Kpop Music Mondays One Year Anniversary

First off, we want to take the time to thank you for all of your awesome support. This is our 52nd Music Monday, our one year anniversary of doing this show, and we didn’t expect it to be where it is today. We first started the show, because many people were asking us to do more How to Dance Kpop videos, and we thought that we’d do it for a couple of months. But everyone’s responses were phenomenally supportive and encouraging, from your fan pics, to emails, to comments, to relentlessly spamming us lovingly on Twitter and Facebook to get us to review your favourite artists. Really, thanks everyone for liking this show and giving us the inspiration to keep on scripting and filming! To show our thanks, we’re having our biggest giveaway ever, which we’ll explain at the end of the post.

But first, our One Year Anniversary Special! We usually just talk about one video for Music Mondays, and we usually count your requests to decide who we review, but today we’re doing the videos we want to do, the videos that didn’t get enough votes to win for the week. We’re doing, finally, UV’s “Itaewon Freedom” and Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication.” We were going to dedicate our entire anniversary special to just one, but – hell – we feel so strongly about both videos that we had to do both.

Itaewon Freedom:

This is the greatest video ever made. That is all.

If we ever got the money and crew and equipment to direct a Kpop music video, we’d make this video. If we had money to make a second video, we’d make this video again.

What makes this video so awesome is its context. Really. Kpop videos have been over-saturated with sexy boys and girls looking sexy on camera, doing sexy things and making sexy face. They train for countless hours to perfect the crispiest choreography. And we get that with just about every Kpop video that comes out, and – really – we get something like two to three kpop videos being released per week.

This video comes as a breath of fresh air. For those of you that don’t know, UV are actually well known comedians in Korea, and they’ve been around for a while, but this is 100% our favourite song by them. You got three older guise that aren’t necessarily the sexiest Korean guise out there and who aren’t necessarily the best dancers (although JYP’s guest appearance is prettttty awesome), all creating a rockingly entertaining video with crap sets and bad effects.

So for those of you that also don’t know about Itaewon, it’s a district in Seoul near a USA army base, so it has developed into a very foreigner friendly neighbourhood. It has import grocery stores, real foreign food (like authentic Indian food and the Irish Wolfhound Pub), and a foreign crowd. So, Korean people that go there can really let loose and act “foreign” which means, dress however you want and enjoy the non-judgemental atmosphere. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it can sometimes be preeeettttyyy sketchy on the weekends after everyones been out drinking and dancing and *coughpickingfightscough* so we don’t really like that neighbourhood as much as we love Hondgae. But still, if you live in Korea, you learn to appreciate how Itaewon can comfort you when you feel homesick. That’s why Itaewon Freedom has ranked as a favourite amongst many foreigners in Korea that aren’t into kpop music. *Martina wipes away a tear and sucks it up to buy a super overpriced can of root beer*

One of the things that’s difficult for us when talking about this video is in saying anything funny about it. UV are comedic geniuses, and they’ve pre-emptively took all of our jokes from us. What can we say about it? Their outfits are bad? They wanted them to be bad. That their dancing sucks? They know that it sucks, and make it awesome in the process. That their special effects are silly? You don’t get that bad by accident. Being this bad, is an artform.

The video’s outdated, looks like the worst that the 80s has to offer. And the guys are too old to compete with the likes of young kpop boyz. But they take their weakness and make it their strength. It’s so…inspiring. Sure, they’re not taking themselves seriously. They’ve got the blanket of irony protecting them from criticism, but – hell – that doesn’t make this song less awesome.

Furthermore, they’ve got JYP, Overlord of one of the top Kpop labels in Korea, singing and dancing with them. That’s what really makes this song and video special for us. JYP, who knows the kpop scene very well, takes part in a kind of anti-kpop video. It’s just so…poetic. Too awesome for words.

Intoxication:

–Note–This is the shorter version. Why it’s shorter, we don’t know. Probably because it’s too sexy to air in its entirety.

