Speaker’s Corner: New Year’s Resolutions

January 4, 2015

It’s 2015 and the future is upon us…where are my flying cars and hover boards!!?? I suppose we don’t appreciate the stuff that we already have such as touch screen devices and the ability to capture the internet from the air and use it to call our families around the world. Probably because we were expecting something cooler like hovercars but I suppose it we had them we’d feel like they were just normal and we’d want something cooler like hippos with lasers on their heads. Haha!

When it comes to New Year’s, Simon and I actually don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions simply because we believe you can change anything at any point during your life. No point of saving it until January but I suppose New Year’s creates a kind of goal point for some people that can give them motivation. Motivation to lose or gain weight according to this video, but the timing really sucks because the cold wintertime is a terrible time to be motivated to exercise. Winter to me screams bear-like survival instincts such as “we need to eat more food to stay warm and create a nice layer of fluff all over your body Martina. You can start by consuming that whole bowl of rice.” Also, rolling out of my warm blanket nest of a soft bed into a freezing cold house doesn’t really scream “let’s put on gym clothing and freeze, yay”. My inner hibernating bear is working against me! Plus, bulky winter clothing doesn’t really say “wow, looking good hot stuff”. For me, I think the spring is a great time to be motivated to get in shape! You can plan your weight loss/gain in accordance to frolicking happily in shorts and a tank top and feeling great! Plus, you gotta burn off all those ice cream cones. Whaaaaat who said that?!

Since 2015 isn’t big on the crazy device front, what are your expectations for the upcoming year? This week’s video featured some seriously adorable people, especially the “I don’t think you need to lose weight” couple. 200 points for you my friend! That’s a good boyfriend right there. Besides a lot of commentary on dieting and getting fit, we also heard about the desire to travel, to learn a new language, to work hard at school, and to save money.

Even though I said Simon and I don’t do New Year’s resolutions, we are thinking of some goals for next year, like buying a mini-oven so we can do more home cooking! We’re also trying to go for more walks and to enjoy the sunlight since we spend way too much time indoors hunkered over a computer. I’m apparently super duper vitamin D deficiant so I gotta get that D! Wait…that doesn’t sound right… I’ve also got a lot of health oriented goals for 2015 because my EDS is just getting worse and worse and after the terrible experience I had with my most recent doctor, I think I’m going to head towards the herbal/holistic approach. Perhaps trying out acupuncture? It helped my a lot after my car accident in high school so maybe it’ll be a more natural approach to dealing with my pain. Time to explore those options and to remind myself not to give up.

Truthfully, after losing the hearing in my right ear this year (a tiny bone dislocated in the middle ear) I felt really low and sad. I can hear you if we’re in a quiet room but I struggle to hear people sitting right beside me if there is any background noise at all. Restaurants and bars are just awful now. But Simon raised my hopes and said I should get the coolest pink and sparkly hearing aid EVAR buuuuuuuuut it turned out because I don’t have traditional hearing loss, it won’t actually help. Poop.

But there is no giving up! I must be the lead character in my own life manga titled: MARTINA THE CUPCAKE, I’ve got to be the character who has other people constantly reminding her “YOU CAN DO IT! DON’T GIVE UP!” and then I’ll look up at them with big sparkly eyes and yell “OKAY! I’LL DO IT!” as I pump my fist in the sky. Despite what I’m going through personally I always remind myself to take strength in other people, that everyone experiences pain in many different ways -not just physically- regardless if they vocalize their struggles or not. We cannot allow ourselves to give up without a fight, a fight that is fit for a comic book or manga. No matter what challenges you’ve had over 2014 I hope you too can become the lead character in your own 2015 manga entitled “YOU CAN DO IT!” and that you can reach whatever goal you’ve laid out for yourself for 2015. Happy New Year indeed, Martina out! Martina jumps on the back of a giant dragon Spudgy and flies off into the impossible pink sunset as cherry blossom petals twirl around the last pages of 2014.

