The Best Soju in Korea

It’s finally ready! This video has taken us a really long time to finish, because it was such a massive undertaking. Allow us to present to you THE BEST SOJU IN KOREA!

This is an idea we’ve been tossing around for a while now. When it comes to Soju, most people only know about the few big ones in Seoul, but there are tons of other Sojus from around the country. Jeju soju is great. Busan soju is great. We tried them when we were in each of those cities, but we never tried Jeollanamdo soju before. Whoa we were missing out!

And so, our winner from the Sojus is Joeun Day Soju (aka, “Good Day” Soju). If you get a chance to try it, go for it! I’ve never seen it in Seoul, but hopefully we’ll find a place that sells it. Soju isn’t the tastiest alcohol to begin with, but this stuff was actually a lot better tasting than the rest. It’s really surprising when you put it up against the Sojus we like. Cho-um Chorum didn’t stand a chance.

I know some of you might say “they all taste like poison” but – really – there are differences in taste. We know some people who are surprised that we can taste differences in Soju. Cho-um Chorum tastes very different than Jinro Soju, for example. Anyhow, if you’ve tried different Sojus, let us know what your favourite flavour is, if you have a discerning palette :D

Special thanks to MyChonny for filming this video with us. He was in Seoul for a few days a while ago, and we got to hang out for a bit. We’re glad he wanted to partake in this video as well. Check out his channel if you haven’t already. He’s a lot funnier than we are :D

You can see more of our silliness in the bloopers, which we could have made a 20 minute video out of if we wanted to, but we kept it shorter in case you got bored. Here: have an extra chuckle at our expense :D

Speaking of Jeollanamdo Soju, we just came back from our giant Korean Road Trip on Friday night, and we’ve got a lot of footage from Jeollanamdo and its great food. Click on the button below so you don’t miss out on any of them. Yay!

  1. Dudes, kudos on this video. This was so well done I was excited about it all the way through! Excellent work on the editing, the acting, and the way you arranged the taste testing. Seriously, it’s a great video and you all should be proud, one of my favorites so far.

I personally don’t drink a lot of soju (I’m a huge lightweight and I have to be careful when drinking or I’ll get sick!), but if we’re out for Korean BBQ (I live in an area with a high Asian population), I tend to mix lemon juice with my soju, half and half. The tartness of the lemon juice just seems to make it easier for me.

    Once again, great video!!

  2. Listen, if this is for science, let’s do it properly. I humbly submitted my serves to peer-review this for you to test your theories, methodology and generalisability, and kept up shot-for-shot with Good Day, Chamisul, Chum Churum and (because that’s all I had at my local store) bokbujajoo (aka raspberry wine).

And yes I can confirm, you are correct in your findings.

Drinking that much soju makes you very, very drunk. Sleepy time now…

    • One of the best EYK videos to date! But the scientist in me really wanted this to be a double blind test. While the methodology is a bit lacking the entertainment was fabulous! I hope you do more videos with mychonny.

  3. I live in Australia and I’m pretty sure my favourite Korean BBQ place sells only Joeun Day Soju :3
Australian Koreans must have good taste?

  4. This video is hilarious. Mychonny is adorable. I love the little Soozee and Leigh talking heads. The Soozee ones were particularly funny.

Just so as I have a reference point to prepare myself if I should ever find soju and decide I want to try it… what would be the closest comparable western not-so-good-tasting alcohol (vodka, tequila, white rum, gin)?

  5. This make-a me so happy. IT’S FOR SCIENCE! Love you guys. You too, Aussie dude. You guys make drunky-time shmexy time.

    • P.s. I’d like to formally request a hangover video. Is it too late? It’s too late, isn’t it.

  6. Chamisul and Cho-um Chorum rule the bars here in L.A. Koreatown. There’s a few that get by… but I don’t see them that often. I’m going to check out the grocery store for a few of these. I know I have tried some others, I recognized them in the challenge. I still buy Cho-um Chorum though. I mean, maybe it is because I know how I will feel the day after. I mean, in my scientific testing.

  7. Hee, this was such a fun vid! Thanks for sacrificing your taste buds for the greater (?) good.

(And is it just me, or are some of those labels *really* hard to read?)

  14. There is an American Soju made by TY KU. They usually make sake but they have a soju that they sell. I haven’t tried it since they use a gelatin in their filters, making it not vegan. And honestly I don’t feel like drinking something THAT bad if it isn’t vegan. (I mean I got options)

I do like how they boast that it has half the calories as vodka. It also has half the alcohol.

  17. Grrreat video guise! I went to New York three weeks ago and I obviously had to go to a korean restaurant (first time!) and ate samgyeopsal and bulgogi. I chose Cho-um Chorum, and really liked it actually! :)

  18. Hey! For you next TL;DR please could do something on hotels/where to stay in Seoul? I’m planning a trip for next year and would really appreciate your advice on good places to stay!

  19. The band on Simon’s head made him look like his hair was floating on top of his head….I think this is the first time I’m seeing them drunk, hilarious

  20. Oh dear, this is one of the best FAPFAPs you’ve ever done! I laughed so hard :)

  21. “Now’s my chance… *evil laugh*” Pffffft favorite line EVER.

My experience of soju when I lived in Korea was that it was made of sadnewss so I avoided ever drinking it by itself. Usually I mixed it with beer to make someck (which just made the beer taste like sadness too). But if there’s a brand that actually tastes decent, I’ll keep a lookout next time I’m over there!

