Eat Your Sushi – Martina’s Revenge

Hi everyone!

Well, it felt like we had to do it. After feeding Martina last week, we saw people wanted us to try it the other way around, so Martina was able to get her sweet revenge on me this week. Sweet isn’t the right word for it, though. It didn’t taste sweet. The bean mochi were a bit sweet, but that’s about it. That mayo was so TANGY. I don’t remember Canadian mayo tasting so flavorful. That noodle bun, though, is actually not half bad. I had it back when we were in Osaka last year. The concept of noodles within a bun seemed ridiculous, but it’s quite delicious. I was pleasantly surprised. I’d recommend eating it without a bottle of mayonnaise dumped on it. The mayo kinda dampens the deliciousness of the bun.

Also, like we mentioned in the video, this is the last Eat Your Sushi episode for a couple of weeks or so. Martina’s flying out this Wednesday and will come back at the end of May. I’ll still be here in Tokyo watching over Spudgy and Meemers. I would have gone with her, but we don’t have anyone to take care of our animals. So, this will be the longest we’ve ever been apart. A few years ago she had to go back to Canada on family matters, and Martina was just gone for a week. It was a rough week, for those of you who remember the Ice Cream video. This is gonna be two weeks, the longest we’ve ever been apart. In other words, it was nice knowing you. Remember me as I once was: happy and playful, crass and gross, and with celery dangling from my mouth. I’ll be an empty shell of my former self by the time Martina comes back. Remember me.

Ok I don’t want to end this blog post off all sad and shit. Congratulations to this week’s winners! Please send us an email if you’ve won. And we’ve got a fun video coming out this week as well. Yesterday, we also had a fun day filming a couple of videos with Strawburry17, and those should be coming up soon as well. Woot!

  1. Hey Simon,

You can’t buy games on Steam with your foreign credit card, but I’ve been able to put money on my steam account with my US credit card while living in Korea so I’ll bet you could do the same in Japan!

tofu pudding doesn’t count since it was 11:30! technically not midnight…yet >:D

  6. One of the recipes I knew off the top of my head was the Chocolate Coconut Chia Seed Pudding! Other recipes include:
    Chocolate Tofu Pudding
O-daeng or Korean Fish Cake was another one and reminds me of a very pale turd by the thumbnail.

  9. Dear Simon and Martina,
I and im pretty sure everyone else who watched your videos would like to know when you two lovebirds are going to start a family? i feel like with martina’s super happy and fun ideas she would make an amazing mother and Simon would make a wonderful father with all of his witty jokes and playfulness!!!!
p.s. i hope you consider this question for your next eat your sushi

    • They’ve actually mentioned in a previous video that they really don’t have plans for kids because of Martina’s health issues.

    • My guess would be once they aren’t doing as much traveling. It would be hard to do everything they do now and take care of a kid.

  10. Martina’s Rainbow hair!! I love it!! Fits you sooooo well!

Simon’s big frame with Martina’s arms kinda looks like an adorable bearded T-Rex. So glad we get to see this. Also hilarious how he couldn’t keep it together at the celery.

I feel you on that Bobby pin thing Martina. I always find stacks of them everywhere several months later. Lol. And I do the same thing you do with hoodies with my shoes (so many shoes, so many days, so many piles)

So between the never-touch-your-wet-umbrella umbrella bags in Korea and the handy umbrella holder on the (SUPER ADORABLE TINY BABY) cart in Japan – I’m thinking Asia really knows how to handle rain. Meanwhile in America everything is wet and you’re pretty sure going to be walking on soggy cardboard when you enter a store. ‘Merica!

    For the capsule toy answer:
FISH CAKE! (which, I think, is atually Maangchi’s recipe so I was really excited to it being done) Chia Seed Pudding & Soondaeboojigae (which I don’t remember if this was done for a midnight munchies or one of the other cooking segments but I loved it anyway!)

Oh no! I hope things in your family go okay! Sending super warm thoughts and hugs and prayers.

    Hang tight Simon!

  11. You’ll be so happy when she gets home, don’t fret! On an unrelated note, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of sheep sounds to mask cursing. I personally swear like a sailor and am in no way offended, but I miss all the sheep bleating

  12. Gotta say Simon, the fault for the toilet seat lies with you. Lots of people sit without looking. If it is so simple to put the seat down, you should do it.

    • Also, I love the rainbow hair that Martina is rocking, and I wish you luck in your time apart. I’d like to see Simon to a Let’s Play of Fallout 4.

  13. I really feel your pain on the family-emergency separation. My wife’s brother passed away suddenly last month and she had to go home to the Philippines – leaving me alone for what ended up being almost 4 weeks.