  1. Hi! Warm regards from a US fan here. I only occasionally come here to lurk, but since you mentioned you had a Vit. D deficiency I thought I would get all up in your business and suggest some stuff. Do you have access to supplements like high quality Cod liver oil? I am not sure what brands you have available, or if you are able to easily order from North America, but Cod liver oil is very high in Vitamin D in a form that is readily absorbed by the body. It’s also high in Omega 3’s. A good quality Magnesium supplement like natural calm, and some collagen from grass fed cows might do some good for muscles and joints. Even if not that, they help you sleep and give you glowing skin:) I never make New Year’s resolutions either. There is no time like the present to make positive changes. I wanted to also tell you guys that I love to watch your videos. I had no idea there was any controversy surrounding you guys, because I am not on twitter or anything, but those ppl are crazy. You guys are awesome, and I hope you keep the videos coming, and don’t let those weirdos psych you out. I hope that you (Martina) are able to find a healthcare practitioner who can help you on your path to wellness. Fighting!:)

  2. Ahh guise that post was seriously cute and motivational. I’m usually more on the gloomy side of optimism meter so I guess my resolution for this year is being more optimistic and positive. our new year actually starts in a couple months but the sooner the better.

  3. Seriously, where did all that cuteness come from?! >,< I feel like my heart is going to burst.

  4. I really want to go in the booth with a kpop mask on and act all secretively like I’m really that person and don’t want to be spotted by the ever present paparazzi… Yeah, I’m kinda weird like that XD

  5. Martina the Cupcake, OMG I love it, just gave me an idea for cupcakes, yellow cake with pink lemonade swirl. with a yellow and pink lemonade swirled frosting!

  6. Agreed! Anytime is a good time to make decisons and turn your life around.
2014 has been an exhausting year for me. I lived in 3 countries and moved ten times. I started new things like scuba diving and hip hop, and I finally got my driving license (really hard in my country). I travelled loads and met awesome people. I also had a severe episode of depression and anxiety, but I had many amazing experiences. The year ended well.
In 2015, I plan on getting my degree and get a job! Big big year coming up! I also want to be able to travel back to Asia, visit my friend in Hong Kong, go back to the place where I lived in Japan and maybe go to Korea. If I get a job that is. Maybe it will be for 2016.
I will also take up dancing, redecorate my appartment, find a teaching part time job and spend my free time wolunteering. Focus on exercising and creating, do loads of yoga, photography and writing. Improve in Japanese and Korean. And I seriously need to get back into the dating pool.
In one year, my life will have changed completely. I look forward to see how it will all work out.

  7. Martina, I really hope you read this.
Have you been to an good audiologist? Because if its something wrong with the ossicles (tiny bones in the middle ear) you have a “perfect” hearing loss for a hearing aid. It’s a mechanical/conductive hearingloss, which means that the cochlea is still ok (unless there is something more wrong, but from what you said its only the ossicles) and a hearing aid will really help you! Seeing as the cochlea (the spiral, shell-looking thing in the ear) is totally ok, you only need a higher volume to actually hear. Of course you wont hear as you did before, but it will really help you.

I really advice you to go to another audiologist (me, perhaps when i’m graduated? Just kidding!) and try it, it will take some time to get used to though. I’m in my fourth semester of becoming an audiologist in Norway, and right now we are learning a lot about who is a good candidate for a hearing loss. And I would strongly advice you to try it!

  8. No resolutions for me either. Same reasoning.

I love Speaker’s Corner videos. They all just put a smile on my face. They are short and simple videos that are pretty cheerful. So when you’re feeling down, Martina, just watch your Speaker’s Corner vids ;D I hope they make you smile too :)

I did acupuncture when I was pregnant with my second child. Definitely helped me. It’s a bit frightening at first but it’s a step in a proactive direction.

    Fighting!

  9. I don’t like new years resolutions either! I always fail at them so this past year I made a new method of goal making that actually worked. Every month I would make 2-3 goals. I tried to keep each different and specific, focusing on the areas of fitness, mental health, relationships, and giving back. Thats how in 2014 I donated blood twice, drank a gallon of water a day, learned 14 new recipes, helped out at a cat shelter, spent a lot of quality time with family, got back into weekly yoga/fitness classes, and read 5 books amongst other goal victories. Hope the whole crew had a good holiday season!

