McDonald’s Chocolate Fries

Yes. McDonald’s Chocolate Fries. Technically, the McChoco Potato which sounds like a great DJ name. I AMMMMMMM MCCHOCOOO POTATTOOOO! We’ve seen it all over the news lately, so we figured we’d give it a shot since it is limited edition and so darn weird. And, you know what, they were actually quite good. For ¥330 ($3.30) it wasn’t exactly a bank breaking risk.

They weren’t the greatest thing ever, of course, but they weren’t as revolting as I expected them to be. The thought of McDonald’s Chocolate Fries totally freaked me out, but it just seemed too good to pass up. Nothing like a little bit of adventure!

The chocolate sauce really is the overwhelming flavor, though. The saltiness of the fries pops up occasionally, but it’s not strong enough for a good salted chocolate combination. And we’ve had lots of salted chocolate stuff before and it’s a great combination. This, though, wasn’t as good as it could have been. I suspect maybe if extra salt would be added to the fries beforehand, and then the sauce was drizzled on, then McDonald’s Chocolate Fries would be totally bombastic.

I was also worried that the white chocolate sauce would be gross, because I usually thoroughly dislike white chocolate since IT ISN’T REAL CHOCOLATE, but it was mild enough to not be intrusive. And, hey, part of the experience really is in drizzling both colors on. It’s not just an eating experience, but a pretty visual experience as well.

Also, I know this is our first food video we’ve filmed since moving to Japan, but don’t worry! We’ve got tons of other actually Japanese food videos coming. We’re making a list, doing some research and we’ve already tried about 20 different places in our neighbourhood that were just fantastic! We’ve got some really interesting food videos we plan on sharing, so stay tuned. We just really wanted to share this video with you all since it was just such a strange thing to stumble upon. Lastly, I didn’t see these everywhere in Tokyo. Some other McDonald’s don’t have any of the signs up, so I’m assuming they might not have them as well. So maybe it is limited edition as well as limited to particular locations? Just a heads up in case you feel like trying it out yourself :D

  4. #1….Martina, your eyeliner game is on point! #2…This reminds me of the flavor you get when you dunk fries into a chocolate shake. Preferably Wendy’s fries with a chocolate frosty. Chocolate and potato just go together!

  5. I’ve seen these advertised a lot around Kyoto, but from the picture I just thought they were fries with mayo and BBQ sauce on omg.
You guys should check out Kinosaki-Onsen for a hotspring weekend break, it’s super pretty and near Osaka, so not too far from Tokyo~ Really pretty little town and looootts of hotsprings ;)

  6. I was always kind of suspicious for all this salted-sweet combinations, but you ate them with such an appetite that now I’m really curious to try them! Maybe they’ll become popular eventually and appear somewhere little closer than Japan. It was so nice to see Martina making an order in japanese, you are really living in Japan now! =))

  8. I always thought that McD’s fries went really well with A1 steak sauce and some BBQ sauces, too.

Where are you guys in Tokyo?

  9. I can’t think it would be very different from chocolate covered potato chips we have here in Canada. Which are amazing!

  10. We used to eat chips – proper fat ones – with chocolate custard!

  11. I’m totally down for the weird specialty McDonald’s food videos from you guys! I think your food videos are great. They are informative without being snobby or over the top. I love your open minds and willingness to try different stuff. I work with food professionally, so sometimes reading or watching videos by people that ‘taste food professionally’ is really hard, because they just don’t really get it.

That being said, I’d be all over those chocolate fries. I was worried about the white chocolate too (gross), but I’m glad to know it’s not overpowering. Maybe next time you get them bring some flaked sea salt or kosher salt to sprinkle on top of the chocolate, haha. That might be going too far though.

  12. Martina I’ve spotted your Alpacasso alpaca keychain on your bag! :D I knew you’d like them! (soon you will be collecting them like I am.. and your room will be flooding with them :’) )

TBH this sounds pretty yummy to me. Here in the Netherlands there’s this ‘new” chocolate brand called “Tony Chocolonely” that makes fair trade chocolate and they have this milk chocolate bar which has sea salt chunks in them. I’m not kidding the taste is AMAZING. Just like eating watermelon with a pinch of salt, I don’t see why fries with chocolate sauce would be any less successful.

  13. I once was eating fries with brownie bits because the brownie was too sweet and i thought the potato would make it better. It totally did. I approve of this.

  14. One of my fav fat girl treats is Wendy’s fries and a frosty (chocolate flavored) So yeah… I can see this tasting good.

    • lol meant to reply to you. XD I want to go get Wendy’s now

    • Not a fat girl treat, just a delicious treat! Who doesn’t dip Wendy’s fries in their chocolate frosties? Savages, probably! One day I should go get McDonald’s fries and a Wendy’s frostie and mix THOSE two together, haha.

    • YESSSSS. That is what I was thinking about during the whole video LOL.

  15. Oh how I miss the special McDonland’s meals in Japan… I’m pretty sure I’d like this one because I like eating chocolate sundae with french fries. Also chocolate and salty chips together are delicious!! :D Btw at Tokyo Sky Tree there was a small shop where you could get freshly made chips with different toppings and chocolate sauce was one of them! It was really good! ;A;

  16. Yeah I know to many people that dip their fries in their chocolate shakes for this to suprise me at all. In high school we would throw away the cheese for our nachos and dip our chips I the crappy school chocolate pudding(don’t knock it till you’ve tried it). So I am not all together surprised its not as bad as you thought it would be.

  17. I rarely eat McDonald’s, but when I do I love getting McDonald’s fries and dipping in their vanilla icecream. It’s sounds weird but it tastes good, at least to me. :)

    • I was just going to say this! I used to get Frosties at Wendy’s and dip fries into them. SO GOOD! You’ve got sweet and salty plus warm versus cold, which is all surprisingly awesome together.

  18. Let me tell ya something lol this right here is a cheap foodies dream. Salty and Sweet? Who could ask for anything else? The potatoes should be hot and crispy with a little more salt and there should be a bit more chocolate sauce in the packet. Overall though if this was brought to the US I’d buy it in a heart beat :P

    • I can’t really think of that many salty and sweet combinations for fast food, can you?

      • Salted Caramel, Chocolate covered potato chips, Salted Chocolate, Salted watermelon, ice cream and french fries, Vanilla salt on top of chocolate covered strawberry (a.k.a. Neapolitan fruit of deliciousness), and I can probably make more combos just have to make the right combinations lol

      • Oh yeah, here in the states there’s a burger chain called Wendys and lots of people love to dip their fries into their chocolate shakes (wendys calls them frosties). Besides that I’ve seen chocolate covered pretzels at walmart, but no fast food options like the choco potato.

        • Wendys exists in Canada too. :D I still have dreams about their pretzel bun burger, and their poutine is the *only* decent fast-food poutine that’s worthwhile (they use real cheese curds, not processed shreds).

  19. This is wrong on so many levels.
Mind you, not the wrong of dashing personal freedoms or hurting people, but the wrong of being smothered by puppies and kittens then having someone throw in a box of ducklings.
Hold on while I quietly sob over the crushed remains of my willpower…