It was the first time we’d been apart since we got married almost 15 years ago. What was worse was she was supposed to be back after 3 weeks but got a really contagious form of pink-eye and they banned her from traveling for an additional week.

  14. Midnight Munchies: Eggnog, Dakgalbi, Chia Seed Pudding, Tofu Pudding, Coconut Oil Chocolate, Black Bean Brownies, and Korean Fish Cakes.
Other Recipes: Christmas Hot Chocolate, Jjajang Myeon, Soondubu Jjigae, Pajeon, Dwenjang jjiage, Kimchi (multiple kinds), Kimbap, Korean Ramen, Dok bo ki (as spelled in old title), Anchovy Stock, and Bento Boxes
You’ve also done some packaged things, such as the strawberry curry, popin cookin, 3D chocolates, and chocolate mushrooms.

  15. I forgot to mention how totally cute Martina’s hair is!!! I love how the colors came out! I’m still really partial to the cotton candy+red passion+hot hot pink because I lurvv pink so much & it’s so complementary to Martina’s hair & skin tone but as Hamandeggs23 tagged it, your “unicorn hair” really is awesome!

  16. LMAO!!! Oooo the mayo in the beard…. So moisturizing ;D! Martina did a better job at keeping Simon clean: just smoosh everything into that facial hair…mmmmm, yummy ::rib pain & back spasming laughter::

-for this week’s challenge: only the almost Christmas in Korea how to make homemade eggnog video was actually labeled “Martina’s Midnight Munchies”.

I’ve made all of the other recipes ::NOMNOMNOM!:: with the chocolate coconut chia seed pudding (“Martina’s Midnight Cooking”) being my most favorite — so easy, satisfyingly yummy & healthy!! I make it **all the time** right next to the Korean anchovy stock which I make ahead, freeze & use instead of water when I make instant ramen. I make the Soondubu Jjigae whenever I have a cold with pork or beef instead of clams. Last Winter, I made batches of the Christmas hot chocolate with & without the Baileys that everyone loved ^_^. Thank you so much, Martina, and I would just love it if you made more cooking videos!!! Pretty please?

I hope that everything will be okay with your family & that you have a safe flight to & back home, Martina :*.

Simon, taking Spudgy for his bike rides should get you lots of fresh air & I’m sure that the nice ppl at Bakawarai will be happy to take care of your dinners for 2 weeks & that time will fly while you explore & find new places to take Martina to when she gets back. Meemers will groom all the nacho cheese from your face so that you don’t get too crusty ^_~.

Take care both of you & we’ll be here waiting for your next vid in a couple of weeks. HUGS!!!

  17. I love your sakura hair clip!

For Martina’s Midnight Cooking, you taught us how to make Dakgalbi, Chia Seed Pudding, and Korean Fish Cakes. For Martina’s Midnight Munchies, you made eggnog which I totally want to make, but I will admit that I’m just too lazy for that! I would love to learn how you make your own vanilla extract, though. Vanilla is life.

  18. Okay, three things;
    1. How awesome is Martina’s hair? like aawwwmmmyyygggoooddd!
    2. Martina’s revenge on Simon! #beyondhilarious! guys you should try something similar with Spudgy!
    3. YOU GUYS ANSWERED MY QUESTION!!! YAY!!
Simon, no matter you call my question stupid, Martina, answered it to the T and gave us all a video evidence too!! (hi 5 Martina!)

Anyways, i hope you a safe flight Martina and hope nothing is serious back home. Simon, Im sure Japan will keep you company and your lovely neighbour lady; while your Ducky is away!

  19. I remember you mentioning that you make your own vanilla extract. I am really curious about how it’s done. Could you make a video or put in the recepie in the descrition next time you need to use for your midnight cooking?

  20. Oh no I hope Martina’s family emergency isn’t too bad :( Big hugs to you two, and I hope those two weeks will pass by in a flash!

On a brighter note: Martina, your hair looks fabulous. Like a huge rainbow marshmallow! And I never got to comment on it but since I’m on the topic of looks: Simon, I think you found a beard style that suits you perfectly. You two look great :D

  21. Loving the purple and blue in your hair Martina! Hope your trip home is safe. Maybe Simon can find ice cream places in japan!

  22. Maaaartina your rainbow unicorn hair is LIFE. Did you ever dye your hair before moving to Korea and Japan, or is that a habit you picked up there?
Also, my mom was always adamant about the toilet seat being down. She basically had my dad and brothers brainwashed to keep the seat down at all times XD

  23. Your official Martina’s Midnight Munchies videos are chocolate tofu pudding, chia seed pudding (I guess Martina likes pudding), dakgalbi, and Korean fish cakes! Before that, you called your recipe videos FAPFAPs and you’ve even been making cooking videos since the beginning! (Your first one was dokbeokki which I love).