  10. Thank you for the reminder about the importance of being positive as I am dealing with my mother being in the hospital after having surgery on a brain aneurysm and experiencing some of the worst pain of her life.

  11. I’m all late to the party, but I didn’t realize there was such a neat essay attached to this video :-) Martina – thank you for sharing some of your journey with us. Hang in – life can be so scary sometimes (and medication screw-ups can be TERRIFYING). I hope you find the solutions that are right for you – and who knows where technology may be in a few years? There may be some answers around the corner for you (my SO is rocking color-coordinated, Bluetooth-enabled assistive technology that wasn’t around when they were first diagnosed).

And thank you, in the middle of all of it, for sharing your amazing attitude with everyone. No one has to be positive all the time, but you guys seem to consider ‘spreading the love’ to be part of your jobs. In the words of the kid on YouTube who gave the speech after learning to ride his bike: “You can do it… Be happy of yourself… Rock & Roll!!!”

  12. Aw Martina, I hope you can get back on track, which I know you will because you’re such a strong amazing person. I know you can do it <3 you are also very fortunate to have a fantastic support system in Simon. I find cuddling puppies and kitties helps too ^.^ though I have more experience with puppies =). Stay strong and don't pay attention to all of that negativity, follow your own wishes not other people's misguided opinions. Love and best wishes from Australia <3

  13. Doctor says I gotta get that D too.

  14. I’ve had my share of sucky doctors – so if someone now in the health care system is not treating me right or making me feel unimportant I GET RID OF THEM (I accidentally got this in caps lock, and it made me lol, now I seem like a crazy killer, hahahaa!). I’m so sorry your health is getting worse Martina, I feel really sorry for you. You have one of the greatest personalities and positive mindset I have ever met, if there is one person who will return glorious and even more awesome it must be you. I’m happy you have the great bearded dothraki husband to support you as well. Martina, fighting!

  15. awww, martina. hopefully everything will go back to normal. if your bone gets dislocated even without noise, maybe it will be fixed without you noticing it. just believe that the universe will do something for u. stay strong! fighting

  16. I actually found this “random new year resolution” generator on facebook, so my 2015 resolutions are to help my friends diets by eating all their snacks and to embrace the inner crazy catlady. Then again, I have been embracing my inner cat lady since May 1991.
I’m am sincerely gratefull to my parents for giving the baby-me a cat to play with, and teach me how to live with animals. I mean, if you want your kid to grow up as a polite and carefull person, just give them a prickly three-color lady cat. The cat will teach the kid how and when you are allowed to pet them. ^^’ if you do something wrong, these cats will let you know immediately. I still bear the scars from when I was a kid and tried to tummy touch my cat.

Anyway, that was my crazy catlady story,

Martina: I hope you can get your ear fixed. I just wonder, is it fixable at all? If that tiny bone is dislocated, can the not relocate it?

    • Meemers will heal your tummy touching scars, he totally deals with tummy touching, up to 5 rubs before having a breakdown! Hahahah! Also, apparently I can have surgery on my ear but because of my EDS it can just dislocate again with any sudden loud noise so there really isn’t any point. As long as my other ear doesn’t dislocate I’ll be okay! :)

      • Ugh, EDS sucks!
And I guess, that if you fixate the bone, you still won’t be able to hear properly right?
Just from proffesional curiosity, which of the three ossicles is dislocated? (assuming that: small bone is dislocated + no hearing => probably ossicles are reason)

        Don’t kill me if I’m wrong ^^’

  17. I totally get what you mean Martina. My JHS has been getting worse, but I tried acupuncture and even though it was slightly scary, it totally helped! Since I have back problems as well, I found that trigger point injections really help, so this year I’ll just try to get healthier.

YAS YOU CAN DO IT MARTINA FIGHTINGGGG :D We’re all here to support you, and let’s hope 2015 is a safe and happy year for all of us!!