Xiah Junsu’s “Intoxication” holds just as special a place in our hearts as Itaewon Freedom. We can’t begin to tell you how much we love the song. It’s epic. They lyrics are epic. The video is epic. The dancing is epic. But we don’t love it because it’s good (< ---speak for yourself Simon). We love it because it's sooooooo bad, but - unlike Itaewon Freedom - it doesn't mean to be so bad. And because of that, we love it even more. Don't get angry at us, Junsu fans. This song is ridiculous...ridiculously sexy, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable. Junsu has written the Korean equivalent to 90's R&B...which Simon grew up listening to:"DO YOU MIND IF I STROKE YOU UP? I don't mind...*punch*---OKAY! SIMON IS CUT OFF!!!! We were amused rather than aroused (<---speak for yourself Martina), but our amusement is endless. And, in turn, our amusement turned into love, pure, pure love for this song. Some people might be confused about the bananas joke. Nowhere does Junsu ever mention that he wants to rub bananas in the song, but the story behind it is this: when Martina was playing it on loop within the first couple of weeks of being introduced to the song, I - Simon here - heard the song in passing, when in another room. From the muffled sound of it, the part where Junsu says "let me feel your naughtiness" sounded like "let me feel bananas." As well, the part where he says "Momomoto, momomoto" in Japanese, I heard "Not a homo, not a homo." And so, my mishearing of the song led to our laughter, which led to an endless inside joke between us, which has since been translated to our videos. So, no, Junsu does not love bananas, nor does he want to rub them (<---speak for yourself Simon and Martina). But in our hearts, Junsu's passion for rubbing bananas is limitless. And funny side note...a few of my students (Martina) had begged me to play this song at the end of class. Without knowing how utterly raunchy this song was, I agreed. As the video played, my students covered their eyes, screamed and yelled things like, "AH TEACHER!!! DIRTY!!" and "OH NO! TEACHER NO!" and other awesome phrases while I stared on in shock. I'm pretty sure I corrupted about 80% of that class. My bad. Or should I say, JUNSU'S BAD!!! (ps-> got the same reaction from Rain’s “Hip Song”…oh innocent Korea…)

  1. I really can’t choose because I LOVED every moment of your video. Even the Teentop No more perfume on you. LOVED it. (Really thankful for making me realize the true AWFUL meaning behind the catchy addicting lyrics.)
But if i HAD to choose, My favorite moment would be… probably the BLASA, I mean, B1A4 O.K.That was my favorite song of the month so i was really interested to hear others opinion on the song. So, I went to youtube, typed “B1a4 OK reviews” and I watched ALL of them. No kidding. Im a crazy fan girl like that.(BUT MY HEART BELONGS TO BIGBANG!!!! ESPECIALLY GD & DAESUNG!!!!!!!!!)One day, My brother found or heard about this site and started watching it in front of me.Even thought I was on my own computer, I couldnt help but watch it and laugh. Then few days later after obsessing over your site, I told my friends about this song and I kept saying BLASA instead b1a4 and they were so confused but I did not realize that I was saying it like that and when I finally did, i started laughing so hard.So yes, BLASA is the my most LOVED moment. I mean it will probably change since you guys are so AWESOME but for right now, BLASA wins. ;) HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!!!!! ♥

  2. Technically it wasn’t on K-pop Mondays, but it was when AJ and Kevin
from U-KISS recognized you guys and were super excited to meet you
    >.< Does that count ? If not then when you did B2st's fiction and
you named the dance "The pee dance" haha That makes me laugh every time i
    hear that song :)

  3. I Loved the “Heart to Heart” video review you did by 4Minute it had me dying of laughter every scene, all of  the points that I thought of when I was watching the video you had covered all of them…how did he not mistake a cardboard box for a chair? and all of Simon’s derp faces…LOVED IT!!!!

