversary!

  17. ‎”Freaking Flaxton Street
which seems to pop up like a mushroom in every Kpop video,”,”They
laughed at me when I said I would open up a kprop shop, but who’s
laughing now? BROHOHO, BROHOHO, BROHOHO!!” Flaxton Street came again in BoM’s video for without you… KProp guy wont leave and is making a lot of money from all these videos

Well I all around love everything about Eatyourkimchi. Especially the WTF’s. My ultimate fave moment in ALL of Eatyourkimchi is the Twonkle Twonkle mug (Not just because I won, because it was awesome!!) But in Music Mondays it would be between Teen Top’s Supa Luv and JYJ’s Ayyy Girl. Supa luv was hilarious since I was watching it with my friend and she LOVES Teen Top and guys just basically crushed her with the pedo bear, it was hilarious! Teen Top and Pedobears/Cougars geez. And then the Ayyy Girl is probably everyone’s favorite moment because of the “Rollin down my sexy window” But I love Kanye West’s rap and the whole HUHHHHHH. Plus the fact that the funny parts of Ayyy Girl that made us laugh in the review is still making us laugh with today’s music mondays. So I’ll have to settle with Ayyy Girl as my all time favorite KMM video~ Happy Anniversary everyone!! Epic socks by the way~~

And I’m gonna have to vote for *Drumroll* Itaewon Freedom!! It was just funny how stupid it was. XD Plus it’s weird that I never heard of either of those videos…

  19. My favorite was GD&TOP’s high high, because after i watched kpop music monday i went back and re-watched high high and noticed a lot more stuff. Loved the body guard part you two pointed. every time i see the video now i laugh :D.
Oh and I vote Itaewon freedom. i mean that video is pure epic sauce.
But I think there are sooo many awesome moments in kpop music mondays, like b1a4 i don’t call them B-one-A-four, i call them bilasaaaaa!
you both are awesome, and congrats on a year of kpop music mondays!!!!

  20. When I first saw Itaewon Freedom, I seriously thought it was old. Like, made in the 80’s. When I saw that it was made THIS YEAR, my mind was just blown.

Anyways, my favorite Music Monday moment was the Secret Garden reference in Big Bang’s Tonight video. I especially loved the part where Simon (in Martina’s body) says, “OH MY GOD, I HAVE BOOBS. This is totally AWESOME.” Her facial expression was epic. And then you see her bouncing across the screen in snow to that really happy techno music. I love that music…

  21. Vote: Intoxication

My favorite is… Teen Top’s No More Perfume On You. THAT VIDEO WAS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. ” WHAT THE F**K, ARE YOU DOING? ”
It showed the reality of the Message and Music Video which was uhmm…………. Anyways, what was said in the video, was really well said and I wanted to hear something like that from others because all I see is ” Oooh Chunji Oppa, You’re so cute! ( for cheating on your girlfriend for an older girl ) ”

Happy One Year Anniversary for Kpop Music Mondays!

  22. waaa there’s sooo many though! >.< I guess I have to say the Martina didn't give my any choice edition with GD&TOP's High High. Why? Not only because is it filled with fangirling, funny dancing, an awesome mini hippo rap, and the best spelling bee ever but because it introduced me to the wonderful world of Kpop…This was one of the first Music Monday videos I ever watched. I just happened to stumble across this video one day so I decided to watch it and was completely confused (I wasn't a fan of Kpop at the time and had no clue who GD&TOP were) sooo I went to watch the music video so I would know what the heck y'all were talking about. By the end I was like "They…are amazing.." And that was the beginning of my Big Bang craze which led to me liking Kpop(:…so without that Music Monday or any Music Monday…I probably would still be living a Kpopless world….Thank you(:

  23. My favourite Music Monday review has got to be MBLAQ’s Cry. Simon as Kpop Merman made me laugh for days since no matter what Martina gave him to lessen his complaints, Simon became more like a Roman toga-wearing janitor in the water. It as well warned me to watch wear I swim, since there might be other Roman toga-wearing janitors in Lake Ontario or the ocean.

I’m not a fan of MBLAQ, but this review actually convinced me into watching their MV and I’m glad that I did since now I absolutely love this song. Needless to say, I actually love all of the reviews you guys make since I’d rather hear a neutral perspective of songs than my friends saying “OMG this song is the best” when talking about their biases.
I’m glad I saw this website a few months ago and I want to wish you guys and Spudgy all the best and Happy Anniversary for your website!!!

