Yukata Dance Party

Hi everyone!

As some of you might remember from our Yukata video, Martina had a bit of difficulty in tying up the obi for her Yukata. And by a little bit I mean a WHOOOOLE lot. She didn’t practice at all after we filmed that video. We didn’t really have an occasion to. But this was finally the time! Thank God for YouTube! We couldn’t knock on our neighbour’s door so late at night and ask for help. So YouTube came to the rescue, and guided Martine to a decent looking Obi. Also, for those of you who follow us on Instagram, you might have noticed that I have a Yukata as well. I didn’t do a lot to share it yet, because it was pretty much a last minute Yukata we bought on Amazon. It’s not really my style, and the fabric is SUPER ROUGH. But my skin is super smooth now after all the exfoliation, at least.

We’ve also got a bunch of pictures from the day. We’re really getting into photography lately. I doubt we’ll make a career out of it, but it’s fun to take pictures. I hope you’re ok if we share them here:

Otherwise, it’s a holiday now in Japan. Our neighbourhood is so empty! We were out this weekend and didn’t get slowed down in a giant hoard of people as we usually do in Kichijoji. Our neighbour told us that everyone is going back to their hometown now, and the highways are overrun by traffic jams. Supposedly Monday is a holiday as well. Either way, it’s great here in Kichijoji now. So not busy! Wahoo!

And if you’re interested in Magical Mail Time, it’s now on our Bonus Channel. We got through a lot more of the packages this time around, and we’re almost fully caught up! Wahoo! Hopefully we’ll get through the rest of them soon before the heat melts them all. Check out the video below!

  1. When I lived in Japan, my flatmate’s boyfriend (now husband) came to live with us. We met him at the airport, took the train and then a bus back to our flat. The last bus ride, he left his passport and briefcase on the bus. He was frantic. We had been in Japan awhile, so my friend and I were certain his things would not be stolen. While we waited for the bus to complete its route and return, he was imagining all the grief he would have to go through to replace his ID (and computer.) The bus finally arrived and sure enough, his passport and briefcase were right where he left them.

  2. Hey guys, hope the heat is serving you well. Did you know Japan is on the same horizontal line as Tenseness, United States where I live? So I experience a lot of the weather you do! Some WTFs that you used to beat the heat were: Freeze Foam that shouldn’t go on Simon’s nipples at any time, the watermelon cutter which is used in the water [ Great for EYK bonding time, along with strangers], and the portable foot bath which should be used to soak your feet in hot water but eh improvise. Others that could help would be the Psy Deodorant that didn’t really work well, which given must suck with the few deodorant they had at the time. The Armpit Maxipad to help with “Simon’s sweaty European man sweat”, which actually worked. Also can’t forget the UFO Condom Umbrella, Crappy dog Umbrella [Which sucked], & the Couple Umbrella for summer rain showers. ^w^/) Also don’t forget what you said Koreans believed, eat something hot and it cools your body down, eat something cold and it heats it up. Love you guys, stay the open-minded positive you!
[Had video links that I accidentally deleted ;w]

  3. About that cat bottle thing… I’ve heard the same thing but about dogs. I don’t really know how it works or if it really works but the rumor says that if you put one bottle in front of your house (or wherever you want) dogs won’t mark their territory in that place.
Btw I LOVE your pictures!! Keep sharing them pls! ;)

  4. I love your ending music to your videos I hum it to myself all the time!!! Did you compose this yourselves or is this from a song???

    • Apparently that is stock public domain music that YouTube provides. I’ve heard this same tune in some of Nichola and Hugh’s videos (MyKoreanHusband) as well.

They make me laugh and just be happy haha

  6. First off, Martina looked wonderful in her yukata outfit & I hope that Simon finds a yukata that he really likes. The blue one looked really good even if it wasn’t exactly his style (I’m sure the exfoliating in the heat was *not* awesome). I love seeing the pics here: what is that magical looking colorful mix in front of the nice looking old man? Candy? The pics are great & really make me want to visit Japan even more, so pls do share them. Seeing Meemers was great, too ^_^. The water bottles in front to keep away cats is something I’ve seen done in the Philippines in rural areas. I don’t think that it really works, but they do it anyway lol.
My favorite “beat-the-heat” WTFs, plural!, are the Portable Foot Bath that slooshed cold water everywhere Martina dragged her feet (“shovel-feet” is what Simon said lol), the Etude House Ice Shot Cool Band Freeze Foam with 5 effects (Cool, Ice, Freezing, Frozen & Chill Out) that was smoosh able & froze Simon’s nipple & idk if it counts but I love it, the “Man’s Psy Energy Factory Care Aqua for Man Ever Perfume Deodorant Spray Show Me Your Armpit” Psy Deodorant that smelled like the high school prepubescent sex hallway & where you made Leigh smell your armpits **LOLZ!!!!**

    • That mix was, I think, little toy gems. I think the game was to try to scoop as many as you can in one scoop :)

  7. Shortcutting through buildings: When I worked at a shoe store a couple of years ago, the store was positioned on a corner and had two working entrances. Whenever it was too hot or too cold (or they were just too lazy) people would just cut through the store. Problem was…each time a person came in the store we had a tracker that would count how many people came in and left vs how many sales we made. if we didn’t hit a certain percentage daily, the entire store suffered from corporate. People didn’t care when we tried to explain that their shortcut was affecting our jobs but sure enough we’d get put on “Intensive Care” or chewed out by corporate who only looked at the numbers…sigh….

