Most Embarrassing Moment in Japan

Hi everyone!

As I write this blog post, I’m sitting on the couch, weak and flimsy. I can barely lift my arms above my waist to type this. My shoulders feel useless. My legs are overcooked noodles. Just two hours ago I filmed my introduction of my outdoor gym. I FINALLY MADE IT! And, oh boy, am I ever weaker than before. It’s terrible. I can barely lift half of what I could lift back in December. Six months and it’s like I’m a newbie at the gym again. It’s ok. Give me six months and I’ll be stronger than ever!

It took a while, I know. I was hopeful with finding a gym around Kichijoji, but every gym I went to said that I can’t join, even if I kept my tattoos hidden. I told them people would never see the tattoos, because I’d wear long sleeved shirts, but that didn’t matter. There were other gyms that were ok with tattoos, but they were a lot farther from home, and, let’s be honest: the farther a gym is from your house the less likely you are to go. But if you build your own gym in your backyard, what’s going to stop you from working out?! And, really, the cost of building the gym is cheaper than going to a gym in the long run. So I’m set! Now to get back into decent shape. I’ve gotten so much softer and weaker in half a year…

On another note, I shared my deepest shame with you in today’s video. You might not see me doing any backwards shots for a while now. I filmed Martina doing one today, and the whole time I filmed it I didn’t even look at the camera. I just stared all around her and looked to make sure that she won’t ram into anyone. Usually we walk so slow that people walk around us, no problem. But now the fear is real. And until I get someone who can see around me to ensure that I don’t bump into anyone, I’m not sure if I’ll be the one walking backwards for a while. I’m just too big for people to see around. AND IM ABOUT TO GET BIGGER SON PEEP THESE GAINSSSSSS.

So that’s it for this week. Check out this week’s Magical Mail Time. We’re probably one more video away from fully catching up to all our packages. We’re almost there!

  1. So I saw you guys said that there’s lots of mosquitos in your video. How are the bugs in Japan, I’m planning on moving there within the next couple of years (once I graduate from OCAD). But I’m allergic to a lot of bug bites (not deathly, they just get really swollen), and have to be really careful when I go outside so I do’t get all red and swollen from the bug bites. I’m from a small town next to Mississauga, and just curious how bad the bugs in Japan are compared to what you’ve experienced in Canada. Thanks <3

  2. Completely agree about staying positive and never giving up. Health issues shouldn’t be belittled but people should also recognize that many amazing people accomplish things every single day in spite of them. The history books themselves will tell you it’s nothing new either. One of my favorite examples being Teddy Roosevelt. He was a sickly and asthmatic child with poor vision (later he would develop even more health problems as he aged) who still grew up to fight in battles, give speeches after being shot, and personally explored some of the harshest terrain in the world he was such and avid outdoorsman. And that is just the iceberg cap of some of the things he did. Point being: there is definitely something to be said about having a carpe diem attitude in life impairments be damned and as long as your happy and don’t mind stretching yourself to your fullest, why should it be anyone else’s problem? “Believe you can and you’re halfway there” – TR

Please for me guys, live well and be happy wherever you are and always set a pace that you are comfortable with. Love ya! ~ Liz

  3. **** MAGIC mosquito and all other flying bug repellent magic***

Cedar Oil, the essential oil kind, you can get it on iHerb. A couple drops on your clothes, and even gnats and foreigner blood addicted Korean mosquitoes don’t come near. Not one bite this summer, and that’s never happened before. Don’t put it on your skin though… too much on your skin over time can make ya feel nasty, not in a good nasty way. (Side note, also great for animals. We soak my dogs collar in a baggy with some overnight every now and then, normally he is covered in ticks and bugs all over his skin, now maybe there are a few unattached ones on his fur… though I dunno what the tick scene or lime disease dealio is in Japan)

  4. There was the watermelon slicer, the tangerine juicer, the video about expensive Korean fruit, the video on how to cut watermelon perfectly (WHICH I USE TO THIS DAY!), and the Korean banana holders (an old but gold video).

  5. Video was called Super Expensive Korean Fruit. It was about the fruit baskets for the Korean new year and you compared a cheap pear to the special holiday pear

  6. Sharing watermelon on some rocks with Leigh, Soozee and the locals. I think it was both a road trip and a WTF watermelon slicer.,

  7. The tangerine juicer video!! You got about 1 and a half, no 2 and a half, wait, you’re so good at math!! :) The nose spout from the tangerine juicer was super adorable and hey, who doesn’t love fresh squeezed nose juice??

  8. I am new to your channel and new to the blog. But I have binge watched ur channel and my fish memory allows me to remember an answer to your latest question. Glooop the answer is you talked about fruit in your Japanese sweets video. At least I think you did lol

  9. Hey so for this week’s question, I remember watching a video when you guys talked about how you went to the store and your plan was to spend a lot of money on meat. However, while at the store you found a mango ( i think it was a mango ) and decided to get that as well. Later you learned that your bill was not high because of the meat but because you had purchased a mango that was like $40… or something. lol. I can’t remember the name of the video but that was the first one that came to mind. If you need a specific video name then I’ll use the “Super Expensive Korean Fruit” FAPFAP as my answer instead. Sorry for the novel. lol :)

  10. Even though the super expensive fruits (apple & pear) was the first video that came to mind, I quickly remembered that time you guys were (just a little) drunk and used a watermelon slicer on a rock by the river with Soozee and Leigh, ending up sharing the treat with other Koreans.