  24. My favourite (Yes, I wrote favourite with a “u” DAUM YOU AMERICANS!)  Kpop Music Mondays video was “JYJ’s Ayy Girl”
First of all, thats where the famous “Rolling down my sexy window” dance started.
Like Simon said, it became a total trend!
I can’t watch JYJ’s MV without thinking about the dance, roll down my car window without thinking of the dance.. Its literally stuck in my brain.
You know its a trend when its on JYJ’s wikipedia page and the top comments from Allkpop for JYJ are about rolling down their sexy windows.
Oh, and how you totally slapped Mr.West in the face about his bad english grammar?.. SHAZAM!
Lastly, thank you for showing us how the eagle was punched in the sky… totally cleared everything up XD

CONGRATULATIONS! Wow, 1 year of reviewing kpop, you guys are awesome.
What started as a a few ten thousand views, slowly increased into a few hundred thousand views and if you keep doing what you are doing now, you will reach 1 million views in no time. HWAITING!

  25. My favorite segment was JYJ’s Ayyy Girl. I will never forget their epic falling slow-mo scene, refilmed by Simon. And of course the ROLLIN DOWN MY SEXY WINDOWS!

  26. CONGRATS ON THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!
my favorite k-pop music monday is Super Junior – Mr.Simple because i love this song know. i love it when Martina had the EPIC TRANCE DANCE PARTY with Siwon. and i love the sound effects, and the beginning.(BONERAMA BONERAMA BONERAMA DUH NUH DUH NUH!!)
    You guys are AWESOME!

  27. my favorite kpop music monday video would have to be F(x) “Hot Summer”. I can not stop watching it. Even today, after i moved into my apartment i was all sweaty and it was still summer for me i started to dance the Hot summer dance and i thought of when you guys were making the hot summer mv where the artist were sweat free and the 미국사람 were all sweaty. i think it was very memorable and funny and something i just can relate too lol thank you for making these videos and i love writing about them

  28. Not sure if it’s my most favorite, but it’s definitely one of the most memorable; JYJ’s Ayy girl. ROLL DOWN THOSE WINDOWS AWWW YEAAAAHHHH

  29. HOLY CRAP, so thats where the “sexy” music you used for things came from?!?! Whoa… I am so slow….

I liked the JYJ “Ayyy Girl” music monday.  I actually like the song because of you guys.  It was just soooo funny how you made fun off Kanye West’s english.  Because of the sexy rolling down of the windows dance, it has become a secret hand shake with my friends (even though my friends don’t listen/know of any kpop).  We also yell at the top of our lungs “AYYY GUUURRRL”.  Without that music monday my life would be empty.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!!! Please stay healthy and happy!! Simon and Martina Hwaiting!!! v^-^v

  30. hmmmm……favorite Kpop Music Mondays moment……….   um.  can i just say all of them? i can’t choose :)  i know it’s a cop-out, but i love KMM, i rewatch them periodically, and I don’t think it’d be easy for me to find a moment that i didn’t like. Even when i’ve disagreed with you, i still loved the video.

Not to sound stalkerish but….what…if….I’m subscribed to all of them, can I win in every thread? hehehe… j/k (but seriously…can I?)

AWESOME anniversary edition. It’s refreshing to see you guys reviewing what you want. Gives it a certain pizzazz. Can’t quite explain it. Love Itaewon Freedom, didn’t know about Intoxication – so thank you (really, really, thank you.)

Well, got to go. Need to come up with an extremely-awesome-&-super-magical-fragical-Kpop-socks worthy answer.

  35. Favourite K-Pop Monday Moment…
Ah, there are so many! The Pedo-bear from Teen Top’s video “Supa Love”, the “Lonely” sign in 2NE1’s video that made me reminisce of crappy Monday mornings, the crazy sign guy, and the ventriloquism certificate (especially because of the catchy song: “‘Cause I’m the Spudgy, and everybody wants to hug me”; can’t get it out of my head sometimes!)

But it seems that Super Junior provides you with your best material. Their videos are so rich with innuendo and useful dances!
The manly chore anthem: Super Junior inspired.
The fire dance: Super junior inspired.
The essential clubbing self-defence dance (“block the nuts/ block the face”): Super Junior inspired.
And most importantly, the classic, multipurpose phrase: “BECAUSE I NAUGHTY NAUGHTY”

Super Junior is a Kpop Monday gold mine, yu guise!

  36. hi~~! i really like your videos! well my favourite kpop music monday’s vid was batoost’s fiction XD it was so funny~~ when simon started fanboying and when mordney appeared haha besides i agreed in everything that martina said, like the vampires theory (how can they not sweat after walking for that long?! XD) and the most epic part was the name you would put on the main dance (the pee dance LOL) surely you make me ROFL literally! well i hope i can win something! bye guise! xo
