January 4, 2015
It’s 2015 and the future is upon us…where are my flying cars and hover boards!!?? I suppose we don’t appreciate the stuff that we already have such as touch screen devices and the ability to capture the internet from the air and use it to call our families around the world. Probably because we were expecting something cooler like hovercars but I suppose it we had them we’d feel like they were just normal and we’d want something cooler like hippos with lasers on their heads. Haha!
When it comes to New Year’s, Simon and I actually don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions simply because we believe you can change anything at any point during your life. No point of saving it until January but I suppose New Year’s creates a kind of goal point for some people that can give them motivation. Motivation to lose or gain weight according to this video, but the timing really sucks because the cold wintertime is a terrible time to be motivated to exercise. Winter to me screams bear-like survival instincts such as “we need to eat more food to stay warm and create a nice layer of fluff all over your body Martina. You can start by consuming that whole bowl of rice.” Also, rolling out of my warm blanket nest of a soft bed into a freezing cold house doesn’t really scream “let’s put on gym clothing and freeze, yay”. My inner hibernating bear is working against me! Plus, bulky winter clothing doesn’t really say “wow, looking good hot stuff”. For me, I think the spring is a great time to be motivated to get in shape! You can plan your weight loss/gain in accordance to frolicking happily in shorts and a tank top and feeling great! Plus, you gotta burn off all those ice cream cones. Whaaaaat who said that?!
Since 2015 isn’t big on the crazy device front, what are your expectations for the upcoming year? This week’s video featured some seriously adorable people, especially the “I don’t think you need to lose weight” couple. 200 points for you my friend! That’s a good boyfriend right there. Besides a lot of commentary on dieting and getting fit, we also heard about the desire to travel, to learn a new language, to work hard at school, and to save money.
Even though I said Simon and I don’t do New Year’s resolutions, we are thinking of some goals for next year, like buying a mini-oven so we can do more home cooking! We’re also trying to go for more walks and to enjoy the sunlight since we spend way too much time indoors hunkered over a computer. I’m apparently super duper vitamin D deficiant so I gotta get that D! Wait…that doesn’t sound right… I’ve also got a lot of health oriented goals for 2015 because my EDS is just getting worse and worse and after the terrible experience I had with my most recent doctor, I think I’m going to head towards the herbal/holistic approach. Perhaps trying out acupuncture? It helped my a lot after my car accident in high school so maybe it’ll be a more natural approach to dealing with my pain. Time to explore those options and to remind myself not to give up.
Truthfully, after losing the hearing in my right ear this year (a tiny bone dislocated in the middle ear) I felt really low and sad. I can hear you if we’re in a quiet room but I struggle to hear people sitting right beside me if there is any background noise at all. Restaurants and bars are just awful now. But Simon raised my hopes and said I should get the coolest pink and sparkly hearing aid EVAR buuuuuuuuut it turned out because I don’t have traditional hearing loss, it won’t actually help. Poop.
But there is no giving up! I must be the lead character in my own life manga titled: MARTINA THE CUPCAKE, I’ve got to be the character who has other people constantly reminding her “YOU CAN DO IT! DON’T GIVE UP!” and then I’ll look up at them with big sparkly eyes and yell “OKAY! I’LL DO IT!” as I pump my fist in the sky. Despite what I’m going through personally I always remind myself to take strength in other people, that everyone experiences pain in many different ways -not just physically- regardless if they vocalize their struggles or not. We cannot allow ourselves to give up without a fight, a fight that is fit for a comic book or manga. No matter what challenges you’ve had over 2014 I hope you too can become the lead character in your own 2015 manga entitled “YOU CAN DO IT!” and that you can reach whatever goal you’ve laid out for yourself for 2015. Happy New Year indeed, Martina out! Martina jumps on the back of a giant dragon Spudgy and flies off into the impossible pink sunset as cherry blossom petals twirl around the last pages of 2014.
