Eat Your Sushi: Six Months in Japan!

Hello everyone!

It has now been SIX MONTHS for us in Japan. It really doesn’t feel like it. Two months max, I’d say. TWO MONTHS MAX! We’d have been more festive and celebratory, but we got wretched food poisoning. SO BAD. We were in the hospital on Saturday. That bad. We’re still ill as we’re writing this now, but we’re better than yesterday at least. We’ll tell you about it for this week’s Eatyoursushi because we otherwise have NO STORIES. All we did was sleep and poop from Thursday onwards.

Anyhow, Sunday was the first day I had enough strength to leave the house and walk Spudgy after he destroyed that corner of our rug, and I met one of our favourite neighbours. Not the grandma we love so dearly, but Atom the dog’s owner. We talked for a bit, and he said he wants to go to Iseya with us, and I said we love that place and would love to go with him. I felt bad in telling him that we can’t go this week, because we can barely eat anything at all because of our food poisoning, so he said we can get together early August. YAY! Dinner with one of our neighbours! That’s amazing! Should we ask our grandma neighbour for a dinner one night as well? We’re so nervous! What if she says no? What if she’s going with the quarterback to prom instead of us ahhhh!!!

It’s Monday morning, Japan time now, and we just woke up and I think we’re doing ok. Still wobbly, but we’ll be ready this week for filming Eatyoursushi, for sure!

  1. Speaking Korean:
I do the same thing! Every now and then, I’ll hear some people speaking Korean around me and I really want to just lean in and start talking to them in my little broken Korean. But I’m shy and don’t want to be rude so I don’t. Instead I awkwardly eavesdrop and hope for an opening.
Once, I was at Sam’s club in the food line and a father and son were behind me speaking Korean. I was listening to how he was saying we’re going to eat and how the son was practicing reading English and was thinking ah so cute. Well the line was really long and moving really slow, so I tried to casually show my frustration with a classic “aigoo” or “aish Jeongmal?!” but I don’t think I was loud enough. Then, after I paid for my food, I had gotten so much I had to leave the counter to put some of it down then come back for more. So I left my wallet there while I was waiting (my seat was like 10 steps away and I could see the counter the whole time). The father thought I left it by accident so when I came back he handed it to me and I said “ahh…wait please” in korean. I don’t even think he realized it. T_T

Ah! and there was another time a LONG time ago I was eating something while waiting for the bus and this little ahjumma was sitting next to me. Now I hadn’t said a word to her and she just looks over and said “delicious?” in Korean. I don’t think she expected me to understand her so when I answered “ye, neomu mosiseoyo (butchered spelling!)” she nodded then went wide eyed “oh you speak korean?!” At the time though I didn’t know how to say ‘only a little’ so I just made the little bit gesture but I loved her reaction. It does feel great to be able to practice such an uncommon language.

    Weekly challenge:
Holy monkeys I just guessed skateboard based on what you guys were saying (reminded me of the Korean habit of shortening or combining words like Selca or NamChin). Didn’t think I was right though! Now if only I could read it! Lol

    Mail Time:
Alex from Germany – that picture of Simon snuggling Meemers is AMAZING! You have all the skill!

Simon has the most natural backwards walk that for a second I was thinking (man how did they get all those people to agree to walk backwards?!

I always look forward to these vlogs of your time in Japan. It’s really great to see you guys enjoying all the little cultural things and to have that feeling of being a bit lost and confused in a country again. I also get to live through you guys so double win! It rally sucks about your food poisoning. I can’t imagine how bad you must have felt since you needed IV’s for hydration. I had a mild case once and it was terrible…my kidneys hurt?!

    I hope you’re feeling better.

