Pub Crawl in Cologne, Germany

So, we have a few pictures from our pub crawl, but not as many as our other post on our general shenanigans in Germany. Just a few, though!

We ate at the first place we went to, which is where we took these food shots. We figured that, if we’d be drinking a lot, we should fill up our tummies first so we don’t get sloshed. Soo Zee disagrees with this strategy, though, and things that eating while you drink keeps you drunk longer. I’m pretty sure we had this discussion on another blog post, didn’t we? Anyhow, that first place we ate as WAS SO GOOD! The mashed potatoes were freakishly delicious. We almost yelled from being so happy at eating them. Our waiter, though, didn’t see eye to eye with us. We has a giant bald man, with a huge gut and a very gruff voice. He looks like he’s seen some things before, like he’s killed a few people by strangling them with one hand. When we told him that we thought the mashed potatoes were great, he didn’t say thank you, or even agree with us. He just said “no,” and walked away. It’s not that he didn’t understand us. He was fluent in English. He just…said no. Hmm.

Also, at our second bar, we saw a gigantic freaking dog. Probably one of the biggest dogs I’ve ever seen in my life. We were walking upstairs to the second floor of the bar, and the dog was walking down the stairs. I immediately became stupid giddy like I do whenever I see dogs. I think this picture is fairly accurate. I asked the owner if I could pet it and they agreed, and I marvelled at the size of this beast, and pet it as it was wiggly and happy for the attention. I asked the owner about the breed, and they said it was some kind of German Puma hunter. PUMA HUNTER?! Yes, this dog kills pumas. The owner was a bit sad, though, when he said that – unfortunately – there aren’t many pumas in Germany anymore. I said “do you know why?” inquisitively, and he didn’t know. I said “because your dog killed them all.” THAT THING WAS HUGE! But it wasn’t a killer. It was a sweetheart.
You can see it in the bloopers at the bottom of the post :D

More importantly, I really, really liked dog culture in Germany. Dogs were everywhere. Every coffee shop or restaurant I was in had at least a dog or two sitting politely with their owner. Dogs were taken everywhere, even giant puma killing dogs to tiny German pubs. And all of the dogs are well behaved. I didn’t see any gotdamn yappy dogs or anxious dogs or any annoying dogs at all. Korea has lots of annoying dogs. I think it’s because people barely walk their dogs here. Not all people, mind you, but many. Dogs are often left at home all day, and they don’t have a good outlet for their energy, nor do they have training from owners that take them places. Germany, man: great place for dogs. They’re doing it right.

Anyhow, I hope you liked the video. We had a great time filming it, and it was definitely one of our best memories from Germany, and from the Ooh Euro Nasty Tour altogether. We have some extra scenes as well, if you’d like more!

Lastly, we’ve got a few German videos to publish, including one later tonight, and a special WTF tomorrow. WOOT!

  1. Looking at the blog post I am imagining Soo Zee pounding down beers as they are eating their food :D

  2. You should’ve gone to the “Bieresel” (beer donkey), the most famous old “pub” in Cologne :)
Though it might still be closed, they’re renovating the kitchen, I’m not sure. But it’s in a different area.
They have great food too, and clams, which is a traditional thing in Cologne as we used to have one of the most important ports in Europe in the middle ages.

    Maybe next time :D

  4. The behavior of the waiter you experienced is kind of the signature of a cologne brewery waiter called “Köbes”, someone should have told you that alongside with the thing that you always get a new beer if you dont put the coaster on top of the glass, the waiters are kind of rude and arent suppose to chat with you and are short on words ;), it wasn’t you its lets say the tradition. historically the “köbes” was someone who brew the beer and didnt serve it.

  5. DD

It is not really about the Koln but … your film rate is raising up from PG-13 to R after Soju challenge. These are all prohibited in Korean on-air broadcast: alcohol, steal, drunk report, and drinking scene!

    It thrills me. :)

  6. I’ve been watching your videos since 2009 and I must say, this video takes the cake for best editing. You’ve improved so much in your videos. The types of shots you take, the things you get in your shots, the way you piece them together in post-production, and the music you add to it. It all forms an extremely cohesive and enjoyable viewing experience. Some seriously high quality artsy videos coming from you guys these days and I love it! Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to see how much you guys continue to improve. ^_^

  7. And now I understand why all my friends from other European countries say beer is so expensive in Finland! It’s like 3,50 euros for a glass here and apparently it sucks. It’s expensive in Hong Kong though too, so I didn’t realise it could be so inexpensive (comparatively~)

  8. I think the dog owner was messing with you (or he was scammed, lol). That dog is a dogo argentino. I have never heard of a puma hunter…

  9. Where was SooZee?

  10. Poor Leigh…seems like she and SooZee hardly ever get food in FAPFAPs. ㅠㅠ

  11. Okay, that’s kind of hilarious that the waiter of the restaurant you were eating in disagreed with you that the food was good. Ha ha ha! What?

  12. unfortunately you tasted the worst german beer. I hate kölsch!!! I’m german and normally I love beer. Most of all the german beer and ok also the polish beer ;)

  13. ooooh I miss Apfelstrudel!! I hate beer though. I’m an unnatural German, I know.

  14. Hehe, maybe it is not the best to start with Kölsch if you want to try german beer. The glasses are to small and Kölsch tastes weird (in my opinion and I grew up in Germany ;)) Did you guys visit the Dom (cathedral) in Cologne?
Anyways it was fun to watch this video :D

  15. It looks like you guys had a lot of fun~. I wish I could do things like this, but unfortunately I don’t actually care for most beer. :c I generally like fruity beers that are never at bars, thus I end up with a hard cider instead–still yummy, but I feel less hardcore, lol.

    • It’s ok. I wasn’t the biggest fan of German beers, either. Well, not the Kolsch at least. We went to another bar in Germany that didn’t follow the German Purity laws and it was GLORIOUS!

  16. (6:19) WAFAP: Wonderful Adventure For Awesome People! – a new segment in which EYK gets rekt.

  17. Simon called it the “Wonderful Adventure For Awesome People” at the end. The WAFAP? New hybrid segment (of awesome hilarity)? :D

  18. Do you all have any German Smoke Beer? It’s super delicious stuff!

It’s like liquid Bacon! Absolutely brilliant stuff.

    • Wait! We just talked about the smokey beer in our second Germany video. Yay!

    • We had one beer at a different pub that tasted really, really smokey. I couldn’t take more than one sip of it. It was like sausage.

      • Sounds about right!

The stuff is so meaty, my friends and I usually drink a glass and then cook Chili or soup with the rest of it. Some of the best drunken Chili we’ve ever made was with that stuff. :D

Drinking Kolsch is Cologne is totally classic. Apparently, only Kolsch that is brewed in Cologne is actually Kolsch. Regionally guarded kind of stuff. So you did a once in a life-time kind of food adventure.

I’m guessing you both are generally like witbiers? Most of my favorite beers are either German Hefeweizens or Belgian Tripels…

So many delicious beers to try, so little time! I can probably talk about beer forever. Yay for Boston yuppie foodie culture!