  18. Love and hugs, Martina (and Simon, and thr est of the EYK crew too!). I’ve had a lot of physical & mental health problems last year, and over Christmas my mental health took a biiiig backslide, but I’m working towards making it better. Reading posts like yours reminds me that if other people can have problems and maintain a positive attitude, I can too! Especially with what’s happening, I move to create a big consensual cuddle pile of love, support and positivity. Good luck <3

  19. Martina…I’m so sorry about what u have been going thru in 2014…m sure losing ur hearing must have sucked and sucky doctor made everything worse! Feel better and know that the best things you can do is to stay positive. Its amazing how having a positive spin on things can help with illnesses.
the doc in me just wants to tell you that while you want to try being more holistic/herbal approach, be careful of what you do/use. They can be just as harmful as western medicine. Always read up on what you are using or doing first. And dont let sucky doctor stop you from seeking out and finding a good doctor to help you as well.
Good luck in 2015 and I hope the both of you get the rest and energy you need in ur Jan break!

    • As another doctor who only wants the best for Martina I completely agree with this 100%. Please just stay informed and be alert to all kinds of treatments, alternative, holistic, herbal, eastern or western – all things have their risks and benefits.

  20. Hopefully 2015 will be a better year for you, kpop and everyone else who has been struggling 2014… It wasn’t the best year of my life but neither the worst though. I should enjoy this moment I have and be happy that I have everything allright – not health issues or anything. I don’t have New Year’s resolution but I must work on my grades ’cause girl if I don’t, I’m not going to get into the High School I want. *sigh* My worries are so unneccessery compared to yours. XD

Anyways, try to relax and rest as much as you can~ Have a great year. ^^

  21. I call mine New Years guidelines! Their basically random thoughts I’ve had through the year but I actually tell them to people in jan even though I’ve already been doing them mwahaha!

My mum lost the hearing in her right ear a few years ago, she can have an operation to fix it (or could then) but she chose not too because it made it easier to block out my dads snoring at night! So there are some positives I guess! :)

Feel better guys and happy new year! I’m looking forward to your new videos In Feb!

  22. I wish the EYK crew and all the Nasties the very best in the upcoming year!

I think like the majority of people around the world, I have struggled with different obstacles in my life and your videos have made a huge impact on me. They have gotten me through some hard times. So as a selfish desire, I hope you guys keep making videos and don’t ever get discouraged by comments that are unkind, untrue, or uncalled for. We know how truly lovely and hard working you guys are. I, for one, am extremely grateful to be able to watch your videos and experience your enthusiasm for life!

SO YOU CAN DO IT! DON’T GIVE UP, MARTINA!

  23. I really needed both this video and the blog post today. I had a tough night and felt terribly alone. But who could possibly be along with this great Nasty community?? Thank you for being such inspirations. Lets keep going, together!

  24. I know a way that you can get your hearing back, but it will only be necessarily if it’s permanent. It is called Coclhear Implant (CI) – look it up! It will remove your hearing, and make a new “fake” hearing, it’s kinda difficult for me to explain, but i have it myself, and i love it! At least, google it! :)

  25. Hi guys! This is gonna be short due to my own health predicaments, but I read your twitter feed lately and it made me feel rather frustrated at some people’s behavior.

So what I wanted to say was…. I LOVE YOU GUYS! I know what it is like to struggle with chronic pain, and even though the issue might not be serious in itself, it can be really draining physically and mentally. So I really hope you will get better very soon and wish you and the EYK crew all the best for 2015!

Also, I do think that alternative medicines might help you feel better. So fighting!
    Love from France <3

    • Thanks Jessica! Yeah I’d stay off our twitter feed…it’s not uplifting to say the least. :P By just closing twitter and walking away we just go on our day as normal eating, walking Spudgy, petting the chubby Meemers, and focusing on creative ideas to make an awesome video! And while we’re living our lives as normal laughing and having fun those angry angry twitter people are sitting somewhere alone steeped in negative thoughts and being obsessed with stalking us. I just wish they could do something positive with all that energy. Volunteer at a Youth Group! Volunteer at an animal shelter! Be a Big Brother or Big Sister! Tutor someone!