  22. HEY! It’s the bag of cookies I sent! Didn’t think they’d be used in a skit! Guess you ate all the red velvet ones… Did you find the Ginger Snaps Simon?

Soju is awesome. Except the only one I’ve drank is a yogurt mixed one and the Seoul one, Chereum Chereum. Last time my bf and I drank, he lost it when he combined soju and beer. Though to be fair, he had to consume a whole pitcher of beer while I just drank soju…We had to sit at the restaurant until he was able to sober up a little.

Would it be possible for you guys to post a list on the blog of all the Soju names/brands you and Mychonney drank? It would be easy for me to figure out what soju is being sold at the restaurant. Also, it would help whenever I go to Korea..

    • Hahaha! Those cookies we’re awesome! We polished off the ginger ones long before filming this as well :) Thank you for sending them! As for listing all of the Sojus, I wish we had the foresight to have planned that out. We just took pictures for the video, but that’s all. Sorry :(

  23. Dang, that was ALOT of alcohol. I was afraid there would be some impromptu vomiting a la fermented stingray video.

So many questions! Is there an average alcohol content to soju, or does it vary? Do you think your rating of the latter soju’s was effected by your drunkenness? Do you think you’d ever do a taste test comparing rice wines from different countries? What glitter was Martina wearing on her lower lash line, or were those just tears? Do you think you will get some free Joeun Day out of this video?

Your buddy was funny. Forever round 2.

    • Let me try to answer them!

      1) Alcohol content varies, but I mostly see it at around 19 percent
      2) Our ratings definite we’re affected by our drinking, but from the many people we’ve spoken about this video afterwards, many agree that Joeun Day is really good soju, so I hope at least that much is understood :)
      3) We’d love to do more taste test videos. This was fun!
      4) Not sure what hat glitter was :)
      5) I hope Joeun Day gives us free booze!!! Yay free booze!

      • Joeun Day SHOULD give you free merchandise, because drunkenness or not, that was a thorough, thorough test. You even had a control tester who was unfamiliar with soju!

Thanks for answering all my questions :D.

  24. PFFFFFTTTTTTT!!! ^^ I loved this video, I was laughing my bum off.

  25. Of the three types of soju I can find at the lcbo in Toronto I like Charm the best (it’s also the cheapest) and it was the only one of the three to make it to the second round!

  26. Oh, this is hilarious! The editing was so cool:) On a more serious note, how do you guys feel about the Ladies Code accident? It’s so sad. RIP EuB

  27. This video was hilarious! I have to say you guys’ editing is on point! I love all the music, sound effects, and graphics. Really well timed.

Also Simon.. what do you mean you didn’t watch Jurassic Park? That’s a classic!! Shoot her~!!!

  29. LMAO This video is hilarious! Thanks guise for making me smile after a long week of boredom :)

Sannnnnn…..tonio Banderas hahahahaha Me being from Spain, I lost it on that moment lol

    Have a great weekend everyone!!!

  30. I think I´ve never heard anything about spanish stuff. Since I´m spanish, I spazzed out when I catch Antonio Banderas´name.
Martina, why you didn´t know he was spanish? TT.TT
I adore Mychonny and DarrenTP, Mychonny is pretty hilarious.

  31. This vid reminded me of the part in Rooftop Prince where they drank soju and drowned the nasty taste with Whipped Cream. I’m sure it would be hilarious if you guys can try that. :) Also, please do a comparison vid of different ramyuns!!! :)))

  32. Haha, this vid reminds me of the time where I was able to tell brands and “dryness” of champagne apart with 1-2 sips at the tender age of 18… expensive taste is expensive, doh :D! Dang, now I want champagne.

Hilarious video, I love your collaborations! Nothing tops the fermented stingray, though. I love watching you suffer WAY too much. Serves you right for eating all the delicious patbingsu, samgyeopsal and whatnot “for SCIENCE” ;D!

  33. Whoa, that was an amazing video! The whole announcer, Mr. Molester-McGee (hope I spelled that right Chester) introducing the players was incredibly awesome. All the editing for this video was super fun, I felt like I was watching an alcoholic version of street fighter with an infusion of basketball in there. Absolutely loved it!

  34. Is Martina really a New Finlander? I’m Finnish so we’re practically related, YAY! :D

    • Oh wow not sure what to think about that. But I am even more super glad I do not drink. Though it seamed like Martina is an adorable drunk. And it was funny how Simons headband disappeared in front of the blue screen. Once again way to take one for the team guys!

    • Ha. No. Newfoundlander. From Canada :) But I can hear the similarity.

  35. Thanks guys for for starting out my day laughing! Loved the whole thing. 13:18 where Simon comes in and it looks like his head is …well..sliced in half, I laughed…should I have laughed? Anyhooo thank you for starting my weekend off happy!

  36. Haha I love how Simon’s headband makes his head blend in with the bluescreen!

  37. Thank you for making me cry with laughter this morning. Your silliness knows no bounds.

  38. Perfect way to start my Friday! I don’t know what was better, your expressions or Chonny’s inability to figure out what round you were on.

  39. AWWW YEA IT’S HERE. Drinking tons of soju… for science!! :D
Super fun video, and super excited that Good Day soju recently became available in Singapore woohoo!