    Capsule Toy question:
My favorite episode EYS was episode 7 Bad Lip Reading just because I love watching you guys be in Love. Plus that episode made me feel a lot of feels. I’ve mentioned this a few times already – but at the time you guys reunited, I was actually leaving my LDR BF that morning. Even though Simon was crying for a different reason (reunion rather than departure) I felt all the feels and cried too and it really felt like I was watching/listening to friends and real life people (not internet gods whom I totally don’t worship with a secret gum altar >.> )

  2. Food poisoning!! OH NO. It really is the worst, but at least you both are doing better! Hmm…favorite EYS episode so far, that’s a tough one. I really enjoy all of them, especially the ones featuring food. I was born in Japan, so it gives me a nostalgic feeling when I see foods I remember eating as a child. But, I’m going to have to go with Episode 17: Marmite Challenge as my favorite. It was just so funny to watch the marmite challenge, and the hope that maybe you got the chocolate snack, but the horror at realizing it’s marmite. So funny!

  3. Hi Simon and Martina, have you had Bikkle yet?! It’s my favorite.

  4. Hmmm that’s a hard question…. I loved Spudgy’s walk, but I also liked episode 16…. Where you guys played the ‘say the same thing’ game. I thought it was adorable. ☺️☺️

  5. My favourite EYS episode would be “Spudgy first walk in Japan”. I also have a Pekingese dog which my family rescued when I was in 6th grade, a she. I’m currently studying abroad in Australia so I have to leave her to my grandparents. She is also very old, about 12 years old. She sleep with her tummy up and her legs are weak so she walk very funny. Her eyes are quite bad in dark environment where she barely see anything. That’s why I love to play hide and seek with her. All I have to do is sit in a dark place and call her name, she would running around the house looking for me. Haha excuse me for telling a long story. It’s just that every time I saw Spudgy in the video reminds me of her. I watch all the video that feature your fuzzy animal all the time, so much that I even remember all the dialogue in the video. Thank you for brighten up my week!!!

  6. I already posted this on youtube, but I wanted to make sure you saw it, hence the double post: You are looking for Hiyayakko Tsuyu, which translates to cold tofu soy sauce! That first kanji: 冷 means cold. Just look for that kanji (冷), followed by やっこ つゆ (yakko tsuyu). Or ask one of the people who work at the supermarket Hiyayakko Tsuyu wa doko desuka? arigatou gozaimasu!! (Where is the hiyayakko soy sauce, thank you very much) ^-^ Good luck Martina!! May the hunt continue! Maybe you can introduce the corner of shame in your fridge so your viewers can help you figure out how to use it?

  7. soooo I am planning on applying to teach in Japan starting in the next year, I have no experience going abroad and I am going out on a limb. What’s it like starting over in a new country? What’s it like not knowing the language? Is it a doable transiion for someone to do it alone?

  8. I loved episode 14, i felt simons pain about fall out 4! Being a slobby pc gamer is the best when you can be! I also loves the arcade machine it looked totally awesome and you both looked like cool transformers

  9. I’ve heard that google translate works really well for translating kanji. I think SharlainJapan has a video about it.

  10. My favorite episode of eat your sushi is episode 7 because I get to see your apartment before it’s covered with stuff, the ice pack being cold XD pretty cool, I found that ice pack you use for your joint online but ended up getting a different version but it really does help with my limes disease and bad joint so it was pretty cool learning about medical ice packs. I only had the plastic coolant ones. I also like that episode because you guys remind me of a vacation I took to japan. I lived there for 2 months in Sano. It was so fun but I had not learned any Japanese. So I was the person at the grocery store finding pictures on things or guessing. There we’re some strange snacks…I wouldn’t mind having some more. Love you guys!

  11. My favorite so far has been the Sailor Moon Cafe. I really wish I could go there myself, and I have been craving a burger with a big pink bun ever since I watched it. Also, Martina’s outfit was THE BEST. I am going to go ahead and second the comment that I will need a video tutorial of your recipe for those cucumbers! <3

  12. My favourite episode of EYS so far, was the first one! Don’t get me wrong, the others are great and even this one is super good IMHO (it seems like you tradeoff between well-scripted with many exerpt videos and winging it-with only a couple of exerpt videos, both ends of the spectrum are at a great ratio), but the first one is my favourite because it was so nice to see you guise sooooooo happy and optimistic and finding the fun in every small thing again when it was obvious that you were beginning to yearn for new adventure during the previous couple of years. That first video was like “FREEDOM! Whehoo! New Stuff!” in every word you spoke and it just sits a tiny bit closer to my heart for that reason.