  24. Martina made eggnog, tofu pudding, and chia seed pudding at midnight. Midnight munchies, midnight cooking, potato, potahto, its all cooking in the wee hours :)

I made the black bean brownies today, to other first time users of carob powder, ehhh stick to cocoa heh… the carob was much sweeter than I thought it would be, so I doubled the recipe without doubling the sweetener and while the batter tasted fine, the final product not so much. Will try try try again with cocoa!

Hope everything goes well in Toronto, happy thoughts!

  25. I’ve had the exact same discussion with my bf about the toilet seat (he doesn’t understand how I could fall into the bowl either ¬¬). I, however, pointed out to him that, mathematically, the seat should be left down, since it is used down more times than up (since only he uses it up to pee, and all the other uses are down) and it was enough to convince him XD

  26. OMG a tricky question XD If we go with the martina’s midnight cooking its only the eggnog video ^^
Hope in right XD Safe trip back to Toronto Martina <3 i'll be there too from the 20th to 23 May for the kcon hope to bump into you :D

  27. Have a safe trip to Toronto Martina. Hope everything goes okay. At least with today’s technology you can stay in-touch with the phone, and Skype & that sort of thing. It’s not the same as being there but it’s something at least. Stay safe, stay well.

  28. Looooooong-time lurker, finally got around to making an account xD
As for the capsule toy question, Martina’s Midnight “Cooking” included Chia Seed Pudding, Dakgalbi, and Korean Fish Cakes. But for Martina’s Midnight “Munchies”, she made some delicious looking eggnog~

  29. Hey guys! I just discovered your channel around this past Christmas and was hooked almost immediately :)

I’m so sorry to hear about Martina’s family emergency, I hope it’s nothing too serious but you guys will get through it no matter what.

Just a few quick questions – are you doing a Toronto meetup? I’d love to visit you! Also if you’re going to be in the Toronto area at the end of May is there any chance you’ll attend Anime North while you’re here? It’s on the last weekend of May

  30. 3 midnight cooking video’s “Martina’s Munchies” you have done are Chia Seed Pudding, Korean Fish cakes and How to Make Dakgalbi :D

    • ….I just realized it was a trick question after looking through the vids silly Nene D: the only “Martina’s Munchies” is how to make egg-nog :D

  31. Martina did dakgalbi, tofu pudding, chia seed pudding, odeng, eggnog, and then you promised to do dukbokki BUT YOU NEVER DID. >:(

  32. Omgosh, Martina I love your rainbow hair :)

  33. Trick question! The only “Martina’s midnight munchies” that was not the black bean one was “How to Make Eggnog!” The ones that other people are thinking of are “Martina’s midnight cooking.”

  34. Simon – You should consider doing a live chat when you usually record the eat your sushi segment. Then you won’t feel as alone because we can cheer you up!

  35. Yay! Glad you liked the package I sent! I’ve been snacking on some Starburst jelly beans too. Hope you get a chance to check out that spicy ramen place I mentioned in my letter. Martina- have a safe trip to Canada!

  36. Omg. Revenge time! *0* can’t wait to see it later! So excited. :D

  37. Chia seed pudding, the easy chocolates that you refrigerate, and the fried fish on a stick (can’t remember what it’s called). From the old stuff (not the late night snacks but just regular cooking) Martina’s video is how I learned to make kimbap and that’s how I still make it :) By the way, love the colors in Martina’s hair!

    • Felt really dumb when I went to look up what the one was called Fish Cakes! and the other was the coconut oil chocolates. I am going to go bow my head in shame now….

  38. 3 of the midnight munchies were how to make coconut oil chocolate, how to make tofu pudding, and my favourite, how to make eggnog, which was hilarious but I couldn`t end up making it because all I would think about is Simon talking about floating pubes haha. Love you guys ^.^

  39. You’ll be okay Simon. Martina will be back and the adventures will still continue. Have a safe and woderful trip Martina much love from Texas!!!

  40. Martina’s Midnight Cooking! My faves are Dakgalbi (which I need to try) and Chia Seed Pudding (it’s a pottery that grows, AND a delicious snack!)

Aside, Martina, you used to make cooking videos making Korean foods…any plans down the line to make a series cooking videos for your favourite Japanese dishes?

Have a safe flight to Canada, and keeping you and your family in my thoughts. <3