  11. My favorite fruit video you guys have done was the one where you tested the watermelon cutter! In a three-minute video there’s so much going on: EYK family vacation, river-cooled melon, random folks showing up to share the melon, and the moment of unbelieving surprise when the cutter actually worked!

  12. I really miss watching your videos!!! I’m in China now so I’m happily reading your blog posts keke. I’m gonna have to pull all nighters when I get back!

  13. Oi, Simon and Martina!
I remember in the Jeju episode, when you were by a place that grew Hallabong (aka Jeju Orange) and I was really pissed because I love citrus fruit so much, and seeing that a superior kind exists makes me even sadder. And the fact that you picked fresh ones must be even more frustrating to all of us citrus fruit lovers. Rude, I would say

  14. Hello Simon and Martina!
This might be a bit of an odd question and if it’s too personal, you really don’t have to answer. However would you be willing to share the name of the specialist Martina found?
It just so happens that I’m living in Japan right now and I have EDS as well (along with the typical mix of secondary conditions we tend to get, yay for our genes). However I have no doctor, and I honestly wouldn’t know how to go about finding a specialist.
Anyhow, thank you i advance! And I hope you enjoy the nice weather (no sarcasm intended *coughcough*).

  15. Skill Testing Question: Videos about fruit edition,
Well there was the comparison about korean fruit that would make your baby cuter, the video where the EYK Crew went to a river and cut watermelon on a rock, and then you guys went to the orange farm on jeju island (which looked like fairies lived there), There was a really old video of you guys walking around a home plus talking about expensive fruit and other things… =]

  19. Super Expensive Korean Fruit, you guys talk about all normal fruit being super expensive in korea! And the same fruit in ugly and beautiful form for different prices!
12 dollar and 80 cents for an apple and 12 dollar and 80 cents for a pear(which is almost the size of your face simon or the size of martina’s left boob….) ! Com-PEAR-ison! :’D
    You guys are awesome BTW!!!!

  20. I’ve been binge watching all your channels a lot lately while my son naps in my arms (don’t judge me he hates to sleep alone) I’ve been watching your super old videos on this blog too before you became the amazing video editors of today There was one when you were walking around and showing Korean grocery stores and they’re neat sideways shopping carts. And you mention how expensive watermelons and oranges were which surprised me. Then there was one on your open the happy channel where you Simon shows a watermelon holder and he was so cute and excited about it. These may not be the best example. But I have been trying to go back and watch your journey from the beginning as I found you around 2012 when I got into Kpop and stumbled across your YouTube page. I love watching you two run around being all Canadian ey . You have become like my close friends who movies away and send me video updates on their lives. Now I’m rambling any ways. Love you guys and please keep doing what you do so I can binge watch you forever and share your videos with my son when he’s a little older as he is one and could careless right now!!!!!!!!

  22. Ooh, ooh, what video was it. I think it was one of your TL;DR’s where you told the story about the almost $50 mango you guys accidentally bought. And you mentioned it again in your Food in Singapore video, I think. It was a great story that always makes me chuckle a bit, because you don’t really think about the differences in cost when you’re close to farmland/the sea/etc. Until you move and you’re faced with the sudden expense of things that used to be close by and now aren’t.

  23. One of the videos that came to mind is the Personal Tangerine Juicer.
The super cute elephant juicer. Where you guys got 2 1/2 small cups of juice outta the first Tangerine. <3 This was one of the first videos I saw of you two and I love your energy and Martina's Mr. Juice song at the end, haha!

  24. oooooh!!! i know the video when you guys made a WTF with the watermelon slicer/cutter… IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!! random people came to you waiting for a piece of your watermelon… also i remember you cool it “ajuma style ” in the river :D

  25. Does your mouth still taste like Beethoven or Mozart? Yep that’s right it was your Super Expensive Korean Fruit video starring that nasty mangled apple. Does it still taste like Debussy?

  26. Oh!!!!!!! I remember when you guys did the FAP FAP on the Super Expensive Korean Fruit!!! You found out about the fruit when you accidently bought a $40 Melon but realized after you had looked at the receipt. But in your FAP FAP Leigh had picked up an ordinary and expensive Korean pear and apple for you two to test out. Turns out that the $12.80 apple Leigh got was bruised, but it still ended up to be tastier than the commoners fruit haha How is Leigh and Soo Zee??! I hope they are well!!!

  27. You talk about fruit in your “Japanese Ice Cream” video, because the ice cream tricked you by actually just being nutritious fruit. womp womp.

  28. Where can I find that art of Queen Fat Fat Taco Head? It’s so adorable!!~

  29. Another great fruit related video is the WTF- Watermelon Cutter. I have always seen the smaller apple slice cutter in stores here in Toronto but I never knew they came in watermelon size! And I couldn’t believe it actually worked.
Fun fact; whenever I talk to my brother about your videos He can never remember your names or the channel name so I have to constantly refer to you as the “Watermelon People.” That is because it was the first video that showed him.