It’s really hard to pick just one because I also loved the LONELY review by 2ne1…my favorite part is when you are acting out the scenes of what it would be like to live next to a lonely sign…I woke up my entire household when I saw Simon getting out of bed and then he sees Martina with the You Suck sign and the murderous actions and intent on her face and the really climactic music is playing, and also when Martina is encouraging herself and then Simon pops out with the Fatty Fatty Fat Fat sign and once again the climactic music plays.

  4. it’s so hard to pick!!! D: i looked through the archives and each one i remembered something hilarious XD but i’d say the first one that came to my mind was the B1A4 OK. (FT Island is right up there, cuz of Mariston Union Library and the kpop shop. and of course firefighting skills. but i digress.) it is simply hysterical. Skittles “whimsically” scattered across a macbook. “I MADE A BOO BOO” with the 1 backwards. “the hipster, the sporty one…THE UGLY ONE (seungri- i mean…)” hahahaha. this music monday made me laugh the hardest. and it was really pathetically true, which made it all that funnier. the “batcave, no girls” sign had my brothers and i cracking up. (MY BROTHERS, who foster a deep hatred for kpop!) that’s really the ultimate miracle of that kpop music monday- you guys got my brothers to laugh at a video that has anything to do with kpop. :D
    you guys are awesome!<3
please do UKISS NEVERLAND for next week :)

  6. Happy Anniversary you guys!!!! Love all the Kpop videos that I have seen so far. But my favorite would have to be Hyuna’s Bubble Pop because it’s a good song but the dance doesn’t really go with it, as you guys said.

  7. My overall, at this moment, has got to be Super Junior’s Mr. Simple. I’m not a fan of Super Junior nor the music but I have to admit Martina’s epic trance dance party was really… epic, including Siwon and his neon underpants and socks of course. (How could anyone miss that?) I don’t really even know how to describe it! Just pure awesomeness is what this is. But I think this is just one of my favorite reviews, If you’d ask me to narrow it down to one, I couldn’t! You guys are so super, elastic, fantastic, you know? Happy first anniversary by the way! Hope to come many more in the future~. ^^

  22. I love you guys so much, just this summer i got obsessed with K-Pop and found you guys! I’m so glad i found you guys because you guys are amazing and you tell me everything i need to know about Korea and my favorite songs! i love Martina because we both love Big Bang and GD and TOP, and Simon is just so great and funny! AS for Music Mondays, i loved knock out When Martina does the cute little jumps all around the park, and B2st or Btoost (; because as i watched it i fell in love with them, if it weren’t for you guys i wouldn’t of found their amazing songs! Also, same goes for FT Islands Hello Hello, they sing good AND I’m obsessed with Hong Ki from your beautiful, and to find out he sings such great songs were awesome! ( AND 2pm’s Hands up) Sorry if this was too long but I’m your true fan! please keep on doing more Music Mondays and TL;DR Thursdays! ( and the background beat from intoxication sounds like the song you use in a lot of your videos!

  23. Happy 1 year anniversary! The first video I ever watched by you guys was the Music Monday segment on U-Kiss 0330. I stumbled across it while trying to figure out what the heck the music video was about. It took me less than 2 minutes to become a fan (I laughed so hard when Simon described the other members as grumpy stalkers and Martina was just awesome in general) and several weeks to go back and watch all of your videos (I became slightly obsessed and stayed glued to my iPod until I finished everything).  Because of U-Kiss (and Google search and Music Mondays) I found you guys and became a fan. Thank goodness for confusing Korean music videos!

  24. My favorite would have to be Hot Summer by F(x) because it was SO funny and you guys now had me singing hot summer throughout the WHOLE season XD. But I really like all of them because you freely express your opinions while still making it hilarious for your audience. I think that you connect to all audiences (Korea and beyond). In the beginning you guys made videos about cultural things about Korea, but Kpop has got you soaring and I can’t thank you enough. We all look forward to new vids :D This is Gangstagrrr from Youtube!!! Fighting!!!

    • I know, right?! I totally was singing “Hot Summer” everytime the temp broke 80 Fahrenheit (which happens a lot in SoCal).