  13. I would have to say that the Japanese breakfast video was my favorite because it reminded me of my old Japanese boss that took care of me after a bad time in my life. She would make me breakfast like what you guys had and would pack me so many plates of lunches and dinners as well. She always made me the spicy cucumbers that I can never replicate! That video reminded me of a wonderful turning point in my life that I will never forget. That video made me smile and remember all the good times I had with her and how she was my old Japanese grandma I worked with that made sure I was fed and taken care of. :)

  14. If you find a product you like, like your tofu sauce, you might try typing the bar code into google and see what product comes up. you might be able to find a translated word for it. Or you might take a picture of the bar code to the grocery and see if someone can help you. Good luck!

  15. This is a tl;dr question.

When you moved to Korea to teach, you started EYK unintentionally, it grew naturally out of the videos that you were posting for family and friends. The EYK brand grew organically.
Moving to Japan with a existing audience is a completely different story. How has your audience responded to the changes and has your audience changed?

  16. Episode 14 is my favorite. After Simon tortured Martina in the previous episode by feeding her from behind, Martina got her revenge! It was so funny, but I think Simon got off kind of easy. I also like this episode the best because you opened the package I sent. :)

  17. Watching the video where Martina threw the cupcake against the wall had me rolling with laughter. Literally rolling on the couch laughing. That ones my favorite:)

  18. I definitely liked Episode 11 the most , and besides laughing so much at how people assumed Simon was a potential drug addict and his fake British accent , I enjoyed the challenge which made me realize how some Jpop groups had weird names ! If I saw such names on the street , I would think it was a grocery store or a clinic xD ~

  19. I know I’m not a paid member, but can you please take pity on me and give me your cucumber recipe??

  20. My favorite Eat Your Sushi episode was Silent Library-the one where Simon got ALLLLLLL the punishments. I could NOT stop laughing, I actually woke my husband up because I was sitting in bed watching this while he was already sleeping! There were so many cool ones, I’ve really enjoyed learning more about Japan from your videos, so it was hard to choose. I liked the cat cafe one probably second best. I would love to own a cat cafe just so I could pick out dozens of cats to rescue…

  21. When Martina was reading the soup label, she sounded just like a Sim… fantastic

I’m surprised you guys never saw someone on the street in hanbok. I’ve seen a few old ladies riding the subway in quite fancy ones… probably maybe going to or from a wedding… And I think less popular than the hanbok is the more countryside kind of quilted traditional Korean clothing. I see that a lot in the winter and I’d love some for myself, looks so toasty nice.

Favorite Episode: maybe doesn’t count cuz it was shot in Korea, but… “Loooooooser Sa-i-mon, Loooooooooser Sa-i-mon” plays in my head every time Simon loses and it never gets old. Plus, “Oh no.” I cried laughing on the bus, and it was totally worth it. And I have also since played that game with friends, definitely a great ice breaker for when you’re hanging out with new people. So that video was funny AND educational! Yay!

Spam sound + Soozee performance = MAXIMUM LAUGH (:

  23. I think the eat your sushi that I loved the most was #11 the ‘Sailor Moon Fan Club Event’ episode. First off, as a total sailor moon nerd it’s fun for me to get to see other fans of the show (even if it’s just through the internet) I love seeing people geeking out about the same things that I geek out about. I would love to be able to go to those things and seriously I would blow all of my money if I got near half of the merchandise I see you guys looking at. It was also nice to see you guys getting the gifts (tomatoes) from your neighbors and having a nice little community to live in where the people are friendly. I always love the stories about the sad consequences of poor Simon being left on his own :( poor Simon. The Japanese band name challenge had me totally snorting with laughter and best of all ROSE CAME TO VISIT!!! (sniffles) It was really nice to see Rose. I know you guys don’t know me and really I don’t know you, but when she was hurt I worried and prayed for her and any time I can see that she is doing better and happy makes me feel happy inside too. Love you guys!!!

