Eat Your Sushi – What’s in the Mystery Cans?!

Hello everybody! This is the first episode in which you really get to see Dan. Yahoo! For those of you in the dark, Dan helps us film our Eatyoursushi segments, and we’ve talked about him a bit but we haven’t really shared him on camera. Some of you have been sleuthy enough to find him, and have deduced that he’s in the picture from the Japan Times article we did a while ago, but we never really gave him screen time, until now. IT WAS HIS BIRTHDAY! He was nice enough to come with us to help out when we were in Norway, even though we told him he didn’t have to. We gave him a way out. He didn’t know, though, the amount of birthday poppers we were going to pull on him. We only recorded three. We did it probably 12 times. CUZ THAT’S HOW WE ROLL!

Norway was absolutely lovely. We were there for Desucon, an anime convention, and just had a blast. We did a couple of panels as well: one on YouTubing, and another on living in Japan and Korea, and had a great time talking with everyone. Otherwise, we also had a picnic with a bunch of people from Norway at a big park in Oslo, and it was great! We tried Loompas for the first time, which is – in my opinion – far better than hot dog buns for holding hot dog wieners. WHY HAVEN’T THESE BECOME MORE POPULAR AROUND THE WORLD?! If you don’t know what they are, they’re like a thicker tortilla, but they’re made out of potato, or so I’ve been told.

Interesting story about Norway as well: the jacket that I’m wearing in this video I got from Norway. I love it! It’s from Scotch and Soda, which is my favourite clothing company (seriously, like half of my clothing is from there), and whenever I go to Europe I find an outlet and shop there, because they’re not available in Korea and Japan yet. Anyhow, I found this jacket, and it seemed cool, but then I felt in the top left pocket and felt something lumpy. I patted around in there and then pulled out the lump: it was the dangling multicolour pompoms. POMPOMS? IN A JACKET?! SOLD! When I brought it to the cash, and I was paying for it, I asked why the hidden pompoms. If I had seen them out from the get go I wouldn’t have hesitated to buy it. They told me, though, that they keep the pompoms hidden, because men in Norway don’t like flashy clothing like that. The jacket is their worst selling item in the shop. Supposedly, in Norway, men prefer very plain looking clothing. I was shocked. I’d imagine this jacket would be their top seller, it’s so damned funky! Anyhow, I love it, and I learned something new about Norway in the process.

So that’s it for this week’s episode. Sorry we were traveling for so long and had to miss out last week’s episode. We don’t have any intercontinental travel planned for a while, so we should be good for making videos in and around Japan. Already filmed a FAPFAP for this week. Off to film some more vids today. Take care everyone!

  1. About the eventful thing… Now I can relate a little more: couple days ago I had an encounter with one high tech japanese toilet, hahahah I went to a ramen shop and for my surprise it was there in the restroom. It’s not common where I live.

I finished my ramen and came back to pressed all the buttons… nothing happened. I did not film (I forgot), but so many snapchats hahahah But still, was magical and amazing!

  2. I always wondered: when you’re filming (in locations like bars, restaurants etc.) you just go and do it or do you ask beforehand for permission? I know once you had bad exprience at the Coffee Prince Coffee Shop, but are people sensitive about cameras in general? Or they just don’t mind them?

And the answer to the weekly challenge is: Martina has a bright green bike (with pink sakura stickers on it :P), and Simon has a black one.

  5. DAN HAS A FACE!!!!

Okay..now I can comment in order: Martina I LOVE the purple in your hair. It reminds me of cotton candy or ice cream or fairies or anything super awesome and it looks really great!

I love how by the 3rd time Dan is just immune to the poppers. Kekeke. I’d love to have this kind of birthday attention all day.

Mosquitos – I swear I always get bitten by a buttload of mosquitos whenever I travel anywhere not close to my home. I think they can tell I’m not native and just want to feast on me.

Ketchup chips – I don’t think you can buy them in America but that doesn’t stop everyone I grew up with from taking a bag of plain chips, crushing them into crumbs and mixing them with ketchup. I haven’t done it in a while but it was life. That and cheetos or doritos nachos….come on son that was life.

  10. We are EPIK teachers in Korea, but we will be in Tokyo over summer vacation. What is the name of the meal you had in the jet lag section? I need that in my life. Thanks for all the food recommendations!

  11. I had a really bad last night – but today when I woke up I said to myself: I have fresh bread, I will make a jummy breakfast and watch eat your sushi, this is going to be great! So when you talked about how to change the perspective of everyday events, I felt proud and happy. Not only because I really try to be like that myself, but because I know you are one of the reasons I try so hard.
I was so heartbroken not being able to see you in Norway!! I had to work the whole weekend :( I’m glad you had a good time, sorry about the mosquitos, they seem to like me too, and none of my friends. It must be my american blood that’s tempting them. You should try lompe with brown cheese, it’s surprisingly jummy.

  12. Okay but for psoriasis the paleo diet may also help, here’s a few sources:
    https://www.psoriasis.org/treating-psoriasis/complementary-and-alternative/diet-and-nutrition/gluten-free-diet
    https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/psoriasis-and-gluten-sensitivity/

and as I wrote once before it could also be helpful for your other condition (Martina)

    Have fun in Japan :)

  14. I think it’s totally cool of you guys to get so excited about celebrating Dan’s birthday and making a big fuss. I know that there are people out there that don’t like that kind of thing, but to me birthdays are a BIG DEAL! When I was a kid we didn’t have a lot of money, and since my brother and I’s birthdays are so close together, my Mom would often tell us that only one of us would get a birthday that year. So as an adult I tend to go a little overboard on my birthday just cause I can :) My brother also has a super bad case of psoriasis. His arms and legs are almost completely white from it. They put him on some medication to help it but it badly affected his immune system and made him sick so he just decided to live with the sores instead. I know it makes him embarrassed though, especially when people stare. Luckily my psoriasis is mild and stays mainly on my scalp where my hair hides it. On another note…the crab salad that they sell at the store by me is very mayonnaise-ie and has things like celery and chunks of cheddar cheese in it. I won’t bother saying what color your bikes are since several people have already given some nice detailed descriptions, but I would like to say that I love your positive outlook on life, your bright and cheerful videos that brighten my day, and I hope that you really DO get to destroy that flaxton street sign one day!

  15. I know the answer to this week’s question Martina has a light green bike with a bunch of cute stickers on it and Simon has a greyish black bike and I know that from the “Sakura Food In Japan” video that you guys did 4 months ago and I remember that you guys talked about bikes and keeping them save in Japan and this person asked you if japan is like Canada where if you don’t tie your bike someone will steal it and you guys said that in a eat your sushi episode (it really took me a long time to figure this one out I really really tried this time) love you guys

  19. Martina’s bike is green she added stickers on to it and it has a basket on the front which she bought a brown dog bed to put inside it for spudgy to ride in the basket comfortable. Simon’s bike looks blackish gray and has a basket too. Love watching your guy’s show and Martina your attitude towards life is inspiring thank you.