      • You are right, I think that in the end people focusing on doing positive things are much much happier than those spending time and energy hating on everything! And the community on your website is quite friendly and heartwarming too^^
I guess if I had a New Year resolution it would be this one: spending more time enjoying every little things that make life nicer, like drinking a delicious tea, or staying warm and comfy in my quilt on a cold day. And of course cuddling with pets is the greatest! :D

  26. I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. Health problems suck. Health problems in the middle of winter suck both physically and emotionally. Not to mention kpop brats are testing your patience online, which is infinitely more draining when you’re dealing with something real and some child is being vicious over their trivial interests. (just remind yourself that they’re teenagers and that, as the great teen film auteur John Hughes said, no age group takes themselves more seriously than teenagers. Generations of exasperated parents would agree.) Thankfully you have a lot of real people to lean on who care for you and will be there for you when you need them. Internet people can be nice, but physically present people are best :-)
On another note, have you considered taking a trip back to Canada to see your old doctor there?

    • Thanks for the great comment! John Hughes…great quote. I think next time we’re in Canada I’m planning on visiting an ear specialist, who knows maybe they have seen something like this before? Gotta plan a super boring trip! Hahahahah!

  27. I’m in the same boat as you, I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but that may just because I always have the same resolutions…which means I’m probably not working hard enough at them lol.

When you say “You can do it Martina,” all I could think was Aja aja Martina, fighting! Man…all those Kpop and Kdramas have started rubbing off on me (in a good way :D ) Here’s to a fantastic 2015 EYK!

  28. Martina & Simon ya’ll are an inspiration to all Nasties out here. I’ve been watching your content for years and honestly this community you’ve brought together is filled with such amazing and beautiful people. Thank you for what you do, for sharing your stories, and bringing so much inspiration, laughter, and happiness (lalalalalallalalalala. happpinuus!) to all of us. <3 Hang in there! Sending good vibes and hugs to the entire EYK crew and Nasty community :)

  29. After all the joy and laughter you guys have given me over the years. Don’t take any of the negative comments to heart. The only thing that it shows is tat They haven’t takin the time to get to know you though your videos. Cause if they had there is no way they. They could think of making Those comments if they really did. I secretly can picture Martina reading the comments and breaking in to the miss A’s good girl bad girl song and dance. Any how keep up the good work and fighting!

  30. So I’ve been a silent Nasty for years – I’ve maybe said hi on Twitter once or twice and I’m on your studio contributors wall of names but other than that I’ve been very lazy – sorry! After I read this post though I created an account asap so I could tell you how much I admire you Martina.

This post made me well-up. You are a superhero (you both are!) and give all of us strength/inspiration by being yourself and that self being the most amazing person. Thank you for everything you create and share with us. EYK is wonderful.

  31. I can’t say enough about how important Vitamin D is these days. You’d be amazed how many people are deficient in it because very few people go outside and soak up the sun like they used to. My mom has a masters degree in holistic nutrition and I’ve learned so much from her about natural remedies for every ailment you can imagine. I’ve cured multiple things just by changing what I eat including depression, perfectionism/OCD, and I’ve stopped having migraines completely (which used to cripple me). Recently I’ve been taking Vitamin D drops everyday and it has been doing wonders. I even got some more for Christmas this year. The particular one I use is called Super Daily D made by a company named Carlson. It contains 2000 IUs of Vitamin D in one drop and helps make up for my extreme lack of sunlight. I’d highly recommend getting your hands on some or something similar. Perhaps I’ll send you some in a care package along with some other natural remedies. ^_-

  32. Man Martina, though you only gave a peek of your situation, it must be tough on you.
I’m sending you all the best and a hug (a chubby christmas gluttony one that is ^^’) over to you.
I dearly hope that you’ll find a way to get treatment for your ear.

And yeah, you said yourself that Acupuncture helped you in the past. Giving it a go again sounds like a good idea.
For me (Japanese)Acupuncture became a mental stabilizer next to the pain relieving results to be honest.
The hyper mobility of my joints (never got tested on EDS, so I don’t know) forces down time upon me that stresses me out so bad, and the fear of experiencing pain paralyzes me and my actions more than anything, on a daily base.
However, Acupuncture helps. I’m going continuously for 4 years now. Less or not at all in better times, once a week during not so cool times.