  24. My favorite Eat Your Sushi episode so far is probably episode 13 “Martina’s Mokbang” I was already laughing out loud when you guys were talking about the whispering bus driver, but I completely lost it when the “Mokbang” part came in, not only because of Simon touching all over the food (XD) I don’t know why, but when Martina just kept laughing in the middle of narrating I just laughed so hard. I actually remember falling off of my chair laughing so hard that tears were coming out of my eyes whenever she said “I do love ice cream ’cause I’m so naughty” while laughing (I DIED AT THAT POINT XDD) But to be very honest I love all of the Eat Your Sushi’s so far, every time I watch the newest one I end up laughing and smiling. You guys have seriously helped me through a lot of pain (from Severe Scoliosis) and sad times that I’ve had, and even though I have never met ya’ll, I feel like we are friends haha~ So Thank you guys for being yourselves and making hilarious content that I love :> (sorry this is so long eheh…)

  25. My favorite episode was the one with the weekly challenge where Simon acted as Martina’s hands and fed her. Oh. MY. GOSH. I have seriously never laughed so hard. Simon did great the next episode when Martina got her revenge, but GIRL, in that challenge you OWNED it.

  26. I’m American, but I have a working knowledge of Japanese and am slightly obsessed with their food. So maybe I can help you find the sauce and deal with the corner of shame. :)

So it looks like you are making Hiyayakko! The sauce that you want is called Hiyayakko Tsuyu (冷奴つゆ). On the bottle you had it was written 冷やっこつゆ which is kind of odd? If you look for those first two kanji in the spelling above you should be able to find the sauce you are looking for. If you find someone in the grocery store to help you, you could ask them “Hiyayakko tsuyu wa doko desu ka?” (Where is the hiyayakko tsuyu?)

As for the corner of shame, if you want to take a picture of the stuff in it, I might be able to translate or at least tell you what it is used for. For example that fishy tsuyu you have sounds like Mentsuyu. It’s dipping sauce for cold soba noodles and tempura. it can also be diluted and used as the stock for soups and stews like Nabemono, Udon, and maybe Oden (Not sure and depends on the brand). I have a bottle of it and mostly just make very simple Udon and as dipping sauce for soba.

    • Also i think the brand you are looking for is called Higashimaru Kyonoren Hiyayakko Tsuyu. Good luck!

  27. I loved the EYS where you went to the Sailor Moon cafe!
…but if next door Gram gram eats dinner with you that will be my all time heart meltly ❤

  28. Congrats on making it half a year in Japan!! My favorite Eat Your Sushi Episode is Moving Day. It was the first video EYS I ever saw and Martina sticking on the name plate of your first house, and the both of you being excited and hopeful for the future was so inspiring that I’m now saving up myself. I yearn for that feeling of accomplishment and pride in something even as small as a name plate. So thank you both for being inspiring <3 Snowy.

  29. (First of all, sorry for my english, I mostly write in french normaly) :)

My first and favorite episode was the, How to Make Korean Ramen. Loved it for making my ramen more sassy lol :D And lately, the What’s in the Mystery Cans? episode made me explain to alot of people around me, how i feel about life in general, you explain it so well from 13:30 to 19:38 (references to others of course).
Your a good bunch a people you two, don’t ever change :D

  30. My favourite EYS ep so far is probably last weeks episode. We got to meet Dave, and laughed SO hard at the statistical improbability of Simon losing so epically. Sorry Simon. Karma is doing Martina a solid for all the times she has lost.

Peri peri is a marinade; it’s made from birds-eye chilis and used pretty much for kickass BBQ chicken (cooked on charcoal). (Aside, you guys are from Toronto and you’ve never been to a Portuguese Churrasqueira for BBQ chicken???) Google ‘frango com peri peri’ or ‘peri peri chicken’ for some recipe ideas. :D