  25. My favorite Music Monday moment is when Simon tends to randomly come out
of no where and sing Xiah’s Intoxication “Kiss and touch me, rub my
bananas” :DD I say that all the time!!!!!!!

  26. This is gonna sound like a cheap answer but the anniversary segment is by far the best Kpop Music Monday segment you guys made. You should seriously pick a video you guys want to review at least once a month, there are tons of great videos that should be reviewed from the lesser known music companies.

Itaewon Freedom, hands down the best video this year. I was like “wow, why aren’t there any more videos like this?” Your futuristic parody reminds me of an internet meme called The Joseph Ducreaux meme/Archaic rap, in which songs of today are reworded into old English. I totally figured out you were doing “Sorry, sorry”, “rolling down my sexy windows”, and the Kanye rap. LoLs

Lastly, ever since you’ve constantly played “Intoxication”, I was beginning to believe “rub my bananas” was an actual lyric but was disappointed to finally find out it wasn’t. LoL I remember when that song came out I was like “Junsu being sexy?? Nah, he can’t be sexy, he’s the cute member!” LoL But now I’ve seen the true raunchiness of it. Thanks to you guys.

But seriously, the best part of Kpop Music Mondays are the Spudgey dances!!! He beats my dog at dancing any day [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30OJhpJONes] LoLs

  27. Favorite Kpop music monday has to be Bubble Pop, because of Simon’s epic dancing and of course, your great real definitions of the sound effects. It seriously had me laughing for so long.

  30. My favorite kpop music monday has to be B2ST’s Fiction! This was the
very first video i saw. I remember scrolling through allkpop and seeing
references to simon and martina and i had no idea who you guys were! So i
looked up your videos and watched the B2ST one. I COULD NOT stop
laughing. Now, I feel the need to call B2ST Batoost! The moment i heard Simon call B2ST Batoost, i got hooked! The Beast video was
the video that got me subscribing to your amazing channel and your
bonus channel- and i love it!

  31. After watching the video for Intoxication so many of your jokes take on new meaning. Mostly all the “Kiss and touch me” ones. Also, I noticed that the music you usually play at the end of some of your posts (usually where cartoon Spudgy comes out and humps some link that you included) was faintly playing in the background of this song. Nice touch!

  32. My favorite Music Monday segment was when you guys drank that old lady’s drink down the street and switched bodies! I was like ROFL and then Simon says “Oh my god, I HAVE BOOBS! This is TOTALLY AWESOMEEEEE! *running around in the snow celebrating* Oh man, that was SERIOUSLY THE BEST MOMENT IN YOU KPOP MUSIC MONDAYS ROFLLLLLLLLL. I ALMOST DIED LAUGHING !!!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GUYS. I HOPE TO SEE YOU GUYS HAVE KIDS SOON ^_^ SO YOU CAN ADD ONTO THE FAMILY !

  33. My favorite Music Monday episode was F.Cuz – Wanna Be Your Love. The confusion over how to pronounce “F.Cuz” in the beginning, the clip of Mordney getting upset about the man-bra award, and the scenes of Simon trying to court Martina, it was all so amazing. But the part that always stands out in my mind is the English section. “As for the English in this song, we give it a… TOTALLY AWESOME out of 5… Did you SEE the English on that guy’s shirt?! Oh. My God.” Love you guys <3

  39. My favorite moment has to be in GD&TOP’s “Knock Out” review where Martina runs around excited for what seems like 2:00 minutes. It’s something I would do to and I think its what I actually did when this music video was released.

I just discovered you guys like a month ago and I’ve loved all of your reviews and have watched pretty much every video that you guys have on your site. I even watched the one about how to turn on the floor heater in your apartment and I live in California! You guys have inspired me to want to go and tech English in Korea and right now I’m going to be a freshman in college and hopefully once I’m done I can go and teach. Thank you for making me laugh every time I watch your videos and hope that you continue to make many more videos. :D