Another thing that I was always hesitant about, but kicked off a year ago is, personal Pilates lessons once a week. I’m too scared of doing group lessons, and my advance is an super turtle-snail slow (no offense to turtles or snails intended). Just last month I had a backslide. However, my teacher is super supportive without forcing progress or making up weird goals. Just for her training I never want to leave Japan to be honest. It’s a worldwide active group (BASI Pilates) and though they don’t have their own studios in S.Korea, they got a partner studio in Seoul. The trainers I met here in Japan are all super serious about their training and not pressuring their clients at all. I’ve never done sports so relaxed.

Lastly, there’s not only people around you who remind you to carry on and give you strength to do so. Going through EYKs comment section sometimes, it’s pretty safe to say that you’re also “the person” who stands in other peoples cheerleading crowds and are giving them strength to DO IT. For most people you’ll probably never see their faces, but you’re good energy for them. My keyboard is getting all slippery here right now, and I know it sounds hyper-cheezy, but I believe that your cheerleading for others through your work comes back to you in little pieces of happiness here and there every now and then.

Lastly the 2nd; Happy 2015. Lots of strength and humor, a little bit more health than usually and a good time overall for you, Simon and the rest of the Eat Your Kimchi crew.

    • Martina! I don’t know what to say but that’s okay because TokyoBerlinConnect does, everything she/he said up there!

I wish I could help somehow, if there is anything at all I can do, I’ll do it! you and Simon are the most amazing people I’ve never met and I will always support you, whatever happens, even if you have to give up EYK for health reasons or hire a body double for the videos, this might be a bit of a one-sided love lol, but I’m here for the good times and the bad times <3

  34. Tears, Martina, I love you! I’ve been going through some things myself, things I can’t talk about with anyone really…super personal, deeply spiritual stuff. Yeah. But We can do it, overcome our challenges! I’m hoping for you that you can feel better health wise this year. Also, I’m sorry for all the hate you both are receiving.

  35. I’m also not one for resolutions. This year though I just have a simple goal of getting my life on track. Last year I felt like I hit a terrible wall and every time I tried to talk about my future or thought about it I ended up in a mess of tears because I didn’t know what to do. I’m determined to get all of that sorted out and start taking steps in the right direction!
Martina you are so inspiring, and I really believe you can do just about anything you set your mind to! You can do it!

  36. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions either, but this year I’m starting it out really hopeful. I’m having the hysterectomy that I needed to get ( unimaginable pain gets to be OVER! ), so I can finally start school and have a life. It’s actually for next Friday ( 9th ), and after I recover I’ll be starting school in April. After 10 years, I can begin having a life. I totally know how it is to have worsening pain, I have fibromyalgia that’s gotten bad over the last few years. 100% with you there, Martina! When I finish school, I hope to see the EYK crew in person ( and maybe offer my skills? -hopes- ). You’ve actually given me some inspiration about living one’s life well despite medical issues that suck major ass. Thank you, truly.

    • Well, I had surgery and didn’t end up with a hysterectomy as planned. The first surgeon ( who did an exploratory laparoscopy ) somehow missed what the second surgeon did find – endometriosis, my right ovary being deformed and had adhesions to the abdominal wall and also my appendix ( the ovary was out of place, we knew that already ), and my appendix was also inflamed because of that. I had that ovary and my appendix removed, and the endometriosis that was found, but… I’m pretty angry. That first surgeon missed all that, possibly putting me at risk for appendicitis, missed a major problem that may have been the cause of my extreme pain, and therefore stopped the hysterectomy during this surgery that I have been 100% prepared for. I even put off school another semester to give enough time to heal from a hysterectomy, and now I’ll end up healing just before the deadline to drop classes. Not that I can take any right now, but it feels like a huge waste. I can’t even do anything legally about it, because I have not a dime to my name. I don’t even know if any of it will help my pain either, because endometriosis is a recurring condition, and removing it can leave scarring that could cause problems later on ( problems getting pregnant, it could cause more pain, etc ). -sigh- So I just went from having a clear direction and future, to thrown back into chaos because someone else screwed up.