TLDR – think before cutting through.

(Though to be fair it seems like that may not be a thing in Japan…)

  8. Hey Simon and Martina! How can you guys be out of EYS towels already?! Are you getting more stock? I went to buy one today, it has only been 2 days! I am super sad pandas :'(

    • I have no idea how they sold out so fast! I thought it would take a while, but they were gone in half a day. Ahh. So, we’re gonna see if we can get more printed. Sorry :(

  9. Ok, not really relevant for beating the heat, but I’ll write it anyway! I love all your WTFs, but one that I keep rewatching (and sharing with all of mye friends) is the Korean 4D black face mask. Oh man, when Simon pops up in front of the camera, I can’t stop laughing. And then when Martina slaps Simon with the mask in the end while shouting “IT WAS A TRICK”! Seriously, so epic and so inappropriate.

  10. The Cheap Korean Water Guns was probably my favourite WTF for beating the heat. Martina had the ineffectual ‘gun-blade’ and Simon’s was a super effective cannon. Water fights are super fun and clearly the superior way to beat the heat.

Also hooray for Rupaul’s drag race! Which season are you watching?

  11. One of the really old WTFs was the ducky personal fans. Perfect for staying cool in the heat :) (and I realized I messed up Spudgy’s age because he was younger than our dog that passed away, not our current dog…bad brain. Spudgy’s age is in between my babies)

  12. Once you guys used Korean Freeze Foam from Etude House (WHICH IS ALSO ONE OF MY FAVORITE BRANDS) and had a “name words that relate to cold” battle that Marina won! It was really cold and kind of like dry ice and similarly SHOULD NOT PUT ON YOUR NIPPLE. Simon learned the hard way…

  13. Dear Simon and Martina, since you now no longer live in Korea, will you ever tell us what’s behind the mysterious room in your EYK office in HongDae? Time travel, we know, but what else?

  14. One WTF that was super great to beat the heat was the Portable Foot Bath! However Martina got her poor toesies squished, and forgot how to English. “It gives me so cold!” XD Love you guys!

  15. These pictures are super nice! Would love to see more of them :).
    v ****aesthetic ****

  16. There were so many to choose, from foods to body products and I chose WTF – Korean Freeze Foam – Ice shot for my body…Ice, cool, freeze…winter…frozen…cold…icicle…popcicle…chill out…alaska…tundra…freezing…frozen…winter…*Martina: wrong, I won that one wooh. :)

  17. I am going with the ‘Super Happy Cutie Ducky Chicky Fan’ because hey it’s cute :) Also, I love that you guys are putting up your pictures! It’s really neat to see even just the every day life pictures of far away places. Speaking as someone who doesn’t travel much and is unlikely to, I love being able to see images that I otherwise would never get to see. You can always see the perfect travel brochure type pictures that they have when I type in for images for a place, but I love with your pictures that we get to see the side streets and banners and festivals and picnic places and just every day people hanging out and doing their thing. I guess the short answer is – I’m enjoying your pictures thanks for sharing them :)

    • That’s awesome! We’ll keep sharing them, then, when we have them. We don’t always take pictures, but we’re trying to make an effort to take more. Our cameras aren’t just video cameras, so hopefully we can get more use out of their photo function :D

  18. Looking at Fatfat Takohead in the background, will we ever see Dan wearing it since both Simon and Martina have worn it?

  19. I remember the pink jelly water bath shoes, they were very practical and easy to walk in ^^. And then when Simon dropped them on Martina’s feet and scratched up her toes, they came in handy to rinse off the cuts!

  20. That one old video of a WTF is Man Arm Covers to keep cool in the Korean heat or the Korean Solar Visors.

  21. My favourite Korean ‘beat the heat’ WTF has got to be the hard plastic ‘portable foot bath’ bucket shoes that Martina demo’ed while out and about in Hongdae. The way Simon tried to ‘sell’ them like a he was the host of 3am infomercial was gold. His face in that vid is the embodiment of the :D emoji. LOL

  22. One WTF you did to beat the Korean heat is Freeze foam. I believe you got it from etude house and I specially remember Simon spraying some on his nipple and it got stuck in his chest hair!
